Introduction The Diocesan Youth Service of the Diocese of East Anglia is excited to be organising a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, walking apporoximately 100km of the ‘Camino’, also known as ‘The Way of St. James’. Legend holds that St. James's remains were carried by boat from Jerusalem to northern Spain, where he was buried in what is now the city of Santiago de Compostela. The Way of St. James was one of the most important Christian pilgrimages during the Middle Ages. However, the Black Death, the Reformation, and political unrest in 16th century Europe led to its decline. Since the 1980s, walking the Camino has become popular again with over 270,000 pilgrims walking it in 2016, and more than this expected in 2017. Will you be one of them? Itinerary Sunday 23 rd July 0830 Mass with Bishop Alan (location to be decided) Minibus / coach to Stansted Airport 1210 Flight from Stansted to Santiago de Compostela Bus from Santiago de Compostela to Sarria. Monday 24 th July Walk Sarria to Pontomarin 14.5 miles/23.2kms. This one of the quietest and most peaceful walks of the Camino. There are plenty of places for lunch and drinks along the way. Tuesday 25th July Walk Portomarin - Palas de Rei 15.5 miles/24.8kms. There are several miles of road walking along this stretch but the roads are quiet and you pass through some small villages.
