Young Entrepreneurs Trip to Israel2014

#YoungTreps2014

Dear Programme Participants,

Congratulations on being selected to participate in our first-ever Young Entrepreneurs Trip to one of the most entrepreneurial countries, Israel. With the highest number of start ups per capita of any nation in the world and massive venture capital investment, Israel has many entrepreneurial lessons to offer.

Your inclusion in this trip is recognition of you and your business’ potential to make a meaningful and sustainable contribution in South Africa. Understanding that potential without opportunity will remain just potential, thus we are happy to have partnered with the South Africa-IsraelForum to facilitate what we hope will be an amazing tripand opportunity for you and your business.

Israel’s start up success recipes and stories have been well-documented, but reading and experiencing are often very different. This trip is about you experiencing Israel’s entrepreneurial spirit and flair. It is hoped that a lot of entrepreneurial growth will be realised by exposing you to different businesses, platforms and networking opportunities in Israel. You are encouraged to take full advantage of the programme and associated opportunities, for you will only gain what you put into this trip.

Whilst packed with entrepreneurial exposure, thisprogramme also affords you the opportunity to have a bitof a tourist experience of Israel. Enjoy it!

Yours sincerely,

Setlogane Manchidi

Dear Trip Participants,

The South Africa-Israel Forum (SAIF) is proud to partner with Investec on this first-ever Young Entrepreneurs pilot trip to Israel. We all recognise that South Africa’s future is dependent on fostering a stronger culture of entrepreneurship, as our country currently has one of the highest rates of youth unemployment and wealth disparities in the world.

Israel is an example of a relatively young country that, despite its history of conflict, has managed to successfully transform itself in the past 66 years from a fledgling state-controlled economy with high inflation into one of the world’s leaders in technology, agriculture and alternative energy. Not only does Israel have the second highest concentration of technology companies in the world after the United States, but it boasts 4.9% unemployment and was recently ranked the 17th most economically developed nation in world.

Israel was recently ranked #3 by the Global Competitive Index 2014-15, behind Finland (#1) and Switzerland (#2), and followed by Japan (#4) and the United States (#5).

We hope that you embark on this trip with an open mind and actively seek out new business ideas, ways of working and partnerships. In addition to learning about Israel, we hope that you will see this trip as an opportunity to promote South Africa and to encourage Israeli and Palestinian entrepreneurs to do business with developing countries, and more specifically, with the African continent.

Sincerely,

Dan Brotman

Rethink Educationwww.rethinkeducation.co.za Education Technology | 6 employees

Doug founded Rethink Education with the aim of focusing directly on the high school market, in an effort to make current technology more useful in the schooling system. Rethink’s online platforms have been created to aid learning in South African high schools and can be used to complement the teaching of core maths and science concepts, both inside and outside of the classroom. These various platforms give learners access to high school mathematics and science content in a chat-styled interface via both mobile phones and the web.

Justin Drennan, 36 [email protected]@JustinDrennan

Wantitall Pty. Ltd.www.wantitall.co.zaOnline retail | 70 employees

Justin founded Wantitall in 2007 when he and his business partners identified a gap in the market to import products from the USA that were not previously available in South Africa. The business was more of a requirement of IT guys trying to get hold of products, rather than a fully fledged company with a business plan.

Wanitall’s previous focus was on importing niche products from the USA through its associate agreement with Amazon.com. More recently, it won the tender and has successfully deployed online orders for makro.co.za. Its key focus is on its logistics platform that allows any e-commerce retailer to have access to advanced logistics systems.

Kim Whitaker, 30 Cape [email protected]@OnceinCapeTown

Once in Cape Townwww.stayatonce.com Hospitality | 20 employees

Kim started the first of her now ten backpackers at the age of 23, after having identified a demand in the South African youth travel market for affordable, high quality accommodation in central locations for intrepid travellers. Her business model includes buying or leasing old hotel properties and converting them into trendy youth travel hubs.

Her vision is to have a Once property presence in key African business and tourist hubs and to continue to offer great accommodation to young (at heart) travellers.

Marc Sevitz, 30 Cape [email protected] @TaxTim

TaxTim www.taxtim.comIT/Financial Services | 2 employees

Marc founded TaxTim with his business partner because he had a problem and needed to solve it: Despite being well educated in science and IT, his business partner had no idea how to complete a tax return and found the SARS (SA Revenue Service) interface and guidance to be no help. So he asked Marc, who is a Chartered Accountant specialising in tax, to assist him. The two came up with the idea of turning Marc’s tax brain and knowledge into a unique online conversation, whereby taxpayers can complete their returns themselves, as if they have their own tax practitioner sitting with them. When Marc and his business partner noticed that Google was starting an incubator in Cape Town, they entered their idea and were selected as one of the first three teams out of over 600 applicants to join. The rest is history.

Miles Kubheka, 39 [email protected]

Vuyo’s Restaurantwww.vuyos.co.zaRestaurant | 15 employees

One day Miles saw an ad on TV showing a young and ambitious, big, big, dreamer –Vuyo – taking his wors (sausage) business global. This got him thinking: He liked the ad, and the more he watched it, the more he realised that while it was advertising Hansa beer, the unintended consequence was that it was building a Vuyo brand. Research established that the Vuyo character was fictional, so he trademarked the name. In December 2012 he opened the restaurant – Vuyo’s – in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Miles has since become the real Vuyo and hopes his fortunes will soar like those of the TV character. He plans to take this concept global, which has the same branding and colours as the TV ad.

Vuyo’s boldest dream is to be “South Africa’s most-loved fast casual restaurant that will take South African cuisine global.” Last year his chain signed an agreement with the SPAR group (one of South Africa’s biggest food retailers), whereby it co-funds the cost of the mobile Vuyo’s wors carts, which are then set up outside Spar outlets. Miles strives for Vuyo’s to employ 500 entrepreneurs over the next five years.

Nontwenthle (Nonts) Mchunu, [email protected] Cape Town@nonts

Ezulwini Chocolatwww.ezulwinichocolat.co.zaFood Manufacturing | 9 employees

Nontwenhle is passionate about food, art and Africa. As a child, she was always interested in cooking and baking, when she wasn’t helping her mother in the family shop. When she discovered that the largest amount of cocoa was grown in Africa, and yet the continent is not home to high quality chocolate producing companies, she wanted to change that picture. She thus travelled to Europe and learned how to make chocolate from the best in order to produce a world-class South African chocolate brand. She started as a door-to-door, home-based business, and currently supplies chocolate to Pick ‘n Pay.

Nontwenthle’s vision is to grow her business into an internationally recognised, 100% African premium chocolate brand, to create sustainable employment and to establish a foundation to educate the children of cocoa farmers.

TheHookupDinnerwww.thehookupdinner.comEvents | 5 employees

Phakiso started his business by hosting private matric dance after parties in luxury homes. He started a bean bag selling business to supply this market. After three years in operation, he joined the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship to upskill himself and meet other like-minded entrepreneurs. It was through this that he saw the frustration of entrepreneurs working alone. As a result, he started TheHookupDinner, a platform that allows entrepreneurs to engage, connect and contribute to each other’s successes, while allowing the entrepreneurial voice to be heard through a Pitch Platform.
