D’var Torah: Heshey Spitzer Sometimes mothers are taken for granted, but this is nothing new - it is even in the Torah in our Parsha of Chukas. This week’s Parsha records the death of Miriam and tells us that after she passed away the miraculous travelling wells that accompanied them from Egypt disappeared and there was no water for the nation to drink. ותמת שם מרים... ולא היה מים לעדה. Comments the Kli Yakar that the lack of water was because Bnai Yisrael did not mourn properly for Miriam. When Aharon dies it says that everyone cried for thirty days ויבכו את אהרן שלשים יום. When Moshe dies it again says that everyone cried for thirty days ויבכו בני ישראל את משה... שלשים יום. When Miriam dies nothing “she dies and is buried” ותמת שם מרים ותקבר שם. Hashem defends the honor of Miriam and takes away the wells. This was the reminder of the greatness and holiness of Miriam in whose merit all of Israel was able to survive in the arid desert. Protecting Israel, Protecting Our People YIDB members & their IDF grandchildren This week’s IDF spotlight focuses on Bezalel and Yoav Koplon, grandsons of Marilyn and David Koplon. Bezalel and Yoav are the first in our YID profiles to actually have been born and raised in Israel. Their parents, Benji and Susan Koplon made aliyah in 1989. These Sabra boys both began their IDF service in 2013. Bezalel has achieved the rank of First Lieutenant in the Communications Unit. His specialty is data security. He entered the army’s Academic Program, whereby he was sent to Ariel University. He received his B.A. in Physics and is simultaneously completing another B.A. and M.A. in Electrical Engineering. He has almost completed his six years of duty. Yoav entered the army after graduating Machon Lev where he simultaneously received his high school and college degree. Machon Lev is a yeshiva in Israel which offers religious studies as well as emphasis on engineering and technology. He is a Senior Academic Officer in the Intelligence Division. He has completed 3 years of his 5 year commitment. Both Bezalel and Yoav have top security jobs in the IDF. We were not able to reprint their pictures here in our newsletter. For security reasons, the IDF forbids posting photos on the internet of soldiers who hold highly classified positions. Bezalel is currently single and Yoav has been married to his wife Tammy for a year and a half. Marilyn and David are proud of their chayalim (soldiers). They are impressed with their accomplishments and their service to Israel. Marilyn and David feel a sense of honor knowing Bezalel’s and Yoav’s active duty in the IDF has provided protection for all עם ישראל, Am Israel. Sometimes mothers are taken for granted, but this

is nothing new - it is even in the Torah in our

Parsha of Chukas. This week’s Parsha records

the death of Miriam and tells us that after she

passed away the miraculous travelling wells that accompanied

them from Egypt disappeared and there was no water for the

nation to drink. ולא היה מים לעדה... ותמת שם מרים. Comments the

Kli Yakar that the lack of water was because Bnai Yisrael did not

mourn properly for Miriam. When Aharon dies it says that

everyone cried for thirty days ויבכו את אהרן שלשים יום . When

Moshe dies it again says that everyone cried for thirty days ויבכו

Protecting Israel, Protecting Our People

YIDB members & their IDF grandchildren

This week’s IDF spotlight focuses on

Bezalel and Yoav Koplon, grandsons of

Marilyn and David Koplon. Bezalel and

Yoav are the first in our YID profiles to

actually have been born and raised in Israel.

Their parents, Benji and Susan Koplon made

aliyah in 1989. These Sabra boys both began

their IDF service in 2013.

Bezalel has achieved the rank of First

Lieutenant in the Communications Unit. His

specialty is data security. He entered the army’s Academic

Program, whereby he was sent to Ariel University. He received

his B.A. in Physics and is simultaneously completing another

B.A. and M.A. in Electrical Engineering. He has almost

completed his six years of duty.

Yoav entered the army after graduating Machon Lev where he

simultaneously received his high school and college degree.
