ACCOUNTANCYA major of the BBus

A GOOD FIT IF YOU > Are able to consider the bigger picture in problem solving situations > Enjoy business and mathematics subjects at school > Can communicate complex ideas in simple ways

BE READY FOR ANY BUSINESS CHALLENGEThis degree will help you become an accountancy specialist with the broad business knowledge and skills that employers seek.

WHAT’S IT LIKE?The Bachelor of Business (Accountancy) will allow you to become an accountant with an integrated business perspective and gain the skills and confidence to measure the big decisions affecting modern organisations and societies. These are skills that today’s employers seek, both in New Zealand and internationally.

BECOME AN EXCELLENT COMMUNICATORYou will develop your ability to identify and communicate information important to organisations. The programme will help you make financial and non-financial judgements from available resources and will develop your interpersonal, computer and business communication skills.

A PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTANCY CAREER?If you are certain you would like to follow a professional accounting career, you should consider the Bachelor of Accountancy programme as an alternative to the BBus (Accountancy). See page 20.

CAREERSThe accountancy major prepares you primarily for careers in business. However, you may also find opportunities in education, the corporate or public sector, or as a consultant providing business or tax advisory services. An accountancy major can also lead to a career within general management. Because the major is flexible and gives you the opportunity to concentrate on a particular area of accountancy, career options are numerous depending on the combination of papers you choose to take. Many of our

graduates start their careers in an accounting function but later move into other areas, taking with them financial and non-financial performance evaluation skills important for senior executives. BBus graduates with an accountancy major can seek admission to the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants or CPA Australia by completing a number of papers not specifically required in the BBus degree. The right paper selection also provides graduates with maximum exemptions for ACCA, and seven exemptions for CIMA. If you would like more information on professional body membership, please contact the School of Accountancy Administrator. You should seek advice early in your degree programme, because a number of the required papers should be included in your BBus degree as electives.

n OLIVIA CLARK Bachelor of Business Studies (Accountancy) Graduated in 2012. Auditor - KPMG ‘Fresh from completing her accountancy degree at Massey, Olivia Clark embarked on an OE with a difference...’ After her final exams she hopped on a plane bound for Vietnam to take up an internship with KPMG’s office in Ho Chi Minh City. You’ll get a strong grounding in economics, but in a programme that is less rigorous and specialised than the Bachelor of Applied Economics.

CAREERSThe skills and knowledge of trained economists are highly sought after by the public and private sector, large and small firms, large international agencies, schools and universities, economic policy makers, and social organisations. The following list are examples of some of the options open to you:

Treasury, the Reserve Bank and the World Bank all recruit economics graduates. However, on graduating in economics you are not restricted to a career as an ‘economist’. Your economics degree can be the gateway to employment in many other areas, like management, planning, politics, education, finance and banking, and journalism and the media. You can design your economics major to meet your interests and career objectives.

n KATIE HAMMOND Bachelor of Business Studies (Management) (Enterprise Development) Graduated in 2006 Founder and Owner - KTea ‘I don’t think I’d be where I am today without that degree...’ I always wanted my company to be Fairtrade and I had been studying social entrepreneurship at university, and I really wanted to do something that was good and sustainable. I’ve got a really good grounding in business and that theoretical learning you get from university. I don’t think I’d be where I am today without that degree. While studying business at Massey, Katie did an assignment examining the New Zealand market for fair trade loose-leaf tea. It became quickly clear that there was a glaring gap, which she filled with a product she calls KTea. In 2013 she won the New Zealand Fairtrade Product Awards Small Company award. Starting off small, Miss Hammond began selling at the City Market and Underground Craft Market in Wellington in 2010, and was ordering tea in three-kilogram boxes from a third-party supplier in Australia. Now she imports 100-kilogram boxes of fair trade black and green teas direct from the first certified organic tea garden in the world in Sri Lanka, with South Island herbs mixed in to make her unique flavour combinations. Stockists include five Wellington cafés, two supermarkets and specialist fine-foods retailers Moore Wilson’s, Commonsense Organics and Urban Harvest.

> CHERYLITA DOWNIE Bachelor of Business Studies (Finance) Contours women’s gym, club owner ‘Thanks to what I learned at Massey I know I can do anything’ I knew that one day I wanted to own my own business, so for me, a BBS was a no-brainer. After graduating I joined Ernst & Young as an IT auditor, before moving on to a role as Business Analyst for Pernod Ricard. In January 2010 I took possession of a slightly run down, ladies-only gym in a fantastic area. While I had a steep learning curve, I have increased its profitability by at least $100,000 year-on-year, and added 150 paying members. I have turned it into a completely paperless operation, by improving business processes and implementing several Internet-based technologies. This has made the business more efficient and means I can work from anywhere in the world. At the end of 2012 I hired a manager to take on the operational side of the gym while I travelled around Europe for three months with my husband and I’m now in Bali studying yoga, all while managing and directing two companies. I loved that the business school offered options for someone entrepreneurial like myself. I am only just starting and am held back by nothing.

GAIN THE SKILLS EMPLOYERS SEEKThe BBus (Human Resource Management) will give you the theoretical and practical skills you need to have a successful career in human resource management.

WHAT’S IT LIKE?When you study the Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management) you’ll look at how employees are recruited and selected and how work is designed and measured so that an organisation can create value from its employees.Human resource management is the process of managing the relationship between people and the organisations they work in. It is a specialist function supporting organisations, and their employees, at both strategic and operational levels. An understanding of HRM is also of benefit to anyone with responsibilities for managing people.

WHAT DOES AN HR PROFESSIONAL DO?Human resource management is about managing people effectively within businesses, corporations and other organisations. You will work to place people in positions where their skills and abilities can be most effectively used to help the organisation meet its business goals. At the same time you will help create work environments which are healthy and rewarding for employees. Not only so they contribute to the organisation, but so they can satisfy their own personal and career needs. This is vital for any organisation wanting to retain a sustained competitive edge.

THE SKILLS EMPLOYERS SEEKThe study of human resource management at Massey gives you a good grounding in the theory of HRM, but also a practical insight into the reality of the business world. Your courses have a significant practical component, with assignments, case studies and other projects involving working with or examining local as well as overseas businesses. We’ll also assist you to develop networks which will help you in gaining a position when you graduate.

CAREERSA major in human resource management enables you to pursue a wide variety of career opportunities. New graduates might take up a generalist human resources position in a private company, or in the public sector. Past graduates have become consultants, policy analysts for government and entered management trainee programmes. There is increasing emphasis on human resource management by top management in New Zealand organisations. More organisations now have a human resource manager as a key member of the senior management team. In a strategic sense, the people in the organisation are what gives that organisation a competitive edge. Consequently there is growing demand for those who have the skills to understand and manage the human side of organisations.

I love the fact that when I wake up in the morning I’m excited to go to work! I initially started studying toward a law degree, but decided that really wasn’t ‘me’. Then I found out Massey had the joint business/psychology option, which was a perfect fit – I transferred across to Massey and never looked back. Massey is an amazing university. n EYAL APATOV Bachelor of Applied Economics with Honours Policy Analyst, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment ‘Massey’s point of difference is the quality of the services: unlimited broadband, lots of parking, great online services, and great student support’. I studied a Bachelor of Applied Economics (bachelor degree and an additional honours year), completing in 2012. I took this degree because I was interested in the effects the economy has over our everyday life, culture, and the environment we live in. I took many statistical/quantitative papers which gave me the analytical skills, as well as understanding the overall context of the data (using economic theory). Massey’s point of difference is the quality of the services: unlimited broadband, lots of parking, great online services, and great student support. I was very impressed by the availability of lecturers assisting me with my academic and professional requirements. I really liked the small classes as they made the lectures more interesting. My ambition is to use economics to assist the greater society. My studies gave me basic tools which I can use, and improve (as I get more experienced) for analysing and evaluating public policies, and different economic situations, as well as offering solutions.

nMIKE CHU Postgraduate Diploma Sport NZ Rugby National Coach Development Manager The new Bachelor of Sports Management is a timely addition to the range of qualifications being offered by Massey University, particularly with the strong growth in career opportunities in the sport management sector. I have always been a keen sportsperson, and the subjects I studied at Massey University combined my love of sports with a degree qualification. I studied at the Palmerston North campus, which was a fantastic overall experience, with the city providing everything you need in terms of nightlife, sporting opportunities and a laid back friendly vibe. The program was challenging and fun with a lot of practical experience. A highlight was my sport management placement, where I managed the NZ Universities Hockey Council, including managing a tour to Australia for the NZU Men’s and Women’s teams. I’ve worked in rugby in both NZ and Canada for many years, and currently, as the National Coach Development Manager for NZ Rugby, I lead the development and operationalisation of the national coaching strategies. My current role has a primary focus on the development of community level coaches, and I gain huge satisfaction helping recruit, develop and retain the many volunteer coaches who, in turn, inspire young players. The sports industry is an extremely rewarding and stimulating career choice requiring travel and hard work. I’ve had the privilege of working with international players and coaches, experiencing the highs and lows of international competitions. My advice to other students looking to succeed in the sports industry is to embrace all the opportunities that come your way and be prepared to step outside of your comfort zone. Take advantage of the work placements as these provide amazing opportunities for real life work experiences and invaluable industry connections.

A GOOD FIT IF YOU > Like to be busy, enjoy multi-tasking

and get bored easily > Enjoy doing lots of different interesting things

every day to keep your busy brain stimulated > Are interested in how people communicate

BECOME A COMMUNICATION SPECIALISTYou’ll gain an understanding of the complexities, challenges, and rewards of interpersonal and organisational communication – you’ll be a communication specialist.

WHAT IS IT LIKE?Studying communication management at Massey gives you in-depth insights into many different forms of communication and how they are used at work and in the community. Factors like culture, gender, and technology all have a deep influence on how we connect. You can choose from courses that will re-shape how you understand yourself and your world, including Cross-Cultural Communication, Organisational Communication and Gender and Communication in Organisations.

BECOME A SOUGHT-AFTER EMPLOYEEYou’ll emerge with skills that potential employers find very desirable. Communication management shows you how to communicate using ‘global English’, making presentations to colleagues and clients using verbal and non-verbal approaches, and performing a communication audit.

LEARN WITH LEADERS IN THE INDUSTRYMassey was the first to offer a university-level communication management programme in New Zealand, back in 1979. Our teachers are highly regarded internationally, blending expert international scholarship with real-world experience, giving you insights into the world of

communication and consulting. You will obtain a comprehensive overview of communication management issues and processes. At graduation you will be knowledgeable in management communication policies and practices, have a theoretical grasp of communication processes, and an awareness of how to apply communications and media technologies.

CAREERSYou may become a media relations or government relations specialist, or you could get a role as a communication adviser, helping an organisation deliver great communication in everything they do.Massey’s Bachelor of Communication (Communication Management) will ground you in strategic planning, media relations, employee relations, government relations, issues management, and other public relations and communication management methods. Your future roles could involve specialising in any of these areas.

n GEORGIA HAMILTON Bachelor of Communication (Communication Management). Graduated in 2012 Public Relations and Events Executive - Elevate PR Marketing & Events ‘Although I started my degree on a trial basis, I ended up loving it and even surprised myself by winning a few awards along the way...’ In the early days of my study I was given a simple, yet powerful piece of advice: Just say yes. As terrifying as this was, it pushed me out of my comfort zone and into a number of amazing experiences - like being a news reporter at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Despite my wary beginnings, I quickly learnt that communications was the path for me. I won a number of top student awards, was named on the 2012 Massey Business School Dean’s List and selected to participate in the Massey Business School internship program, which led to full-time employment as the Communications Adviser at Sport Manawatu. The BC’s business and humanities mix was the main attraction for me and particularly unique. There aren’t many universities that offer such a variety of study areas and flexibility under one degree. I enjoyed being able to study linguistics alongside PR /communications and not being restricted to just one industry. It helped me keep perspective on the scope and volume of learning available and an open mind in terms of where I wanted to take my career. I think the mix also allows future employers to see you’ve had a range of learning experiences and explored different interests. From my role at Sport Manawatu, I have since moved to Brisbane where I first worked as a PR and event executive for Elevate PR Marketing & Events before moving to a role managing functions at The Queensland Club. I have found my niche and created my own role specialising in corporate conference/event management and internal communications.

A GOOD FIT IF YOU > Love theatre, drama, film-making, creating images and videos online,

public speaking/debating > Are in lots of student clubs and societies at school > Enjoy putting on creative events > Are interested in a professional communication career with an

organisation in the public or private sectors

LOVE THEATRE? WANT TO EXTEND YOUR CAREER OPTIONS?If you love theatre and performance, but want to ensure you have broader career prospects, possibly in the corporate world, the Bachelor of Communication (Expressive Arts) is for you.

WHAT IS IT LIKE?As part of your study, you will be able to take part in and lead theatre and digital video productions. You will learn the hands-on skills of acting, directing, managing productions, scripting, storyboarding, creative writing and video filming and editing. You will also learn how these fit into the everyday activities of a professional communication practitioner and the leadership skills necessary to effectively manage people. For example, you might produce a music video, or direct an experimental multi-media show. You might be immersed in the techniques of improvisational theatre, including games and spontaneity activities, as a way to unlock and manage your creativity across other media including creative writing. You might find yourself devising word-at-a-time stories with team members, or learning how your posture communicates a status instantly to others.

CAREERSSurveys have shown that today’s employers seek graduates who can give compelling presentations, problem-solve creatively, think originally, analyse perceptively, communicate effectively (both in person and on paper) and work well in teams. Learn these skills through expressive arts. When combined with the communication and corporate skills that you learn through your Bachelor of Communication you will have a qualification that can be applied across an amazing range of roles.Graduates with an expressive arts major are working today in arts publicity, human resources, advertising, marketing and public relations, television and journalism, teaching, theatre and entertainment and creative and professional writing.

nWHITNEY NUKU Bachelor of Communication (Media and Expressive Arts) Māori Communications Adviser - NZQA ‘My creative writing skills help me to take a boring policy paper and turn it into an interesting read for whānau...’ No two days are the same in my role as the Māori Communications Adviser for the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. One day might involve coordinating, designing, editing and proofing publications on Mātauranga Māori for an academic audience, while the next might be spent planning promotion and activities for Māori language week. I’m required to be both professional and creative in my work, so although a lot of what I do is varied from what I studied, the blend of business and humanities from the Bachelor of Communication has been complimentary to my role. In addition, my exposure to different forms of art and expression gained during my degree has made a huge impact on the way I work. For example, my creative writing skills help me to take a boring policy paper and turn it into an interesting read for whānau. My experience in media practice is beneficial when producing videos, like ones that helps parents and grandparents understand NCEA. My knowledge of the creative process not only guides my own ideas, it also helps when working with others to bring out the best of everyone’s ideas. I’m lucky enough to have a boss who trusts my artistic and creative judgement and gives me the freedom to colour outside the lines of my organisation’s usual approach.

A GOOD FIT IF YOU > Are interested in current affairs > Are up for the challenge of speaking in front

A FASCINATING AREA OF STUDYThe news and news media are constantly changing in both content and delivery, so journalism studies will always remain a fascinating area of study.

WHAT IS IT LIKE?The news media play a vital role in society. Technological advances have made them totally pervasive, entering our daily lives 24/7. But as the media changes, new questions arise around how the media should operate, including challenging ethical issues around things like media intrusion on privacy, the UK media phone-tapping scandal, and the controversy about WikiLeaks. In your journalism studies major, you’ll learn about the media’s role, you will build essential journalistic skills and expertise in specialised fields such as feature writing and investigative reporting.

WORLD-LEADING JOURNALISM STUDYThe quality of Massey’s journalism is internationally recognised. You learn from lecturers who have vast experience (often as leading journalists themselves). Our journalism school is New Zealand’s most long-standing, and has many graduates who are household names and celebrities.

BECOME A JOURNALISM EXPERT If you choose journalism studies as your major, you learn news media theory, study the role of the media, practise the essential journalistic skills (including newsroom decision-making), and gain in-depth understanding of specialised journalistic fields, such as feature writing. You’ll be a journalism expert.

CAREERSThis qualification is a great degree if you wish to become a journalist (note that you must undertake further study to become a qualified journalist). Many students seeking further in-depth development as a journalist also opt for a fourth year in the Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism. The Master of Journalism offers a further attractive capstone to your studies.

n BRIDGET HAYMAN Bachelor of Communication (Journalism Studies major, Media Studies minor). Graduated in 2013 Media and Communications Adviser - New Zealand Defence Forces ‘I have really enjoyed putting the skills and knowledge I learnt during my Bachelor of Communication at Massey to use in real life....’ As the Junior Media and Communications Adviser at the New Zealand Defence Force I take media enquiries on our media phone, write and send media releases and advisories about our people and activities. I post on the Air Force and NZDF Facebook pages which have more than 20,000 followers. I use social media measuring tools to track our social media statistics and Media Portal to monitor our media coverage. I compile a Daily Media brief of everything that has gone on in the media that day, which is distributed to the key stakeholders of the NZDF (ie the senior leaders) and have written a story for the Navy Magazine read by the wider Defence Force. I have had the opportunity to travel from Napier to Wellington on a Navy Ship, media wrangled at the arrival and departure of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and have sat in on a live CNN interview about the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s role in the search for MH370. The opportunity for this job presented itself during my communication internship at Massey which was an invaluable experience.

LINGUISTICSAn arts major or minor of the BC

A GOOD FIT IF YOU > Have a curious mind > Love to know how things work > Are interested in the ways language can help or hinder successful

communication in both social and professional spheres

WHAT IS IT LIKE?In the Bachelor of Communication (Linguistics) you will explore how the brain manages language and the unwritten rules of interaction. You’ll also uncover the underlying structures that shape our understanding of language and communication in settings as different as boardrooms, newsrooms, chat windows and living rooms. For example, you might examine murderers’ text messages, provide a commentary for a sports match, construct an alien language, listen to global hip hop to track the influence of African-Americanisms, and observe people talking to dogs. The BC (Linguistics) gives you enhanced language skills for both the social and professional worlds. You will gain an understanding of the functions of language and the cultural implications of how we communicate through the media, socio-political and legal contexts.

SKILLS SOUGHT-AFTER BY EMPLOYERSYou will learn transferable skills that employers seek - your own personal excellent written and oral communication skills and an ability to understand the subtexts of communication from others and diagnose unintended effects or communication ‘bottlenecks’.

AT THE HEART OF OUR LIVESLanguage is at the heart of communication. Linguistics, the study of human languages, helps you understand how language has evolved, how it is structured and how it is used today to communicate in our working and personal lives.

CAREERSMassey University’s linguistics major prepares graduates to work in a growing number of fields where an understanding of the systems, structures, functions and contemporary uses of language strengthens knowledge of communication.

CAREER FLEXIBILITYThis degree gives you a skill-set that is attractive to employers, but also provides flexibility for career pathways.

Careers could include work as a technical or specialist writer, in market research and analysis. Large technology companies seek graduates to work on natural language processing, speech analysis and data collection. Your highly sought-after skills will also be useful for roles in communication, writing for the web, and editing, in fact with any organisation that deals with human language.

SKILLS YOU WILL LEARN: > Analytical skills > Logical thinking > Ability to produce clear communication > Ability to diagnose communication effects and processes > Ability to advise on the role of specific language strategies as part of a

broader communication strategy > Ability to understand language structures at the root of all languages,

not just English, thereby enhancing cross-cultural communication and foreign language learning

n REBECCA FORREST Bachelor of Communication (Linguistics) Minor in Communication Management . Graduated in 2013 ‘I have found the skills I learnt from the degree to be hugely valuable across the different fields I have found myself in over the last year...’ Almost immediately after finishing my final paper (three weeks!) I flew out to Korea where I taught English for seven months. I worked with students aged between 6 - 17 years old. I taught comprehension, phonics, carried out testing and provided coaching for speech competitions. I worked alongside the head teacher and interviewed new foreign teachers. It was amazing to see the cultural components of the degree really come to light during my time at the school. A few weeks after my return to New Zealand, I got a job at a not-for-profit where I really got to put my communication skills to use. I wrote a brochure, engaged in website planning, edited policies, formal templates, wrote letters for publication and initiated the development of a quarterly newsletter to improve the organisation profile. I was at the not-for-profit just shy of six months before being approached by a private business. I was invited on board to provide internal management assistance to support business expansion. The role has been designed to rotate me through different areas of small business operations. It’s going to be a lot of learning in a fun environment, for an industry I genuinely care about. I look forward to further building my skills and seeing where this opportunity takes me.

n DAN WALRAVEN Bachelor of Communication (Marketing Communication) Graduated in 2012. My time at Massey University gave me a great platform to build a career in communications. I spent my first four years at an agency alongside some of Australasia’s best practitioners offering strategic communications support to clients in NZ's public and private sectors. I'm now a trusted communications adviser at one of New Zealand's most innovative dairy companies. From media and investor relations to internal communications and advising our leadership team, no one day is the same. To be the best you've got to learn from the best - that started for me during my Bachelor of Communication and I've made sure it has continued ever since. I wouldn’t be where I am without my Bachelor of Communication from Massey University. Majoring in marketing communications gave me a lens to the business world from a communications perspective, something that was truly fascinating to study. I also got to produce Turbos TV for three seasons - an initiative that complemented my business study due to the strong brand we were working with. I also took advantage of an opportunity to sit on the Bachelor of Communication Programme Committee as student rep for a year. I used Massey’s flexibility with study modes in a way that suited me and allowed me to get the practical experience that is vital for getting a job. In addition to spending a year at each of the Palmerston North and Wellington campuses, I also spent time studying at Exeter University in the UK as a Massey Exchange Student with a scholarship from Massey Business School.

n ADELAIDE MCDOUGALL Bachelor of Communication (Media Studies) Studio Manager - Transistor Studios film production company ‘I am currently working as studio manager at a film production company called Transistor Studios and I LOVE it...’ I graduated from Massey in 2013 with a Bachelor of Communication majoring in media studies with a minor in public relations. Soon after I graduated I flew to New York City to fulfil an internship at a fashion PR Company called PR Consulting. Here I worked with brands such as Vera Wang, J Brand, Acne Studios and many others. During my experience there I often found myself referring back to knowledge I gained at Massey, which I applied to writing press releases about designer shows at NY Fashion Week. My main responsibilities include assisting in shoots and filming, booking freelancers to assist us in the postproduction of commercials and trailers, and contributing to creative discussion with clients. I was recently involved in a shoot for IMAX, and have previously worked on a Lupe Fiasco music video, a Ray Ban commercial and many other amazing projects. Then at the end of the internship, I applied and was successful in landing a full-time job as the studio manager! Film is my passion, so I am very excited to get this position. I wouldn’t have gotten to this point without Massey. I learnt fundamental skills relevant to both the PR and media industry in New Zealand and overseas, which has now prepared me to be able to participate effectively in these companies.

A GOOD FIT IF YOU > Enjoy meeting, talking to new people and

finding out about their lives > Are a good writer > Have an innovative streak > Enjoy keeping up with national and

international news

ONE OF THE FASTEST-GROWING AREAS IN BUSINESS TODAYYour study of public relations delivers knowledge and skills that are in increasing demand - public relations is one of the fastest-growing specialist areas in business.

WHAT IS IT LIKE?The Massey Bachelor of Communication (Public Relations) will build the skills you need for a successful career in public relations. You will develop your interpersonal and inter-group communication abilities, strategic thinking and planning capabilities, writing, and research and information processing skills. You’ll learn how to help organisations to communicate in persuasive and ethical ways with their staff, customers, regulators, communities, investors, and society. Public relations practitioners organise events, write and edit media releases plus online and print newsletters and publications, develop strategic public relations plans, and get great results via new media.

LEADING THE WAYMassey University was New Zealand’s first institution to offer university-level courses in Public Relations, so you’ll be able to take advantage of our vast knowledge and experience in teaching this discipline.

CAREERSA recent IBM global survey of chief executives revealed the #1 expectation of professionals at work is creativity. Marketplace change is now so fast and pervasive that enterprises are keen to hire staff who in their individually creative ways can become change masters. Your Massey PR education is closely matched to this expectation. It equips you with a sound grasp of the classic PR disciplines, coupled with great insights into creativity at work.Enterprises across the spectrum of private sector, government, and not-for-profits now grasp the importance of public relations. They, along with public relations consultancies, tell us how much they appreciate the quality of Massey BC graduates.Public relations practitioners love how every working day is different, busy and challenging, drawing on and further building their creativity and showing them how to make a real difference in their organisations and communities.

n CASEY ANGLAND Bachelor of Communication (Public Relations) Graduated in 2012. Senior Account Executive Head - Pead PR, Auckland ‘By far the most memorable and influential experience I had at Massey was my international exchange, travelling to Los Angeles to study at UCLA for six months...’ I am now a Senior Account Executive at Pead PR in Auckland. I work with a number of technology clients (including Samsung, Orcon, Kordia, EMC & RSA), I also work with the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ).

My degree has given me confidence - particularly in writing. This is a critical skill to have in PR and much of my job is made up of writing (media releases, media/feature pitches communication plans, debriefs, reports). My degree also gave me the opportunity to gain practical experience - both here and abroad. In the PR industry I cannot stress enough how important it is to have practical experience. You need to know what your industry is about and how to communicate effectively to a wide variety of people and businesses. This is a skill you can only gain through practice. The Internship Paper in the Communication degree at Massey allowed me to work hands-on alongside PR professionals to develop my own campaign and PR planning skills. On top of this, the international exchange program allowed me to gain that extra bit of experience in a whole new context - which goes a long way to differentiate you from other graduates. My degree in Communication has already allowed me to achieve many of my personal and professional goals. I was able to travel to Los Angeles, work with celebrities and study in a world-class international university. Through the practical paper offerings I was allowed to be involved in hands on PR activity which gave me invaluable experience which ultimately led to me meeting my business idols and landing a job in a respected Auckland PR company. Without the support of the Massey Communication staff and the diverse course offerings, I would not have been able to gain the wide variety of experience and knowledge I did during my three years of study and I would not be where I am today.

nMICHAEL DICKISON Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism Senior Reporter, New Zealand Herald Wellington seemed an ideal city to study journalism in, and it was. You were immersed in the course. The students came from all over and, for the year, learning to be journalists was everything. We talked about it, questioned it, gave it everything. I started at Fairfax’s sub-hub right after Massey, then worked six months as a reporter at the online nzherald.co.nz, six months as the Herald’s Bay of Plenty reporter - spending a bit of that time in Christchurch (covering the earthquake) and at Pike River (the mine disaster) - about six weeks at the Deccan Herald in Bangalore, India (through a Massey-Asia NZ scholarship), and a month in Japan to report on its 2011 tsunami. I’ve been at the Herald’s Auckland office since. Massey’s teaching was practical, the lecturers always available and supportive, and the course work forced you to take the initiative which, really, seems to be the critical thing. There were enough challenges to always be stimulated. I loved the collaborative projects in video, etc - there’s much more working together and helping one another in newsrooms than you’d expect. And the internships at real companies were invaluable. An internship I did for the course led directly to my job at the Herald. The Herald gets student interns from different journalism schools every year, and the Massey ones are usually much better than the rest - better prepared and more committed. The Massey course also taught us extra skills that have come in handy in getting to do more than straight reporting, including photography/Photoshop, video editing, etc. The course is about more than the skills you pick up. What I keep remembering is the feeling we had - and which the lecturers encouraged - that we should enjoy what we did. It’s an attitude, I think, that has let many of us from the course have a sense of independence, to approach journalism as more than just a job to do. And that’s probably what we had hoped for in getting into it in the first place. Having lecturers with a real perspective on what work is like - and how to make the most of it - is irreplaceable.
