The Future is Universal.

Today, at the beginning of the 21st century, flexi-bility knows no more bounds. Conventional rawmaterials such as oil, gas and coal, as well as re -newable resources like biomass, can be used any-where and at any time to arrive at end productssuch as fuel, petrochemical plastics and fertilizers. The choice as to which product is to be made fromwhich base material is simply a matter of taste.

Our times are characterized by the harmoniouscoexistence of various energy sources. Such varietyis the result of unrestricted technological possibili-ties. In the efficient high-capacity plants built byLurgi, more than just premium quality materials areobtained from the universal fuel syngas – therebycreating necessary independence for a securefuture.

2050

The population requiring energy has

grown from 6.7 to 9 bn.

2030

Mineral oil loses its position as the

eading raw material used in the

production of fuels and chemicals.

Alternative Fuels Conquer the Market.Today, mobility and productivity are continually onthe rise. With the development of new technolo-gies for the production of diverse synthetic fuels, the quality and environmental compatibility of suchfuels also improves. In just a few years, synfuels willprevail worldwide and broadly replace conventionalfuels.

Technological innovations in the manufacture ofthese fuels address a multitude of demands. In thehighly complex Lurgi plants, the feedstock derivesfrom natural gas, coal and all other kinds of hydro-carbon feedstock. They allow high-grade and low-emission fuels to be produced worldwide, in eachcase exploiting the most efficient local conditions.

Tradition and Innovation.

1897: Long live mobility! In line with the inventionof the automobile and of the combustion engine, itbecame necessary to meet the growing demandfor fuel. As early as in the 1920s, German scientistsdeveloped efficient processes for the production ofsuitable fuels. In 1925, the Fischer-Tropsch synthe-sis technology allowed the conversion of coal toliquid hydrocarbons and thus paved the way forthe commercial production of gasoline and oil.

Highly qualified Lurgi employees were decisivelyinvolved in this development and established thebasis for hydrocarbon and petrochemical tech-nologies.

From 1953, Lurgi focused its technological businessspecifically on these sectors and quickly succeededin becoming the leading player in this industry.

Entrepreneurial Spirit at the Customer’s ServiceThe competitiveness of a company is directlyrelated to the qualification of its employees. Highprofessional competence at all levels is a basic pre-requisite for achieving this objective. At Lurgi, all employees consider themselves entre-preneurs in their own right, setting high standardsfor themselves and providing their services to‘their’ customer.

With Reliable Concepts to the Top

The core activities of Lurgi, headquartered in Frank-furt am Main, mainly focus on its proprietary tech-nologies in the areas of syngas-to-fuels, syngas-to-petrochemicals, refinery, petrochemicals, polymersand renewable resources. In these sectors, Lurgidevelops customized solutions for strongly growingmarkets.

From project development through to LSTK (lumpsum turnkey) execution, plant complexes are glob-ally engineered, built and commissioned by Lurgiunder single-source responsibility.

Our plants benefit from the latest technologies andoffer both, a high degree of reliability as well asenergy efficiency. Therefore, we are working tocontinuously improve our processes to enhancetheir efficiency, meet the customers’ demands andlive up to our responsibility for protecting the envi-ronment.

Lurgi – Your Clean Conversion PartnerWorld population will grow to around nine billionby 2050 with the consequence that the energydemand will increase dramatically. Even if the percapita consumption remained unchanged, thiswould imply a dramatic rise in the overall energyconsumption and hence a quick depletion of ournatural resources, combined with a multiplicationof today’s emissions. Another fact is the decliningquality of raw materials; heavy crude oils in particu-lar feature ever higher sulfur contents. At the sametime, the market and the environmental authoritiesare imposing increasingly stringent requirementson product quality.

This calls for new and intelligent solution concepts.Lurgi has taken up this ambitious challenge. Ourinnovative technologies can contribute to meetingthese requirements. To this effect, we will focus onthe processing and upgrading of natural gas andoil as well as on our clean conversion technologiesfor fuels and chemicals.

With Lurgi’s processes, natural gas and associatedgases from oilfields, as well as from coal, refineryresidues and biomass, can be economically andefficiently converted into petrochemical productsand synthetic fuels which are needed worldwide. For this purpose, Lurgi integrates its sustainableprocesses into complete, environmentally friendlytechnology chains.

Tailored Synthesis Gas SolutionsSyngas is a gaseous mix containing mainly H2 andCO and its major role is that of a key intermediatein the modern synthesis of a range of petrochemi-cals and fuels. Therefore, Lurgi offers a variety of processes for the generation of synthesis gas from several typesof feedstock. Lurgi has developed the key to ultra-large capacities for methanol, Fischer-Tropsch andother synthesis plants. Lurgi and Air Liquide joined forces in a strongcooperation to develop and maintain the leadingtechnologies for all applications in the field ofhydrogen and syngas.

Coal – Old Feedstock with a New PerspectiveRegional diversity in natural resources and differ-ences in production costs are changing the marketsituation. Dwindling resources of oil and naturalgas combined with new technologies have led to arenaissance of coal. Petrochemical products andsyngas can be produced at appreciably lower costs. Our modern technologies comply with the newestenvironmental standards.

Lurgi MegaMethanol®:Basis for more valuable ProductsLurgi’s MegaMethanol® process, the ’chemical’ liquefaction of natural gas, represents a proven tech-nology for converting syngas to methanol at low costand in large quantities. It permits the construction ofhighly efficient single-train plants. The facility usingthis technology in operation today produces morethan 5,000 tons per day. This is more than twice theoutput of conventional plants and results in a signifi-cant reduction of capital and operating costs.

Page 12: your clean conversion partner - GCG Products/18 - Lurgi/Lurgi... · In July 2007, the acquisition of Lurgi by Air Liquide resulted in a strong partnership. With a working relationship

Lurgi recognized the global market trends early onand developed the Methanol to Propylene (MTP®)process as a competitive alternative to the produc-tion of propylene. It constitutes a simple, cost-effective and highly selective technology, yieldingan excellent value-added product for the utilizationof syngas via MegaMethanol®.

SynGas to FuelsThe generation of synthetic fuels from natural gas, coal and biomass using cutting-edge and efficient Fischer-Tropsch routes is gaining momentum. Theimproved combustion of these fuels in engines andthe fact that they are free from sulfur and aromat-ics, make cars more environment-friendly and moreefficient. Not surprisingly, the automotive industryis interested in adding such fuels to conventionalpetroleum-based fuels. Substitution of 20–30 % ofconventional fuel with synthetic fuels reduces emis-sions by up to 80 %.

Lurgi technology contributes to saving resourcesand decisively reduces the dependence on scarcecrude oil reserves. The hitherto flared-off crude-oilassociated gases can be utilized economically andecologically. Thus, a multitude of new products canbe developed to increase the quality of life.

In this respect, the Lurgi MegaMethanol® process isa technology that pays for itself. With good reason,Lurgi has been able to gain market leadership, witharound 50 % of all methanol produced worldwideoriginating from Lurgi plants.

SynGas to PetrochemicalsDemand for methanol is substantial and the utiliza-tion of methanol generated from natural gas andcoal is set to rise appreciably over the next fewyears. Methanol is one of the main feedstocks forsyntheses in the petrochemical industry. The per-centage of plastics produced from natural gas ispredicted to increase fivefold over the next 20 years.

13

Fuel production represents one of the largest marketsin the world. For Europe, it is estimated that the shareof petroleum-based fuels will drop from currently over90% to below 40% in about 30 years’ time, whilethe share of synthetic fuels made from natural gas isexpected to rise by an almost similar percentage.

RefiningOver the next decade, refineries in many parts ofthe world will have to face the challenge of con-verting heavier and lower-grade crudes to cleantransportation fuels. This will require continuedinvestment into conversion technologies for refiner-ies. The consinderable price difference betweenlight and heavy products will make such invest-ments economically attractive. Heavier crudes andthe shrinking fuel oil market will favor retrofittingrefineries with residue conversion units. Against thebackdrop of high crude oil prices, gasification ofcrude residues and the production of hydrogen and

methanol from the resulting synthesis gas repre-sent a viable option.

Lurgi can contribute refinery concepts to this effectby designing and building state-of-the-art plantsbased on its proprietary processes, e.g. residuegasification with the Multi-Purpose-Gasification(MPG) process, or licensed units of third parties.

Lurgi also provides various own technologies forthe refineries´ hydrogen consumers via steamre-forming or gasification. As an option, Lurgi´s parentcompany Air Liquide can satisfy those needs over-the-fence (OTF) to the refineries.

Lurgi’s Gas-to-Liquids processes based on the Fis-cher-Tropsch (FT) or synfuels technologies and onnew technologies which are in the pipeline for thegasification of biomass (2nd generation biofuels)include conversion and hydrotreating technologiesfor the production of ultra-clean transportation fuels.

Biofuels: Natural Resources as Fuel SuppliersThe demand for biofuels is continuously increasingthroughout the world. There is a growing aware-ness of global warming due to excessive CO2 emis-sions and the resulting adverse effects on our ecol-ogy and, ultimately, on our economy. Theprovisions of the Kyoto Protocol have addressedthis issue and the ratifying countries have commit-ted themselves to its key objectives. In view of the long and consistent history of envi-ronmental awareness, responsibility and havingdeveloped the know-how to generate innovativetechnological solutions in chemical engineering,Lurgi is one of the forerunners and promoters ofbiofuels. Lurgi builds 2nd generation biofuels plants. These plants do not need to enter the food chainto produce fuels. The raw materials will be wood, straw and agricultural residues.

OleochemicalsFor many decades Lurgi has been the world leaderfor processing technologies of oils and fats to

value-added products. Lurgi provides completetechnology chains and innovative concepts toprocess oils to high-grade intermediate oleochemi-cals such as fatty acids, fatty alcohols, methyl estersand pharma-grade glycerin. Such products derivedfrom Lurgi plants are acknowledged as the bench-mark quality by the consumer markets.

PetrochemicalsWithin its petrochemical portfolio, Lurgi offers versa-tile and innovative proprietary technologies andmaintains exclusive arrangements with several licens-ing partners. Lurgi possesses outstanding know how and corecompetencies in technologies for oxidation, hydro-genation and extraction of different aromatics and/orolefins, which are used worldwide for the productionof oxygenates and petrochemical intermediates, i.e. Propylene, Butadiene, Butanediol, Phthalic Anhy-dride, Acrylic Acid, Terephthalic Acid and Benzene. Lurgi has distinctly expanded its competence in thefield of polymers by integrating Zimmer’s technolo-

Joint research brings many synergies that con-tribute to the more efficient, and consequentlymore rapid, development of significant newprocesses. Exemplary is a ‘gas-to-petrochemicals’research project together with the Chemical Engi-neering Faculty of the Technical University ofFreiberg, Germany. The objective of this project isto explore ways in which to increase the capacityand reduce the capital and operating costs of exist-ing Lurgi processes for the gasification/reformingof fossil and renewable feedstocks to synthesis gas.

Sustainable development aims at “giving values toprogress” by combining long-term wealth creation, consideration for individuals, and preservation ofthe environment.

19

Research & Development.

R&D is a cornerstone of our future. It decides ontomorrow’s world. So it is a crucial asset for Lurgi’sR&D now to be part of the Air Liquide R&D net-work. Air Liquide backs R&D with an annualbudget of € 200 million. Small wonder thereforethat every day a new patent is applied for.
