I’m studying for a degreeand was looking forsomewhere cheap to live. Isaw an advert online that read‘Do you fancy living in aschool for £40 a week?’ - That’sthe type of rent that I paid 15years ago!
The idea of living in a schoolreally appealed to me, notjust because of the cost butthe fact you get to livesomewhere different. Plus Iget so much space and there’s agym I can play basketball in.
By doing this I get to live inGateacre and there’s no wayI could afford to do thatotherwise. I pay £35 a weekbecause I’m head guardian andI have a responsibility to keepmy eye on the place.
My flat is the old staffroom – the teacher’s pigeonholes arestill up. When I moved in it seemed a bit too big but once Ibrought some of my things in it became really cosy. I really like thecolourful throw on my couch. A friend of mine made it forme. It’s really bright and cheerful.
The only negative is thenearest toilet in the buildingis 100m walk away. Thewater is only connected thereand that can be a particularlycold walk when you get ashower in the morning.
My toy rabbit is quite specialto me. My dad bought him formy mum when she found outshe was pregnant with me so itmeans a lot to me. The fairylights were my sisters but I’vehad them for a while and theybrighten the place up.
The cricket stumps were left in thePE department and they were goingto be thrown away so I kept them.The large protractor and the measuringstick were left in classrooms. I also haveone of the old blackboards and my coffee table was actually atable from the canteen but I cut the legs down.
On my first day it was a bitlike being in a zombie film.Everything was left as it was, allof the furniture was here, all ofthe displays were on the walland registers and schoolbookswere on the desks. It was a bitpost apocalyptic.
When I told my mum I wasliving in an abandonedschool her first question was“are you squatting?” Beforeuniversity I used to work inforestry and I was away all thetime sleeping in portacabinsand caravans so I’m used toliving somewhere unusual.

Although most widely known as troubled Ronnie Mitchell inEastEnders, it is in theatre that Sam Womack is making waves withher performance as Nellie in South Pacific, coming to Liverpool this
month. With a lot of sun, sand and singing the world of musicalscouldn’t be further from her Eastenders’ baby swap storyline, as she
tells us just how different her life is post-Ronnie Mitchell.
How did you get involved in SouthPacific? I love Rodgers & Hammerstein andSouth Pacific is one of their finest musicals.When I heard about this incredibleproduction in New York that was winningjust about every award going, well, I reallywanted to be a part of it. Tell us about your character Nellie. Nellieis wonderfully naïve and she has this hugelearning curve, with redemption at the end,so it’s a real
rollercoaster part and one of the greatfemale roles. Marrying your voice with anorchestra is wonderful. Even when I havebeen tired, or suffering with a cold, singingis euphoric. You hear the orchestra start andit’s the most incredible feeling; you justforget everything else.Are you excited to be performing inLiverpool? I am especially excited abouttaking the show to Liverpool. All my in-lawsare in Liverpool and I’ve been an adoptedScouser since I did Liverpool 1.Liverpudlians are just so responsive. If theyenjoy something, they are on their feet. What’s it like to swap the explosivestorylines of Eastenders for the theatre?When I was doing EastEnders I was oftenaway at five-thirty in the morning and notgetting back home until eight or nine atnight, by which time my children were inbed. With South Pacific I can commute tomany of the theatres, so I get to share thechildren’s day, which is lovely. Some peopleare bringing their children andgrandchildren on the proviso that they areseeing Ronnie from EastEnders, but thenthey just fall in love with the show andforget that it isn’t Albert Square. Theatre isa wonderful home for children. Theatrepeople are a warm bunch and I’ve always
found it a very healthy and happy place forchildren. My daughter Lily’s firstintroduction to theatre was a 26 pieceorchestra rehearsing at the Barbican. I sawthe same look of rapture on her face that Iremember having on mine the first time Iheard an orchestra playing Gershwin; itmoved her in the same way as it moved me.Do you plan to stay in theatre for a whileyet? I love the show and the company somuch that it is a very hard job to leave. I wascontemplating a couple of television roles, butI was so happy in South Pacific that I decidedto stay on. There seems to be a new wave ofyoung independent filmmakers and I havebeen reading some great scripts recently. Thecharacters are not as stereotypical as maybethey are in larger budget films, and some ofthese scripts are really exciting. I’d love to dosome Shakespeare, all the angst and crying Idid in EastEnders has served me well.Are there any plans for you to reprise therole of Ronnie in Eastenders? I had awonderful time there and I’d never rule outgoing back, but Ronnie was a very damagedcharacter and I think she’s probably best leftalone for a while.

Tim Kay became branchmanager at Abode only fivemonths ago, but within thattime he has taken sales andlettings to a new level bybringing in new structures inorder to provide an even better
service to existing and newclients. Being a former businessowner, he owned a Whitegatesfranchise on the Wirral, andhaving a competitive cyclingbackground training all over theworld for tournaments, has ledto his run of successes at Abode.

“We had a Champagne andCanape night recently and willcontinue to run them forinvestors and landlords; we’re
opening ourselves up tellingpeople come look at our officewe’re proud of it, come look atour staff we’re allknowledgeable. We do a lot withthe community as well likesponsoring football teams, wesupport local businesses.”

better, bringing together more bands and biggerart installations.
Music fans descended onto the Baltic trianglein Liverpool’s city centre to watch a wideselection of up and coming and established actsincluding Sandi Thom, The Hummingbirds andBring the Soul.
Unlike last year, the festival was no longerunder one roof, this time expanding to severalvenues. One thing that didn’t change howeverwas the festivals dedication to championinggrassroots.
