My research career has followed a largely academic route, completing my PhD studies 2010 at the University of Pretoria and
being employed as a postdoctoral researcher within the Marion Island Marine Mammal Programme (MIMMP) (Mammal
Research Institute, University of Pretoria) since then. Undergraduate studies (BSc Ecology, 2000) and subsequent
postgraduate studies (BSc (Hons) and MSc (Zoology)) allowed for the development of research skills including geographic
information systems for data analysis, remote sensing, the use and handling of large data sets, statistical analysis using R
software and the process of publishing articles and presenting at conferences. During this time I successfully completed two
training courses in the use of ArcView and ArcGIS software. My PhD research (supervisor: Prof. MN Bester) examined the
characteristics of ocean habitats which are utilised by southern elephant seals (SES). Analysis of animal tracks and finding
patterns of movement and describing the relationships with the physical environment became the focus of my research. As
part of the MIMMP my research has formed the basis for understanding how SES at Marion Island (MI) interact with their
ocean environment in the southern Indian Ocean. SES from MI tend to forage due west of the island, in close conjunction
with the frontal zones formed by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Whilst these broad patterns hold true, much fine scale
variation is evident in their behaviour, with individuals spending time at the edges of sea-surface height anomalies, frontal
areas characterised by sharp sea-surface temperature gradients or bathymetric features. My research ties in with broad and
multi-faceted MIMMP which is aimed at understanding top predator ecology at MI. Understanding the movements, and
subsequent foraging behaviours of southern elephant seals, on a broad and individual level, enables other researchers within
the group to identify factors that affect the population dynamics of SES at MI, in conjunction with other factors such as killer
whale predation and competition from the numerous fur seals residing on MI. My involvement in the MIMMP has included
several research trips to MI including a 13 month overwintering expedition as a field assistant and seal biologist
(2006/2007). I have assisted with SES immobilisations and the deployment of satellite relay data loggers on these animals.
My experience on Marion Island provided a the opportunity to gain first hand knowledge of elephant seal ecology and
provides a reference point for my research. I visited the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, Germany (2005) as part of
an on-going research collaboration that has resulted in publications related to elephant seal movement ecology. I received the
departmental (Zoology & Entomology) award for the best PhD oral presentation in 2007. I have been invited to review
manuscripts for Ecography (IF=4.207), Wildlife Biology (IF=0.77), African Zoology (IF=1.018), Marine Mammal Science
(IF=1.82) and Polar Biology (IF=2.071). I have published several scientific articles (n=26) and presented extensively at
conferences. Despite my publications being relatively recently published (2004 onwards), they are being cited by the
scientific community (h-score = 11 Scopus & Thompson ISI; h = 12 Google Scholar). As part of the MIMMP, I have assisted
with various student projects and continue to supervise students at the honours level providing important opportunities for
skills transfer and development of future researchers. My GIS skills and knowledge of animal tracking is currently extending
into the analysis of terrestrial data sets. I am collaborating with Mr P Beytell at the Namibian Ministry of Environment and
Tourism, analysing a multispecies tracking dataset in relation to water resources and fire patterns in arid environments.
