Business White PaperYour World Is on the Move

And then there’s the 25 percent of U .S . adults that Pew Research says own a tablet of one flavor or another today . That’s some insane device proliferation and diversity, but then again, that’s the world we live in . Ubiquitous mobility has become a normal part of everyday life . Isn’t it great? For your mobile users, yes . But for IT, not so much . All that per-vasive mobility and diversity makes it easy to see why BYOD isn’t just an industry trend, it can be an IT nightmare .

Of course, your mobility challenges aren’t limited to BYOD . What your mobile users do with their devices while they’re on the move can be just as frightening . According to a study from CTIA, between July 2011 and June 2012, mobile users in the United States consumed 1 .1 trillion MB of data . But just how is that data being con sumed? And where is it being shared? How much of that data represents enterprise files that mobile users shuffle onto Dropbox, Google Drive or other consumer-oriented cloud services just so they can easily get to it when they’re on the road? When users have a job to get done, after all, they do what they feel they have to do—even if it doesn’t always square with IT and security policies .

Even though end users wield tremen dous power in determining what they need to be fully productive, you’re still stuck with the responsibility of enabling that mobile productivity without com promising your organi-zation and its assets . “Yeah,” you might be saying . “I’ll need some luck with that .” But while addressing mobile needs spans a wide spectrum of areas and con cerns, there are three critical categories that need your attention when it comes to secure end user mobility:

Mobile device management

Mobile file access and sharing

Mobile printing

Unfortunately, many of today’s solutions and methods for handling these areas of concern actually put your organi za tion at greater risk . Others simply fail to deliver the mobile productivity gains your users need . Read on for a glimpse at how real-life scenarios in these areas can play out in a bad way for you and your users .

Mobile Opportunities and ChallengesThe mobility age we live in opens the door to tremendous opportunity and ability . Unfortunately, it also opens the door to a whole new world of problems for IT .

Real World Challenges for Mobile Device ManagementIn the realm of mobile device management, it’s becoming more and more common to hear things like the following:

New Sales Executive—“I need immediate access to all of the mobile apps that will help me hit the ground running .”

Compliance Manager for Healthcare Provider—“We can’t risk having any patient data on unmanaged devices .”

Executive Manager—“I just lost my smartphone . We need to nuke all the data on it so our confidential info doesn’t get leaked .”

Real World Challenges for Mobile File Access and SharingAccording to Venturebeat, one billion files are added to Dropbox ev-ery 48 hours . In the name of productivity, has Dropbox or some other consumer-oriented solution become your users’ modus operandi for accessing and sharing files on the go? Do you cringe at the sound of these overheard words?

Saying “Yes” to Both Mobile User Productivity and IT Peace of MindAbout 370,000 iPhones were sold each day in 2012 . That’s more than the number of babies born in the world each day . The numbers go even higher for Android mobile phone sales—which comprise more than 110 different devices made by fifteen different manufacturers .

Executive Manager—“I just landed in New York for our shareholders’ meeting . On the taxi ride over I need to review some sales figures stored on my desktop . Good thing they’re in my Dropbox folder too .”

Marketing Executive—“I’m about to meet with our advertising firm in Paris and I need to show them the latest competitive findings for our new campaign .”

Hospital Administrator—“While I make my rounds, I need to be able to add patient records regardless of whether I’m on my tablet or my smartphone .”

Real World Challenges for Mobile PrintingEven though almost everything has gone digital, the reality is that some-times we still need the printed page . But for something that should be so simple, finding the best printer to print to can be a monumental challenge for mobile users . What’s your solution for responding to these printing cries for help?

College student—“I’m halfway to school and I realized I need to print my project report from my tablet so the report will be waiting for me when I reach the lab .”

Loan officer—“I need to print a last-minute change to a loan agreement from my phone so I’m prepared for the closing .”

Executive Manager—“I’m in our London office for our board meeting and I need to print the management report from my iPad to a local printer before I go in the conference room .”

Multi-faceted Approach to Secure and Productive User MobilityMeeting your organization’s needs for secure and productive user mobil-ity requires a multi-faceted approach—one that includes letting users access and work on files from anywhere, print easily to any printer from any location and manage whatever devices they choose to use to per-form those tasks . There are a number of vendors who offer products in one of these areas or another, but a complete solution requires all three .

We get it . We deliver the mobility solutions that give your employees all the freedom and access they need to be fully productive . And it does so in a way that lets you leverage your existing investments and preserve the security and data governance your organization needs to stay on the right side of the compliance line .

Figure 2. Filr provides users with a consistent file access experience regardless of location or the device they choose to use .

Mobile File Access and SharingMicro Focus Filr lets files be as mobile as their users, but in a way that protects your cor porate assets . File access and sharing is as easy as clicking on a file in a directory . When users make changes to files, those changes will automatically be available to them via any other device they use . The ease of use and anytime, anywhere file access and sharing delivered by Filr eliminates the temptation for users to “go rogue” with consumer-grade products that put your corporate assets at risk .

Filr ensures security because the files stay in your existing file store, safe behind the corporate firewall—all while being avail able for users to access and share at any time, from anywhere, using almost any mobile device . You can even set granular access controls for specific users or for highly sensitive files that you may want people to view on mobile de-vices, but not sync . Equally important, Filr doesn’t force you to republish, replicate or create additional data repositories like competing solutions do . With Filr, you can mobilize your data without having to copy everything to a new system first . Users simply access their home directory or their trusty old pro jects folder and voila—all their files are right there so they can get to work . Finally, Filr works with both Micro Focus eDirectory™ and Microsoft Active Directory environments and leverages your existing security infrastructure to ensure that file access, synchronization and sharing remains secure—even for employees on the go .

Micro Focus iPrint leverages existing Internet connections, working securely across multiple networks and op-erating systems, so your mobile workforce can get instant global access to all available printing resources .

In fact, mobile users can expect the same print experience wherever they happen to roam—including the ability to select “favorite” printers (just like they do in Windows) and print to them without installing drivers or involving IT . Simple Micro Focus iPrint apps are also available for iOS and Android users so they can easily to print to your network printers even when they’re located outside of your firewall . Best of all, Micro Focus iPrint allows you to “mobilize” your existing fleet of printers rather than buying new devices, like some competitors require . It also works with any auditing and print accounting systems you may have deployed, so you can enable mobile print capabilities without disrupting the broader printing infrastructure .
