survivor Hallie Overfield, she is the daughter of Glenn and Kathy Over-field, and the granddaughter of Pete Heine.

The Overfield family found out that their 21 year old daughter, Hallie, had stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma just before Thanksgiving in Novem-ber of 2011. With this diagnosis, they finally found out the reason she had been so sick for so long and Hallie begin the fight for her life. The fam-ily, with the help of the Baton Rouge doctors, decided that MD Anderson in Houston was the best place for Hallie to go, despite the fact that their health insurance would only be paying 80% of the medical bill since it was an out of state facility. Upon arrival at MD Anderson, her condition was so critical that Hallie was immediately admitted to the hospital where she remained for 5 days. On the 5th day, she started chemo treatments and a trial drug. Hallie and her mom, Kathy, returned to Houston every week for six weeks to receive the chemo and the trial drug. She then continued her chemo treatments at Mary Bird in Ba-ton Rouge, traveling back to Houston once a month.

About three months into the chemo treatments, the doctors discovered that one of the chemo drugs was damag-ing Hallie’s lungs. This drug was im-

mediately removed from the chemo regimen. Doctors will be monitoring her lungs closely over the next few years. In May of 2012, Hallie started running a high fever. Tests revealed that she had a staph infection on the tip of her PICC line. The PICC was removed and placed in her other arm and she remained in the hospital in Baton Rouge for 17 days. In June, af-ter the infection was cleared up, Hall-ie was able to receive her last chemo treatment. As of January, 2014, she is now battling PCOS, polycystic ovary syndrome and is insulin resistant, but with the help of her doctors, she will also win that battle.

Hallie’s scans presently still show enlarged lymph nodes, but no active cancer. She will be returning to MD Anderson every 3-4 months for the next 3 years for follow up scans and doctor visits.

Hallie was able to go back to col-lege in January of 2013 and is study-ing radiologic technology at Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas. She looks forward to graduating in May of 2015 and pursuing her dream of being a Rad Tech.

“We are so grateful to family and friends for their love, prayers and fi-nancial support. We would like to thank the American Cancer Society, especially the Zachary chapter, for their support and for making this a night that Hallie will never forget. Since Hallie was a little girl, her fa-vorite Disney princess has been Ariel

from “The Little Mermaid.” Thanks to the American Cancer Society, Hallie’s dream of being a princess has come true. Most of all, we want to thank God for the MANY miracles that have happened in our lives since that fateful day in November 2011 that changed our lives forever,” says Kathy Overfield, Hallie’s mother.

The public is invited to attend Re-lay For Life, which is being held at the BREC Zachary Community Park on April 11th, starting at 5:00 pm and ending when we can’t “Relay” anymore! Please come support your community and those you know who have been touched in some way by cancer. If you have any questions about the event and the activities leading up to it, please contact Re-nee Beadle at [email protected] or (225) 413-7282. With the help of this community we can all come together to take up the fight against cancer. Thank you for your contin-ued support.

MARDI GRAS continued from page 1

“A cancer diagnosis can be over-whelming so having convenient ac-cess to high quality cancer care closer to home will help ease the challenges of treatment and recovery,” said Foun-dation Director Theresa Payment. “When you make a gift to the Lane Foundation, it is comforting to know that your dollars stay right here at Lane, helping to provide superior health care to the entire region,” she added.

Lane Regional has partnered with Baton Rouge General to open the $4.5million state-of-the-art Radia-tion Oncology Center on Lane’s cam-pus. Led by cancer treatment experts Dr. William Russell and Dr. Andrew Lauve, the first patients were seen on Monday, February 24th.

PUBLIC WORKS continued from page 1median. This new 4-lane boulevard should eventually turn into a real com-mercial corridor. As we know, roads are forever projects and can bring posi-tive changes to a particular area. ”

“The contract calls for a 210 day build project,’’ the Mayor emphasized. “If Industrial Enterprises gets started on the road work within 30 days, as they anticipate, we should be opening the new road in late October.”

“We will have one stop light on the road, but we anticipate this stop light to be temporary as we intend to build a round-about to replace the stop light in the near future. Of course the weather will play a major factor in this project, as it has in the Rollins Road project. I saw some of those guys today and we were talking about how much the weather was hurting the project.”

“By the end of 2014, the City of Zachary will be in very good shape with its public works project,” Mayor Amrhe-in affirmed. “We are moving along fine with our gas line updates. On the sewer line project, we’ve spent about 60% of our allotted money. This is .95% mon-ey which, in my opinion, is almost free money, with such a low interest rate.”

Another major road project is the four lane landscaped boulevard road from Hwy 964 (Old Scenic Hwy) to Barnett Road on Hwy 64. The cost will around $7.5 million. Some funding is coming from the state and parish gov-ernment for this project.

“This road expansion has great potential for the City of Zachary be-cause our Sports Park is located on the road, and also the new YMCA and Americana. It is my understanding that Americana will begin construction on their first commercial units within a couple of months. It is also my under-standing, that the response, as for as

membership in the YMCA, has been extremely well received by people liv-ing in the Zachary area.”

“It is not a sure thing, but Zachary’s third motel could be located some-where near the Ballpark area on the new four lane west of 964,’’ Mayor Amrhein acknowledged. “The goals I set upon becoming Mayor three years ago were to upgrade our infrastructure and set the table for economic activ-ity. We haven’t yet completed all my goals, but we are well on our way to accomplishing them.”

“Another project that is almost “shovel ready” is the improvement needed for the Annison House so we can open it to the public. We have the plans drawn and approved. We will have a well-designed handicap ramp on the north side of the house. The public restroom that is being required will be located in a half pavilion type building a short distance from the handicapped ramp that has been de-signed to match the style of the An-nison House. We have $137,000 in grant money to spend on this upgrade to meet building code and we intend to spend every bit of it to get the Annison House open to the public.”

David Amrhein is unique, not only among mayors in Louisiana, but elect-ed officials in general as Mayor Am-rhein is a registered “No-Party” voter and elected official.

“Some people thought my “No-Party” status would be a factor in my first run for Mayor,’’ Mayor Amrhein related. “I thought that people would vote for the person, not the political party here in Zachary.”

“That was very gratifying for me because I don’t like political parties. I think elected officials should be all about who they are as a person. When I first registered to vote, I was asked was I a Democrat or a Republican? My answer was that I was neither. The

register told me that I could register as “No-Party” and that is what I did.”

The Amrhein family first came to the Zachary area in the 1880’s. The Mayor’s grandfather, Robert Am-rhein, Sr. was the first Police Chief in Zachary. Robert Amrhein, Jr., father of the Mayor, began Amrhein and Sons Hardware store on Main nearly four decades ago.

“I grew up in hardware store,’’ May-or Amrhein recalled. “If you weren’t playing sports while in high school you were expected to work in the store on a daily basis, which I did. Since graduat-ing from Zachary High School in 1977, Amrhein and Sons Hardware store has been my livelihood.”

During David Amrhein’s two terms on the Zachary City Council, he continued to work the hardware busi-ness. Since taking office as Mayor, he has basically been a full time Mayor. Amrhein’s Mom and Dad, now enter-ing their 8th decade of life continue to manage and operate the business with

their employees.“I’m primed and ready to run for

re-election,” Mayor Amrhein affirmed. “There are still several things that I have not accomplished which I think would be good for the people of Zach-ary. I haven’t heard of anyone else yet deciding to run for Mayor of Zachary.”

“One thing that I have emphasized during my term in office, and even during my two terms on the Council, is there should never be any real fighting between the Council and Mayor. I’ve made sure that hasn’t happened be-cause it is a detriment to the people of Zachary. We can disagree, but still find ways to work together for the benefit of the people who elected us.”

“I just want to be known as David Amrhein, a guy who did a good job as Mayor of Zachary during his time in office,” Mayor Amrhein said in con-clusion. “It has been an extreme plea-sure to me personally to be Mayor and I certainly want to continue through another term in office.”
