Zachary’s basketball legend takes place among the most famous to have ever playedBy Kent Lowe
Call him one of the difference makers of LSU Basketball in the 1940s. Call him the next great LSU star since the days of the program’s first All-American Sparky Wade in the 1930s. Call him an NBA All-Star and NBA Champion. Finally, call Frank Brian an LSU Athletic Hall of Famer.
For Brian, the admittance into his school Hall of Fame completes a state triple crown having been elected to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches in 1986 and the Louisiana Association of Basket-ball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1987. Frank Brian was also the first induct-ee into the Zachary High School Hall of Fame.
Brian, a high school standout from Zachary, lettered in men’s basketball at LSU from 1942-43 and 1946-47 as a guard. His college career was inter-rupted by military service in World War II, serving in the US Army from 1944-46. He was named All-South-eastern Conference in basketball in 1942-43 and again in 1947 after re-turning from the war. Brian also par-ticipated in the 1943 SEC Track and Field Championships in four events.
He went on to have a stellar pro-fessional basketball career, earning National Basketball League Rookie of the Year honors in 1948 for the Anderson Packers, NBL All-Star honors two times and NBA All-Star honors two times. He played in the 1955 and 1956 NBA Champion-ships for the Fort Wayne Pistons and scored 6,663 points during a 10-year career. Brian is retired and living in Zachary.
Brian played at LSU at a time when admission to basketball games at LSU was just 55 cents. But his years at LSU both before and after the war marked good times for the
program. LSU went from fourth to second with his appearance in 1943 and finished second in 1947.
It was written in the papers of the day of Brian:
“Ten years ago in a small Louisi-ana town a nine-year-old boy tracked the high school dirt court with his bare feel as he sharpened his eye for the basketball goal. So small was he could hardly shove the ball up to the hoop.
“For seven years that fellow played on that same dirt court in Zachary. In his senior year in high school a gym was built, and he trans-ferred his talent to the hardwood. Then last year he came to the Uni-versity where he starred on the frosh cage outfit (1941). This year (1941-42), he did the same thing on the var-sity team.”
Brian averaged 14 points in 1943 in earning All-Conference honors, third in the SEC in scoring. The “slim youth with plenty of speed was strong in the SEC Tournament, get-ting 12 versus Auburn and 18 against Alabama in LSU wins.
But Brian’s career would take a
turn that student-athletes of the “Greatest Generation” would have to deal with. In fact, it had affected LSU during that 1942 season as some players had to report to duty in World War II. Coach Harry Ra-benhorst had been gone for over a year, serving in the United States Navy.

at LSU, including the remainder of basketball season. On May 16, 1943, Brian left for Camp Beauregard, the U.S. Army reception center near Al-exandria, La.
By Sept. 4, he had been trans-ferred to Glennan General Hospital where Private First Class Frank Bri-an found a unit with a strong camp team, the Glennan Generals.

4-H Trail Ride set for September 28By James RonaLd sKains
“Our Trail Ride on Saturday, September 28 is to raise money for our local 4-H Chapters to ensure that we will have monies available for prizes, ribbons and trophies,’’ Chris Pellerin of Zachary told the POST. “Our plans are to rendezvous at the back arena of the 5-D Western Store on Plank Road in Zachary. We want the wagons and riders to be rolling by 9 AM.”
“Our route will be north on Plank Road to the Pride/Plains Road, then go right till we reach Tucker Road and then go south on Tucker. Some place along Tucker Road we plan to stop for lunch. The Trail Ride will end up back at 5-D Western Store on Plank. Afterwards, we plan to have a party for the participants and 4-H kids back at our house on Arleen Street off Blackwater Road.’’
Tom and Betty are full brother and sister palomino mules about 4 years old that Chris and his wife Shelly have been working for three years on trial rides, pleasure jaunts, and at “plow days.” Plow days are popular in the Florida and Feliciana Parishes where farmers and young people with an eye on farming meth-ods of yesteryear come together for a fun day, highlighted by good heart-ed competition of plowing ground
using mules and plows from days gone by.
“Tom and Betty have been in our family for about 3 years.’’ Pellerin,
originally from Duson, Louisiana explained. “My dad was a big trail rider and horse rider, and especially loved mules. His best friend, Ken-neth Landry, whom I consider as my uncle, is into trail rides and horses and mules, also. Through Kenneth’s help after my dad died, I was able to acquire Tom and Betty primarily to pull our covered wagon.’’
“My dad and Kenneth Landry made the 200th Bi-Centennial Trail Ride in 2003 that originated in Nat-chez and crossed Louisiana follow-ing the Old El Camino Real. I per-sonally wanted to make that trip in 2003, but I just couldn’t take that much time off from work. It was all filmed and we are having DVD’s made of the Bi-Centennial Trail Ride.”
Pellerin is no stranger to horses and cattle having helped his dad as a teenager take care of 300 mama cows on their ranch in the Duson area. However, it was the Bi-Cen-tennial Trail ride that got the Peller-ins interested in mules.
“Murle Cheatwood who lives in Saline, Louisiana is the real mule man. Murle and his wife Diane helped organize the 2003 Trail Ride across Louisiana. My dad had a camp in the piney woods near Sa-line where he got acquainted with

Tom & Betty Ready to Pull the LoadMurle and his mules, and trail rides. As a kid growing up, it was always exciting to ride in a trail ride, so now Shelly and I are doing what we can to let kids experience the camarade-rie of a day on the trail.”
“We have a 40 foot float that has been donated for our use on the 28th of September, so we will have plenty of room for 4-H kids who don’t have horses to ride or wagons to ride in for the event. Trail Rides and all 4-H activities are truly family affairs. It also teaches the kids responsibility and team work.’’
“There is plenty of room left for kids to register to participate. Also, we are thankful for the sponsors we have but could use a few more spon-sors,” Pellerin emphasized. “We are planning on this being the first of many annual 4-H Trail Ride that we are part of.’’
This writer first met Tom and Betty and the Pellerin group on a Saturday morning a couple weeks ago on Blackwater Road. Pel-lerin was “prepping” the Palomino mules for the September 4-H Trail Ride. They were journeying down Blackwater Road at about a 5 miles an hour pace. The Pellerin Covered wagon was pulling a rubber-tired trailer on which several kids were riding, sitting on hay bales. Other kids along Tom and Betty’s route were running out to the road in or-der to get a better look at this scene from yesteryear when horses and mules were common sights pulling wagons filled with people, produce,
or other items that needed transpor-tation from point A to point B before automobiles became the mode of transportation around the country for all but special events.
Those participating on the “prep ride’’ back in August were, in ad-dition to Chris Pellerin, Kenneth Landry, Kinslee Pellerin, Kyra Gree-ly, Annalyse Greely, Billy Amas-topoulous, David Desormeaux, and John Langlinois.
Kinslee Pellerin is Chris and Shelly’s 8 year old daughter whose special 4-H project is a show pig. It is a variety of the white belt Hamp-shire pig but with a larger white belt. Billy Amastooulous is Chris Pellerin father-in-law who now lives in the Shreveport area. Billy and family, along with daughter Shelly, grew up on her grandfather’s wheat ranch near Wichita Falls, Texas.
“It was a big change for Shelly going from being on a wheat ranch to marrying a guy who is into live-stock. It didn’t take long for Shelly to begin to really enjoy being around livestock,’’ Pellerin related. “We are slowly building up our live-stock “herd”, adding a few cattle, some chickens, pigs and horses and mules,’’ Pellerin acknowledged. “Our little boy who is only two, is already a big fan of Tom and Betty, Kinslee’s pig and our horses.’’
Pellerin’s “day job” is in manage-ment with McConnell Brick Compa-ny on Choctaw in BR. Shelly works for a downtown law firm; however, their passion is for their family in-
cluding Tom and Betty, trail rides and 4-H Kids.

team has started the season strong in an attempt to unseat district rival St. Joseph’s Academy. The team is 6-2 on the season with recent vic-tories over Episcopal High, Broad-moor High, and a clean sweep over Central High.
Coach Madeline Blanchard-Gugich, who is in her third year as Head Coach, believes this is her most talented team yet.

Area Test Drivers, Superior Ford Raise Big Bucks for ZHS
After raising nearly $18,000 over the past three years, each year better than the previous, Superior Ford teamed up with the Zachary High School PTO last Saturday arranging for almost 300 area drivers to Drive 4 UR School. According to a statement from Ford Motor Company, the Drive 4 UR School program began as a community fundraiser to help offset the continual budget cuts to vital arts, music and sports programs at schools across the country. The Zachary event was the fourth one sponsored by Superior Ford. For each test-drive, the school will receive $20 from Ford Motor Company totaling $6,000.

Outdoorsman Banquet Sept. 24 at FBCZFirst Baptist Church of Zachary
will host its 12th Annual Outdoorsman Banquet on Tuesday, Sept. 24, and wel-come Burl Cain, Warden at Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, as the guest speaker.

Exhibits will open at the Family Life Center at First Baptist Church of Zachary at 4 p.m., and a dinner will ber served at 6 p.m. followed by a presenta-tion by Warden Cain.
Burl Cain began his career in cor-rections in 1976. He has served in nu-merous positions with the Louisiana Department of Corrections. He became warden at Louisiana State Penitentiary (LSP) at Angola in 1995.
Angola was once called the “Blood-iest Prison in America” and under War-
den Cain’s leadership has become one of the safest, most secure and progres-sive prisons in the nation.
Examples of some of these changes are: the Joan Horner Center of the New Orleans Baptist Seminary; six chapels; the KLSP TV station; a multi-award winning Hospice Program; the expan-sion of the world famous prison rodeo and arts & crafts show; and numerous other programs that encourage hope in a seemingly “hopeless” environment.
There will be numerous door prizes along with hunting and fishing games for kids. Featured door prizes include a Johnny Morris rod and reel, a Cajun Microwave and a BBQ grill.

In fact, Brian’s game didn’t suffer because of the war, it may have got-ten better. He was able to find time to continue his love of the sport while serving as a medical technologist at the hospital. In fact, in 1945 he was named the most outstanding player of the annual Eighth Service Com-mand Army Service Forces Round-Robin finals, the last of three con-secutive tournaments he won MVP honors.
Today, Brian would say that his playing during the war years “en-hanced his basketball skills and allowed him to stay a part of the game.”
He would later be transferred first to Tilton General Hospital at Fort Dix, N.J., where he played for the Tilton General Hospital team in August 1945 where he was stationed for the final part of his service time, being discharged on April 1, 1946. Just prior to his discharge, Brian was promoted to Master Sergeant.
In his recommendation for Frank’s promotion to Master Ser-geant, 2LT. Thomas A. Bello said of Brian:
“He is in direct charge of the su-pervision of 20 instructors, including three field supervisors. In this capac-ity, he supervises and corrects work in the gymnasium, at the Main Hos-pital, and on the wards at the Annex. He is a most competent physical in-structor and an excellent leader. He is efficient, energetic, and a capable organizer.”

Tigers showed during his return for the 1946-47 season as Brian showed he was one of the most poised and polished players ever to don the LSU garb, despite being away from the college game for three long years.
It was at that time that Brian
was compared with LSU’s first All-American, Sparky Wade, who led LSU to its mythical national championship in 1935. His ability was tested to the fullest on Feb. 21, 1947, when LSU and Tulane would meet in the Parker Ag Center on the LSU campus.
Part of the story that night was the crowd of 11,500, the largest crowd to make the turnstiles click for a basketball game this side of the Mason-Dixon Line, and the other was that LSU took care of the Wave 55-40.

“That Brian – he an All-Ameri-can if ever there was one. Did you see anything like it before? Yes, he’s one of the best players we’ve ever had. Sparky Wade was a differ-ent type. A better ball handler and dribbler and perhaps a better long-distance shot, but this Brian, he can do anything – and good.”
The respect Rabenhorst showed to Brian was reciprocated by Brian to Rabenhorst:
“He was tough but fair,” Brian said of his fellow Hall of Famer. “The players on the team during game would have suggestions on needed plays that in their opinion would help advance the team to a win. Coach Rabenhorst was open to suggestions which would help the team as a whole.”
Brian averaged 16 points in conference play and the pro scouts knew all about him. With a wife and family and some seven years playing the game in college and the army, the money for the future of
his life and family was more than he could pass up.
He signed with the Anderson Packers of the National Basketball League. For two years he played in the NBL with the Packers, starting in April 1947, shortly after the col-lege season ended. By the end of the 1947-48 season, he was an NBL All-Star and the NBL Rookie of the Year at 11.3 points per game. The next year, he led the Packers with just under 10 points a game, was a First-Team All-Star and the league champions.
The NBL folded and the Pack-ers moved to the National Basket-ball Association, where Brian was the No. 3 scorer in the league with a 17.8 points per game average. When Anderson fell out of the league, he would move to Tri-Cities where he averaged 16.8 points and 3.9 assists. He would be in the top 10 in NBA scoring a third straight year in 1952 with a 15.9 average.
Over seven seasons, Brian would average 12.3 points and 2.6 assists, finishing his career with the Fort Wayne Pistons. He was two-time NBA All-Star and his team played for the NBA title in 1955 and 1956.
The truth was basketball was a different game when Frank Brian played. Because of World War II, so was life for people of his age. But he starred in a time and era when his silky-smooth style of game allowed him to shine. His star will grow even brighter on Friday when he becomes just the eighth men’s basketball player (including teammates Joe Bill Adcock and Bobby Lowther) in the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame.

Zachary Elementary Schools’ Fall Fest and Silent Auction
The annual Fall Festival and Silent Auction benefitting all five of Zachary’s Elementary Schools will take place on Saturday, October 19th from 10:00 a.m. -3:00p.m. at Copper Mill Elementary. Pulled pork sandwich dinners will be sold, and the cafeteria will be filled with auction items and deluxe gift baskets. There will also be a concession stand, live entertainment, and carnival-style
games for the kids! Tickets for the pulled pork sandwich dinners can be purchased through any Zachary Elementary student.
