The Homeowners Association of award-winning Copper Mill Golf Community today announced they have formed a definitive agreement to purchase the golf course from Ross Bruce, developer of Copper Mill. The acquisition will solidify Copper Mill’s position as one of Louisiana’s premier golf communities consistently ranked in “Golf Digest’s Top 10” in the state.
“We take great pride in our commu-nity and award-winning golf course,” says James Maughan, president of Copper Mill’s homeowner association board. “The acquisition will ensure Copper Mill’s future and enable us to expand the course’s amenities with a full-featured clubhouse. We’re com-mitted to providing an excellent golf experience, value to our residents, and a premier recreation destination in the Baton Rouge metro area.”
Copper Mill Golf Club and Com-munity was founded in 2004 in Zacha-ry, Louisiana and has consistently been ranked in leading golf media as one of the state’s finest courses. Copper Mill is a “links-style” course reminiscent of those in Scotland featuring a unique combination of three Par 3s, three Par 4s and three Par 5s on each nine. The course, which features the native terrain of Louisiana, weaves it way through grasses, wetlands, and marshes. This
natural layout, coupled with over 50 strategically placed bunkers and water hazards on 13 of the holes, make the course a Louisiana masterpiece.
“The strong partnership we’ve forged with the homeowners asso-ciation has been instrumental in the negotiation of this acquisition,” adds Ross Bruce, founder and developer of Copper Mill. “The transition of owner-ship is extremely positive for the golf-ing community and I look forward to witnessing the course’s continued suc-cess.” Recently, Bruce disclosed to the Copper Mill homeowners his intent to close the course as of Jan. 1, 2014 due to financial constraints.
The acquisition will be finalized in the current quarter. All golf club mem-berships, tee-times, and course cou-pons will be honored under the new ownership.

U. S. Army veteran and Baker Police Department patrolman Keith London will lead the Pledge of Al-legiance. Officer London recently received his honorable discharge after service as a Combat Engineer with the 927th Sapper Unit of the Army National Guard.
Remarks and benediction will be offered by U. S. Navy veteran and Lane Regional Medical Cen-ter Chief Executive Officer Ran-
dall M. Olson. Mr. Olson served 8 years of active and reserve duty, including a stint aboard the USS
William Wood stationed in Athens, Greece. He retired from service in 1980 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Refreshments will be served following the ceremony. The pub-lic is invited.
In addition, on Monday, No-vember 11, Northwestern Middle School will present a Veterans Day program. They invite all vet-erans from the Zachary communi-ty and surrounding area to attend. The program will be presented at 3 different times, so the public can choose the time that is best for them to attend.

The Zachary Police Depart-ment has received a grant for about $39,000.00 from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission that will be used to fund 1100 hours of manpower to enforce impaired driv-ing, seat belt use and speeding.
The program aims to reduce al-cohol-related fatalities and under-age drinking while increasing seat belt usage among drivers and pas-sengers. Zachary will be conduct-ing a DWI Check Point in the near future.

The Funky Junky, a new thrift store located at 3897 Hwy 19 in Zachary (next to the Holiday Inn Ex-press), is now open. The store will feature many items for sale such as clothing, vintage items, collectibles, kitchen items, and baby items. The Funky Junky also has a large selec-tion of athletic clothing and designer jeans.
The Funky Junky is owned by Robert and Heather English. The couple have been residents of Zach-ary for almost 2 years, moving here from Florida. They have two chil-dren, Sydney and Bishop, both are Legendz baseball players. “I have never lived in a place like Zachary where the community completely supports itself,” says Heather. “The goal that I have with the store is Zachary helping Zachary.”

nations to the Zachary Food Bank. Anyone bringing in a non-perish-able canned food item will get 10% off their purchase.
“I wanted to open the kind of thrift store that I enjoy shopping in, especially a kid-friendly one. Kids are always welcome at my store. I have a special playroom that is safe for kids to play in while mom shops,” says Heather.
Donations can be dropped off at the store anytime. If donated items cannot be sold, there will be a dumpster for recycling on site so that no item goes to waste.

Cub Scout Troop 72 Holds Rain Gutter Regatta Campout Cub Scout Troop 72 of St. John the Bap-tist Catholic Church recently conducted their first campout of the year to coincide with the Rain Gutter Regatta Boat race. Participants camped out at the Georgia Pacific Pavilion behind Port Hudson National Cemetery.
NMS Auditorium at 5200 E. Cen-tral Ave. Parking will be available for guests near the auditorium. Admission is free.
The first performance will begin at 7:45 a.m., the second will begin at 9:40 a.m., and the third perfor-mance will begin at 1:00 p.m.
Visitors who plan to attend should enter through the front au-ditorium doors and take time to look at our exhibits there. Refresh-ments will be served for the guests following each performance.
History of Veterans DayWorld War I – known at the
time as “The Great War” - offi-cially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an ar-mistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied na-tions and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the elev-enth day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”
In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the follow-ing words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with grati-tude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity
it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”
The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m.
The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words:
Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peace-ful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and
Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exer-cises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual un-derstanding between nations; and
Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives con-curring), that the President of the United States is requested to is-sue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Gov-ernment buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.

The Baker Fire Department and Slaughter Volunteer Fire Department will receive urgently needed Turn Out Gear including helmets and gloves under the Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigade™ grant program. The Geor-gia-Pacific Port Hudson Operations will present the fire units with their checks for $5,000 each to purchase the equipment on October 28.
“It is with great pleasure that we accept this grant from Georgia Pa-cific for our department. Georgia Pacific has been and always will be an asset to our community extend-ing their helping hand not only to our organization but many more through-out Louisiana. We will use this mon-ey wisely and will always be forever grateful,” commented Danny L. Ed-wards, Baker Fire Chief.
“It is critical that our firefighters have the equipment needed to pro-vide the best service possible to our community. We are very thankful for this grant, which helps us keep our firefighters safe and allows us to place more firefighters in service, thereby increasing the protection to our community,” remarked Jimbo Noland, Slaughter Volunteer Fire De-partment Fire Chief.
A record 55 fire departments will receive Georgia-Pacific Buck-et Brigade grants this year totaling $270,000, the largest amount since the program began in 2006. The pro-gram has now surpassed the $1.25 million mark in cash grants to fire departments that serve Georgia-Pa-cific’s facility communities across the country.
“We’re proud to have the oppor-
tunity to meet the significant needs by our local community fire depart-ment,” said Keith Wahoske of Geor-gia-Pacific’s Port Hudson Operations. “The Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigade grants allow first-responders to better ensure the safety and security of the people in our communities, including our employees.”
The grants, generally ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, are based on need and are funded by the Georgia-Pacific Foundation and local Georgia-Pacific facilities. This year’s program appli-cants requested funds to replace items such as worn out protective clothing, cracked helmets, aging hoses and nozzles, and hand-held radios – es-sential equipment that will help keep firefighters safer and make their jobs easier.
The National Volunteer Fire Coun-cil (NVFC) says about 70 percent of the more than one million U.S. fire-fighters are volunteers. Georgia-Pacif-ic has partnered with the NVFC since 2008 to increase awareness about the grant program. Georgia-Pacific also gives all grant applicants free NVFC memberships, which provides access to tools, resources, programs and ad-vocacy for first-responders across the nation.
“The NVFC is pleased to partner with Georgia-Pacific, which has do-nated nearly $1.5 million in grants, fire safety educational materials and memberships to local volunteer first-responder communities,” said Heather Schafer, NVFC’s executive director. “This support goes a long way in help-ing departments protect the communi-ties they serve.”

Zachary Community Food Bank Drive will be held throughout the month of November. The City of Zachary, Zachary Community Schools, Zachary Men’s Club, Rota-ry Club of Zachary, Legendz Sports Academy and area business will all ban together to help feed the needy. Donations will remain in our local food pantry and will benefit families in our community.
A gumbo sale will be held on Friday, November 15 in the City of
Zachary Parking Lot with tickets available for $5. 100% of the pro-ceeds of the sale will go directly to the Zachary Community Food Pan-try. Paul Mier of Chris’ Specialty Meats and Cajun Catch, along with his team will be on location cooking the gumbo.
In addition to the gumbo sale, students in Zachary Community Schools will be competing to see who can collect the most canned goods. Donations will be delivered

The new pantry, located at 5640 Rollins Road offi-cially opened this June, marking the 25th Anniversary that the Zachary Food Pantry has been in existence. The pantry is staffed by 32 dedicat-ed volunteer workers who serve 374 families a month in our community.
Christmas in the Country Tour of Homes SetOwners of four stylish and dis-
tinct West Feliciana private homes – two modern, two historic – will open their doors to visitors during the Friends Of The West Felici-ana Parish Library - Christmas in the Country 2013 Tour of Homes. The event showcases architecture and interior design in a quartet of dwellings set in the rolling Feli-ciana hills and in downtown St. Francisville.
The home tour, set for Sunday, December 8 from noon till 5 p.m., is part of the parish’s popular Christmas celebration on the first weekend of December. Last year’s Tour of Homes was the most popu-lar yet, and organizers expect this season’s crowds to be even bigger.
The day begins at 11 a.m. with an optional jazz brunch at the Bluffs Resort Clubhouse, 14233 Sunrise Way, featuring trum-pet player John Gray. (The jazz
brunch must be purchased sepa-rately.) Doors to the private homes open at noon. The tour trail takes visitors on the following itinerary:
Home of Betsy & Christophe Levasseur. Built in 2012, this sprawling Acadian-style country house, designed by architect Mark Matthews, features extensive use of reclaimed hardwood on floors and beams throughout. The mantel over the fireplace is a hand-hewn railroad trestle.
Home of Coco & David Trep-pendahl. In 2003, the Treppendahls bought this beautiful, sanctuary-like property and turned a trac-tor barn into a refined-rustic de-sign jewel. The pole-beam house, called Dellamata by its owners, retains the original tin roof, but has taken on cypress board and batten siding. Working from her own artistic conception, architect Coco Treppendahl – whose studio
is on the premises -- built Dellabut graceful incline to a hollow below.
Home of Anna Macedo. Well-known area artist Anna Macedo recently moved into this Ferdinand Street home, which doubles as her studio. Owned by Peggy Sanders and Sue Catchings, the house was originally built as a two-room cot-tage in the mid-1800s. The current owners made significant additions in the 1970s. Macedo’s quirky eye for detail is well-known from her work in Country Roads magazine, so visitors are sure to enjoy an insider’s look at the environment she’s created.
St. Francisville’s wonderful main-street shops – along Fer-dinand, Commerce, and Royal Streets -- will be bursting with Christmas cheer, so guests won’t want to miss all they have to offer as they pass by on their way to the next destination.
Visitors are invited to cap off their day at the Bluffs Clubhouse with coffee, dessert, and shopping at the Boughs Of Holly Boutique, a seasonal pop-up shop featuring the work of local artists and arti-sans. There will be Christmas mu-sic and decorations at the Bluffs chapel, and, back at the Club-house, a special 4:30 p.m. drawing that will award valuable prizes to tour ticketholders (must be pres-ent to win).
Tour tickets are $20 per person, with proceeds going to Friends Of The West Feliciana Parish Library. First Annual Zachary Gleaux Run to be held at Americana Development
on November 30, 2013Zachary is preparing for it’s first ever
Gleaux Run, happening Saturday, Nov. 30 at 6 pm, along the streets of the new Americana development!
Athletes, individuals, kids of all ages, businesses and companies are invited to get gleauxing, form a team and partici-pate in the 5K Fun Run/Walk. Sign-up is now available at www.imathlete/events/zacharygleauxrun. Teams must have a minimum of six people to participate but can have an unlimited amount to join, and be sure to getcreative as prizes will be awarded to the fastest male and fastest female racer, as well as the individual and team with the most festive glow items and best neon clothes. Participants are asked to get creative, but keep it clean! All finishers will receive a one of a kind glow in the dark medal. The first 100 registrants will receive a long sleeve race t-shirt.
There will be Gleaux Stations for pho-tographs under a black light and an after party featuring food, drinks, giveaways and a DJ.
Zachary’s first annual Gleaux Run benefits the Zachary Chamber of Com-merce, with a portion of the proceeds go-ing to create and maintain walking paths and biking trails throughout the city of Zachary.
The 3.1 mile course is open to run-ners, walkers, joggers, strollers, wagons and bikes--just make sure everything has lights or glow materials. Zachary’s first ever Gleaux Run is a family-friendly event and open to all. The starting line will have corrals for each group so that runners can line up easily in the front.
Spectators are encouraged to get in the spirit and glow too! All spectators are wel-come to the after party and along the run/walk route.
