Informed Voters Project the

of the National Association of Women Judges

One very important program of the National Association of WomenJudges is the Informed Voters Project.

As judges, we are well aware of the politics and special interest groupsthat threaten judicial independence. Since 2010, special interests groupsand individuals have increasingly spent more time and money topublicly attack judges whose decisions or backgrounds they did notagree with to influence the outcome of state elections across thecountry.

The Informed Voters Project recognizes that the success or failure ofthese special interests groups rests on their ability to potentially misleadand sway voters. Our mission is to educate voters in a nonpartisanmanner about how judges are selected, and how the public can learnabout their judicial candidates and the role of the judiciary in ourdemocracy. Through the development of educational materials andresources for public education, the Informed Voters Project providescitizens with the tools they need to make an informed vote and protectfair and impartial courts.

National Association Women Judges

NAWJ Mission The National Association of Women Judges' mission is to: promote the judicialrole of protecting the rights of individuals under the rule of law through strong, committed, diverse judicial leadership, fairness and equality in the courts, andequal access to justice.

GOALSSince its formation in 1979, NAWJ has fought to preserve judicialindependence, to ensure equal justice and access to the courts for women, minorities, and other historically disfavored groups, and to achieve fairnessand equality for vulnerable populations. Led by two visionary women—JusticeJoan Dempsey Klein and Justice Vaino Spencer— 100 brave and intrepidwomen judges met and formed an organization dedicated to the above ideals.Throughout its history, NAWJ has been providing judicial education oncutting-edge issues; striving to develop judicial leaders; increasing the numberof women on the bench at all levels in order for the judiciary to moreaccurately reflect the role of women in a democratic society; and improvingthe administration of justice to provide gender-fair decisions for both maleand female litigants.

MEMBERSHIP From the day it was founded, NAWJ has been committed to diversity inour membership. Our organization welcomes both men and women. Ourmembership includes trial and appellate, administrative, tribal and militaryjudges on federal, state and tribal courts at every level of the judiciarythroughout the country, and international tribunals, as well as attorneys, lawclerks, law students and law professors committed to our mission. As membersof the International Association of Women Judges [IAWJ], which NAWJfounded, we meet and interact with judges from all over the world.
