COVER STORY - WORLD DAY FOR SAFETY 2019 | APNA HAI TOTAL

03 | THIRD EDITION - 2019

For eleven years now, the World Day for Safety has federated Total’s employees and their partners from external companies around major shared themes that illustrate Safety as a core value. The theme for Total’s World Safety Day 2019 was

“Zero Fatal Accidents - For me, For You, For All”.The prevailing message behind this theme was constructed upon the viewpoint of no loss of life occurring as a resultant of a work- related accident.

In order to avoid pitfalls and instances pertaining to workplace accidents, everyone involved must know how to plan and react to such circumstances. Keeping in line with this mantra, TOTAL PARCO Pakistan Limited (TPPL) also celebrated World Safety Day across all of its locations in Pakistan, advocating the same message of Zero Fatal Accidents. On the occasion, 40 individual sessions were conducted in the Lahore Head Office and the various Regional Offices at Karachi, Faisalabad, Multan & Islamabad. The event was also celebrated at the Operational facilities viz Machike, Keamari, Tarujaba, Shikarpur and Rawalpindi Terminals, along with the warehouses in Islamabad, Lahore, Multan, Gujranwala and Karachi, including the Lube Oil Blending Plant (LOBP). A total of 762 personnel (permanent & third party staff) attended these sessions, appreciating the informative & interactive sessions which reinforced their commitment to safety. Efforts of the Health, Safety, Environment & Quality (HSEQ) team were acknowledged as effective dissemination of information is always ensured by them.

The aim of the World Safety Day was to emphasize the right to a safe and healthy working environment, which is respected at all levels through a system of defined rights, responsibilities and duties, whereby the highest priority is accorded to the principle of prevention.

WORLD DAYFOR SAFETY

“Safety, as you know, is a core value. Innovation helps us to improve our business. But sometimes innovation, through operational excellences, is bringing added value to our businesses. This is where innovation and safety can go together. So to celebrate the World Day for Safety, let’s think about Innovation and Safety – For me, for you, for all!” - CEO TPPL, Mr. Olivier Sabrie’s video message on the occasion shared to employees via the company intranet.

HSEQ SENSIBILIZATION ACTIVITY | APNA HAI TOTAL

On 25th April 2019, an HSE sensibilization session – including the first ever ‘Safety Gup Shup’ was organized at the Machike Terminal, involving interactive sessions and activities pertaining to safety rules for tank lorry drivers and staff through the sharing of past incidents, videos, a role-playing performance and a fun ‘Game Show Quiz’, along with awarding of gifts.

Unsafe acts & conditions in videos were discussed by TPPL management in detail followed by an informative lesson-sharing session. After this, the stage was all set for a drama/script performance by selected drivers, trained & prepared before the event. The idea was to share and discuss TPPL Safe Driver Commitments and Transport Safety Regulations in an engrossing manner to the drivers. All of the audience highly appreciated the performance, especially considering the actors were from amongst them as well. It was an excellent way to communicate all HSE core principles to the drivers in an effective manner. The actors were also awarded gifts by TPPL Management.

Following this, a Safety Quiz Show – with the catchy name of “Kheelo aur Jeeto” - was conducted for the drivers. The basic premise behind the concept was to highlight and memorize all safety concerns of the event. Gifts & goody bags were distributed to motivate

the drivers towards safety and its advantages. This one-of-a-kind event at the site came to an end with sagacious closing remarks by TPPL management for the audience, followed by lunch and a group photography session for all participants. We expect that this event will have an ever-lasting impact in the minds of the drivers, with the concept of safety truly embedded within them.

QUALITY TESTING UNIT - IMS STAGE 2 AUDITS | APNA HAI TOTAL

‘Transparency Breeds Loyalty’ is a Customer Engagement campaign whereby customers are engaged for a briefing session pertaining to the TPPL Quality and Quantity verification system at our stations. The informative session is conducted through a Mobile Quality Van, during which a video is displayed reflecting the Quality and Quantity inspection process at TPPL retail outlets. In addition to this, live Quality and Quantity checkups are also offered to customers. The campaign is routinely done at selected stations in different regions with the support of respective Retail Sales teams. In accordance with this, on 25th April 2019, a ‘Transparency Breeds Loyalty’ activity was successfully carried out at Orchard Filling station in Islamabad. TPPL employees from Retail Sales, Engineering and HSEQ departments strongly depicted the company’s value of ‘Stand Together’ by working as a cohesive unit to actively participate in the activity. During the customer engagement session, live measurement checking and product quality testing was also completed.

The objective of the activity was to demonstrate TOTAL PARCO’s commitment towards ensuring superior quality and precision in quantity for valued customers at retail stations through effective utilization of Quality Control systems. During this activity, giveaways were also given to customers, along with leaflets outlining details pertaining to Product Quality. Customers truly appreciated this initiative, providing positive feedback and comments about the quality of fuel and services of TPPL team in Islamabad Region.

TPPL is committed to achieving and sustaining operational excellence around all facets of its offering by delivering high quality products and services. The ultimate aim is to cater for customer needs through successful application of high quality standards whilst ensuring environmental protection and occupational health and safety for all relevant stakeholders.

To achieve sustained performance in line with global best practices, TPPL had been maintaining separate HSEQ Management Systems including ISO 9001 Quality Management System, ISO 14001 Environment Management System, OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) and ISSSRS (International Small Site Safety Rating System) at its various facilities. In order to ensure better compliance with local legislative requirements and procedures, continuity of customer satisfaction, reduce duplication of work and increase efficiency, TPPL aimed to integrate all the different HSEQ Management Systems into an Integrated Management System (IMS) to simultaneously satisfy the requirements of all applicable Management Systems.

All our facilities including Keamari Terminal, Karachi; Machike Terminal-I & Machike Terminal-II; Rawalpindi Terminal; Shikarpur Terminal and Lube Oil Blending Plant (LOBP), Karachi have now been successfully recommended for IMS certifications. These certifications will remain valid for three years with yearly compliance audits to ensure continuity of application. IMS Stage-I & Stage-II audits were successfully carried out at Machike Terminal I & II, Rawalpindi Terminal, Shikarpur Terminal & LOBP without any non-conformance. IMS certification has been recommended for each terminal by a third party certification entity. The implementation of IMS is an important milestone for TPPL as it will ensure continuity of reliable operations and delivery of consistent products and services to our customers, while simultaneously ensuring continual improvement across our operations.

The Keamari Terminal was built in 1937 over a land of 13.2 Acres, possessing a total storage capacity of 24,960 MT. It is a flagship location for TOTAL PARCO and serves as one of the primary foundations of the fuels’ supply chain. The facility is the only owned terminal able to receive imported white oils through pipeline connectivity with Karachi Port. Considering Keamari Terminal’s strategic importance and position, the company decided to enhance the storage and filling capacity at the terminal to meet the growing demand and requirements.

The Keamari Terminal expansion project was initiated in early 2017 with an extensive scope including addition of 6000 MT of storage, construction of a 6 bay multi-product loading / unloading gantry, development of new pump rooms and a Fire Fighting system employing the latest standards. All these storage infrastructure initiatives have now been successfully incorporated at Keamari Terminal. It is also more than worth noting that the project was successfully completed with 315,000 safe man-hours, a fact which stands as a testimony to TPPL’s never-ending commitment to one of our primary values – ‘Safety’.

CEO TPPL – Mr. Olivier Sabrie – inaugurated the expansion projects in a ceremony at the Terminal on 19th April, 2019. On the occasion, he shared his thoughts and mentioned that he was absolutely sure that the addition of new gantry and tanks at Keamari Terminal will play a key role in ensuring the significance and strategic importance of this terminal and create new avenues of revenue generation for TPPL in the years to follow.

Congratulations and special commendations go out to the Operations team, specifically the Keamari Terminal team, for not only managing to accomplish a task of this magnitude so efficiently, but also to have executed it with a high degree of technical competence and capability in line with maintaining safety standards whereby safe operations were maintained during the entire timeline – remaining customer facing at all times.

Blessings inTOTAL PARCO

Ramadan

Ramadan gatherings are not only fun, but a way to depict Respect for Each Other - which is one of the core values of TOTAL PARCO. What better way is there to embody the Ramadan spirit than by sitting together with colleagues, and sharing a meal during the Iftar dinner. This year, Iftar dinners were arranged for the TPPL Family in Lahore, Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Islamabad, Shikarpur and Sahiwal. Employees from each respective location joined in and spent quality time with each other. A digital quiz with respect to Ramadan was also held before breaking the fast at Lahore and Karachi, where the employees participated zealously and the top three winners were awarded surprise gift hampers.

Annual Iftar Dinner

Ramadan is a time for worship, self-worth and an opportunity to not only become a better person but to capitalize on the health benefits of the month by taking good care of your body and health. TPPL always provides a balanced and healthy environment for its employees to stay fresh, energetic and motivated. To cater to this, resources for activities such as table tennis and foosball were provided whereby employees not only managed to take a break from their usual routine, but also engaged in healthy and fun activities of team work, bonding with their peers from different departments and strengthening the TPPL family ties.

LEGAL LEARNING - PRINCIPLES OF FORCE MAJEURE | APNA HAI TOTAL

15 | THIRD EDITION - 2019

You might have come across the legal term “Force Majeure” – but what does it actually mean? Generally, contracts impose legally binding obligations on the parties, with a non-performing party being liable to the other in damages. However, the obligation to perform may be excused if a substantial change in circumstances renders performance practically impossible. The term Force Majeure is a French phrase that literally translates to meaning a ‘superior or greater force’, i.e., instances where recognized unforeseeable and irresistible events may prevent a contracting party from performance.

In commercial situations this would be taken to refer to an irresistible compulsion or coercion that has rendered either or both the parties to a contract physically unable to perform their obligations under that contract.

This phrase is particularly used in commercial contracts to describe any event adversely affecting the performance of the contract which is/are completely outside the parties’ control. A more comprehensive attempt at defining force majeure would be a fundamental change in circumstances brought about by an

unforeseen, supervening event not within the control of either party, which would effectively stop a party from performing its contractual obligation.

The main elements that are recognizable in establishing the occurrence of force majeure is that the event or condition itself must have been: (1) Inevitable; (floods, earthquake, fire)(2) Unforeseeable; (economic sanction, embargo)(3) External to the parties (strikes, lock outs, revolution), and (4) Must have made performance an impossibility and not merely more difficult or impracticable. (acts of terrorism, labour dispute, prohibitory government order/orders).

In an initiative to mitigate costs, the Procurement department opted to competitively source its major projects by publishing tender notices on TPPL’s official website, rather than advertising comprehensive requirements in a printed format within newspapers. Now tender notices can be accessed with just a few clicks upon visiting www.totalparco.com.pk! This has also resultantly worked towards increasing the efficiency of our processes, as every web based tender notice has led to saving costs by approximately 77%. Only the announcement of the tenders - with basic information - are published in newspapers now, in order to keep all interested parties apprised, whence they are also provided with the link to our website for further details. The latest tender notices are automatically shown and updated on the main landing page of the website as well, alongside the press releases, for interested parties to participate in. Through this step towards digitalization, TPPL has successfully managed to standardize both the template and procedure of the tendering process - drastically reducing the cost of the activity - and is able to share detailed information pertaining to the tender with all interested parties in a manner which is both efficient and productive.
