Abdul Halim Ihsan A Chartered Accountant, he has held positions as CEO of a Factoring company, Group GM of a listed company, Partner in a Big Four firm and Chairman of a Listed company on the SES. Winner of the School Colors at Raffles Institution he graduated top in his class for the ACCA exams at ITM. He conceptualized, planned, funded and organized the groundwork for this seminal publication recognizing that there is a dearth of information in the Halal pharmaceutical field, together with his long trusted friend and mentor, Prof. Dr. Zhari Ismail of USM. He owes a debt of gratitude for Zhari’s scientific and moral support which has resulted in the publication of the first volume on Pig Based Pharmaceuticals. With a 2 years effort of amassing a huge database of compounds, Halim is hastening to complete a Pig drug book, a Bahasa translation, and is in the varying stages of completing the Plant Based Pharmaceuticals, Blood, Alcohols, Mind Fogging Substances, Animal Derived Compounds, a Halal Food Codex and unraveling the Origins of Synthetic Compounds. Ultimately he hopes to conceive a Halal Pharmacopoeia. He firmly believes that the 1.8 billion Muslim Ummah has the Right to Know and to Choose in accordance with Islamic precepts, a duty to accept Islam in its entirety and to resurrect the Bayt –al- Hikmah. This is Halim’s unequivocal and unwavering Mission Statement.

Filing the void of halal technical & scientific documents

Leading to regulatory documentation and standards The basic documentation on the comprehensive

listing of ingredients used in the halal industry is left much to be desired and lacking.

Such documents are the prime source of reference for manufacturers, formulators, regulators, analysts, scientists and professionals to ascertain the scientific and technical information and data of a particular compounds be it chemicals, drugs or biological.

The unique feature of the halal index is the information based on the origin of the compound and indicating its chemical or biochemical nature and the relevant data to describe.

In order to cross refer to other established databases and to precisely establish its identity, the usual feature like CAS registry number, synonyms and nomenclature, chemical formula, molecular weight, percent composition of it elements, structural formula, description of its appearance, melting and boiling points, solubility in solvents, use and therapeutic category.

The trade name and supplier or manufacturer is also included. The feature on the origin is indispensable for the decision makers to categorically define and determine the status of halal.

Halim Azmi Anna Nish Tony

Azminuddin Ahmad Azmi holds a B. Sc and an MBA from the University of California. As senior editor he had to contend with the difficult task of embarking on a world first publication of its kind. He brings a sense of cohesiveness to the publication and his counsel has been invaluable to the company and its irascible managing editor. Azmi is involved in ensuring that the company stays on its course and implements the strategic blueprint. He is also involved in the research work and finalizes the overall publication. Presently he is steering the company in its market going processes and is in charge of the global distribution for the Halal Index and related publication.

Syaheenaz Abdul Halim With a flair for languages and sciences, she enrolled for her undergraduate at age 16, pursuing a double degree in Medical Bioscience and Biotechnology in Monash, acing high distinctions for all her subjects. At the company she undertakes varied research work on pure science and its application with emphasis on Halal alternatives. She is currently doing a follow up on the pig based pharmaceuticals with new groundbreaking work on animal based compounds and a pig pill book. Anna as she is fondly known, has also completed work on the blood compounds and plant based pharmaceuticals which are pending publications. Syaheenaz other interest is in rDNA and she is applying gene splicing technology with the aim of producing halal recombinant products for the porcine compounds identified, beginning with Amylase.

Nishti Jihan Abd. Adziz A qualified pilot with a Diploma in Translation and Certificates in Arabic and Mandarin, she oversees the operations aspects of The Halal Index. A pioneer member of the team, she initially began research on herbal compounds. Her research work involves the compilation of a 700 pages of known drugs commonly prescribed, which will form the basis of a Halal drug guidebook. She also does research of pharmaceuticals and Porcine in particular, from the Quran and Hadith and selects from a broad range of issues and verses on the Syariah for inclusion in the publication and assists in reviewing the final publication. Nishti is currently editing the Bahasa translation of the Pig Based Pharmaceuticals and is heading the publication of the Halal Food Compounds which is scheduled for completion in August 2011.

Tony Alan Cooper A fine arts graduate from University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, he brings a level of meticulousness to the project. With his strong background in computers, IT and design, he initially wrote a proprietary database program to collect and manipulate over 11,500 compounds which forms the backbone of the company's intellectual domain, segregated according to compounds, therapeutic classes, uses and characteristics. He has just completed an eBook for the publication due for release in April 2011. Tony shares his aesthetic gifts and helps turn a good book into a great one. His ongoing work involves a collaborative platform for the marketing and science people to further increase productivity and in decision making, apart from undertaking information gathering for the company’s use. The internet is indeed a morass for the uninitiated.

As the number of compounds to be determined is extensive, three approaches in selection are done.

Vol. 1 :The red list (haram) that specifically includes all substances derived from the pig.

Vol. 2 :The grey list (masbooh) that includes questionable substances derived from other animals and substance categorised as intoxicants.

Vol. 3 : The green list (halal) as consisting of all commonly used substances not classified into the red and grey lists and considered as halal.

..“ 700 million pigs are slaughtered yearly and 400 million are from China,” says Dr. Linhardt “ and this creates our dependence”.

Essentially 70 percent the supply of heparin is from China. The regulatory control is very lax in China.

Synthetic heparin is very attractive because it is produced in a premise with stringent regulatory control.”
