Our text begs the question—Which is worse? Dirty hands or dirty hearts? 1. Dirty hands (vv. 1-8) – A religion of man’s traditions (v. 8b) 2. Dirty hearts (vv. 14-15, 21-23) – The heart is the source of behavior

The Acolyte Alex Miller + SOLI DEO GLORIA +

In place of the Te Deum, we will be singing hymn #941, ―We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God.‖

We remember our members who are celebrating birthdays this week—Kyle Stevens, Tom Blomenberg, Freddie Geels, Gary Robinson, Danielle Timm, Chris Rhymer, Diego Arriaga, Timi Weiland, Delaney Lawson, Jim Buuck, Alyssa Strickler, Jeramey Hudson, and Marla Manley. We also remember our Wyneken School Board in our prayers, especially those members serving from Friedheim—Mitch Baumann, Randy Hockemeyer, and Scott Hormann—as well as Judy Baumann who is at Southeast Ele-mentary. May our loving Savior direct, bless, and guide their lives.

Congratulations to Jon & Kacey Burden who will celebrate their first wed-ding anniversary this Saturday, August 29. May the Lord continue to rich-ly bless this couple.

May the Great Physician grant health and strength to all who are in need of His healing hand. We especially remember Jim Riemke, Roz Schamer-loh, Marilyn Dafforn (Hollie Hormann‘s mother), Nathan Coffey (Amber Conrad‘s brother), and Connie Darnell (Carol Hitzfield‘s sister).

During this Pentecost season, we will be reviewing the chief parts of Luth-er‘s Small Catechism. Today‘s review is on the Sixth Chief Part of the Catechism—the Sacrament of the Altar. Please turn to pages 327-328 in your Lutheran Service Book.

Today will be our last Children‘s Sermon of the summer. The children who are interested in participating are asked to come to the front of church when Pastor invites them to do so.

Board of Stewardship‘s Food for Thought - Many of us have shared our Christian testimony in a Bible study group or even in a worship service. It is common to share with fellow believers in church. How are we doing in sharing our faith in our homes, in our places of work, or in our neighbor-hoods? The testimonies we give outside the church may be the most po-werful. People are watching to see if we are people of integrity and how we treat others. Through the working of the Holy Spirit, we can be the ambassadors that God wants us to be (2 Corinthians 5:20).

You can watch Worship for Shut-Ins on Sunday mornings at 6:30 a.m. on WPTA-TV Channel 21, at 8 a.m. on Digital 33.2 & Satellite 252 on Sunday mornings, or on Comcast Cable Channel 55 on Sunday and Monday af-ternoons at 4 p.m. They are also now broadcasting via the DIRECTV Channel 377 on Sundays at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time.

If you are unable to come to church, make sure you listen to our live ser-vice on WZBD (92.7 FM) broadcast from 9:05 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. You can also listen to the broadcast over the Internet. Just log on to our website (www.zionfriedheim.org) and click on ―Listen to Zion‘s worship service on WZBD radio from 9:05 - 9:50 a.m. on Sunday mornings.‖ Today‘s broad-cast is in loving memory of Eldora Scheumann.

Listen to the Lutheran Hour, which airs on Sunday on WLW (700) from Cincinnati at 7:00 a.m. and on Van Wert stations WERT (1220) and

Included in this morning‘s bulletin is our weekly study guide, ―Time in the Word.‖ Next week‘s theme is ―Faith in Action.‖

Council Members: The minutes of the August 4 Council Meeting can be found in your slots in either entranceway of the church. The next Council Meeting is on Tuesday, September 1, at 8 p.m. in the church basement.

Sara Rhymer (Mrs. Chris) is August‘s ―Meals of Grace‖ coordinator. Please contact Sara at 547-4408 if you know of someone in need of this ministry of our church.

It looks like our Sunday School teaching staff is complete; however, we still need to know who would be willing to substitute or help in the class-room. Please contact Amy Walker (547-4648), Sara Rhymer (547-4408), or Pastor Dahling as soon as possible. The first day of Sunday School is September 13. (The Sunday School materials are in; teachers may pick up the student packets as well as the teaching tools and helps. The mate-rials can be found in the Parish Hall just outside the church office.)

Don‘t forget that the ladies of the LWML are planning a brunch in the Pa-rish Hall for Rally Day, Sunday, September 13, following the worship ser-vice. Your help is needed. Breakfast rolls, breads, coffee cakes, muffins, etc. are needed for the brunch, help is needed to set up and to prepare the casseroles at 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, serve the brunch on Sunday, or help clean up afterwards. If you are willing to help with any of these tasks, please contact one of our LWML officers—Ann Crosby, Kathy Bultemeier, Cindy Wass, or Evie Fuhrman. Thanks so much.

Do you enjoy crafting? The Morning Glories are back working on items for the fall craft shows. They meet every Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Please come and join them!

Visit Immanuel House for clothing and ―garden extras,‖ which can be found in the garage beside Immanuel House) each Wednesday and Fri-day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Keep Immanuel House in your thoughts when you are cleaning out your closets. Your clean, gently used items can be placed in the box in the Parish Hall near the east door and Joe Gorman will deliver them to Immanuel House. Thank you for your generous sup-port of this ministry.

The Portals of Prayer for the October-December quarter have arrived. You may pick up a copy at your convenience. Copies can be found in either entranceway of the church. You might even consider taking one and dropping it off in the waiting room of your doctor, beautician, at the hospital, or any other place where people may enjoy looking over this de-votional. What an easy way to help spread the Gospel. There are usually a number of extra books available; don‘t hesitate to take a copy for your-self and one to share.

Parents, it‘s that time of the year when you are helping move your son or daughter to college. As you move your child to campus or off-campus housing, could you please contact Pastor Dahling and/or the church office with their address (both e-mail and snail mail)? You can also e-mail that information to us, if it would be easier, to [email protected] or [email protected]. Thanks so much for your assistance.

Just a reminder that articles for the September newsletter need to be in the church office no later than Monday, August 24.

Our men‘s softball team recently completed their season. Congratulations on winning the tournament again this year (the third year in a row).

Don‘t forget that you can go on to our church‘s website (www.zionfriedheim.org) and look over the available dates, topics, and scripture and make your choice for our 2010 Lenten Devotional, The Gos-pel of Mark. Please e-mail Pastor Dahling ([email protected]) with your selection. It will then be marked as ―taken‖ so that it doesn‘t get chosen twice. Your help is so very much appreciated.

The Trustees are taking bids on the rental of the church‘s farm ground. If you have questions or wish to submit a bid (bids are due by August 31), please contact one of our Trustees—Chad Baumann, Corbin Bultemeier, Dale Heckman, or Dennis Schuller. Thanks!

Readings – True Worship

Isaiah 29:11-19 – The Vision of the Lord – For you this whole vision is nothing but words sealed in a scroll. And if you give the scroll to someone who can read, and say to him, ―Read this, please,‖ he will answer, ―I can‘t; it is sealed.‖ Or if you give the scroll to someone who cannot read, and say, ―Read this, please,‖ he will answer, ―I don‘t know how to read.‖ The Lord says: ―These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men. There-fore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.‖ Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the LORD, who do their work in darkness and think, ―Who sees us? Who will know?‖ You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, ―He did not make me‖? Can the pot say of the potter, ―He knows nothing‖? In a very short time, will not Lebanon be turned into a fertile field

and the fertile field seem like a forest? In that day the deaf will hear the words of the scroll, and out of gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind will see. Once more the humble will rejoice in the LORD; the needy will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

P O Lord, have mercy on us. C: Thanks be to God.

Ephesians 5:22-23 – To subject oneself to Christ – Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. P: O Lord, have mercy on us. C: Thanks be to God.

Mark 7:1-13 – Clean and Unclean - The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem ga-thered around Jesus and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were ―unclean,‖ that is, unwashed. (The Phari-sees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles). So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, ―Why don‘t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with ‗unclean‘ hands?‖ He replied, ―Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: ―‗These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.‘ You have let go of the commands of God and are hold-ing on to the traditions of men.‖ And he said to them: ―You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! For Moses said, ‗Honor your father and your mother,‘ and, ‗Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.‘ But you say that if a man says to his father or mother: ‗Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is Corban‘ (that is, a gift devoted to God), then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother. Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.‖ P: O Lord, have mercy on us. C: Thanks be to God.

Time in the Word

24–29 August 2009

Preparation for next week, The 13th

Sunday after Pentecost

The theme for the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost is Faith in

Action. The Pharisees of Christ’s day adhered strictly to the dietary

restrictions laid down by God in His Law. They even extended

them. However, they believed that this strict outward fulfillment

would save them. They gave little thought to the condition of their

hearts, for even as they were outwardly pious in following the let-

ter of the Law, inwardly, they were filthy with sin, hating Christ

and His disciples and even hatching a plan to murder Him.

Jesus tells us that what matters is not the outward act, but the

condition of one’s heart. Now this does not mean that we are free

to act however we will. True faith will always manifest itself in

doing good works, and a desire to adhere to the Word of God.

People will be able to see that we have put our faith in action by

our love for others.

As for the dietary laws of the Jews, we can be thankful that

Christ has fulfilled the Law and has declared all foods clean. We

Book of Concord Reading for the 12th

Sunday after Pentecost

Large Catechism, The Fourth Commandment

[Today’s Gospel contrasts the doctrines of men with the doctrines of God. There is no worship of Christ if we are teaching the doctrines of men. It is prideful ar-rogance to think that any man's teaching is better or more needed than what Chr-ist teaches.]

Learn what is the honor towards parents that this commandment re-

quires. We must serve them, help them, and provide for them when they

are old, sick, infirm, or poor. We must do all this not only gladly, but

with humility and reverence, as doing it before God. For the child who

knows how to regard parents in his heart will not allow them to do with-

out, but will share with them whatever he possesses.

Second, notice how holy a work is assigned to children here. Unfor-

tunately, this is disregarded. No one notices that God has commanded it

or that it is a holy, divine doctrine. For if it had been regarded as holy,

everyone who lives according to these words must be holy people. There

would have been no need to invent monasticism or spiritual orders.

Every child would have said, “If I am to do good and holy works, I know

of none better than to give all honor and obedience to my parents, be-

cause God has Himself commanded it. For what God commands must be

much better and far nobler than everything that we may come up with

ourselves. Since there is no higher or better teacher to be found than

God, there can certainly be no better teaching than what He provides. If,

then, it is God who commands this, I will never improve upon it.” (¶109,

Preparation for next week, The 13th

Sunday after Pentecost

Monday, 24 August 2009—Psalm 51:7, 10–12; Antiphon, Psalm

51:2—Sunday’s Introit is a portion of David’s penitential psalm, the one

he wrote after being confronted with his sin with Bathsheba (2 Sam

11:1—12:14). David evinces true repentance: grief, shame, and contri-

tion over his sin, but also faith and trust in God that he would be re-

deemed of all his iniquity. When we sing this as the Offertory, we make

David’s plea our own: we ask for—and receive—a clean heart, a right

spirit. We have been washed thoroughly from iniquity and cleansed from

all sin by the atoning sacrifice of Christ.

Tuesday, 25 August 2009—Psalm 119:129–136—Psalm 119 is the

longest psalm, and it extols the virtues of delighting in the Word of God.

One who is righteous by faith has a great desire to live according to the

precepts of God’s holy Word. The Word of God gives light and under-

standing; it keeps us from having our iniquity getting dominion over us.

We the redeemed long to live by faith according to the Word; we shed

tears because people do not keep God’s Law.

Wednesday, 26 August 2009—Deuteronomy 4:1–2, 6–9—As the Child-

ren of Israel were about to take possession of the land that the LORD, the

God of your fathers, is giving them, Moses reminds them of all that the

LORD had taught and commanded them. His advice is to them and to us,

heirs through Christ of the spiritual Promised Land, the Kingdom of

Heaven. We must be diligent to hear the Word of God and preserve it,

making it known, not only among ourselves, but to our children and our

children’s children.

Thursday, 27 August 2009—Ephesians 6:10–20—This last reading

from St Paul’s letter to the Ephesians fit exceptionally well with Sun-

day’s other readings. Moses had given his instruction to the Israelites

because he knew how easy it is for people to fall away from God. In

times of both adversity and prosperity, people may be tempted to forsake

the Lord. Attacks will come, for the devil hates God and all whom He

loves. The Christian must gird himself for spiritual warfare with the

weapons which God has provided: truth, righteousness, the Gospel, faith,

salvation—with these, we are equipped for the assaults of the Evil One.

Friday, 28 August 2009—Mark 7:14–23—What defiles a person? Is it

what goes into him? No. We are all defiled by sin. We have inherited our

sinful nature from our first parents, and are inclined toward evil. Jesus

gives a whole laundry list of wicked thoughts and actions which proceed

out of our sinful hearts. We must ever be on guard, not only against the

attacks of Satan, as in the epistle lesson, but even on the treachery of our

own hearts. We must not depart from the Word of God, but read, hear,

and learn it daily to know of both our salvation and of the will of God.

Saturday, 29 August 2009—Sunday’s hymn of the day, Be Strong in

the Lord (LSB 665) exhorts us to make full use of the armor of God, that

we may withstand the wiles of the devil and our sinful nature. Having

been equipped by our Lord, we can be certain of the victory.

Collect for Pentecost 13—O God, the source of all that is just and good,

nourish in us every virtue and bring to completion every good intent that

we may grow in grace and bring forth the fruit of good works; through

Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the

Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Prayer before confession and absolution: Almighty, everlasting

God, for our many sins we justly deserve eternal condemnation. In

Your mercy You sent Your dear Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who

won for us forgiveness of sins and everlasting salvation. Grant us a

true confession that, dead to sin, we may be raised up by Your life-

giving absolution. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may be ever

watchful and live true and godly lives in Your service; through Je-

sus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for teaching the faith: Almighty God, our heavenly Fa-

ther, even as You have committed the care and nurture of children

to Your people, graciously enlighten those who teach and those

who are committed to their instruction that they may know Your

eternal truth and trust in You all the days of their lives; through

Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for steadfast faith: Almighty God, our heavenly Father,

because of Your tender love toward us sinners You have given us

Your Son that, believing in Him, we might have everlasting life.

Continue to grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may remain stead-

fast in this faith to the end and finally come to life everlasting;

through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for aid against temptation: O God, You justify the un-

godly and desire not the death of the sinner. Graciously assist us by

Your heavenly aid and evermore shield us with Your protection,

that no temptation may separate us from Your love in Christ Jesus,

our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for spiritual renewal: Almighty God, grant that we, who

have been redeemed from the old life of sin by our Baptism into

the death and resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, may be re-

newed by Your Holy Spirit to live in righteousness and true holi-

ness; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for deliverance from sin: Almighty God, our heavenly

Father, You desire not the death of a sinner, but rather that we turn

from our evil ways and live. Graciously spare us those punish-

ments which we by our sins have deserved, and grant us always to

serve You in holiness and pureness of living; through Jesus Christ,

Your Son, our Lord. Amen.
