General Information Dancesport examinations coverModern Ballroom, Latin American, Sequence, Disco Freestyle, andStreetDance,Rock‘n ’Roll,Country/WesternandAlternativeRhythms.Thesedancegenresprovideawidediversityinbothteachingandlearningindanceeducation.Ononeleveltheyformthebasisofwhatmaysometimesbereferredtoas 'social’ dancing,andtherearearangeofexaminationsthatprovide those learning to dance as a recreational activity the scope to develop quality withinperformance. Examination Entry – Amateur Medal Tests

1. TeachersenteringcandidatesforISTDexaminationsinDancesportshouldholdtheappropriateISTD teaching qualifications. Further information can be obtained either from the UKExaminationsDepartmentorInternationalLiaisonOfficerasappropriate.

2. Application forms for UK examination sessions are available to download from the ISTDwebsite at www.istd.org/examinations/ukexaminations and once completed should bereceivedatheadquartersatleastfourweekspriortothedaterequired.

3. For new candidates requiring PINS, the application form is available to download from the

HelpsectiononQuest.4. Thecompleted timetableshouldbe receivedatheadquartersat least twoweeksbefore the

examinationdate.

5. Theremustbeanintervalofatleast3monthsfromthedateoftheoriginalexaminationifthecandidatewishestoretakeitforanyreason.

Amateur Medal Tests Introduction MedalTestsandAwardsinAlternativeRhythmsaredesignedtobeaccessibletoanyagegroupandseekto:

• Promote an appreciation and enjoyment of the Alternative Rhythms styles, with a view todevelopingtechnicalandartisticqualities

• Introduceanunderstandingofthevariousstyleswithinthegenreandthedifferentrhythmicexpressions/characterizations

• Motivatecandidatesandbuildself-confidencebyprovidingcarefullystagedgoals• Provideastructuredapproachforteacherstomeasuretheprogressofindividualpupils

Medal Tests andAwardsbuildupprogressively, ensuring that steps and skills learnedat the lowerlevelsprepareformorecomplexandhigherqualitymovementsasthecandidatemakesprogress.TheintroductorytestsstartatUnder6andgothroughtoPre-Bronze.TheMedalseriesthenprogressesfromBronzethroughtoGold.CandidateswhoaresuccessfulatGoldcancontinuetotakeGoldStars1,2and3,theImperialDanceAwards1,2and3andtheSupremeAward.TheAnnualAwardallowsSupremeAwardholderstomaintaintheirstandard.OneDanceTestsareavailableatall levelsfromSocialDanceTesttotheAnnualAward.WithAlternativeRhythmscoveringsomanydifferentdancestylesitispossibletousetheFullMedalSeriesusing2ormoredifferentdancesortouseasingledancefortheOneDanceTestMedalSeries.ForexampleacandidatewhoislearningbothSalsaandArgentineTangocanchoosetotakethefull

medals using both of these dances within the same examination. However, if a candidate is onlylearningLASalsa the full rangeofmedalsareavailableasOneDanceTests fromSocialDanceTestonwards.ItshouldbenotedthattheAlternativeRhythmsadditionaldancescanonlybeuseduptoandincludingPre-BronzeDanceTest.AnoutlineofthedifferentlevelsisgivenbelowandfurtherdetailisgivenintheSyllabusContent.

Studentdivisionforcandidatesof16yearsofage**Students that are studying to become professional teachers should enter this category.Requirements are as for Adult division, but a slightly higher standard of dancing is expected. Aprofessional qualified in another Dancesport or Theatre genre may take Student division tests.StudentTeachersmaycontinuetotakeStudentdivisiontestsinthesamegenre.Categories Candidateshavethefollowingoptionswhenenteringforamateurmedaltests:1. SoloEntry2. CouplesTests3. TeamTests4. DancingOppositeRole(thisoptioncanbecombinedwithanyoftheaboveoptions)Solo Entry Eachcandidateisassessedindividually.Couples Tests The partnership is assessed as a couple but two report forms are issued. Both dancers receive acertificate and award. Candidates need not have taken the appropriate test individually. WhenenteringCouplesmedaltestsonthetimetable,teachersshouldclick‘C’forCoupleasappropriate.Team Medal Tests Testsforteamsof6-16dancers inanyagedivisionmaybetakenatanylevelcommencingatSocialDanceTest. It isnotnecessarythateachteammemberholdanindividualmedalattheappropriatelevel.Thedresswornbytheteamneednotbeuniform,althoughthisisdesirable.FurtherguidancetosyllabuscontentandproceduresforTeamsisgivenonpage9.Whenenteringteamsonthetimetable,teachersshouldclick‘T’forTeamasappropriate. Dancing Opposite Role Candidateswishing to take these testsmay dance in the opposite role to that which they usuallydance,forexampleaFollowermayapplytotakethetestperformingtheLeaderssteps.Theteachershouldclick‘O’forOppositeRoleasappropriatewhenenteringcandidatesforthisexam.Prior Learning Noprior learning is requiredfor the IntroductoryTests.For theMedalSeries, testsmustbepassedsequentially from Bronze to Gold Star 3. Candidatesmust be successful in the GoldMedal beforeentering for the Gold Stars. For the Imperial Dance Award and Supreme Award they must haveachievedGoldStar3 level.CandidateswhohavegainedtheSupremeAwardmayenter theAnnualAward.CandidateswhoholdtheBronzeMedalorhigherofanotherteachingorganizationrecognizedbytheBritishDanceCouncilmaycommencewiththeISTDSilverMedal.

Musical Accompaniment Teacherswillprovidetheirownmusicalequipmenttogetherwitharangeofappropriatemusic.Recording The filming, streaming, uploading and use of photographs from any ISTD examinations by any means, is strictly prohibited. Dress Requirements Candidatesshouldbewellgroomedandappropriatelydressedfordancing.Reasonable Adjustments Adjustmentsmaybemade to the examination conditionswhere candidates have particular needs.FurtherdetailsaregivenonPage28.

Syllabus Content for Amateur Medals and Awards Introductory Tests Imperial Dancesport Facult ies Full Medal In theUnder 6,Under 8, SocialDance andPre-Bronze Tests, dances fromdifferent genresmaybeusede.g.acandidatemightchoosetodanceLASalsawithJive(LatinAmerican)orDisco/Freestyle,orWaltz(Ballroom).Whenenteringmixedgenres,theteachershouldenterthetestsas ‘IDF ’(ImperialDancesportFaculties)onthetimetable. Under 6 and Under 8 Dance Tests 1, 2, 3, 4 These tests are designed to encourage very young pupils and to act as an introduction to theexamination system. Two dances within the AR genre should be shown. There is no technicalrequirementandparts2,3and4donotrequireahigherstandardofdancingthanpart1.Suitablefiguresandthebeginningsoftimingawarenessshouldbeencouraged.Social Dance Tests 1, 2, 3, 4 Theseareintroductorytestsatasociallevel,whichmaybetakenbycandidatesofanyagegroup.Twodanceswithin theAR genre should be shown in each test. Technical accuracy is not expected andparts2,3and4donot requireahigher standardofdancing thanpart1.Keeping in timewith themusicisofprimaryimportance.Pre-Bronze Dance Tests 1, 2, 3, 4 Thesetestsmaybetakenbycandidatesofanyagegroupinanydancefromtheapprovedlist,andthedancingshouldshowthebeginningsoftechnicalawareness.Parts2,3and4donotrequireahigherstandardofdancingthanpart1.TwodanceswithintheARgenreshouldbeshownineachtestbothusingfiguresfromthePre-Bronzesyllabus. Alternative Rhythms Medal Series (Bronze 1, Bronze 2, Silver, Gold) Tests must be passed sequentially from Bronze to Gold. (Bronze 2 is an optional examination)CandidatesmayenterforboththeBronze1andor2andSilvermedalsatthesamesession,buteachhighertestmustbetakenataseparatesession.CandidatestakethisoptionattheirownriskastheSilver resultwillbecomevoid if theBronze result isunsuccessful.Candidatesmoving fromoneagedivisiontothenext(seepage3)mayeithercommenceatBronzeorSilverlevelormaycontinuetheirmedalsinrotatione.g.JuvenileGoldtoJuniorGoldStaretc.In order to use theMedal Test system to its best advantage, candidates should be encouraged toshoweachdanceatevery levelbeforemovingontoahigherexaminatione.g.acandidate learningArgentine Tango, Salsa andMambo should take a BronzeMedalwith 2 dances and a BronzeOneDancetestforthethirddancebeforemovingontoaSilverMedal.Bronze 1 & 2 TheBronzemedalexaminationisatechnicalexaminationandcandidatesshouldbeshowingtechnicalaccuracywithinthetwodemonstrateddances.Footplacementandrhythmicactionisoftheupmost

importanceandcandidatesshouldbeshowingagoodawarenessofcorrectposture,weightcarriageanddevelopingtheindividualcharacterizationofeachdanceshown.Silver TheSilvermedalexaminationcontinuesthedevelopmentfromtheBronzeMedalandahigherleveloftechnicalaccuracyshouldbedemonstratedwithagoodlevelofperformanceandpresentationshown.TheSilvermedalexaminationconsistsofthreedances. Gold TheGoldmedalexaminationcompletesthecandidate’sfundamentaltrainingandallthefoundationsoftechnicalaccuracy,performanceandpresentationshouldbeevidentthroughouteachofthefourdancesdemonstrated. Supplementary and Higher Awards Gold Star 1, 2, 3 A high standard of technical accuracy, style and rhythmic expression is expected at this level. Thedancing throughout theGold Stars and Imperial DanceAwards should show a gradual progressiontowardstheultimategoalofSupremeAward.Theremustbeanintervalofatleast6monthsbetweenGoldStars(3monthsforunder16s).Withinthefirsttwentysecondsofeachroutine,threesyllabusfiguresshouldbedanced.Requirementsasfollows:GoldStar1,3Bronzesyllabusfigures.GoldStar2,3SilversyllabusfiguresGoldStar3,3GoldsyllabusfiguresTheGoldStarAwardconsistsof5dancesImperial Dance Award 1, 2, 3 (supplementary) TheseareoptionalawardsthatfollowonfromGoldStar3.TherequiredintervalbetweentestsareasforGoldStar.TheImperialDanceAwardconsistsof5dancesSupreme Award This is the highest award in Alternative Rhythms and an appropriately high standard of technicalaccuracy,styleandrhythmicexpressionisexpected.TheSupremeAwardconsistsof5dancesAnnual Award (supplementary) ThisawardistoencouragecandidatestomaintaintheirstandardofdancingatSupremeAwardlevelandmaybetakentwiceayear.One Dance Tests Thesetestsrequirethesamestandardastherelevantfullmedali.e.SocialOneDanceTestorBronzeOneDance Test andmay be taken in any of the Alternative Rhythms styles. Theymay be used inconjunctionwiththefullmedalsorsolely ifonlyonedance isbeing learnt forexaminations. IfonlyusingtheOneDanceTeststhesamerulesasthefullmedalswillapply,pleaseseeabove.

Entry Thenamesoftheindividualteammembersshouldbelistedonthetimetable.Teamsenterintheagedivisionoftheoldestteammember.Pleaseclick ‘T’againsteachnameintheappropriateboxonthetimetableandaddtheteamname.Awards Onlyonereportformwillbeissuedhoweveramedalandcertificateisawardedtoeachmemberofthesuccessful team.A teamtrophymaybe requestedby the teacheronpaymentofanadditionalfee.Specif ied Figures for Amateur Medals and Tests The specified figures are listed in numerical order on pages 30-35. Teachersmay choose from thefigureslistedfortheappropriatelevel.Itisnotnecessarytouseallthefigures,butforSilverandGoldat least2-3figures listedforthelevelshouldbeshownaswellfiguresfromtheprevious levels.ForPre-Bronze,Bronze,SilverandGoldtestsnofiguresapartfromthoselistedmaybedanced. Method of Assessment/Mark Scheme for Amateur Medals and Tests All Amateur Medal Tests are assessed by the examiner as below. Eachdancemustbepassedat65%inorderfortheexaminationtobesuccessfuloverall.Maximummarksallocatedforeachdanceis100.Themarksforeachdancearethenaggregatedandtheoverallresultisindicatedasapercentageasfollows:

OriginatingfromthecountrysideandruralareasoftheDominicanRepublicTimeSignature-4Tempo-90–200beatsperminute4Music–Traditionallyplayedonguitarandpercussioninstrumentsat90bpmwithasmoothromanticfeel and influenced by Rumba and Son. The vocalistwould often sing about the blues. Today it iscommonlydancedat130bpm.Bachatahasavarietyofdifferent rhythms includingMerengueandBolero.Usuallyinphrasesof8beats.Characteristics–Apartnerdance inacloseoropen framewithvery fewturnpatterns. Stepsandbreaks are influenced by the music and its phrasing. Knees should be slightly flexed. Originating from theAfricanAmericanpeopleof Charleston in SouthCarolina in the1900’s.Madepopularinthe1923movie“Runnin’Wild”tothesong“TheCharleston”byJamesPJohnson.ReachingEuropeinthe1920’shavingbeeninfluencedbytheBlackBottomdance.TimeSignature2Tempo–120-160beatsperminute2Music–Originallydancedto4RagtimeJazzmusicofaveryquickpace.4Thisshouldbelivelyandupbeat.Charlestonmusicisoftenstructuredin4barphraseswithabreakormiddleeightsection.Characteristics–Thekneesarekeptclosetogetherandflickswiththelowerlegaresideways(i.e.Llegraising to Lhip). There isa swivelingactionon the supporting foot, theheelmoving inon theoddnumberbeat (i.e.1357).Basic stepsaredancedoneachbeatof thebar.Other rhythmsmaybeused.Does not travel. Reasonable Adjustments Candidates Who May Require Adjustments to the Assessment TheISTDiscommittedtopromotinganenvironmentwhereallindividualsareencouragedtoachievetheir full potential anddevelop their skills, encouraging its teachers tomaintain anopenapproachtowardsthedifferenttalentsandabilitiesofferedbyalltheirstudents.Itis,therefore,requiredofallISTDteachingmembersthattheydonotdiscriminate,eitherdirectlyorindirectly,onthegroundsofcolour,race,nationality,ethnicorigin,gender,mentalorphysicaldisability,maritalstatusorsexuality,and pupils with disabilities should not be treated less ormore favourably than able-bodied pupilssimplybecauseoftheirdisability.Disabilitytakestheformofmentalorphysicalimpairmentsorboth,andmaybelongorshortterm.The ISTD recognizes that some students with a mental or physical impairment may need specialadjustmentstoassessmentconditionstoallowthemtodemonstratetheirknowledgeindance.Theprocedure should beused in all cases, every time the candidate enters for an examination, as theconditions,andnecessaryadjustments,maychange.Ifateacherwishestoentersuchapupilforanexamination,theISTDwouldliketomakeitclearthatalthoughpupilswithmental or physical impairmentsmay require extra time in anexamination, orspecial aids (e.g. special headphones if the pupil is deaf) in order to perform to the best of theirability,thequalityof theperformance inanexamination is tobeequal to thatofanable-bodiedcandidate. Results and Certi f ication AllISTDexaminationsaresingleperformancesatonemomentintime,withadetailedmarkingsystemawardedaccordingtotheassessmentcriteriaandattainmentdescriptorsgivenforeachexamination.Examiners complete the results as soon as possible after the examination. These are individuallycheckedwithintheQualityAssurancedepartmentforadministrativeaccuracy.Allresultsareentered,andcheckedforachievingtheminimumpasslevels,andcorrectlevelsofattainmentagainstthetotalmark achieved. Under normal circumstances the resultswill be available to the teacherwithin 10working days of the examination for UK examinations. Any errors found are corrected by theexaminer prior to further processing of thewhole examination session, andmay therefore extendthesetimings,althoughthedepartmentwillmakeeveryefforttoprocesstheseasrapidlyaspossible.Once the results havebeen cleared for issue, the report sheets should be receivedby the teacherwithin21daysandthecertificateswithin6to8weeksoftheexamination.The ISTD is an approved awarding body and, as such, adheres to the criteria laid down for theregulation of its qualifications by the Regulatory Authorities, the Office of Qualifications andExaminations Regulation (Ofqual) for England and Northern Ireland, and the Welsh AssemblyGovernment for Wales. Teachers in other countries should note that while the ISTD and all ISTDregulated examinations must meet these criteria, the Regulatory Authorities themselves have noremitoutsideEngland,WalesandNorthernIreland.
