To my family, friends, and fellow residents of Orleans County:
We have a big decision to make on June 25, and then again on November 5. I have known Chris Bourke for over twenty years, and I can tell you there is no person more qualified to be Sheriff of our county than Undersheriff Bourke! His training, experiences, and actions as a member of the Orleans County Sheriff’s department are exceptional. Chris understands the unique challenges facing Orleans County. We want our next Sheriff to understand completely, on day one, how to navigate the budgetary, personnel, and operational difficulties which will confront him. Chris is the right person for this job at this time! We cannot afford to elect an outsider who does not understand the financial difficulties we face as a rural county. If you are a registered Republican please vote for Chris Bourke in the primary on June 25, and again in the general election on November 5, 2019!
Let’s keep Orleans County safe and sound!- Jim Salmon

111 USE A KEY WORD. This immediately tells the reader exactly what you have to sell.
Make your description CLEAR AND FACTUAL. State the year, make, model, color & size and tell what condition the item is in. Also, state the special features.
STATE THE PRICE. Successful classified advertisers have learned that the price in an ad helps increase the chances for results.
IF THERE IS A GENUINE SENSE OF URGENCY, say so. The words “We’re moving,” or “Must sell fast,” suggest that readers respond immediately.
INCLUDE YOUR PHONE NUMBER. Classifieds get results fast and often generate immediate sales. If you cannot be available to answer the phone at all times, be sure to specify special calling times such as “after 9pm” or “before 11am.”

Science Teacher at BOCES Shares Passion for SCUBA Diving
Orleans/Niagara BOCES Science teacher, Peter Jablonski, tries to keep his lessons interesting to capture the attention of the students at the Orleans Career and Technical Education Center. He decided to use his love of SCUBA diving when he was teaching the Welding program and the Security and Law Enforcement classes this year. “Welders can make a lot of money if they know how to weld underwater, so that was added incentive for them to pay attention,” says Mr. Jablonski. “I told the students that SCUBA diving in extreme depths, fast water, and poor visibility is dangerous work therefore workers are highly compensated. Jablonski learned SCUBA when he had to take a mandatory two credit hours of physical education when he was an undergrad at Canisius College. He ended up enjoying it because it was physically demanding and helped him to overcome his fear of the water. “There is a lot of science involved for SCUBA,” explains Jablonski. “You need to know how to use Navy dive charts to see how long a person could stay underwater at different depths, Boyle’s Gas Laws, physiological diseases such as embolisms, bends and nitrogen narcosis or rapture of the deep. Also the physics of how light and sound travels underwater had to be thoroughly comprehended. Sound travels much faster underwater and objects appear closer underwater due to refraction.” He also shared this lesson with the Security and Law Enforcement students, who may have to conduct a water rescue in their careers. “During my lesson the students have a good laugh watching one of their classmates, Matthew Schultz, don a wet suit and try to walk around with an air tank on their back and a weight belt around their waist.” Knowing that many of the Security and Law Enforcement students will never even try SCUBA, he tries to include practical law enforcement skills like rescuing a drowning victim. He shared the slogan “REACH-THROW-ROW-GO” that was instilled in him as a Boy Scout and what he teaches as a guide to Boy Scouts on high adventure canoe trips in Algonquin Provincial Park in northern Ontario. “I discussed with the students the incredible strength of moving water, how to perform ice rescues and how extreme cold water can cause death by Sudden Cold Water Immersion.” Mr. Jablonski said he was pleased on how his lessons went. “I think discussing the science in this manner will stick with them longer and help them apply that knowledge in their lives. You never know it could help one of them to save someone else’s life so that is a great lesson to learn.”

To become a notary, you must be at least 18 years of age and either reside in New York or engage in business in the state.GCC Batavia Campus • Fee $691 session (4 hours)Friday, July 19 • 12:30-4:30 pm
HACCP Certification - Intro LevelThis two-day introductory Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification training allows attendees to gain a practical understanding of pre-requisite programs, regulatory requirements and implementation of a HACCP system using a hands-on approach. This training is a foundation for FDA-regulated seafood and juice production as well as USDA regulated meat and poultry production. This training is also a great foundation for GFSI based audits. This training is approved by the International HACCP Alliance and upon successful completion of the training and assessment test, a certification will be awarded. With this HACCP training certificate and proven experience working in the food industry, the opportunity exists to receive three credits for the FPT102 course at GCC at a reduced cost with successful completion (certification) of this course and qualified prior learning experience. A passing score on an open book assessment test will ensure the attendee has proven that they have attained and comprehended the proper training. Who should attend? This two-day course is for, but not limited to food-processing HACCP team members, senior management, auditing personnel, sanitation associates, quality personnel and warehouse associates. Although not a pre-requisite for the training, a basic knowledge of food safety is recommended.Key Outcomes:After this training, an attendee should be able to:1. Demonstrate practical understanding of pre-requisite programs.2. Compare and contrast the causes of food-borne illnesses.3. Define the rules and regulations that are required for safe manufacture and sale of food products.4. Develop and summarize a food safety (HACCP) plan.5. Outline the steps in preparation for FDA, USDA, NYSDAM or third-party audits.GCC Batavia CampusFee: $615 (Includes all materials, test and lunch each day)Wednesday & Thursday, June 19 & 20 • 8:00 am-5:00 pm

How Common is Carpal Tunnel?
Increased hours spent on computer keyboards and digital devices can put people at risk for a relatively common and oftentimes painful condition that affects mobility in the wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome, or CTS, can cause numbness, pain and tingling in the hand or arm as a result of one of the major nerves of the hand - the median nerve - being compressed in the wrist.
What is the carpal tunnel? The carpal tunnel is a passage that forms in the wrist on the palm side of the hand. It is located just beneath the skin surface. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says the carpal tunnel is a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bones. Eight small wrist bones form three sides of the tunnel. The width of the tunnel is only about an inch. Injury or inflammation to the tissues inside of the carpal tunnel can shrink the space of the tunnel, eventually pressing on the tendons and the median nerve that runs through this narrow area.
The role of the median nerveWhen compression occurs in this area of the wrist, a key nerve is affected. The median nerve originates in the neck and runs through the arm. The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel at the wrist and goes into the hand, providing feeling to the palm side of the thumb and to the index, middle and part of the ring fingers (although not the little finger). It also controls some small muscles at the base of the thumb.
Symptoms of carpal tunnelWeakness of the hand as well as tingling and numbness are the two most common symptoms of CTS. The numbness particularly affects four of the fingers. It can occur when holding a phone, book, newspaper or steering wheel or engaging in just about any activity that involves the hands. CTS also may wake a person up from sleep.
There are a number of other compression issues that can occur in the hand and arms, causing similar pain and tingling in other areas. Ulnar nerve compression in the elbow can cause part of the ring finger and pinky finger to tingle and may be indicative of a different ailment. That’s why a professional diagnosis must be sought when experiencing symptoms related to CTS.
When to see a doctorIf pain and tingling are affecting activities and sleeping patterns, individuals should see their doctors. Various nonsurgical remedies and therapies may help. If left untreated, any condition that affects nerve function may lead to permanent nerve and muscle damage. n

NONDISCLOSURE AGREEMENTS
(585) 798-1000 534 Main St., Suite 6
Medina, NY 14103
HINT: The time period for which a nondisclosure agreement will remain in effect is usually negotiable.
“The Right Lawyer Matters.”
In light of recent mention of “nondisclosure agreements” (NDAs) in the media, it may prove instructive to point out that these “confidentiality agreements,” as they are also known, are fairly common in business settings as a means of keeping trade secrets and other confidential information private. Also called a “proprietary information agreement” (PIA) or a “secrecy agreement” (SA), this legally enforceable contract creates a confidential relationship between a person who holds a trade secret (such as plans for a new product, client information, sales and marketing plans, or a unique manufacturing process), and a person to whom the secret will be disclosed. NDAs provide the best possible way of keeping confidential information protected in a number of situations.
NDAs are used in essentially every industry. They are particularly common in the technology industry, particularly for Internet and computer companies. If you have an NDA with someone who discloses your secret without authorization, you can ask a court to order the violator to stop making any further disclosures. To schedule a free consultation, please call the Law Office of MACK & PACE at (585)798-1000. We emphasize small business, mortgages and foreclosures, living wills and trusts, powers of attorney, probate and estate law, and vehicle and traffic law.

ROUGH COUPLE OF DAYS
BUT IT WORKS OUT By Douglas H. Domedion
I keep close tabs on the eagle nests in this area and knowing the Ringneck Marsh eaglets on the INWR would be leaving the nest this week the decision was made to spend some time over there with hopes of photographing them on their first solos. When I got over there late Monday afternoon Debbie, a fellow nature photographer, informed me that one of the eaglets had tumbled from the nest and fell in the water. It then had swam it’s way over to the near by island and was resting on the shore. The eaglets are 10 weeks old, about the time they start taking their first flights. As they reach this age they begin to “walk” some of the nearby branches from the nest and exercise their wings and learn balance. This nest is in a dead snag that really doesn’t have any limbs for these birds to “practice” on so I suspect that the eaglet that fell just lost his balance near the edge of the nest and without any previous flying or balancing experience just couldn’t recover and hit the water. After everyone at the overlook left, I hiked down the dike to wait. The eaglet still in the nest seemed like he was thinking about taking a solo flight and sure enough after about an hour and half he leaped into the air and took his first flight! Struggling and looking not too graceful, he headed for the island and he ended up crashing into a big maple tree there. At first it was hard to find him in the maze of leaves, but eventually his spread wings gave away the location. He appeared to be hanging onto a limb upside down, but finally got organized and got up right. The mother eagle was around, but didn’t seem to concerned about what was going on with her young. It was now getting pretty late with light conditions quickly deteriorating and I left. Early the next morning found me on the east side of the the island where I could use the rising sun to help me locate the eaglets. The one that had tumbled out of the nest was still on the shore, but had gotten up on a elevated log and through the spotting scope looked in good shape and dry. In fact, he was flapping his wings. The other bird was spotted perched in the same maple tree he had flown to the night before. One adult eagle was on the nest eating and a little later the other adult showed up and was pecking at something he had brought in. What about the kids? The day before there was concern by the INWR biologist that the “tumbler” would have to be “rescued” if the adults didn’t begin feeding it. However the eaglets were able to fly and mom and dad were trying to encourage them to fly back up to the nest for some chow. I felt nature would take it’s course and eventually the one in the maple tree took another solo around the back side of the island and landing in another tree. Maybe this inspired the one on the shore because a little later he took off headed for the nest as his mother waited there. He didn’t gain enough altitude and ended up clasping the nest tree just below the nest. After a rest he took off again and headed for a nearby snag which he just managed to get perched on. There he sat thinking it all over with grackles and other blackbirds harassing him. I had to leave, but eventually made it back to the area and by then the other eaglet had made it back to the nest also. Both were taking naps, obviously tired out from the the ordeal the day before and that day. Wednesday morning they were checked again and both were up and alert on the nest with mom perched near by to keep an eye on things. Later I swung by and one had left the nest and was perched in a tree on the island again. So it was a rough couple of days for the new eaglets but everything worked out and we will soon have another pair of eagles soaring the skies over the swamp! These eaglets will fly to and from their “home” for a week or so as the adults bring food back to the nest for them to feed on so if you haven’t had a chance to see our new eagles there is still time, but you may have to get lucky to catch them “home!” Our other eagle nests that are producing this year in this area will also be seeing their eaglets taking their first flights shortly. As a reminder federal law says you must stay back 200 yards from an active eagle nest as not to disturb the nesting season. Failure to do so could get you a heavy fine or cause a nest failure. Today everyone is running around with a camera or smartphone wanting to get “that” picture. Many of these folks don’t really understand what is going on out there and mean no harm but can unintentionally cause problems for nesting birds. Think folks! My contact information is 585-798-4022 or [email protected].

• Working with GCASA, instituted the “STAMP” ( Sheriff’s Transition Management Program) in the County Jail. This is part of an intensive program of comprehensive treatment which includes Vivitrol, that helps inmates that are willing to participate combat their addiction . • Expanded the “MAT” ( Medicated Assisted Treatment”) program in the County Jail. This program helps in the management of incarcerated people suffering from addiction which results in a more safe and secure facility. • Instituted the “Sheriff CARES” program. This program has incorporated GCASA, OASAS, Mental Health, Faith Based
Services and the Sheriff’s Volunteer Clergy Members, to combat the opioid crisis• Together with Genesee County and GCASA, we received the NYS OASAS “Access Matters Grant” . This grant allowed our jail to renovate a small area for a “CASAC” (Certified Substance Abuse Clinician Counselor ) 2.5 days a week and a “Peer Counselor” 2.5 days per week.• Trained Deputy Sheriff’s in the use of NARCAN• Recently obtained new high tech investigative equipment and training from the D.E.A. ( Federal Drug Enforcement Administration) for the Sheriff’s Office to assist in our
investigations into the opioid crisis and other crimes.• We have Expanded our working relationship with ICE (Immigration Custom Enforcement) and now have a Federal ICE Agent assigned at the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office three days a week. • We have expanded our working relationship with the D.E.A. • We have Expanded our working relationship the New York State Police Drug Enforcement Division (CNET)• As always, we continue to work with all local agencies to combat the sale and distribution of drugs in Orleans County.
The safety and security of our Orleans County residents is my number one priority. The Sheriff’s Office ,along with our law enforcement partners, will continue to investigate, arrest and lock up drug dealers that are poisoning our community. At the same time the Sheriff’s office must do our part to offer a path to services that help addicts recover and help families avoid the pain and suffering that are effecting so many. I believe that in the long run, this two prong approach will ultimately save tax payer money and more importantly, save lives.

Victoria C.I couldn’t have asked for a better car buying experience. My salesman, Larry Bruning, was top notch. He was really there to listen to me, explain all the options and not talk down to me. Everyone that I worked with at Orleans Ford was super nice. I would 100% recommend them to anyone looking to buy a new vehicle!!
Mike D. First time buying from Orleans Ford was a positive experience all the way around! The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful and I even had the opportunity to meet the owner. I would defi nitely go back when ready to buy again!!
Amy V.They are always friendly and helpful. The work was done a day earlier than expected. I am always happy with the service I receive. I had a question unrelated to my Ford Escape and the service manager went above and beyond to try and help me out.
Mark R.Salesman Aaron was great and explained everything about the car I was looking at. After a week or so driving the (used 2017 Fusion Sport) car I noticed a few small issues with it and Jamie in service took care of all my concerns. Will defi nitely go back to them for our next vehicle.
