PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE ISSUE 2 DEC 2015-2016 | FOR MEMBERS ONLY EDITOR’S NOTE Dear Members, This is the last issue of the Varnakairali for the year. As we bid goodbye to 2015 and welcome 2016 it is the time to reflect, review and plan for the coming year. SFTMA was officially registered in 1952 and since then has been chugging along sometimes gallantly and sometimes gingerly. As the world and the country enters the next Industrial Revolution, sometimes referred to as the Internet of Things, here in Malaysia, 1MDB and the depreciating currency took centre stage. The Malayalee Community also witnessed “The Gobal Malayalee 2015” organized by AMMA. For SFTMA, the last quarter witnessed the arrival of Onam in grand style. An Onam Sadhya and an Onam nite showcased the Malayalee in us. In fact the Onam nite was an event par excellence with the usual SFTMA stamp all over it. For the many, Onam is the yearly visit of Mahabali but for most in Kerala, Onam is considered a Malayalee New Year with the birth of Chingam and the harvest of a bountiful crop. It is the time for celebration and joy. As we bid good bye to 2015, we must remember the people who were the driving force behind the Executive Committee. In this connection I must thank our patrons Datuk Dr. Ir M.S. Pillai, Tan Sri Ravindran Menon and Mr. G. Satheesan. To my ever eager and able Committee members, I extend my humble pranams for without their cooperation and hard work, none would have been realized. Last but not least, is the worrying return of mails sent to members. Many have moved houses but failed to inform SFTMA of their address change. In this connection, we are publishing a list of such members in this issue and for those who know them, kindly contact them and revert to SFTMA as soon as possible. May the year 2016 bring us peace and happiness. To our Christian friends, “Merry Christmas” and a Happy New Year to all our members and friends. Yours sincerely, Ravindranath G Menon President, SFTMA Merry Christmas The SFTMA Committee would like to inform, that members of the Association, their family and friends may place advertisement of their business in the Varnakairali. CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

by Very Revd Cor Episcopa Philip ThomasVicar, Orthodox Syrian Church in Malaysia

The Nativity of Jesus Christ isproclaimed by angelic choirs in the heights of heaven, and the joyous news is echoed afterwards by modest Shepherds in the fields nearBethlehem. Meanwhile, a mother and father care for their newborn child. No place for this family could be found in the inn, so they shelter among livestock. The circumstances

are strikingly humble, yet their infant is the occasion of the angels’ song: And suddenly there was with the angel of multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven and on earth peace among those whom God favours.” - Luke 2: 13-14

The splendour of Christmas highlights many contrasts in our surroundings. First of all, it is all about what we aregiven, surprisingly by God. This revelation of glory inheaven was given to simple farmers and shepherds who

celebrate a new birth. It is they who first heard the promise of so much more than their simple pleasures in life. They dare to imagine the real possibility of peace on earth.

Conditions in the world today are marked by contrasts as great as those during Jesus birth. Everywhere we see wildly contradictory instances of poverty and wealth, systems of tyranny and of justices, brutal violence and sincere attempts at reconciliation. Through it all, we are keenly aware of the need for a peace that only God can give.

In this season and in looking to the New Year, we the SFTMA, find encouragement in the potential for seeking just peace through our various activities and programmes in the coming year. Let our hearts and spirits be refreshed once more as we rededicate ourselves to the praise of God in the highest heaven and to our humble attempts of peace on earth.

We wish you all a Blessed Christmas anda Happy New Year.

MALAYALAM, MALAYALAM, ALL AROUND!

By Vivekanandan Panikar, NMMS

For Malayalees, it has become almost impossible toconverse in their mother-tongue without sporadically using English words. However, a few ‘adventurous’ lot especially during Kerala Piravi day, try staying away from using otherlanguages and will speak completely in Malayalam. Techie Vipin V, who works in Trivandrum, says, “We decided to speak only in Malayalam and also gave away gifts to those who used the least number of other language words in their conversation. The highest defaulter was asked to wear a kunukku too.”

Some youth groups hold quiz contests about the language in various centers. Sethulakshmi, a student in Calicut, says, “We have planned a ‘How well you know your language?’ quiz in our hostel, in which fun trivia about its origin andliterature are included. For many in the new generation, even a question as simple as ‘Father of Malayalamlanguage (Thunchaththu Ramanujan Ezhuthachan)’ isn’tan easy one!”

NOT JUST FOR A DAYA group of communication professionals in Kochi aredetermined to do something unique through theirinitiatives. The team aims to popularise Malayalam words, which were once common and now rarely used. Ram Mohan P, who is part of the group, says, “Not many people know that in Malayalam, there are more than 20 terms

to describe words such as lotus and sun. Lotus has many beautiful synonyms, like padmam, ambujam, nalinam and so does sun, for which aadityan, ravi et al can be used. There are also many beautiful terms that can besubstituted for English words like good morning andbreakfast, in Malayalam. We are working towards bringing them back to usage and to begin with, we have decided to use these terms among ourselves and popularise them through word of mouth.”

A significant development for Malayalam language that went almost unnoticed recently was the appointment of linguist Scaria Zacharia as ‘Gundert Chair’ at theUniversity of Tubingen in Germany - a rich repository ofarchival knowledge pertaining to Malayalam language which also includes the over 42,000-page palm leafmanuscripts by Herman Gundert himself. Those who do not love their mother tongue will not be able to savetheir identity.

SFTMA ONAM CULTURAL NITE 2015

Onam Cultural Nite 2015 held on 19 September 2015 at the Civic Centre PJ, brought to life the rich history, tradition and culture of our community. Our forefathers came from Kerala, a state rich in culture and art. They had successfully maintained the traditions and preserved the culture and arts for the future generations. Therefore, the 2015Committee Members of SFTMA are proud to continue to uphold this heritage.

Malayalees from around the Klang Valley donned their best traditional wear to witness the event and immersethemselves as a part of their heritage.

The event took months of planning and practice sessions by performers to perfect their presentation. Kudos to the Cultural Nite 2015 Director, Mr. Sasikumar Poduval for his commitment and perseverance in taking the lead inorganizing the show for our community and friends.

The event began with the lighting of lamp called “Nilavilakku”, a Keralan practice which holds significance in the Muslim, Hindu and Christian Malayaleecommunities.

The evening’s captivating programmes included dance performances such as Oddisi by Sandya Manoj,Mohiniattam by Sandya Satish, Kaikottikali and Oppana by Nrithya Kalanjali dance group, Margam kali and children’s dance by St. Mary’s Syrian Orthodox Church, Kathak dance by the Indian Cultural Centre in Kuala Lumpur and Bangra dance by Punjabi Virsa Bangra Group. Songs included those sang by Nishad Srambil, Bimal Pankaj and Geetha Kumar, not forgetting the mimicry and stand-up comedy acts by Jaidev.

The Committee also took this opportunity to honor our oldest SFTMA member and AMMA founder, Centenarian A.C. Pereira who was accompanied by his family members. Deputy Minister of Federal Territories YB Dato’ Loga Bala Mohan together with SFTMA President, Mr Ravindranath G. Menon, AMMA President, Datuk Suseela Menon and AMMA Foundation President, Mr. Girish Ramachandran and fellow senior members of the community presented Mr. A.C. Pereira with a shawl and a memento as a mark

of appreciation for his invaluable past contributions to the Malayalee community.

We wish to thank the Deputy Minister of Federal Territories, YB Dato’ Loga Bala Mohan for the pledge of RM5,000 to SFTMA on behalf of his Ministry.

YB Dato’ Loga Bala quoted in his speech that “It is indeed heartening to note that we continue to uphold the practice of cultural traditions. If a community does not have culture or its youth have lost that culture, the community will not prevail much further; so it is important we come together to preserve this so that our future will not be lost.”

THE 2015 ONAM CULTURAL NITE COMMITTEE WISHES TO SINCERELY THANK ALL OUR SPECIAL GUESTS,PERFORMERS, GENEROUS DONORS, SPONSORS,MEDIA, ATTENDEES AND WELL-WISHERS. WE COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT.

THANK YOU! OUR HUMBLE PRANAMS!

Yes, The Global Malayalee 2015 [TGM] was indeed an amazing success. Were you at TGM? Did you get an opportunity to rub shoulders with the international “Who’s Who” of the Malayalee community? If you did not attend, you missed out on an opportunity of a lifetime!

The 3-day event held from 27 to 29 November 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, attracted a large number of prominent speakers and visitors, both international and local. It was obvious that every Malayalee who attended TGM felt a new surge of empowerment and identity within the community. The impact of the event to the Malayalee community as well as to the Malaysian national image drew the attention of our Honourable Guest of Honour and Minister of Tourism and Culture, Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz. He not only commended AMMA on the inaugural TGM15 and its outstanding professional organization of this major global event that made Malaysia proud, but also insisted that TGM should be hosted every year in Malaysia together with the Ministry of Tourism. That statement spoke volumes for the grand success of TGM.

The event also received overwhelming endorsements from the Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Oommen Chandy and was inaugurated by Mr. K.C. Joseph, Minister of Rural Development, Planning, Culture and NORKA (Non-Resident Keralites’ Affairs Department) of Kerala.

TGM15 was designed to unite prominent Malayalees of international recognition and celebrate their affluence, achievements, culture, language and traditions. Day 1 kicked off with a high-powered Symposium of Global Achievers. The second night was the TGM Awards Extravaganza, an evening of celebration, dinner, music and dance performances. The third and final day was an invitation to experience the best of Malayalee culture and cuisine at the Kerala Festival Open House, featuring an authentic Kerala lunch or Sadhya, cultural shows and bazaars.

LIVE on stage were award-winning international luminaries such as the eminent Indian MP, the former United Nation’s Under-Secretary General and diplomat, Dr. Shashi Tharoor, former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation and Secretary to the Department of Space in India, Dr. G. Madhavan Nair, finance specialist Professor Dr. JosephCherian, humanitarian extraordinaire, Ms. Uma Preman and President Obama’s favourite stand-up comedian,Dan Nainan, to name a few.

A Malayalee Event of Global Proportions

The event was also attended by our own local notaries, including former Federal Court Judge Tan Sri VC George,Executive Director of SkyPark Group Tan Sri Ravindran Menon, Deputy Non-Executive Chairman of IJM CorporationBerhad Tan Sri Krishnan Tan, Managing Director of PwC Malaysia Sridharan Nair, Founding Secretary and DeputyPresident of the Malaysia-India Business Council Dato’ Bhaskaran Pillai, Head of LandLease Malaysia Dinesh Nambiar, Festival Director of DiverseCity KL Datin Sunita Rajakumar and more.

The pride of TGM15 and the Malayalee community was the honour and recognition given to 22 awardees for their contribution and achievements. The gala awards night was held against the backdrop of star-studded cultural performers, including top names in the Malayalam entertainment industry. The audience was left spell-bound by such personalities as award-winning singers Madhu Balakrishnan and Sithara, acclaimed international dancer and actress Shobana,high-powered singer Anoop Shankar and Jeenu and many more. A proud moment for Malaysian Malayalees was a live performance by our very own multiple award-winning and now international artiste,Resh (formerly known as Reshmonu).

This is the first time in the history of Malaysia that such an event has been organised by Malaysian Malayalees. If you were not present at TMG15, you have a second chance; this historic event will be televised by our sponsors Asianet and Astro and is expected to reach an audience of almost 36 million viewers in 60 countries, globally.

To conclude, for a success of any event of such magnitude requires the collaboration and cooperation of ourmembers. We the Management Committee of AMMA and AMMA Foundation would like to sincerely thank all TGM15 key sponsors, Members of SFTMA and all other Affiliates that supported and participated the 3-day event. We could not have done it without you!
