BARANGAY HISTORY AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE OF BARANGAY DUGCAL
By: DOMINADOR N. MARCAIDA, JR
MENRO (Des.), LGU-Camaligan
The origin of many residents of Barangay Dugcal is being traced to the three
sisters, surnamed Adea, who were supposedly the daughters of a Spanish friar. According
to our informant, the former municipal councilor Bonifacio Aguid, each of the Adea
sisters were married to three natives of Dugcal by the names of Vidal Custodio (the
father of Ramon, Leon, Emilio, Juan and Felix Custodio), Ciriaco Alayan, and Eustaquio
Alacar (father of Catalina, Julia, Justa, Victoria, Cipriana and Severo).
Our first informant is barangay health worker Justa Agotilla Burton. She is 77
years old, born 14 May 1932 at sitio Gogon, Dugcal. Her parents were Severino Agotilla
and Juana Zuñiga. She was married in 17 January 1963 to Marcial Burton, a native of
Magallanes, Sorsogon, but became widow in 1969. the spouses Marcial and Justa begot
the following children: Marilyn (married to Romulo Tejero of San Francisco,
Camaligan), Josephine (married to Narcisco Pulad of Catanduanes), Rosalie (married to
Noli Bautista), and Jimmy (married to Estrella Oaminal).
Her father, Severino Agotilla, was the son of the spouses Mariano Agotilla and
Bibiana Agagad. Their children were: Antero, Anastacio, Juana, Severino (this
informant’s father) and Benito Agotilla.
Antero was married first to Leona Cordial, and had a son by the name of Arsenio
who married Remedios Mariano whose children were Luningning (married to Rolando
Lopez), Gerry, Olivia (married to Rolando Padolina), Marianina, and Cielo (married to
Antonio Ilo). Antero’s second marriage with Alejandra de Belen of Bacacay, Albay,
begot the following children: Lauro, Juan, Marcelo, Lourdes, Pedro, Alfredo, Rodolfo
and another one.
Anastacio Agotilla was married to Anacleta Asico and had the following children:
Salvacion (married to Teofilo de los Santos), Antonio (married to Rosario Isaac),

Zuñiga, had the following children – Justa (married to Marcial Burton of Magallanes
Sorsogon); and Benito(married Juana Sacramento, had the following children: Elmer
(married Josie), Federico, Javier, Estrella, and Mariano).
Her mother, Juana Zuñiga, was the daughter of Anacleto Zuñiga and Agapita
Abias. Their children were: Juana (married Severino Agotilla); Pedro (married Matilde
Sergio, whose children were: Amelita(married Arturo Almendral), Albina (married

Justa remembers that her father’s main occupation before was farming. Duriing
the habagat months (October to December), he farmed at Batang (Trinagulo, Naga City,
and at Patong, Pamplona during the kataonan months (January to March) at the property
of Mariano Prado (father of Ramon Prado) and Beata Prado (married to a certain
Serafin).
During the Japanese occupation (1942 to 1945), they evacuated to Napao (Patong,
Pamplona) but kept shuttling back and forth to Camaligan. When the Japanese occupied
Camaligan, all residents of sitio Gogon and Dugcal were ordered by the Japanese to
relocate their houses along the San Mateo Creek because they suspected that a guerilla
was operating in the area of Dugcal. Justa’s house were demolished, all but the posts
remained standing. After liberation, her father organized a bayanihan group of residents
to carry their house in tact from San Mateo back to Sitio Gogon.
Justa Burton supplied us a list of delegados and tenientes del barrio from 1941 up
to the present, to wit: Victorio Candelaria (as primer delegado, and her father Severino
Agotilla was the segundo delegado - 1941-46); Ramon Custodio (1947-51,; She was the
female youth president, while Juan Catimbang was the male youth president); Sancho

Candelaria, Guadalupe Arco, Alfredo Al. Asico (Barangay captain for 13 years), Gabriel
Flores, Arturo Almendral, Romulo Candelaria, and Rodelio Punzalan.
During those times, notices to residents were communicated through “harubay”
(bandillo in spanish during the Spanish period of Philippine history). They used kerosene
cans or a piece of bamboo trunk as drum.
Simplicio Asico was the son of the spouses Prisco Asico and a certain Lucrecia.
Their children were Simplicio (married Teofila Alacar); Andres (married Carmen
Collantes); Teotima (married Marcela Alayan); and Jovita (married to Nicolas Querubin).

Alacar. Their children were: Carmen, Baba, Alfredo (married Maria Tejero), Purificacion
(married Juan Catimbang), Brigido, Jose, and Vicente.
Damiana Asico was married to Marcial San Pablo.
Anacleta Asico was married to Anastacio Agotilla, with the following children

(married to Felix Asico who had the following children – Virginia (married to Vicente
Valiente); Alfredo (married to Felicisima Camelo); Romeo; Marita (married to Henry
Malonda); Zosimo (married to Socorro Sanchez); Sofronio (married to Magdalena), and
Ildefonso (married to Prudencia Loberto).

Orsocio Asico married Socorro Flores, and had a daughter by the name of
Luzviminda who was married to a certain Fullente.
Antonio Asico married Macaria Cordial, and had the following children: Anacleto
and Natalio.
Valentin Collantes married Tarsiana del Valle.
Dionisio San Juan was married to Engracia. Dionisio San Juan was married to
Aurea Alacar Tejero, with Diomedes as son. Marciana San Juan was married to Gregorio
del Rosario with son Antonio (married to Agapita Asico).
Juan Abelado married Aquilina Asico, with the following children: Damian
(married Simplicia Tejero, the brother of Ramon Tejero of San Francisco, Camaligan; the
first husband of Simplicia Tejero was Gregorio Collantes, with their children Hermy

Eugenia with their children: Francisco, Jose, and Sister Angustia of the Daughters of
Charity; and then secondly married to Eufemia San Juan.

Teofilo Abelinde married a certain Isabel and had the following children: Cecil
(married Arnold Alilang); Benito (married Josephine Alayan); Crispin (married Gloria),
Isabelita, Josephine (married to Marcial), Helen and Anthony.
Daniela Panobio first married Donato and had a son by the name of Donato Jr.
Her second marriage with a certain Almendral begot the following children: Arturo
(married Amelita Zuñiga), Marianito (married Norma); Carmen (married to Romulo
Barrios); and Lorna (married to Jerry Dais).
The name of sitio Gogon came from the name of the wild grass “gogon” because
in those days the place was “kagugunan.” Barangay Dugcal’s name came from the bikol
word “sungkal” (means “to dig the soil with a pig’s snout”), which the residents used to
call their place because pigs were seen to furrow the soil with their snouts since houses
during those days had no fences and pigs were free to roam the place.

Her father’s other livelihood occupation was to catch kabebe (a fresh water
shelled mullosk) by means of sirok. After a catch, which consisted of one ebb and
another high tide, he took home to Gogon 20 kerosene cans of kabebe which were sold
outright at the bank of the creek to waiting buyers. A kerosene can of kabebe was bought
at two pesos a can. He owned a 20 cavan capacity wooden boat for this purpose. During
the dry months (January to March), her father caught fresh water fishes from almost dried
up water holes and from paddy ricefields, which they sold to residents at the poblacion.
Her mother, Juana Zuñiga Agotilla, was a patadyong weaver . Other women
residents who were patadyong weavers in the area were the following: Biviana
Catmbang, Rosario Alimbubuyog Catimbang, Olimpia Agagad del Rosario, Albina
Zuñiga Pelayo, Juana Zuñiga Agotilla, Teresa Collantes Abelado, Luisa Collantes, and
Eusebia Custodio. Patadyong was sold at twenty pesos per yard. It was weaved out of
binorong thread, which were delivered to these women weavers by two Chinese men by
the name of Tsuka and Insyong. Aside from binorong thread, these weaver used abaca
thread also which was supplied to them from Tabaco, Albay by Alejandra de Belen
(Antero Agotilla). Her mother, Juana Zuñiga, also owned a makina de pie (sewing
machine with pedal), which they transported to Napao, Cagbibi, Pamplona when they
evacuated there during the Japanese occupation.
After graduating at the Vicki’s Academy of dressmaking in 1949, Justa
immediately employed herself by sewing duster dresses which was picked up from her
house by a certain tagalong woman who paid her for her labor at fifty centavos a piece.
When she became widow in 1969, she employed herself as a sidewalk vendor
selling golocena goods at the Naga market from 1970 up to 1977. In 1977, she was
employed as an all around househelper by the spouses Noe Prado and Rosario Catimbang
at their rented Trespeces apartment in Blumentritt, Naga City. Noe Prado was the son of
Zacarias Prado and Felisa Cordial of Camaligan. After her employment with the Prados,
she was taken as a househelp by the Harapas and then, later, by Nelia Aguirre at her
residence on the property of Maria Sacramento de Persia in barangay San Mateo,
Camaligan.

then consisted only of galvanized iron sheets as walls, and corrugated iron sheets for
roofing. The walls and floors were concreted by Delegado Felipe Alayan. The belfry was
constructed during the term of Barangay Captain Gabriel Flores, with the bell donated by

was tiled during Shiela Aguid’s term as youth president, under the administration of

Chicharon making was pioneered in the barangay by Brigido Alipante at Gogon
