By: DOMINADOR N. MARCAIDA, JR

MENRO (Des.), LGU-Camaligan

Justa remembers that her father’s main occupation before was farming. Duriing

the habagat months (October to December), he farmed at Batang (Trinagulo, Naga City,

and at Patong, Pamplona during the kataonan months (January to March) at the property

of Mariano Prado (father of Ramon Prado) and Beata Prado (married to a certain

Serafin).

During the Japanese occupation (1942 to 1945), they evacuated to Napao (Patong,

Pamplona) but kept shuttling back and forth to Camaligan. When the Japanese occupied

Camaligan, all residents of sitio Gogon and Dugcal were ordered by the Japanese to

relocate their houses along the San Mateo Creek because they suspected that a guerilla

was operating in the area of Dugcal. Justa’s house were demolished, all but the posts

remained standing. After liberation, her father organized a bayanihan group of residents

to carry their house in tact from San Mateo back to Sitio Gogon.

Justa Burton supplied us a list of delegados and tenientes del barrio from 1941 up

to the present, to wit: Victorio Candelaria (as primer delegado, and her father Severino

Her second marriage with a certain Almendral begot the following children: Arturo

(married Amelita Zuñiga), Marianito (married Norma); Carmen (married to Romulo

Barrios); and Lorna (married to Jerry Dais).

The name of sitio Gogon came from the name of the wild grass “gogon” because

in those days the place was “kagugunan.” Barangay Dugcal’s name came from the bikol

word “sungkal” (means “to dig the soil with a pig’s snout”), which the residents used to

call their place because pigs were seen to furrow the soil with their snouts since houses

during those days had no fences and pigs were free to roam the place.

Her father’s other livelihood occupation was to catch kabebe (a fresh water

shelled mullosk) by means of sirok. After a catch, which consisted of one ebb and

another high tide, he took home to Gogon 20 kerosene cans of kabebe which were sold

outright at the bank of the creek to waiting buyers. A kerosene can of kabebe was bought

at two pesos a can. He owned a 20 cavan capacity wooden boat for this purpose. During

the dry months (January to March), her father caught fresh water fishes from almost dried

up water holes and from paddy ricefields, which they sold to residents at the poblacion.

Her mother, Juana Zuñiga Agotilla, was a patadyong weaver . Other women

residents who were patadyong weavers in the area were the following: Biviana

Catmbang, Rosario Alimbubuyog Catimbang, Olimpia Agagad del Rosario, Albina

Zuñiga Pelayo, Juana Zuñiga Agotilla, Teresa Collantes Abelado, Luisa Collantes, and

Eusebia Custodio. Patadyong was sold at twenty pesos per yard. It was weaved out of

binorong thread, which were delivered to these women weavers by two Chinese men by

the name of Tsuka and Insyong. Aside from binorong thread, these weaver used abaca

thread also which was supplied to them from Tabaco, Albay by Alejandra de Belen

(Antero Agotilla). Her mother, Juana Zuñiga, also owned a makina de pie (sewing

machine with pedal), which they transported to Napao, Cagbibi, Pamplona when they

evacuated there during the Japanese occupation.

After graduating at the Vicki’s Academy of dressmaking in 1949, Justa

immediately employed herself by sewing duster dresses which was picked up from her

house by a certain tagalong woman who paid her for her labor at fifty centavos a piece.

When she became widow in 1969, she employed herself as a sidewalk vendor

selling golocena goods at the Naga market from 1970 up to 1977. In 1977, she was

employed as an all around househelper by the spouses Noe Prado and Rosario Catimbang

at their rented Trespeces apartment in Blumentritt, Naga City. Noe Prado was the son of

Zacarias Prado and Felisa Cordial of Camaligan. After her employment with the Prados,

she was taken as a househelp by the Harapas and then, later, by Nelia Aguirre at her

residence on the property of Maria Sacramento de Persia in barangay San Mateo,

Camaligan.
