Share in a Living TreasureTHE PURPOSEThe purpose of the Ashland Parks Foundation is to enhance Ashland’s quality of life by financially sup-porting its park system.

Throughout Ashland’s history, the community has supported the park system in various ways. The Foundation facilitates community support by solicit-ing tax-deductible contributions from individuals, businesses, and community organizations. These contributions supplement and improve existing park services in our community.

THE ORGANIZATIONThe Ashland Parks Foundation was established in 1995 under the laws of the State of Oregon as a nonprofit corporation and is recognized by the U.S.Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt benefit foundation. It is administered by a five-member board of Ashland residents.

WAYS TO GIVEGifts to the Foundation can be tailored to your own financial position and will usually have tax advantages. The Foundation is grateful for gifts of any amount. The Foundation’s legal counsel is available to work with prospective donors.

Giving Methods: • Outright Gifts of Monies and Securities (Bequests)• Life Insurance (Transfer of Ownership or Beneficiary)• Real Estate or Other Appreciated Property• Memorial Gifts• Equipment, Materials, Services (Loan or Donation)

Examples of GiftsGifts to the Foundation may take several forms and may be ear-marked as follows:• For specific facilities or capital improvements• For specific programs or activities• For unrestricted use and/or• As an endowment fundContributions of equipment, services, and materials are also welcomed. To provide long-term support, by using interest only, contributions can be made to the Foundation’s Endowment Fund.

Examples of contributions to the Ashland Park System:• The Oregon Shakespeare Festival annually donates proceeds, which are held in trust, of one outdoor performance• George Brinkworth donated his estate, which included property and funds for improvements to neighborhood parks as well as to Lithia Park• The Daniel Meyer Family donated funds to build an outdoor swimming pool at Hunter Park

COMMUNITY NEEDSThe Foundation expends its funds only after careful study of the need. The Board of Directors works closely with the Ashland Parks & Recreation Department in determining priorities and usually concentrates on those projects that the Department budget alone could not provide. The Foundation also works closely with donors to make certain that commitments relating to contributions are fulfilled in a satisfactory and professional way.

New! Check out the Green Living Guide and learn ways to help the environment.

If you want to learn about and see examples of alternative building products, a rain barrel catchment system or solar electric panels, or just learn where you can recycle household items, here’s an exciting news flash! North Mountain Park Nature Center has just developed a Green Living Guide to inform and inspire people about things they can do to live more sustainably, with examples demonstrated on-site at the Nature Center and its surrounding grounds. Each of the 25 examples is described in a brochure that can be downloaded from the website at www.NorthMountainPark.org. Park visitors can pick up copies of the brochure at the Nature Center.

The Nature Center Joins Ashland’s Green Business Program

North Mountain Park Nature Center is now a participant in the City of Ashland’s Green Business Program. The entire Ashland Parks & Recreation Department is also engaged in the certification process. The Green Business Program is a voluntary program that encourages environmental stewardship while practicing economical and ecologically sound business practices. The criteria focus on activities that promote resource conservation, reduce waste, minimize pollution, and also includes education for employees and the public.

Participation will bring numerous benefits including:

• Lower resource and waste disposal costs

• The satisfaction of minimizing the impact on the natural environment

• Recognition for working to build a stronger and healthier community

It has been a busy summer at Ashland Parks & Recreation. Parks staff members were busy with the completion of Scenic Park, the installation of a new pump station for the Lithia Park irrigation system (located adjacent to the upper duck pond), new programs and classes, and an everlasting trail of tourists. With summer nearly behind us and fall quickly approaching, we expect the pace to continue.

Over the summer we had the largest outbreak of duck weed ever experienced in the upper duck pond of Lithia Park. Duck weed is a native plant that thrives in slow-moving bodies of water with some sun exposure. Ducks eat duck weed and the weed is transported between bodies of water on the feathers of migratory water fowl.

Several elements contributed to the large outbreak of duck weed on the pond. First, the population of ducks was greatly diminished this summer as citizens and guests heeded our request to not feed the ducks. With fewer ducks, the water quality improved but there were fewer bills to eat the duck weed. Another contributing factor was the loss of two significant trees last winter that provided shade on the pond. With more sun came more duck weed.

Our research tells us that there are three ways to control duck weed. The first method is chemical application, which the Ashland Parks Commission ruled out. The second is manually skimming the duck weed off the pond. Staff tried this approach and will continue to try different methods to remove the weed. The last approach is mechanical. We will be installing a small aerator in the pond to help push the weed to the edges where it will dry out and die. As the weather turns, the colder temperatures will assist in restoring the pond to the former aesthetic that everyone appreciates.

We thank you for your patience as we work to resolve this new issue, and we look forward to seeing you this fall!
