Presidents Message

1st August 2020 Dear Fellow Rotarians, It seems like just the other day that we started the new Rotary year. Unbelievable that one month has already passed by. Despite the pandemic and despite the lock down, we have been able to complete a few projects including planting saplings, two blood donation camps and two other joint Happy school projects. We have been hampered to have in-person meetings, virtual is the only way for now and perhaps for the next few months. To keep the camaraderie, we had a family program with a ventriloquist. We hope to keep these kinds of programs and other interesting speaker meets going forward. I would however like to appeal to each of you to log in to these virtual meetings. That will be encouraging for the Club Services team who will be enthused to put together more interesting programs for you. I understand the current ‘not so safe’ situation out there, but if you can, with all possible precautions, we will be happy if you would join the community services team on several of the projects lined up by Rtn. Ravikumar H. He will of course communicate the programs to you well in advance. To have more meaningful impact, we will also be conducting joint projects with other Rotary Clubs. You may be aware that, at the instance of the District, we have partnered with a rural Rotary Club i.e. Rotary Club Of Srinivasapura. The purpose of association is to be able to conduct projects in rural areas so that the benefit reaches the hinterland. Although we have been working in Kolar and Chickballapur districts for the past few years, this association will make it easier and also provide us with local support. At the District level, several projects are being undertaken viz. setting up of Covid Care Centers, Kamadhenu project (which involves donating a cow to rural women so that they can earn a livelihood), afforestation (a foundation has been formed called Rotary Environment Foundation in which Rtn. Neil Joseph and our PP Ravishankar Dakoju, are also the trustees). On behalf of all of you I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new member Ashok Uduppa who was inducted on 7th July. Thank you Rtn. Farooq, for introducing Ashok . The July bulletin carried a set of Rotary quiz which was enthusiastically answered by several members, Anns and Annets. The prizes for the winners was sponsored by Rtn. Rao Sahib which I would like to thankfully acknowledge. I also want to thank Rtn. Harikrishna Holla for meticulously putting together the Orchid monthly e-bulletin which has been well appreciated within and outside the Club. Look forward to another fruitful month. The History of Rotary

By Harikrishna S. Holla

The thought came to four friends when they met in a small office in down town Chicago why they should not form a service club. As a result of their foresight the world’s first service club was founded on 23 February 1905. These men wanted to fellowship, friendship and the same time they had desire to something to the society which has given to them everything. Therefore, they contributed and built first public comfort station in 1907 in Chicago down town, since poor people cannot afford to have luxury of bath rooms at their homes.

The vision of Paul Harris club soon spread and more and more like minded people started joining the club and others were invited to join. After considering various options they have decided to name their new club “Rotary” to describe the practice of meeting in rotation at the members’ various places of business. They also adopted wheel as logo or club symbol which has undergone change over the years.

The four friends formed the club predominantly for fellowship. Later they decided to serve the community through their association. By the end of 1905, the Rotary Club of Chicago had 30 members. Three years later a second club was established in San Francisco, California, USA. The next year three more clubs were established on the west coast of the United States and a fourth in New York City. Within a few years other groups formed service clubs based on the Rotary model.

First Rotary Convention

The first Rotary convention was held in the Congress Hotel in Chicago on 15th August 1910. The National Association of Rotary Clubs was organised at that time with 60 members from 16 member clubs. Rotary founder Paul Harris was elected the association’s first president.

Rotary’s international growth

During the 1911-1912 Rotary year, the association became international with the founding of a club in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Soon Rotary crossed the Atlantic to establish clubs in England, Ireland and Northern Ireland. The National Association of Rotary Clubs, which became the International Association of Rotary Clubs in 1912, adopted the name Rotary International (RI) in 1922. Before reaching its 20th birthday, the Rotary association had grown to include some 200 clubs with more than 20,000 members across the globe:

Article on Rotary

• The first Rotary club in Latin America was organised in Havana, Cuba in 1915. • Asia’s first club was established in Manila, Philippines in 1919.

In 1921, Rotary clubs were formed for the first time in Europe (Madrid, Spain), Africa (Johannesburg,

South Africa), and Australia (Melbourne) Rotary in India. The Rotary Club of Calcutta became the first

Rotary club chartered in India on 1 January 1920. Rotary Club of Madras sponsored Rotary

Club of Bangalore, the first club in our district then 319 in 1934

Working for peace The Rotary Foundation

During World War I, Rotary discovered new avenues for service. In 1917,Rotary clubs and Rotarians contributed for war relief and peace fund. Outgoing RI President Arch Klumph proposed the establishment of an endowment fund, which in 1928 became The Rotary Foundation with his personal contribution of $26.50. The Foundation awarded its first humanitarian grant (US$500) in 1930 to the International Society for Crippled Children. After World War II, many clubs that had been disbanded during the conflict were re-established and initiated new service projects, including relief efforts for refugees and prisoners of war.

Rotary Foundation has been spending his funds to make world a better place for living. It has so far contributed 75.7 million dollars till 2018 for its various projects: (Figures in million Dollars) Education and living 10.9 Disease management and Treatment 35.6 Local Economics 10.5 Water and sanitation 18.7

In the aftermath of World War II, Rotary International sent the largest non-governmental organisation delegation to the United Nations Charter Conference, held in 1945 in San Francisco. Forty-nine Rotarians served as delegates, advisors and consultants to the conference. A Rotary-sponsored conference of education ministers and observers held in London in 1943 was the inspiration for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), established in 1946. The Rotary Foundation enjoyed modest growth until 1947, when Rotarians made a significant number of contributions in memory of Paul Harris, who died in January

1947. That same year the Foundation launched its first program, Graduate Fellowships (today called Ambassadorial Scholarships), sending 18 students abroad to seven countries. Today, approximately 1,300 students study abroad as Rotary Scholars every year.

Two of Rotary’s programs for young people, Rotaract and Interact, were started during the turbulent 1960s. Interact (for youth ages 14-18) and Rotaract (for young adults ages 18-30) clubs operate under the guidance of a sponsoring Rotary club and give young people opportunities for community service and leadership development, and to promote international peace and understanding. Service to youth remains an important focus of Rotary.

Rotarians in Action during World War II

Rotary today

Rotary’s most ambitious undertaking, announced in 1985, is the Polio Plus program — a massive campaign to eradicate polio by the year 2005. Conducted with the cooperation of national governments and intergovernmental agencies such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Polio Plus is a paradigm for public/private sector collaboration in the fight against disease. Polio Plus helps support national and regional polio eradication programs by providing vaccine, surveillance support and social mobilization. By the year 2005 – the target date for certification of a polio-free world – Rotarian contributions to the global polio eradication effort will reach a half billion US dollars.

Women in Rotary

First women were admitted in 1987, women are today the fastest-growing segment of Rotary membership, and increasingly hold leadership positions within the organisation. More than 2,000 women serve as club presidents and women are also rapidly assuming regional leadership roles. Currently, some 1.2 million professional men and women belong to more than 30,000clubs worldwide.

Rotary continues to grow internationally. After the collapse of the Iron Curtain, Rotary clubs which had been disbanded during World War II were re-established in central and eastern Europe. In 1990, Rotary clubs were formed in Russia for the first time, and other former Soviet republics soon followed. Kyrgyzstan, once a part of the Soviet Union, is a recent addition.

Today, Rotary International encourages its clubs to focus on a broad spectrum of service activities such as hunger, the environment, violence prevention, illiteracy, drug abuse prevention, polio eradication, youth, the elderly, and AIDS awareness and education. Rotary clubs around the world are united under the motto “Service Above Self.”

D. Ravishankar, then president of Rotary Orchards became one of the highest contributor to Rotary Foundation by contributing Rs.100Cr.($14.7 Millon)to the Rotary Foundation during the year 2018-19.His motto of Joy of Giving has received recognition worldwide and he is one of motivator in the Rotary for promoting Joy of giving

Story of “Rotary Bangalore Orchards Govt. Higher Primary School, Vasanthnagar”..

Seeds of reconstruction of the dilapidated Vasanthnagar Govt. Primary School were sown few years prior to 2018, when RBO and my office in Vasanthnagar were interacting by distributing uniforms to the children, sponsoring notes books and activities during Independence Day, Republic Day, Teacher’s Day, Children’s Day celebration at the school along with a few Rotarians of RBO and my office colleagues.

During one such occasion in January - February’ 18, the ever helpful Corporator Shri. Sampath Kumar requested RBO to help construct a new building for the school, which was otherwise caving down for the deserving children. During one of the Club Assemblies of RBO in March’ 18 at Century Club, I happened to discuss about the request with PP Rtn. Dakoju Ravishankar who was the incoming President for 2018-19. Ravi, immediately grabbed the opportunity and requested me to check, if RBO constructs the building; • Can we name the school after RBO. • Can we have a permanent room for RBO. • Can we have a place to meet. The Govt. through the Head Master got involved along with the Corporator and agreed for our request. Rtn. D. Ravishankar moved quickly with the decision making and by end March’ 18 we had few meetings with the Govt. officials and the area representatives to formalize the requirements and plans for construction. On 1st of June’ 18, we signed the MOU with the Govt. in the presence of Principal Secretary - Education Dr. Shalini Rajaneesh and Department of Primary and Secondary Education, GoK. Between 1st June to 1st July’ 18, the Govt. officials and RWA shifted the students of the existing school consisting of about 180 numbers to a temporary location of Srirama Temple Choultry, 200 mtrs. away from the school premises. The old school building constructed in 1936, which was dilapidated was brought down by demolition contractor and site was handed over to us by 16th July’ 18 for construction.

Govt. and the area representatives organised a big foundation laying function on 17th July’ 18 with all Minsters, MLA’s officials and Local members and honoured Rotary represented by Governor PDG. Suresh Hari and RBO for taking up the milestone project for the welfare of the underprivileged students.

M/s. Vijaya Enterprises - led by Mr. H. B. Shiv Kumar and young and energetic Rtn. Mahantesh and team of Project Engineer Mr. Gupta, Site Engineers etc. started work in full earnest from 17th July itself.

The Corporator Mr. Sampath Kumar dug a bore well from BBMP funds and also helped us to get water from neighbouring temple for construction. The community of Vasanthnagar including the Head Master were excited and we designed the building for a capacity of 750 students, a raise from 180.

In the meanwhile, President Rtn. D. Ravishankar and myself had multiple meetings on the methodology of construction and Ravi brought in Rtn. Mahantesh and his Father-in-law Mr. H. B. Shiv Kumar of M/s. Vijaya Enterprises highly experienced and knowledgeable Contractors who agreed to build the school of 20,000 Sq.ft. at the very bear minimum cost without any profits to them in one year period.

My office Vishwannath Associates, which is situated a few meters away from school site did all the spade work, building design, structural design and supervision pro bono.

By mid Aug’ 18, on excavation we hit a thick deck slab 3 mts. below the ground, which was designed in 1936 to stop the up surge of water in the lake bed of Vasanthnagar. The deck slab which was more than a foot thick was very strong, coming in some parts of foundation and contractor could not break that slab. We brought Shri. Muni Narayana Swamy a structural expert and our structural consultant, who was instrumental in building Vikasa Soudha to solve the deck slab issue. After a few inspections and testing he gave us a solution of fixing the foundation over some part of deck slab, which was extremely strong and would also help us to contain upsurge of water.

Once we came up to the plinth level by Sept’ 18, there was no stopping by the Contractor with the free flow of drawings and site visits from our office and some funds from RBO.

Construction was carried out in a breakneck speed, as if we were possessed and the job was handled very professionally by Rtn. Mahantesh and team and supported by the President Rtn. D. Ravishankar and his twin Philanthropist Rtn. BSN Hari and couple of RBO members by collecting funds for the project. Rotarians like Ramesh Chari, H. Ravi Kumar, K. Vishy, our Inner Wheel PP Shobha Dwarakanath and members of Orchards Inner Wheel, our Partners in service and many more were involved in helping us with funds and construction materials to complete the project.

By March’ 19, the Head Master and a few people involved in the school were getting nonchalant to the project, who were until then extremely polite to us. We completed the construction by first week of June’ 19, which was 10 months since start of our construction and we inaugurated and handed over the premises consisting of 19 class rooms, labs, staff rooms, Head Master room, well designed toilets (which was always a problem), kitchen, watchmen’s family unit in the Ground Floor along with designated play areas, 250 capacity Auditorium and an RBO room.

The building was inaugurated on 25th June’ 19 in the Rotary year of 2018-19 itself by Minister’s, MLA’s, officials, who were surprised and highly appreciative of the design, quality and speed of construction, which had skylights and painted below with solar system by artist Mr. Ravi Kumar and various activities for the children.

The Govt. named the school as

The Rotary Wheel, Orchards Logo, Donors were prominently displayed inside and outside the premises and the buildings spruced up the whole locality and the neighborhood loved taking selfies in front of the school and thanked RBO immensely.

We had a few hiccup’s with the Head Master for handing over the RBO room to us, but we overcame all the issues after

meeting the Commissioner and area MLA who came to the Vasanthnagar School and personally handed over the room to

us and also gave us a Govt. order from Commissioner to BEO, DDPI, addressed to us and the Head Master was shunted out

and a new lady Head Misters came in and gave us a letter and key to the RBO room and to use 250 cap Auditorium to RBO

and Orchards Inner Wheel Club whenever necessary with prior intimation / permission from HM.

It was a very satisfying and an exemplary project of RBO. Again after Dharithri, Chaitanya, KGF school and of course the happy school projects RBO created history.

Cheers to our PP Rtn. D. Ravishankar for his endurance and leadership qualities in ensuring RBO gets its name and room at the school premises.

Club bulletin not only gives Rotary information to its

members but also is a tool to keep the members bound

together. You have brought out a beautiful and well

informed bulletin of your club. Since a majority of the

members may not be able to physically participate in the

club projects, this is the only means of keeping

everybody informed as to how their organisation is

effectively involved in fulfilling the rotary aspiration of

"Service above self" which keeps all the members

inspired. When senior and well versed rotarian like you

is the editor, it is a pillar of strength for the President. I

wish Rotary club of Bangalore Orchard a great Rotary

year 2020-21.

A very good lay out - looks simplistic yet elegant.

The contents look good and u have a flair for writing

and the same is evident.

The interspacing with photos look good and one or

two suggestions from my side:

a) Try to have some snippets / articles specific to

designated Rotary subject (July is Leadership Month )

b) Ask the avenue of service district director / district

advisor/ your club director to give a brief note on the

designated month

c) RI has some brilliant and inspiring one slide designs

( quotes / themes etc) and make use of them..

d) ask one of your club anns / annets to give a para

about one of the club projects...

Wishing the best for current assignment.

-PDG KSNagendra

Hearty congratulations for your bringing out the July

issue of your Club Bulletin " ORCHID".

others) to enrich their Rotary knowledge n Interest.

You have also highlighted your club's Signature Project-

"Truly Icing on the Cake"!!

The Rotary Quiz with mouth-watering quality offers

from Udupi Ruchi, should attract maximum readership,

even from other Rotary Clubs.....

While you have covered well, all in all, an excellent and

sincere efforts to "Showcase" RBO. Keep it going,

month after month.!!!
