Was Jakes Gainsford dalk self betrokke by sy kinders se dood?

On this day nurses were celebrating International Nurses Day, the birth of Florence Nightingale who was born on 12 May 1820. This function was held at Middelburg Hospital, in the Recreation Hall on 13 June 2017. Nurses got an opportunity to read the nurses pledge, which is the pledge they took when they qualified as nurses. The pledge is like a vow taken by nurses, promising to take care of the sick with love, conscience and dignity. They renew these vows during the lighting of candles.

International is not impossible! Local singer and model Natasha Zaaiman (18) had a dream come true when she was invited to perform on an

international stage. The International ARTS Talent Show-

case is an Annual Talent Showcase held in Johannesburg, which brings Talent from all nine provinces in South Africa to showcase their performance abilities to International Talent Scout Kim Myers (Director of ARTS), for an opportunity to be scouted to represent South Africa at The Applause Rising Talent Showcase in Orlando Florida, USA.

“I took singing lessons most of my life. When I stopped I decided that I can’t just sit and do nothing. I then started with dance lessons and I loved it. I danced for only eight months when Nadia Smit told me about the arts. She was also my dance instructor and owner of Infinity Dance Academy. She introduced me to the whole idea of arts and I was in it to win it.”

Natasha explains that it all started with a choice she had to make whether or not to go for the audition. “I knew it was a big risk and I thought of all the things that could go wrong, but also all the big opportunities that would be presented on my path.”

She auditioned at the Just You Artist Management office in April 2016 and was honoured to be chosen by Elsubie Verlin-den, Director and Owner of Just You Mod-el and Artist Management, to perform in Johannesburg, where international scout, Kim Myers, would be attending.

She was selected in the following categories: Singing, TV Commercial and Modelling.

“I grew up as a singer and never thought of doing anything else, but along came modelling and I fell in love with the satisfying feeling I got on the ramp. At the first Bootcamp I tried TV commercials and the facilitators recom-mended that I do TV commercials and keep practising. I enjoyed doing TV com-mercial so much that I found it impossi-ble not to do it at ARTS.”

At the National event in October 2016,

Natasha was scouted by Kim to perform in The Applause Rising Talent Showcase in Orlando Florida, USA.

“As an unexperienced model I was scared at first because I thought It would be impossible for me to be successful, but as time passed I realised that it was something I loved and that I will find success in being a model. I enjoy every minute on the runway and behind the camera and this is one way of inspiring other girls to go out there and show off their talents.”

Growing up she constantly heard that she was too skinny and never felt confi-dent in herself and her body.

“I developed a complex and never felt confident showing myself off in front of people. Being on the runway, knowing that I am the perfect size, my complex started to fade into nothing. I am most confident when I step out onto the stage and my goal is to show it to other people.”

In preparation for the international event, Natasha has joined local modelling academy, ACE Models.

Director Diana Jansen believes that Natasha has a natural talent when it comes to modelling and says that this local girl has a bright future in modelling and TV commercials.

Natasha says that she wants other art-ists all over South Africa to know that it is possible for your dreams to come true and to never let negative people stand in the way of what is truly important. She believes that no obstacle is too big for one to overcome.

“With that mindset I will go to America and show them what a small town girl can do. ARTS will be life changing and I can’t wait.”

• Natasha will be performing in Or-lando from 28 July to 10 August 2017 in front of world class agents, cast-ing directors, producers and record labels in the following items: Fashion Runway, Fashion Theme, Photography, Swimsuit, Creative Runway, TV Com-mercials and Singing Solo.

• Follow her journey on the follow-ing platform: Instagram: @natashaz-aaiman.

Long, long ago a young woman with big green eyes stole the heart of a martial arts expert and bodyguard.

Does it sound like a fairytale? Well, this is a fairytale love story and it hap-pened to a beautiful young woman from eMalahleni.

Moniqe Fiddes was only 19 years old when she literally ‘stumbled’ in love with Matt Fiddes.

Moniqe was attending the Afrikaans Music Awards, Ghoemas, at Carnival City and bumped into Matt who was attend-ing a meeting.

It was love at first sight. “We bumped into each other and I was like, ‘Wow,’ Moniqe said.

Matt teases his wife and jokingly replied, “She’s kidding. She took my num-ber and started pestering me.”

After a whirlwind romance the couple married in July 2012.

Today Moniqe and Matt are the parents of two gorgeous little boys, Hero and Zack.

But who is this beauti-ful young woman who stole the heart of multi-millionaire Matt?

Moniqe is a daugh-ter of the City

FAIRYTALEof Coal, whose love for music started at the tender age of eight when her dad brought her a guitar.

“I didn’t really know how to play a guitar or even how to hold a guitar. I was determined enough to learn exactly how to do it and that’s exactly what I did.”

After watching the true life story of a woman called Selena, Moniqe decided that she was going to become a singer.

Besides Matt and the boys it is music that inspires, motivates and drives her.

“The actress who played the lead role in the movie, Selena was none other than Jennifer Lopez, and I began to watch and follow her career.

Selena and Jennifer Lopez are my music role models and influencers.”

At age 14, Moniqe competed in South Africa’s National Eisteddfod and won a gold medal for best performance. Later that year she won the new voice of Africa award.

In 2009, Moniqe was signed to a record company who later

released her first album ‘Ek kan’ in 2010.

Moniqe left school at 16 to focus on the career

she loved. “I had the opportunity

to do a national tour that is why I left school. My

mom was hesitant at first. Instead of going to a nor-mal school, I was given the

opportunity to complete a performing arts diploma

and a TV/Drama diplo-ma. I excelled at this,

and my mother

saw the passion and effort I put in, which resulted in me obtaining an A+ grade.”

From there the roads took Moniqe to some of the biggest music festivals in South Africa and she was invited to perform at various television and radio shows.

“This gave me the platform to dabble in some master of ceremonies work as well and broaden my scope of expertise.”

In 2013 Moniqe released her single ‘Tell me Y’ that has reached over 230 000 views within two months.

Moniqe became a director of the MF Group (Matt Fiddes Martial arts, MF Dance, MF Pilates, MF Street education) and took a few years off from behind the microphone.

Recently she picked up on where she left off with her music career.

“I’m working on my newest album as well as being a mum, getting fit in the gym and collaborating as the director of my new adventure.”

She is currently working with a former publisher and producer from EMI, who has worked with international A-lists pop stars such as Victoria Beckham and Kylie Minogue. He has already finished one of her singles and they are shooting the music video within the next few months.

For those who believe in fairytale love stories, this is a modern love story that still has so many blank pages wherein the adventures of Moniqe, Matt, Zack and Hero can be written down.

The eight-year old whose fingers could barely go around the guitar’s neck

today creates beautiful music for everyone that gets a chance to

meet her.Matt, who is a

world renowned martial arts, fitness

and celebrity trainer and well known for his role as Michael Jackson’s former bodyguard, found a gem. She might be tiny and petite, but Moniqe Fiddes is making waves in the international music industry.

beautyFrom beast With one touch Seretha

Herbst can scorch the flesh right off your face. You’ll be a bloody mess

when she’s through with you, so that not even your mama would be able to recognize you.Seretha has always had a morbid fascina-tion with innards and gore. Now she brings it to life with her special effects makeup artistry.

Each macabre metamorphosis Sere-tha undertakes is done with a hint of Tim Burton’s Je ne sais quoi.

“I grew up in a very conservative home and always waited for my parents to leave for a game of bowls, before sitting down in front of the mirror and transforming myself into different char-acters,” Seretha told Get It.

One night her mom and dad, Frans and Retha, returned earlier than usual

tofrom a satifying day on the greens.

Unaware of her parent’s return, Sere-tha struck a pose in front of her mirror, made up in traditional skull face, when Retha walked in.

Today, Frans and Retha are their daughter’s staunchest fans, taking a seat without hesitation when Seretha wants to master a new special effects look.

“You can do anything with what you have in the home, like household gelatin mixed with Kellogg’s Cornflakes for vomit, gelatin and rice for maggots and coffee and gelatin for scabs,” Seretha explains.

During a demonstration of her skills in the workshop of the family busi-ness Inyati Canvas with Get It, Seretha decided to transform the model into a fourth degree burn victim.

Using only gelatin mixed with glycerin and everyday foundation, the model soon morphed into a personified representation of the reference picture Seretha works from.

After applying Prit to the model’s eyebrow, she began layering the gelatin mixture onto the skin, forming the typi-cal burn abrasions associated with such trauma.

“You have to use a reference picture

to be able to transform your model into an exact same replica of the day before, on movie sets filming can take months and certain characters have to be made up repeatedly on set,” Seretha explains.

Some sessions can take up to 18-hours in the makeup chair, and espe-cially prosthetic’s like ears and noses take a lot of time to create.

Seretha draws inspiration from TV series like American Horror Story and The Walking Dead.

“It’s hard to explain your fascina-tion with disembowelment, amputated extremities or cracked skulls, at worst I’ve been branded a Satanist, and at best a natural born talent,” Seretha dismisses the critics adding that practice makes perfect in the highly competitive world of Yoda, E.T. and Edward Scissorhands.

The makeup simply tears off when filming is done, though some of the products may be harmful in the wrong hands. Seretha’s hands however can do no wrong.

Perhaps some adapted lyrics from one of Cabaret icon Liza Minelli’s legendary songs describe Seretha best - She is who she is, she wants no praise, she wants no pity, she bangs her own drum, some think it’s noise, she thinks is pretty!

energy is contagiousNomvula’sMany women think that the key

to beauty lies in the bottom of their makeup bag.Until you meet Nomvula

Mabuza. This 32-year old beauty from eMalahle-

ni is a finalist in the Mrs Africa pageant.Nomvula however does not fit in the

stereotype model mould. She is the first to admit that she is curvy. With or without make up this woman is beautiful.

Add personality, passion and a zest for life and you have a winning recipe.

Nomvula found time in her hectic schedule to tell a bit more about this new adventure she is embarking on, being a single mom and what life was like grow-ing up in the City of Coal.

From the word go the record is set straight and this lady has no grey area. Everything is black or white and to top it all off she is her own worst critic.

“We lived in Lynnville in Lekgola Street. My parents were the first to have a double storey house and immediately we were labelled as the ‘children from the office’. Of course going to St Thomas Aquinas School added to the label,” she shared some of her childhood memories.

“I loved school. There I was free to express myself without restrictions or expectations.”

Nomvula remembers watching the Miss South Africa pageants on television in her parent’s house.

“This was our highlight. We prepared food, got comfy in front of the television and would not move until the winner was announced. Jacqui Mofokeng made his-tory when she was crowned the first black Miss South Africa back in 1993. I remem-ber it as if it was yesterday.”

Already then Nomvula had the perfect picture of a model stuck in her head. She had once entered for Miss Teen, but quit the competition because she thought she was not skinny or tall enough.

After matriculating from Witbank High School she took a gap year and went to the United Kingdom where she was a waitress. And while abroad she got a

Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management majoring in Accounting from Brunel University in Uxbridge, London.

Then while working for Eskom Nom-vula met her soul mate, former co-opera-tive governance and traditional affairs minister Sicelo Shiceka.

Her eyes became cloudy as she wanders through the yesterdays and remembers their love story.

Involuntary, one question pops up, is it possible to really love only one person?

“I loved Sicelo with all my heart. I am privileged to be loved by him and to have loved him in return. He taught me so much, one of which is to always stay humble.”

Sicelo died in April 2012 leaving Nom-vula devastated.

“I came undone. I often asked God why He took Sicelo away from me. Then one day I realised that God knew time was short. God fast tracked our relation-ship and after only three months we were married. So God gave me everything and I did not see that at the time.”

Today Nomvula is the proud mom of Mongezi (10) and Mbali (7).

“They remind me of Sicelo every day. Mongezi and Mbali is proof of a perfect love.”

With a smile she regains her poise and tells more about the projects she is involved in.

“I am a voice for the voiceless. I stand up for women and children and get excited when a project bears fruit.”

Nomvula is busy organising the Walk for Freedom A21 in association with an International Human Rights Organisation in the United States of America. The walk will be about human trafficking, sexual exploitation, slavery and child labour.

When one meets Nomvula, you realise a woman who understands how to give and appreciate all that life has to offer is complete.

Nomvula’s energy is contagious and she leaves a legacy of hope wherever she goes.

Behind the scenes and ahead of the culmination at one of the coun-try’s most highly rated airshows, the Middelburg Airshow 2017,

stood a group of local women poised and prepared, part of the organising committee and essential to its success.

Taking time off busy schedules often meant sacrifices, such as from family time and work responsibilities, to work hard and deal with all the red tape and chal-lenges that present itself to every other organising committee.

There’s a general consensus that the lead women are the true unsung heroes that brings the reality of a dream come true - and that is taking care of all their responsibilities in making the Airshow an unforgettable spectacle that will forever linger on in the hearts and minds of thousands of people.Melanie van RooyenMelanie schooled and matriculated in Middelburg, and became involved with the Airshow, initially as secretary, due to her husband’s responsibility as chairper-son of the Middelburg Aero Club.

The magnitude of the airshow re-sulted in Melanie taking responsibility for admin, general enquiries, vendor-related enquiries and overall marketing of the event.

“Putting together the largest and best organised Airshow that Middelburg has ever seen has required the tireless effort of a sprawling network of volunteers and people passionate about aviation. There’s challenges to keep everyone happy and the logistics can be overwhelming at times,” says Melanie.Chantal BekkerWith more than 19 years as a resident of the town, Chantal is an active member of the Middelburg Community. She is also part of Rotary - who were approached by

the Middelburg Aero Club to set up the beer tent and VIP area.

Along with a team of about 50 people, they took control of their respon-sibilities without hesitation but deter-mined to exceed expectations.

“When you work in an environment that requires interaction with hundreds of people, many things can go wrong. But we had an amazing team and the public created an atmosphere of happi-ness and all round good clean fun. We couldn’t help but acknowledge the fact that this event does so much good for our town, and we are really grateful to be part of the Middelburg Airshow and this community”. Elma BreytenbachAs an employee at Pegasus, one of the main sponsors of the Airshow, it was a natural process for Elma to get involved - partly also because she really wanted to.Elma was responsible for public safety, and assisted with ground control and vendor spaces.

Her work started closer to the event date, and she says that as the Airshow drew nearer, so did the hard work and pressure to deliver increased.

“We took up this responsibility be-cause we knew we could do it. Of course it wasn’t always easy, but we were com-mitted to the cause and are really proud of what we achieved,” said Elma.Emmerentia van der MerweBorn in Stoffberg, Emmerentia has always been part of the Middelburg community and has a selfless attitude towards people and children across all walks of life.

She has been mainly responsible for the Charity Day event, which gives the opportunity for children at Victim Support Centres, Orphanages and Care Homes to experience first hand aircraft

and even go for a ride in a helicopter - for most it’s a once in a lifetime experience. People from Old Age Homes, Hospice and others are also invited on the day.

Whilst this might be a whole separate requirement in terms of planning and preparation, Emmerentia pulled it off without a hitch and was commended by fellow organisers and the public alike.

“For me it was incredibly special to be given the opportunity to make everyone feel like part of the community, so that no one feels left out,” she said, speaking about organising skydivers to land at various schools, some in the township, to bring the feeling of the Airshow right to their doorstep.Irene LovettIrene was responsible for hosting the VIP’s on the day of the Airshow - which comprise of people who in one way or another contribute to our airshow and to aviation in general. This included more than 250 people, including the Mayor and his entourage, Sponsors, Display Pilots, Media, Aviation Authorities, and Emergency Services.

Sit down meals were served and snacks and drinks served throughout the day. The area also provided for a viewing deck from where the Airshow displays were enjoyed in comfort.

“The VIP’s are considered an essential part of the success of our Airshow and we are greatful for the contribution and for that reason we enjoy taking care of them. We also filled many Guesthouses in Middelburg which I consider business to our own community, ” said Irene. “I believe that it does not take one person to manage and do all these things but a ‘Great Airshow Committee Team.’ Thank you for each and everyone’s support to make the Middelburg Airshow a great success”.

There are many exciting things lined up at the Ridge Casino such as shows with top local perform-ers, great offers at our food and

beverage outlets and some cash and cars in between.

One of the exciting snippets is that a new Marketing Manager has been ap-pointed after Sharika Betts took up a job offer at the Silverstar Casino.

Stepping in Sharika’s boots is the very bubbly Marina Coetzee.

Marina enjoys the outdoors and to trade in her heels for a set of cycling shoes, “you can call me a social mountain biker”.

After completing her BCom Market-ing and Tourism studies and finishing her Honours in Marketing and Entrepreneur-ship she started her journey with Tsogo Sun at the Emnotweni Casino in Nelspruit.

But it was not long before she got a chance in the Customer Relationship Mar-keting division here at The Ridge Casino.

“I was nervous when I first landed here. But I got an awesome mentor as part of the package,” Marina said.

Sharika took her under her wing and moulded Marina into a leader with strong values and a clear vision.

“Sharika taught me to listen to listen and not listen to answer.”

Armed with these valuable lessons Marina has taken up the reins at the popu-lar casino.

Marina has an awesome team support-ing her.

This is how she sees the people work-ing alongside her to give patrons of The Ridge an exceptional experience when they visit the casino. Goodman Khumalo is our spontaneous en energetic colleague. Goodman is living out the brand. The only thorn between all the beautiful, colourful ‘marketing roses’, and we love him for that.

The very stylish Nomthandazo Sithole always has a witty comment ready. This lady is young, ambitious and a go getter. She is someone who drives projects and ensures that the outcome is positive.

Agnes Morena has been here since our

Champion Casino days. She knows the business and the people inside and out. She is our go to person, someone we can rely on, someone who gets the job done. She is a special lady indeed.

Sakhile Thabethe is without a doubt the life of the party. Our blue hair kind of girl. She is tough on the outside, but such a small and loving heart. Our party starter and our team’s biggest supporter.

Desiree Mahlangu is the baby in our marketing family. Desiree is driven, pas-sionate and eager to learn. Desiree has mastered the microphone and now there is no stopping her. She just loves the sound of her own voice.

Caroline Kgotso defines finesse, grace and elegance. She is a perfectionist and really good negotiator.

Nonhlanha Thabethe is the most beautiful woman inside and out with a humble personality. Nonhlanhla is passionate about her work, friends and family and a true inspiration to those around her.

Meraksha Padayachy is driven and somewhat of a mother figure to the rest of her team. Meraksha is beautiful, caring and also a perfectionist. She keeps us all together, also one of our team’s biggest supporters.

With a team like this behind her, there is no doubt that Marina can only but reach for the skies.

Next time you visit The Ridge go say hallo to Marina and her team that are always there to welcome you with the hospitality that you deserve at The Ridge Casino where there is something for everyone to do.

Sharleen Horsley: Leading the Newly Revamped Protea Hotel Witbank

Odele van der Merwe: Fun-loving family driven

167 Jellicoe StreeteMalahleni

Who is taking care of you?Women at Protea Hotel

Witbank / HighveldI am a fun-loving career as well as family driven farm girl. Ever since I set foot in the first hotel at which I worked in 2004 after studying to be a hairdresser, I knew that all I that I wanted was to be a general manager for a hotel one day.

In fact, when asked in my interview for a reception-ist position at Protea Hotel Centurion where I saw myself in five years my answer to the General Manager was “In your chair” whereby the General Manager replied, “You are optimistic, but I like it!” I got the job!

In 2012 I was employed as the Deputy General Manager and worked under several great GM’s during my time there.

I moved to the Protea Hotel Capital in 2015 and spent a few years there as the Deputy General manager, that is when I decided that it is time for me to make the right moves to fulfill my dream of becoming a General Manager. After great consideration, I applyed for a General Manager position at the 5 star Boutique Hotel in Dullstroom which meant I would be uprooting my whole family and moving them almost 300Km from the place they called home for so many years.

I spent a month managing the Akabeko Boutique hotel and was then asked to move to Witbank as General Manager of the Protea Hotel Highveld.

I have been here at the Protea Hotel Highveld since April and look forward to managing my awesome TEAM for a few more years to come, or until the next challenge

or opportunity arises. My secret to success is to never be afraid to make a

decision, if it is the wrong decision then it can be fixed but procrastination will get you nowhere.

Look after your staff and in turn your staff will look after you.

My motto is “Don’t be the work of a moment, be the result of a process”

Sharleen Horsley was appointed as the new General Manager at Fortis Hotel’s (newly rebranded Boulevard Group) Protea Hotel Witbank in 2014. A Witbank local, Sharleen is passionate about developing business in the area and has already secured several big wins for the hotel in terms of conferencing projects and new corporate clients.

The opportunity for Sharleen to join the Fortis Hotels arose in 1998 and over the following 10 years, she made a meteoric rise from the role of Receptionist to General Manager. Protea Hotel Witbank offers elegant and comfortable accommodation, with six spacious con-ference facilities to accommodate their core business, Groups & Conventions with Corporates and Government, along with weekly business and leisure travellers en route to Nelspruit and the interior.

When asked about what she brings to her new role, Sharleen had the following to say: “I have adopted a diplomatic style of managing the hotel and encourage my staff to participate and inspire best practice. I have a passion for having a fun working environment and this energy spills over to our guests – they enjoy the warm atmosphere and camaraderie. Service excellence is also extremely important to us. We are very proud

of the fabulous service that Protea Hotel Witbank is known for.”

Sharleen has a Diploma in Travel & Tourism and is a keen traveller, taking every opportunity she can get to enjoy new experiences in her treasured hospitality industry.

selfsorgeenhede.Die eerste stop in Botswana was by
