Hey Terra,

When I’m with my friends I don’t behave. And even though I don’t want to act cool and kinda mean, I feel like I have to! I don’t wanna be with them anymore, but if I leave to be with nicer girls they’ll call me names like “you’re a user.” HELP!

Since high school, peer pressure has gotten worse. To fit in, my friends chose the path of drugs, sex, and alcohol. I, however, felt under pressure to be perfect in every way. I saw perfection in the prettiest, skinniest, most popular girls. I tried to form myself into this “skinny” image in my head...

...I began eating less and less. It caused my period to stop. I couldn’t stay warm. I was tired and stressed all the time. I’m 5’4” and in September I weighed 115. Now I weight 98. Whenever I eat I go into a panic and hate myself. I don’t know what to do! Help!!!

Hey Terra,

I’m worried. My sleep is getting deeper and deeper.

Dad says it’s a struggle to wake me for school and I can get angry to the point of wanting to hurt someone. Are there syndromes or hormones that cause this?

I love my mom but she really annoys me to the point of tears and even deep sadness. At times I’ve thought I’m depressed.

Every little thing, be it a tiny piece of paper on the floor or a dish that didn’t wash properly in the dishwasher, she’ll find a way to make it my fault. I know that sounds dramatic, and you’ll probably dismiss me as a whiny teen, but it seriously can’t be always my fault! You’re the only person I’ve told this to.

When kids and adults are upset we don’t think very clearly, so we’re more likely to say or do things we later regret.

You can help kids calm down with the following technique. It can also work whenever you are too stressed to think!

1. Tell the Truth. “I’m upset!” Better than pretending you’re OK when you’re not.

2. STOP. Otherwise you’ll make the situation worse.

4. THINK: “What am I trying to do?”

5. THINK: Does someone else need to change? If yes –return to #4 and focus on your behavior & reactions.

6. LIST OPTIONS: How might I reach my goal? Include a predicted outcome for each option.

7. EVALUATE OPTIONS: Choose the option that reflects caring & respect for yourself and others.

8. Congrats! You stayed calm and thought it through.
