Wärtsilä Marine Scrubber Portfolio
Open loop scrubber – sea water operations
• Uses seawater i.e. no freshwater needs
• Slightly higher power demand than FWS
• Does not need caustic soda
• Applications: main alternative for ocean-going ships
Closed loop scrubber – fresh water/closed loop operations
• Independent on seawater alkalinity
• Zero effluent discharge an option
• Low power demand
• Needs caustic soda as a reagent
• Applications: seas with extremely low alkalinity and for operators looking for continuous closed loop operation
Hybrid scrubbers – open loop / closed loop operations
• Flexible system
• More complex system
• Applications: ships requiring full flexibility of operations

Inline vs conventional scrubber
Inline scrubber Conventional scrubber
Wash water amount 55 m3/MWh 45 m3/MWh
Max fuel S% content in open loop 2,5% 3,5%
PM removal No Up to 85%
Benefits inline scrubber:
• Smaller footprint and operational flexibility• The main stream configuration provides good redundancy• No by-pass and simple installation
Reference inline scrubber• First installation: Color Line Super Speed 2 in operation • Similar installations for 3 other Color Line vessels• 11 Inline scrubbers (hybrid) ordered for cruise vessels • 4 Inline scrubbers (closed loop) ordered for two RoRo vessel

Sulphur oxides SOx in sea water (scrubbing process) forms sulphuric acid – low pH
Sea water alkalinityneutralizes the pH – rest “product” from scrubbing is sulphate
Sulphate is a natural substance in sea water - approximate amount: 2 700 mg/l

Water treatment and sludge
To be disposed of ashore
Estimated amount:Closed loop: 1,0 kg/MWh Open loop: 0,05 kg/MWh
The amount depends on silt content in water and engine running profile
All Wärtsilä scrubber systems have water treatment included as a default. The goal is to always follow current and future legislation, guaranteeing
compliance for our customer.

Based upon our investigations we needed to find an EGC system with scrubbers that could be fitted into the existing engine casing ColorLine
ColorLine SuperSpeed II:
• Operates 100% within SECA
• 4 x 9,45MW Wärtsilä
• Space limitations in funnel
• Wärtsilä Inline Scrubber installation
