The Societa’ Italiana di Emaferesi e Manipolazione Cellulare (SIdEM) national meeting wiil be held in Florence in a joint fashion with the European Society for Hemapheresis (ESFH). The meeting will deal with attractive and interesting scientific event focused on hemapheresis, cell manipulation and cell therapies. News in this field will be disseminated among participants by international and italian speakers and their expertise will be an exclusive opportunity for stimulating discussions on innovative aspects in the field. The program is planned to have the international ESFH-SIdEM joint meeting on the first two days with common programs and learning sections for physicians and nurses and technicians. Poster and communication sessions will complete this part of the program. The two last days of the meeting will be dedicated to the annual SIdEM adjournment course dealing with non-overlapping topics which will be mainly focused on hemapheresis in specific clinical settings, alternatives to allogeneic transfusions, innovative diagnostics and use of blood components for non trasfusional therapies and regenerative medicine. Also this part of the event will have a common program for physicians and nurse/technicians as well. The general objective of the meeting is that of analyzing in-depth the scentific areas of hemapheresis , cell manipulation and of those aspects of transfusion medicine related to the apheretic therapy and clinical transplantation, combining clinical and methodological aspects that may improve the knowledge of physicians and other professional categories in this innovative field, creating an international and a national scientific context.

SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE: As Medical Director of the Ottawa Centre of the Canadian Red Cross, I was responsible for a team of 90 people who undertook the collection, testing and distribution of blood to 29 Eastern Ontario hospitals. I also directed the research activities of up to 20 scientists and technologists. The centre budget was approximately 6 million dollars.
I have supervised the office staff and acted as Chair of the Canadian Apheresis Group, which manages and organizes the activities of 39 apheresis centres across the country. As Chief of the Division of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine at the Ottawa Hospital, I had overall responsibility for the sections of laboratory hematology, coagulation and the blood bank, at 2 sites of the OHO.
RUTELLA SERGIO Sergio Rutella, M.D. Ph.D., has been awarded the National Habilitation to the position of Associate Professor of
Hematology/Oncology/Rheumatology in December 2013. He is currently Assistant Professor of Hematology at the
Catholic University Med. School in Rome, and Director of the Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion Service
at the IRCCS Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital in Rome, Italy. Dr Rutella is a physician-scientist with a long-term
research experience in the immunological aspects of malignant hematology and in the cellular and molecular
mediators of inflammation. Dr Rutella received his M.D. from the Catholic University of Rome in 1993 (summa
cum laude), followed by residency and fellowship in Hematology in 1997 (with honors) and by a Ph.D. diploma in
Experimental Hematology in 2001 (with honors).
To date, Dr Rutella has published 173 scientific articles (5 editorials, 26 reviews, 124 full-length papers, 18
research letters) and 11 book chapters, mainly in the fields of immune tolerance and inflammation, hematological
malignancies and stem cell transplantation (cumulative I.F. [2012] = 811.256; current H-index = 40) [Google
Scholar]. In 2011, he has been included among the "100 Top Italian Scientists" (area: Hematology and Medicine;
http://www.topitalianscientists.org/Top_italian_scientists_VIA-Academy.aspx). Dr Rutella has gained extensive
experience in the management and appraisal of research staff, and has prepared and submitted successful grant
applications to National funding bodies (Italian Association for Cancer Research, FILAS, Ministry of University and
Scientific Research - MIUR/PRIN). Dr Rutella has given invited seminars at academic institutions in Italy (Univ of
Bologna, Urbino, Milan), France (Burgundy) and the United Kingdom (Univ of Glasgow, Univ of Southampton,
Univ of Oxford) and has lectured at national and international scientific meetings. He served as ad-hoc reviewer for
high-impact scientific journals, in the field of both hematology and immunology, also also for international research
fellowships (Lise Meitner Program, Austrian Science Fund; Research Grants Council, Hong Kong Research
Council; Dutch Cancer Society; Danish Council for Independent Research; Leukemia Lymphoma Research UK;
French National Research Agency (ANR), Programme de Recherche Translationnelle en Santè (PRTS), Association
for International Cancer Research (AICR)) and as external examiner for international PhD programs in Molecular
Medicine (Section of Basic and Applied Immunology; University Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Milan).
Dr Rutella received merit awards in 2011, 2006, 2003 and 2002 from the American Association of Immunologists
for research related to the field of tolerogenic dendritic cells, regulatory T cells and IDO1-driven inflammation, and
a European Commiss Marie Curie Actions Scholarship to attend a ESH-BMTmeeting in 2005. Dr Rutella has
teaching experience at both undergraduate (medical students) and post-graduate level (fellowship programs in hemy
and clinical pathology), with teaching contracts in hematological oncology and stem cell biology at the Catholic
University) and immunology (Nursing School, Univ. of Rome "Tor Vergata"). Dr Rutella's editorial activities
include membership in the advsory editorial board of Current Medicinal Chemistry, IRN Hematology, World
Journal of Stem Cells, American Journal of Translational Research, American Journal of Immunology and World
Journal of Transplantation. He has been Guest Editor of a special issue of Current Medicinal Chemistry on
indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase in inflammation, autoimmunity and cancer, published in early 2011.
