Service For A Smile
I
love baseball. There isn’t a
better sight than a freshly cut
ball field on a warm springafternoon, and no sound hits the
eardrumlike the pop ofa gloveor
the crack ofa bat.I can trace my
loveforthegameallthewayback
to the time when I was ten years
old.My father tookme tomy first
Yankee game and I haven’t
looked back since. Since then,
mylifehas beenriddled with col-
lections of baseball cards, memo-
rization of stats, and until my col-
lege years, the very perfection of play. Some might call it an obses-
sion, but to me it is a simple pas-
sion. There is just something so
magnificent about this sport
called Americas Pastime. See, I
would consider myself a rather
passionate person. I’m the kind of
guy that falls deeply in love with
the things I appreciate. That’s
how I met Dave Swanson. My other significant passion
in fact, my FIRST significant pas-
sion is my passion for the Lord. In
an effort to marry my two great
passions, my faith and my base-
ball, I decided to write a book
about Christian baseball players.
As outlandish as that idea may
have sounded to those on the
outside of my passions, it made
perfect sense to me. Now, I sup-
pose before my real research intothe book took place I had a sort of
a “if you build it they will come
attitude”. In some ways I might
say that I subconsciously assumed
that Christian players would be
banging down my door to get into
this book. No such luck.
Fortunately, however,
one of my busi-
ness associatesat the time
was a for-
mer New
Y o r k
Yankee.
He was
able to
wrangle me
the Holy Grail of
Major League
Baseball: the Major League
Baseball Media Guide. The bookcontained highly privatized inside
information like where players
stayed when travelling and it was
all mine. I was in my glory.
As I mercilessly tore
through this book, trying to
absorb every ounce of knowledge
I could out of it, I
came across a list-
ing for some-thing called
B a s e b a l l
C h a p e l .
Instantly
intrigued, I
looked into
the listing to
find that it was
the perfect mar-
riage between my
faith and my baseball. I found
that Baseball Chapel was anorganization that commissioned
chaplains to conduct short
chapels for Major League teams
and to disciple players who
sought discipleship. My knees
weakened. As I read on further, I
nearly collapsed. The headquar-
ters for this fount of Christian-
baseball goodness were located in
a town called Bloomingdale,New Jersey, fifteen minutes from
my house! Fumbling for the tele-
phone, I quickly dialed the indi-
cated number, itching to get in
touch with the organizations
Executive Director, a Mr. Dave
Swanson.
Just as quickly as he had
greeted me with, “Dave Swanson
here”, I spilled out my own intro-
duction. I said to him, Mr.
Swanson, I love the Lord and Ilove baseball. I was wondering if
you could put me in touch with
some Christian players. Silence
on the other end.
“Why don’t you go ahead
and call me in three months” was
his only reply.
Despite the eternity that
three months would be, I
acknowledged his request andwaited three months before I
called him again. When the cal-
endar finally advanced to the
date circled in red exclaiming
CALL DAVE SWANSON, I
dialed him again. To my surprise,
he said again, “Call me in anoth-
er three months.”
Once again, I agreed and
marked the date down on my cal-
endar. After three more months
had elapsed, I called him again. To my utter dismay, he told me
again to call him in three months.
As confused and perhaps a bit
annoyed as I was, no length of
time would stop me from getting
the information I was seeking. If
this was the man who had what I

Did you ever imagine
that by purchasing a
life insurance policy
you could actually win without
someone having to die? Do
you think that the public
understands the magnitude of alife insurance policy purchase
for the financial gain of the
insured/owner? Is there a rea-
son, other than the death ben-
efit, for someone to purchase a
life insurance policy? Can one
really profit from purchasing a
life insurance policy without
havingto die? Doesa life insur-
ance policy offer competitive
returns when compared to
other fixed principal invest-ments? Are there any tax
advantages to owning a life
insurance policy?
11 questions about your life
insurance policy:
1. Does your current policy
have a common disaster clause?
2. Does your current policy
have a spendthrift and creditor
clause?
3. Is your current policy basedon the most recent mortality table?
4. Does your current policy
allow loans with a net interest rate
of zero? Or less?
5. Does your current policy
allow you to restructure your pre-
miums up or down based on the
returns of the cash value accumu-
lation without prior Home Office
approval?
6. Does your current policy
waive all future premiums shouldyou become permanently dis-
abled?
7. Does your policy make you
feel warm and fuzzy after you pay
your annual premiums?
8. Is your policy’s cash value
guaranteed to earn a minimum of
at least 2% per year and as much
as 29% over a 2 year period?
9. Does your policy offer multi-
ple earnings strategies to maximize
your cash value accumulation?10. Is your insurance carrier still
rated the same as when you pur-
chased your policy? “A or better?”
11. Does your policy have the
potential to run out of life before
you do, perhaps prior to age 100?
When was the last timeyou took a serious look at your
life insurance policies? Has it
been too long and you’re not
fully understanding of what
you’re looking at? Don’t know
the answers to the 11 questions
above? It’s only too late to
upgrade your life insurance
policies if you’re uninsurable or
dead! Otherwise, now would
be a good time to take a look to
see if a re-write is prudent ornecessary.
What if I told you you
could feel warm and fuzzy about
paying your life insurance pre-
miums because you could actu-
ally win by living? What if you
could convert your life insur-
ance expenditures into a non-
qualified, tax-deferred retire-
ment plan supplement, provid-
ing tax-free retirement income
for you for to live on, instead of a death only policy? Would
you want to investigate, with-
out commitment, how you can
do this for yourself? There is no
magic to doing this, just a little
knowledge and proper guid-
ance is all you need. Why give
money to the insurance compa-
ny only to profit in death,
when you can win if you live?
Some readers may think
that my column today seems alittle too salesman like and if
so, for that I apologize. But, I
could think of no better way to
convey the message that life
insurance is the most bought
and least understood product in
America. Written in what Irefer to as insurance hiero-
glyphics, most purchasers of life
insurance policies either trust
the salesman or company or
just buy a plain old term policy.
Statistics teach us that of all
the term policies purchased,
only a few are actually in-force
to pay a death claim, as most
insured’s outlive their policy.
Traditional whole life policies
are traditionally low yielding, with traditionally high premi-
ums and relatively low eco-
nomic value to the purchaser.
You might ask yourself, is there
something better for my premi-
um dollars and for this writer,
the answer is a resounding,
absolutely YES and I’d like todemonstrate it to you with no
cost or obligation, so you can
see for yourself. If your goal is
to buy more coverage and pay
less in premium, in most cases
in my experience this can be
done. If your goal is to pay pre-
miums now and not pay during
your retirement years and suffer
no reduction in coverage, this
too can be done. If your goal is
to create a tax-advantagedincome stream throughout your
retirement years, in addition to
the death benefit, this also can
be done and quite effectively
too. These are but a few rea-
sons to take a second or a third
look at your life insurance poli-
cies and the premiums you arepaying for them.
Here’s my suggestion: pick
up the phone and dial 973-831-
4424 and ask for my personal
assistant, Amber, she will sched-
ule a brief 45 minute appoint-
ment for us to examine your
existing policies and then I’ll
give them back to you. I’ll ask
you some questions as to your
financial goals and objectives
and give you some literature, specific information and a per-
sonalized proposal. If you are
impressed with the results, we
can schedule a second appoint-
ment at your option. That’s it!
It really is that simple for you to
investigate and educate yourself
as to a few upgrade alternatives. If you have no existing life
insurance policy, that’s ok too.
We can propose one for you if it
is in your best interest to do so.
During our conversation you’ll
also have an opportunity to ask
me any other financial, retire-
ment or estate planning ques-
tions that you may need the
answers to. In my opinion,
everyone needs to avail them-
selves of this opportunity andI’m expecting the phone to ring
off the hook, so please call right
away to secure your appoint-

We've been there andworn that for 2010... now what's ahead
for 2011? It turns out that plen-ty of professionals have jobs totell us about the "next bigthing." Anne Mack is one of those futuristic wizards bydirecting "trendspotting" atJWT. Headquartered in NewYork, JWT is a global network
with more than 200 offices inover 90 countries -- employingnearly 10,000 marketing pro-fessionals who stay on the cut-ting edge of "what's happening"in the world of fashion.
"One of the biggest devel-opments in fashion is the effectone of our larger trends, that weare calling 'Life in Real Time,'is having on the industry," saysMack.
"The real-time Web hasresulted in a greater emphasison the immediate and the now, lending a greater sense of urgency to Internet-based
behaviors and beyond. It hasalso helped fuel an expectationof instant gratification. We'rebecoming accustomed to get-ting what we want when wewant it. Increasingly, the mind-set is moving from 'I want that'to 'I want that now,'" she adds.
Mack believes that thefashion industry will respond byintroducing new looks more
frequently, shortening themonths-long delay betweenrunway and retail, and settingup shop where consumers arespending their time (Facebook)rather than expecting con-sumers to come to them.
"The fashion world willmove in fast forward as theindustry begins to disband thetraditional season-basedmodel," Mack acknowledges."While cotton will command apremium price tag, shopperswill embrace simple pleasureslike nail polish and temporarytattoos."
Here are someother predictions byJWT for the yearahead, as consumersembrace a "brave newfashion world":• The Nail Polish
Economy: Women aretypically said to treatthemselves with a nicelipstick during econom-
ically uncertain times, but JWT foresees morebeauty buyers perkingthemselves up with nailpolish.
As sales continueto rise and polishascends to an "it" acces-sory in the fashionworld, look for moreunusual takes -- fromleather nails to pur-posefully chipped nails.Watch for unexpectedcategories to leveragethis trend: Volvo is offer-ing polishes to match
three-color options forthe new S60.• Temporary Tattoos Go
High-End: The latesthot accessory -- both onthe runway and in thebeauty aisle -- gives anon-commitment spinto an otherwise perma-nent choice. Chanel istapping into the trend
with limited-editionskin art. In Dubai, tem-porary tats are availablein real gold. And lowerdown the price scale,House of Dereon offers akit in partnership withTemptu; the promotion-al campaign featuresBeyonce.• Costlier Cotton:
Disturbances among theworld's largest cotton
producers (a severedrought in China, floodsin Pakistan and traderestrictions in India) have
taken a bite out of the globalcotton supply, leading to priceincreases for raw cotton world-wide. Consumers will likely feelthe effect in 2011.• F-Commerce: While only afew brands currently sell direct-ly through Facebook (includingVictoria's Secret, 1-800-Flowers.com and DeltaAirlines), look for "f-com-
merce" to take off in the nextyear. By allowing Facebook vis-itors to shop without leavingthe site, JWT believes brandsadd a social influence to thetransaction. This brings a con-crete return on investment tosocial media.• Fast-Forward Fashion: Thefast-fashion retailers have shop-pers expecting constantturnover, consumers areincreasingly living "Life in RealTime," and fashion's season-based model makes less sense asluxury expands in developingmarkets. Therefore, fashion's

Treatment of muscle and
other soft tissue injury
has traditionally
included various types of mas-
sage, acupressure, trigger point
therapy, “deep tissue” tech-
niques, heat/cold therapy,
ultrasound, electrotherapy and
stretch/strengthen exercise,
among others. More recently,
improved understanding of
neurophysiology has led to the
development additional tech-
niques for soft tissue rehabilita-
tion. Because chiropractors
specialize in treating neuromus-
culoskeletal conditions, manychiropractic offices provide
many versions of soft tissue
techniques.
Iscemic compression and
cross friction massage are soft
tissue techniques that chiro-
practors have found particular-
ly effective for both quick pain
relief and rapid injury rehabili-
tation. It involves a specific
force or pressure for a specific
time to the treated area. Thesetechniques are sometimes
simultaneously combined with
movement and specialized
breathing. What makes this
technique so effective is its
ability to immediately activate
important nerve-muscle reflex-
es. When these reflexes are
stimulated the result is almost
instantaneous relaxation of a
muscle, allowing the muscle to
lengthen. In many cases, prac-
titioners have observed rapid
decrease in pain and inflamma-
tion, and marked improvement
in range of motion.
By essentially “resetting” a
muscle’s resting tone, these
technique seems to facilitatebetter and faster tissue healing.
Not only does it dissipate
chronic muscle triggerpoints
and tendonitis, this techniques
also appears to improve glide
within and between tissues,
and breakdown scar tissue
adhesions in muscles, tendons,
ligaments and around nerves.
Chiropractors have used
these techniques to successfully
treat many soft tissue and jointconditions that other therapies
have failed to resolve. For
example, a patient recently vis-
ited a chiropractor complaining
of debilitating back, hip and
groin pain that began following
a car accident many years earli-
er. She said she had tried
“everything” to cure her prob-lem, to no avail. Walking, gar-
dening and golf were among
the favorite activities she had
been forced to give up long ago,
and only extra-strength
painkillers enabled her to make
it through the day. Utilizing
these soft tissue techniques as
part of her chiropractic care,
she experienced significant
symptom relief after only a few
weeks of treatment. She is nowgoing for walks again, garden-
ing and looking forward to golf.

I
gnoring shoulder pain may be
hazardous to your health.
Similar to knee pain, many
people attribute shoulder pain to
shoulder arthritis. Unlike the
knee, however, arthritis in the
shoulder is actually nowhere as
common. The leading causes of
pain in the shoulder are bursitis,
tendinitis, bone spurs, labral tears
androtatorcuff tears. Of all these
causes, the one diagnosis to not
miss is the full-thickness tear of
therotatorcuff tendon.
The problem with ignor-
ing a full-thickness tear of the
rotatorcufftendonis thatweare
in a race against time. If left
long enough, the rotator cuff
tear becomes impossible to
repair. Whereas partial rotator
cuff tears may heal back, full
thickness rotator cuff tears do
not. Even a full tear of the
Achilles tendon, when placed
into a cast, often heals back. But
the shoulder is a much more
mobile joint, with abundant
amount of synovial fluid (lubri-
cant fluid) that interferes with the
healing process. Furthermore,
the powerful muscle bellies of the
rotator cuff tendon exert forces
pulling the tendon away from its
bony attachment site. When
added together, even the best sling
in the world with a prolonged
period of immobilization will not
result in healing back of a full
thickness tear of the rotator cuff
tendon. With time, the rotator
cuff tear gets progressively larger,
and gradually pulls away from its
bony attachment site. Eventually,
the tendon edge will be too far
from the bony attachment site for
us to repair at the time of surgery.
Once a rotator cuff tear gets
so large as to be irreparable,
there are many potential prob-
lems. Patients typically are in
constant pain. The pain at
night appears to be the worst.
They often complain of pain
reaching overhead, or reaching
behind the back. There is
weakness for reaching above, or
even for pushing objects. With
a large rotator cuff tendon, there
is no cover for the roof of the
“ball and socket” which makes
up the shoulder. Furthermore,
there is no tendon to apply pres-
sure so as to “center” the ball in the
socket. The result is that ball
moves upwardly in an asymmetric,
uncontrolled way in the socket
and erodes away at the cartilage.
If this sequence of events happens
in patients under the age of 65,
there are no good options to sal-
vage the situation. In patients
older than 65, we do have the
option of the reverse total shoul-
der arthroplasty, which is a large,
lengthy and complex operation.
Recently, our office has seen
numerous large, rotator cuff tears
that were bordering on irreparable.
Each time the patients, their fam-
ily and I had long discussions that
we may go into surgery and find
that we cannot repair the rotator
cuff tendon because the tear is so
massive. There was recently one
patient who was only 48 years old
with a very large rotator cuff tear.
We got to know him and his fam-
ily very well. He is a very hard-
working gentleman in the ship-
ping and delivery industry who
just couldn’t find the time to have
his shoulder looked at. His wife
and he were always joking around
in the office, but it was obvious
how much his shoulder was both-
ering him. He was also the type of
guy who would bend over back-
wards to coach his two boys to
baseball scholarships, but put off

Life Insurance is a simple
answer to to a very difficult ques-
tion: How will my family manage
financially when I'm gone? It's a
subject no one wants to talk about
or never mind spending a great
deal of time thinking about. But if
someone depends on you finan-
cially, you really shouldn't avoid it.
Most Americans need Life
Insurance and many who already
have it may need to update their
coverage.
At Huntington &
Wheatsworth our seasoned and
trained staff understand the sensi-
tive nature of issues relating to
obtaining Life Insurance and are
here to assist you in every way.
Homeowners Insurance-
Isn't it amazing how quickly things
change? Our families grow larger
or smaller over the years, and the
sizes of our homes usually change
accordingly. It seems we're always
remodeling, renovating, moving,
up-sizing or down-scaling to meet
our ever changing needs. We buy
new things, replace the old with
the new, or sometimes add those
well-deserved luxuries along the
way.
It can be easy to forget one of
the most important things to con-
sider as our lives, property and pos-
sessions continue to change. Your
insurance coverage should change
and grow with you whenever
these life events happen. Let
Huntington & Wheatsworth
assist you in making those some-
times unassuming yet incredibly
important insurance decisions
with a complimentary policy
review.
Automobile Insurance-
What should I do if I have an auto
accident? If you are involved in a
motor vehicle accident, knowing
the proper procedure to follow can
make the experience a lot less frus-
trating for you. Use the following
list only as a guide to help you and
remember, if your insured with
Huntington & Wheatsworth,
we're only a phone call away. 1.
Write down the name, address
and license number of everyone
involved in the accident and
whether or not anyone visually
appeared to be injured. 2. Write a
description of the other vehicles,
the damage to all vehicles
involved and note details such as
weather conditions and visibility.
3. Call the Police, even if the acci-
dent is minor, you must file an
accident report if the damages
reach $1,000. 4. Write down the
names and addresses of any wit-
nesses. 5. Immediately contact
your insurance company or
Huntington & Wheatsworth to
report your claim. 6. Promptly
notify police if a hit and run driver
is involved. 7. Arrange for the
insurance company to inspect and
appraise your vehicle before its
repair or disposal.

For a youngster with a
sports related injury,
physical therapy treat-
ment can offer an opportunity
to minimize lost playing time
and maximize performance
upon return. Children can be
particularly susceptible to
sports injuries for a variety of
reasons. Children younger
than eight years old have slow-
er reaction times and are less
coordinated because they are
still growing and developing.
Also there is a large discrepan-
cy between the height and
weight of children of the same
age causing an increased risk of
injury. Children may unknow-
ingly take greater risks than
adults during athletics because
they may not assess the danger
of the situation like an adult.
In addition, because
young athletes are increasingly
exposed to overtraining and
excessive levels of physical
activity, overuse injuries are
becoming more prevalent.
Children are often playing the
same sport year round or multi-
ple sports during the season
causing overtraining. Overuse
injuries occur from the repeti-
tive actions that place too
much stress on the bones and
muscles. If not managed prop-
erly and efficiently overuse
injuries can affect normal phys-
ical growth and maturation.
Prevention is the key; gradual
rather than rapid increases in
duration and intensity of train-
ing can usually thwart physical
breakdown.
Certain intrinsic factors
can predispose a young athlete
to overuse injuries. Poor align-
ment and posture can lead to
abnormal stresses on the imma-
ture skeleton. Muscular imbal-
ances can result in muscular
strain and overuse. Children
who have a rapid growth spurt
may demonstrate decreased
flexibility of the muscultendi-
nous unit leading to injury. If
identified early, the progressive
inflexibility associated with
rapid growth can be prevented
with a stretching program that
can reduce the risk of injury.
Some of the most com-
mon types of sports related
overuse injuries in the young
athlete are of the following:
• Anterior knee pain is
pain in front of the knee or
under the knee cap. The knee
is usually sore or swollen. The
cause is usually due to muscular
imbalance caused by weakness
and poor flexibility.
• Little League Elbow is
caused by repetitive throwing
that can result in pain and ten-
derness of the elbow. The pain
typically occurs after the follow
through of the throw. Pitchers
sometimes complain of loss
of velocity or decreased
endurance.
• Swimmers shoulder is
an inflammation of the shoul-
der caused by the repeated
overhead movements associat-
ed with swimming or throwing
a ball.
• Shin splints are charac-
terized by pain in the front of
the lower part of the legs. They
are often caused be repeated
running on a hard surface or
overtraining at the beginning
of a season.

If you're suffering chronic
pain that a dozen trips to
the chiropractor haven't
made any better, you may
want to check out one of the
hottest trends around:
Rolfing. Rolfing was devel-
oped by Dr. Ida P. Rolf and is
also known as structural inte-
gration. Rolf was a biochemist
who was influenced by
osteopathy, physical therapy,
and yoga. Rolfing frees the
unhealthy binding of tissues,
allowing muscles and bones to
return to a balanced position.
Rolfing enthusiasts say that
when they've been treated,
their bodies return to a proper
alignment--eliminating or
reducing chronic pain,
improving coordination, and
increasing overall energy and
health.
Practitioners like Edward
Hemberger, Certified Struct-
ural Integration Practitioner,
use their elbows and hands to
stretch and open fascia, or
muscle sheaths, in order to
correct patterns of misalign-
ment in the
head, shoul-
ders, pelvis,
and legs.
"Rolfing helps
with the func-
tions of
breathing and
digestion, and
it's also been
shown to
improve physi-
cal and mental
health," said
H e m b e r g e r .
H e m b e r g e r
has worked
and been mentored for 7 years
under Dr. Thomas Findley ,
MD PHD, Rolfer.
Hemberger was selected
for 2 USA OLYMPIC TEAMS,
as well as Veterans Hospital in
East Orange, addressing condi-
tions such as poor posture,
arthritis, and muscle problems
in the shoulders and upper
back. While Rolfing is general-
ly designed to occur in a ten-
week series, some people have
reported feeling better just after
one or two treatments. "We try
to be as thorough as possible
and use one session to focus on
just one part of the body, so we
recommend that people go
through the whole series,"
said Hemberger. While
Hemberger admits that Rolfing
can cause temporary pain when
pressure is applied, he says that
it's simply the reaction of dam-
aged tissue being released from
adhesion to
other tissues. "If
it hurts a little,
it's working,"
he said. While
R o l f i n g ' s
advantages are
almost purely
a n e c d o t a l ,
research has
e s t a b l i s h e d
some of its ben-
efits. In 1998,
the UCLA
Department of
Kines io logy
found that
Rolfing resulted in smoother,
larger, less constrained move-
ments, as well as better posture.

“Approximately 1 year ago I went to Dr. Fava with severe pain in my lower back.
An MRI showed that I had herniated disks at L2-L3 and L5-51. The pain was so
bad, there were times I sat on my stairs sliding down on my butt one stair at a
time just to get down. Dr Fava discussed the DRX table with me and I decided to
give it a try hoping to avoid surgery down the road. After just a few sessions
I could see and feel a difference. After about 4 weeks, I can see a significant
difference and will not need surgery. I would recommend this treatment to anyone. The DRX9000 has given me back my life! I am back to normal activities and have
no more pain. I would encourage anyone to consult with Dr. Fava and try the

needed, I was sure as heck going
to play by his rules. After nine
months, Try #3, I called Mr.
Swanson. After a short time on
the phone I hung up. My wife
asked what he had said. Three
more months, I replied.
Three months later, a full
year after my first phone call to
Dave, I looked at the calendar
which indicated it was time to
call and receive my three month
sentence yet again.
“Yes, Mr. Swanson. This is
Joe Pellegrino, you asked me to
call you back in three months
regarding the names of Christian
players.”
His response, “Meet me at
the Kin-Lon Diner in twenty
minutes. “
I’m really not even sure if I
actually hung the phone up.
Dartingup the stairs and into the
bedroom, I quickly changed from
my dirty gym clothes into a
pressed shirt and a tie. Within
mere minutes of the invitation, I
was on my way to the diner.
When I arrived just on time I
found a tall, imposing, bald man
of six-foot-three or so waiting for
meat theentrance.
“Mr. Swanson? “ Henodded.
I stuck out my hand for a
shake and instead of his hand-
shake,I received a piece of paper.
He then turned toward the din-
ing room to find a place for us to
sit. As I stared at him in amaze-
ment, I glanced down towardthe
piece of paper in my hand. On it
were the names of Major League
Baseball players who he consid-
ered tobe strongChristianmen.I
couldn’t believeit.
Before he could find a seat, I
touched his shoulder, “Mr.
Swanson. Forgive me, but why
now?Why aftera year?”
“Take a seat Joe”, he said as
directed me to a booth by the
window.
As we sat, I was perked up
and ready to listen intently. Mr.
Swanson smiled. “My family
owned the Thomas English
Muffin Company. At onetime, I
was in charge of purchasing.
Whenever a salesman called, I
never bought from him the first
time. If he came back a second
time, I still did not buy from him.
Nor did I do so if he came back a
third time.” Mr. Swanson’s eyes
were glued on mine. “But if the
salesman persisted enough to
return a fourth time, then he had
a customer for life. Joe, this is your
fourth time!”
What a lesson in persever-
ance I learned that day. So many
times we can be struck down
when someone says not now over
and over again. In many cases we
can get heavily discouraged by an
initial no. In his first letter to the
Corinthians, Paul writes, “You
know that in a race all the run-
ners run but only one wins the
prize, don't you?” You must run in
such a way that you may be victo-
rious. If we are to get the prize, we
must run in such a way to earn it.
Giving up at small obstacles will
get a man nowhere, but if we per-
severe, keep our eyes on the goal,
and just keep running, we can
experience that elusive place
called where success and purpose
become one.
We would like to know if
you or somebody you know, Not
Just An Average Joe, has over-
come seemingly impossible obsta-
cles and did something they
never thought they could. If so we

Q: Last summer, we
decided to plant veg-
etables in a local com-
munity garden. We started late
and didn't know a lot, but we
had fun and some success. We
thought that this spring we
would like to try seeds instead
of the more expensive
plants.
We have the "TheComplete Idiot's Guide
to Vegetable Gardening"
that you recommended,
but we are unsure of the
best place to buy seeds.
We have decided that we
want to support compa-
nies that don't modify
their seeds. Do you know
of some good sources?
A: Congratulations on
your first gardening attemptand the willingness to learn
more and try again. I think you
will like the catalogs that I am
suggesting today. First, there
are many people like you who
want unmodified seeds. About
35 years ago, some of them
formed an organization called
the Seed Savers Exchange.
They offer over 600 plant vari-
eties to the public in their cata-
log and provide tens of thou-sands of seeds to members of
the nonprofit organization.
The 13,000 members
work to collect, maintain and
distribute heirloom vegetable
varieties. They maintain a list
of members who want to
exchange with each other, but
you don't have to do that to
become a member. One of the
member benefits is getting dis-
counts on seed, plant or book
purchases. Check them out at
www.seedsavers.org.
Seeds of Change has 100
percent certified organic seeds,
so the plants producing the
seeds for your garden were
grown organically. Organic
farmers across the country sup-
ply seeds to this Minnesota-
based company. They have
over 1,200 varieties of seeds,
including some annuals and
perennials. Their website
(www.seedsofchange.com) hasmore options than their cata-
log.
Comstock, Ferre & Co.
has sold vegetable garden seeds
for 200 years at its
Wethersfield, Conn., location.
It was purchased in the past
year by the Gettle family,
which already owns Baker
Creek Heirloom Seeds. Their

Since every dol la r
counts these days,
homeowners need sen-
sible home improvement
products that can help
increase the value of their
homes without breaking the
bank. Synthetic mill work
products are a fast, easy way
to reach this goal. "Easy-to-
install urethane and PVC
products can enhance the
interior and exterior of any
home without busting a budg-
et," says Tina Mealer with
Fypon. "For a minimal prod-
uct investment and even less
'sweat equity,' homeowners
can gain maximum results.
"Fypon's top 20 "no sweat"
20-minute home improve-
ment projects include:
Project 1 -- Place a cross-
head over an outside window
with a keystone to add curb
appeal to the exterior of the
home.
Project 2 -- Wrap unsightly
metal supports in a finished
basement with PVC Column
Wraps to add style to the
room.
Project 3 -- Use Victorian-
style nips and spires to accent
exterior areas, fencing and
gated areas.
Project 4 -- Upgrade the look
of a boring kitchen island by
adding decorative brackets or
corbels as accent pieces.
Project 5 -- Add a urethane
pineapple, the international
sign of hospitality, above the
front entry door.Project 6 -- Dress up a porch
area by adding brackets to
porch posts.
Project 7 - - Cover up
unsightly wooden porch posts
with a semi-assembled, two-
piece classic style PVC
Column Wrap.
Project 8 -- Install carved
leaf or grapevine brackets
under kitchen counter-tops
and shelves to add dimensionand visual appeal to the
room.
Project 9 -- Add a two-piece
urethane ceiling medallion
around a ceiling fan or light-
ing fixture to "pop" some
visual friendliness to the ceil-
ing.
Project 10 -- Add moisture-
resistant corbels to the top of
cabinets to present a more
finished look in the bath-room or laundry room.
Project 11 -- Create a unique
window treatment by hang-
ing a pair of brackets on
either side of a window. Insert
a dowel rod through the
brackets
and drape with fabric for a
fast and easy decorative win-
dow treatment.
Project 12 -- Accent interior
doorways with a keystone.Project 13 -- Install a set of
moisture-resistant urethane
pilasters on both sides of a
shower stall and a door cross-
head overhead to upgrade the
look of the bathroom.
Project 14 -- Create cus-
tomized shelves to house
knick knacks using molding
or PVC boards. Faux finish
the pieces to make a collec-
tion stand out.

Who doesn't love a
picnic? The sun on
your back, the birds
chirping overhead, the wasps
buzzing ... buzzing so close ...
dangerouslyclose,really.Oh boy.
And where is that wine opener?
You forgot the wine opener,huh?
OK, a picnic is not without its
challenges. But picnic afficiona-
dos can borrow all the charm of
a picnic, and leave the ants and
weatherwoes behind,by hosting
a picnic-themed dinner party
indoors to celebrate the arrival
of autumn.
Lifestyle expert and
HGTV host Monica Pedersen
says there are three things youneed for successful entertaining,
"Great food, great wine, and a
great looking table." A picnic
party is no exception. Let's start
with the food.
Because you've moved the pic-
nic inside, you'll have the
resources to serve up more than
just what fits in the cooler. Try a
shrimp dish in a sweet sauce, likeGrilled Shrimp Salsa Verde from
Chef Colin Crowley, Terlato
Wines Executive Chef. Your
guests will appreciate the light
seafood on what's sure to be a
balmy autumn evening. See box
for a complete recipe.
Pair your shrimp with a white
wine, like Rutherford Hill
Chardonnay. The wine's subtle
lemon aroma complements the
sweetness of the shrimp, as wellas the salsa verde flavoring.
"The crisp fresh herbs pair
beautifully with the crispness of
[the] Chardonnay," says
Pedersen.
Of course a picnic is all
about the scenery, so if you give
up the great outdoors for the
comforts of home, you can't skip
out on ambience. However, youalso don't have to spend a for-
tune on table decor.
"Use items you already
have in your own home," says
Pedersen. "Add stylish touches
to a classic picnic with layered
richly colored throw blankets as
table linens, traditional woven
picnic baskets, stylish black iron
lanterns with candles, and
greenery."

ket for a floral-alternative cen-

The beginning of a new
year is a good time to re-
examine what is working
and what needs improvement.
I've come to the conclusionthat it's time to redefine the old
Readers Ask column in order to
expand its focus beyond requests
for recipes from local restaurants.
This new column will still
include such recipes but now will
also be a place to feature all the
interesting recipes that come to
us from food product companies,
magazines and websites.
It's also a place to highlight
favorite recipes from our readers. So, if you have one you would
like to share, please e-mail it to

with a sentence or two about why
it's special to you.
This first recipe comes fromTaste of Home magazine. The
editors of that magazine test hun-
dreds of recipes each year, and
they recently picked their top 10
favorites of 2010. The recipe for
"Everything Bread" received a
five-star rating, the highest possi-

terpiece. Pedersen actually rec-ommends staying away from
flowers completely because their
fragrance could clash with the
aromas from the wine and the
flavor of the food.
Another fun touch?
Pedersen recommends using
wine corks as place card holders.
Just make a small slit lengthwise
along the cork and slide in a
name card. It's a simple touch
that's much more personal thanstaking out a corner of a picnic
blanket.
Whether you're hosting in
your dining room or out on your
screened porch, Pedersen also
recommends getting creative
with your seating.
"Bring your interior furni-
ture outdoors or vice versa," says
Pedersen.
Pull wicker chairs up to
your kitchen table for a fresh, beachy look. Or, bring your
cushioned dining room chairs
out to your patio for a luxury-
meets-nature vibe.
You can do the same with
your tables as well. Grab an out-
door side table and bring it inside
to create a drink station. Set up a
few bottles of wine, glasses, and
red-and-white checkered paper
napkins (keeping with the pic-
nic theme) so that guests canhelp themselves to a drink.
Okay, now you've avoided thegrass stains and had a good meal.
After dinner round up your
guests for an evening stroll
because in the end, nothing
beats a little fresh autumn air.

Everyone has a story. Everyone has an account of
where they’ve been and how they got to where
they are now. We see stories on TV and in the
news; “biggest losers” who overcome extreme hard-
ships and turn 360 degrees to start new lives for them-
selves. Sure, those stories are inspiring.
It’s always incredible to see how some-
one can rise from and conquer a visiblestruggle. But what about the stories that
necessarily don’t make you gasp? What about
the person who overcomes a struggle that outsiders
don’t even know about? Not Just An Average Joe, a motivational
seminar based on destroying mediocrity and examining the po-
tential of every person, is sponsoring a contest to hear the best“average joe” story about rising from moderateness. Whether
you’re a single mom who went back to school, a student who made
the honor roll, or even guy that went back to the gym…we want to
hear about it! The contest
will yield two winners:
one voted on by the staff
of Life & Leisure, and the
other voted on by read-
ers. Prizes will be an-
nounced as the contest
-- progresses.

Record-low interest rates
and record-low hous-
ing prices are renewing
interest in the floundering
housing market for many peo-
ple. Now could be the time to
sell and buy a new home and
earn an even bigger slice of the
real estate pie. Whether an
individual is a buyer or a seller,
or doing both, his or her goal is
toget the best financialdealon
the home -- and often that
means having a qualified real
estate agent working in his or
her corner. Those entering the
real estate realm may have mis-
conceptions about what's
involved. Oftentimes, individ-
uals think they can go it alone
and save money on real estate
commissions in the process.
However, not having a knowl-
edgeable agent to navigate the
process can end up costing
more money in the long run.
An agent is not there just to
open up houses for viewing or
to simply put a for-sale sign on
the front lawn. Agents guide
the seller or buyer through a
complicated process of legali-
ties and emotional hurdles.
The agent also negotiates for
the buyer and seller to help
them make important financial
decisions."When sellers are
interviewing real estate agents
to market their homes, their
primary focus is usually on the
advertising that the agent will
offer them," says Jessica
Goodbody of Weichert
Realtors. "Advertising is
important, but, once sellers
have an offer, they need a
strong negotiator to help them
get the best price and terms.
Buyers should also look for
agents who have strong negoti-
ating skills and neighborhood
knowledge which will help
them make the most of their
purchasing power."Individuals

can expect a real estate agent
to help themnavigatea process
that, to first-time buyers or sell-
ers, can prove intimidating.
Buying a Home
Schedule a consultation to dis-cuss what features and ameni-
ties buyer is looking for in a
home. The agent may suggest
buyers speak
with a mortgage consultant to
figure out their buying power
and obtain a mortgage pre-
approval letter.
The agent will then look
up home listings in a particular
price range and help the buyersto view the homes. When buy-
ers find a home
they want to purchase, the real
estate agent will help them
come up
with a fair
m a r k e t
price and
write up the
contract to
present to
the seller.
The agent
will help
the buyer
negot i a t eon the final
price with
the seller.
In some
states, the
agent will accept a down pay-
ment to
place in trust or work with a
real estate attorney on behalf of
the buyer.
The agent may be present
during a home inspection, which is recommended.
The agent will then
schedule the home appraisal.
He or she will then con-
firm the closing and be present
at closing with the buyer
and the attorney, if necessary.
Selling a Home
He or she will do a market
analysis to figure out the best
price to list the house based on
the neighborhood and compa-
rable sales.
The agent may make sug-
gestions for repairs or improve-
ments that can help make the
home more attractive to buy-
ers.
The real estate agent may
present a marketing plan that
indicates where the home will
be advertised.
He or she will write up a
listing agreement and begin
the process of marketing the
home.
An open house for real
estate brokers may be sched-
uled, also a caravan of brokers
from the agents' own real
estate office and
surrounding affiliates.
An open house for buyers
will be scheduled.
The agent will field calls
from other agents and notify
the seller when a viewing
request has been made.

“The Truth About Nose Surgery”
8/7/2019 221657_1297286481Jan 26 11 z2reduced
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/2216571297286481jan-26-11-z2reduced 32/32
Are you embarrassed by
the appearance of your nose?
Are you thinking about
changing the shape of your
nose or having something done
to improve your breathing? If
so, you're not alone. Each year, approximately 150,000 Ameri-
cans of all ages have "nose
jobs". Besides making you feel
better about your appearance,
nose surgery can alleviate or
cure headaches and breathing
problems, and correct deformi-
ties from birth or injury. Many
people who have had nose sur-
gery are amazed by the differ-
ence it makes in their
self-esteem, a factor that usu-
ally gives them an edge profes-
sionally and personally. These
people hope to achieve im-
proved breathing, a more pleas-
ing appearance, or both. That's
why it's important to be an in-
formed consumer when it
comes to nose surgery.
Computer ImagingGives A Preview
Fortunately, today's high-
tech innovations have made
nose surgery more predictable.
The doctor can use computer-
imaging equipment to project
your face on screen and show
how you might look after nose
surgery (as well as other facial
procedures you might be hav-ing). This allows you to commu-
nicate to your doctor what
changes you would like.
Common QuestionsQ. How much pain is involved?
R. Pain isn't the issue it once
was. Few patients report much,
if any, discomfort, because very
little packing is used.
Q.What's the recovery time?
R. You will have a splint and
bandage on your nose for sev-
eral days, so it's usually about
a week before patients return
to work or start socializing
again. By that time, the
swelling has gone down.
Some people cover up their
bruises with make up.
Q. Does insurance pay?
R. If there's a breathing prob-
lem that's being corrected or if
the nose has been injured, in-
surance may cover part or all of
the surgery.
Q. How much does it cost?
R. The surgical fee is from
$2,500 to $6,000, dependingon the problem being cor-
rected. Charges for the anes-
thesiologist and the facility are
additional.
Choosing A SurgeonIt's important to choose a
doctor who is a specialist in the
nasal airway as well as nasal
aesthetics. As a board certified
facial plastic surgeon who is also
board certified in otolaryngol-
ogy, Dr. Kassir does facial work
exclusively. What this means for
the patient is that the doctor has
extensive experience in facial
procedures such as nasal sur-
gery; thus, he understands not
only aesthetics (how to make
the nose look attractive) but also
function. "This is very important
to people who are involved in
sports and exercise," says Dr.
Kassir. "They want to breathe
well and look good".

difference. - R.R.
Dear Dr. Kassir,You are truly an artist in the work that you do...This surgery has given me a confidence I never
thought I had. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. - A.G.
