Important Facts About WEG Motors and the Energy Policy Act-EPAct
The Department of Energys Energy Policy Act (EPAct 92) became effective October 24, 1997. The purpose isconservation, since electric motors represent a major portion of electrical energy consumption. Also, the adoption ofenergy efficiency motors is expected to reduce the need for new power plants.
Originally, EPAct covered motors were defined as follows:
General Purpose (NEMA and IEC) 1 to 200 HP 3600, 1800 and 1200 RPM
NEMA-T frame NEMA Design A or B 60Hz - 230 and 460 Volts
TEFC or ODP Continuous duty rated Three-phase
Explosion Proof Squirrel cage induction
Foot-mounted Thermally protected
Ball or Roller bearings
Finding this definition too loose, the Department of Energy provided in June 20, 1997 a guidance to electric motormanufacturers in order to help them to identify what motors are considered general purpose, definite purpose orspecial purpose. The DOE classified the motors into these categories:
Category I - General purpose as defined by EPAct and applicable from October 24, 1997.Category II - Definite purpose that can be used in most general purpose applications.
EPAct will be applicable from October 25, 1999 on.Category III, IV and V - Motors not covered by EPAct (definite and special purpose motors).
250HP and up (above EPAct) Two-speed motors 900RPM and lower Brake motors
NEMA Design C or D Inverter duty motors
DC motors Single-phasemotors
Close-coupled JM, JP and P-Base motors Fractional horsepower motors
If you are unsure whether your motor application is covered by EPAct, please contact WEG for clarification.
All WEG High Efficiency motors meet EPAct levels.
WEGs NEMA Premium Efficiency line exceeds EPAct levels. WEG may have some standard efficiency motors in stock that were manufactured before EPAct rules took effect.
These motors may still be available.
Standard efficiency motors are still available on a custom basis for installation outside the United States.
Standard efficiency motors covered by EPAct cannot be sold for application within the United States. These motorsare, however, available for export.

TMW21 Severe Duty motors meet the most demanding severe duty applicationrequirements. With cast iron enclosures TEFC rated IP55, these motors handle bothwet and dirty environments. They are painted with WEGs own special system, usingsynthetic enamel alkyd resin paints, which exceed the ASTM B117 standard for saltspray test. This line is rated for dual frequency and dual voltage (with reduced
TMservice factor) up to 30 HP. W21 Severe Duty motors rating meets or exceeds MG1
Part 31 NEMA Specifications.

TMWEG W21 Severe Duty motors meet the most demanding severe duty applicationrequirements. These TEFC motors are all cast iron construction, with enclosuresrated IP55 to handle wet and dirty environments. They are painted with WEGs ownspecial system, using synthetic enamel alkyd resin paints, which exceed the ASTM
TMB117 standard for salt spray test. The W21 line is rated for 1.25 Service Factor up to100HP and meet Design B (up to 200HP) and Design C (according to electrical table)
torque requirements. This line is rated for dual frequency and dual voltage (withreduced service factor) up to 30 HP. And the entire line is certified Inverter Ratedforuse with a VFD. This rating meets or exceeds MG1 Part 31 NEMA Specifications.
WEGs High Efficiency motors are designed to meet or exceed all EPActrequirements for energy efficiency as defined by the DOE. The efficiency values arecertified according to the DOEs regulations (Certificate of Compliance numberCC029A).
