Environmental data exchange
”Environmental data exchange” is a generic wording for measuring, calculating and reporting environmental impact from transportsThis presentation is focusing on “CO2 reporting” in Freight transports
Starting pointCO2 reporting requirements are becoming more frequent due to:
Voluntary initiatives related to brand image and/or ISO 14000 environmental managementLegal and/or commercial requirements for procurement of transport servicesLegal requirements on CO2 reporting

Environmental responsibility – part of brand image today
Your Volvo complies with strict internationalenvironmental standards and is also manufacturedin one of the cleanest and most resource efficientplants in the world. Volvo Car Corporationhas global ISO certification, whichincludes the environmental standard ISO14001 covering all factories and several of ourother units. We also set requirements for ourpartners so that they work systematically withenvironmental issues.

But,
Reporting requirements are given in many different ways
There are various definitions and calculation methods
Reporting, if done, is often not an integrated of normal business processes

prEN 16258 - Standardisation of calculation and declaration on energy consumptions and GHG emissions in transport services
An upcoming European standard, that will specify guidelines how to calculate and declare/report, on basis of data on:
Type of vehicle and vehicle technology, including fuel alternativesRoute selection/DistanceCargo load and load optimization(Implicitly also on: Local and regional environmental impact depending on geographical and temporal sensitivity)
The standard will provide guidance on how to include fuel life cycle, infrastructure, allocation onto co-transported goods, etc.

Measures for reducing CO2 emissions in freight transports and the role of reporting
Improvement in environmental impacts from freight transports depend on:
Vehicle efficiency and usage of ‘green fuels’Eco-driving, including various technologies supporting the driving style, also to relate to actual traffic situationRoute optimizationImproved transport efficiency through higher filling rate and improved planning of freight transport Applying local regulations restricting transport to certain geographical areas
By enabling access to both aggregated overview as well as detailed data, decisions about where to make efforts and where to combine efforts may be optimized

Current difficulties
Conflicting methodologies and lack of standards:
Choice of parametersChoice of level of detailChoice of calculation principlesIndustrially applicable information and reporting models that are compatible with business models and practicesThe complexity of the world of standards, models, tools and stakeholders
Consensus between transport service providers and transport users is necessary

Quantification and reporting methodology for environmental impact of transports
EIT project’s unique approach:By describing which data to capture about a specific transport
By enabling handling and communication of these data
By integrating requirements and reporting into the business processes
It will then be possible to identify which variables to control to reduce CO2 emissions

Environmental impact– actual data
Real vehicle data including data on goods, distance, fuel consumption, etc. allocated and calculated according to relevant standards.
Average data (theoretically calculated data) about vehicle, distance, fuel consumption, etc. allocated and calculated according to relevant standards.
Intermediate level, where requirements and reported data allows for a mixture of ’yellow’ and ’red’ data calculated according to relevant standards.
Requirements on environmental
reporting
Environmental reporting
By including both actual lowest level data ’red’ as well as real, perfect ’yelllow’ data in the same system, the EIT approach allows for seamless continuous improvement, in line with ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certified management systems.

Implementation of EIT results (I)
The EIT project solution concept could be summarized as following: The cargo owner (Sender) feeds goods related information into the transport system. Within the transport system this information is then sent to the contracted forwarder.
This becomes possible if proposed processes and business communication tools are implemented: • Information about the goods sent in a Transport instruction message
• Package ID (License Plate), specific handling requirements, correct weight, volume, for further details see EIT data model
• Packages are labelled according to License Plate rules

Implementation of EIT results (II)
Transport Service Providers (TSP) are establishing processes and systems support for planning and operational management for improving capacity utilization and secure handling of goods with specific requirements: • TSP ability to handle information received in EDI messages from cargo
owner (Sender) • TSP ability to read License Plate labels and then use the information in
their own handling of transport units and shipments• TSP ability to read and apply information about specific goods and
handling requirements in own processes (dangerous goods, food, medical products, …)
• TSP ability to measure, calculate and report on environmental impact from a specific freight movement

Implementation of EIT results (III)
Intelligent Vehicle Systems are integrated and equipped with services for guiding the vehicle, based on digital map information taking into account the actual cargo, fuel usage, type of vehicle, etc.
• On board vehicle systems should evolve to become part of an integrated information chain linking information about freight - transport services - vehicles - infrastructure
Environmental foot print from the transport is calculated in line with the EIT project solution-concept, using one of three defined methods.
