Oscar Auction GeneratesMore Than $3 Million
Recently Hollywood was buzzing withOscar fever, and part of that buzz wasa private auction generating more than$3 million dollars for 15 seperate Oscarstatuettes from the 30s and 40s.
The auction was two days after themost famous award ceremony. The pri-vate, mail-order auction boasted fa-mous Oscars from films like"The Yearling," "CitizenKane," "Little Women," and"Cavalcade," to name afew.
The highest bidder wonthe Oscar awarded toHerman Mankiewicz for
co-writing "Citizen Kane,"for $588,455.
In second place, the 1933Oscar for best picture "Cav-alcade," auctioned off at$332,165.
While vacationing onthe beach over theNew Year, NateSanders, auction
house owner, receiveda phone call that a private Hollywoodcollector wanted to hold an auction andquickly, Sanders said.
He had auctioned Orson Welles' Oscarfor his part in writing "Citizen Kane,"back in December for $861,542.
The private collector probably knew hecould do the same with the 15 otherOscars, Sanders said.
Sanders' auction house holds a privateauction every month, he said, it waseasy to put something together fastand right in time for the Oscars.
The auction house created a pamphletshowcasing the 15 Oscars. It beganmailing the pamphlets out in Januaryand the bidding happened online.
The interest in the awards received an"unprecedented response," Sanders
said.
This was a record amount of moneygenerated for Hollywood memorabiliafor Oscars, he added.

Think of all the friends you could haveover, said the auctioneer, Max Girardo,as the carousel went up for sale.
Bob Milhous, 75, and his brother Paul
Milhous, 73, spent decades buildingtheir collection. The Milhous Collection,as it has become known, is housed in a39,000-square-foot building. It wasnever opened to the public, though itplayed host to charity fundraisers andsome small private tours.
The brothers made their fortune in theprinting business and a variety of otherventures. They decided to sell off theircollectibles, though, as they plannedtheir estates. They hired two auction
houses, RM Auctions and Sotheby's, tosell their prized possessions.
The offerings were eclectic, to say theleast. A vintage barber chair sold for$28,875, and a toy Mercedes-Benz carwent for $34,500, both far above theirestimates. Also fetching higher-than-expected bids was a grandfather clockthat netted $103,500, a neon sign froma Chevrolet dealership that went for$82,800 and a 1941 PT-22 airplane
that sold for $241,500.
All manner of other items were sold, too: giant toy soldiers that once stoodat FAO Schwarz in New York, funhousemirrors, Tiffany lamps, vintage gaspumps, fine furniture and antique guns
The real highlights of the collection, though, were the antique cars, whichsat perfectly shined in the showroom, and the rare music boxes, player pi-anos, organs and orchestrions, whichare made to simulate the sound of anorchestra all in one piece.
Many of the instruments are elabo-rately decorated with oil paintings, stained glass, gold leaf and moving fig-urines and are considered among thefinest in the world. But bids often camein low. Of the eight automated musicalinstruments with estimates of $1 millionor more, only three netted bids ofseven figures.
Afterward, the Milhouses and some
guests gathered around an organ in themuseum. Paul Milhous said he washappy with the auction's result, sayingit was simply time to move on. Awoman sang, the carousel belowtwirled, and for one final time, the musiccontinued to play.
