Lasenifera a r a c i l l s , h. $ t i p i t a t a and Leptorhynchos ssuamatus are t h r e e sma l l d a i s i e s which may be regarded as i n s i g n i f i c a n t from a h o r t i c u l t u r a l v iewpoint , but which add t o t h e r i chness o f t h e f l o r a i n t h e Anglesea area. T h i s i s a s m a l l p e r e n n i a l he rb w i t h a f l a t r o s e t t e o f leaves from which two t o t h r e e f i n e s tens a r i se , 8-18 cm long. Each stern i s t i p p e d w i t h a t i n y mauve o r w h i t e head, 6-8 mm i n diameter. The basa l leaves, 3-5 cm l o n g and 0.5-1 cm wide, hava s i n u a t e marg ins and t ape r t o narrow e ta l ks . The s t m s a r e smooth, w i t h a few smal l , l i n e a r b r a c t s s c a t t e r e d a long then.

I. sracIlis grows i n damp spo ts a t t h e edges o f pa ths and roads, i n f o r e s t s and heath lands, o f t e n forming smal l , sp read ing co lon ies . I have seen p l a n t s i n f l o u e r from October t o January.

I have one p l a n t growing i n a pot, b u t an keeping a w a t c h f u l eye on i t because Lagen i f e ras o f t e n harbour r o o t aphids.

T h i s i s a much more conspicuous p l a n t . I t has l a r g e r f lower-heads, 10-12 rnm across, and u s u a l l y has mauve-blue rays a l though sometimes t h e r a y s a r e white. The leaves o f tnqenLrera q r a c i l i s x 2 / 3 t h i s specihas a l s o have wavy marg ins and appear as a b a s a l r o s e t t e . The s t m u a r e 5-7 cm long, w i t h a few s m a l l stem leaves. h. s t ic i i tata sanet imes gruws w i t h L. g r a d lis, b u t seems t o be inure robust. I t s r ays are Lollc~a~,

and t h e achenes e r e s l i g h t l y l a r g e r . The achunes o f specie3 i n t h i s genus r ~ s ~ l ~ b l e a n t i q u e l e a t h e r b o t t 18s and so a r e e a s i l y d i s t i n g u i s h e d from Brachvseon~q s p e c i ~ s .

Th is i s a s m a l l p l a n t , bu t i t makes a b r i g h t sp lash o f co lou r from October t o January by reason o f i t s b r i g h t y e l l o w buttons. I t i s a p e r e n n i a l he rb o c c u r r i n g i n t h e harsh cond i t - i o n s o f t h e Anglesea Lookout area where i n d i v i d u a l p l a n t s grow 10-16 cm h i g h and 20-25 cm acroes. The heade, 1-1.5 cm wide, &$@

a r e h e l d s i n g l y a t t h e ends o f s lender , almost woody, u p r i g h t stems, about 10 cm long. The common and s p e c i f i c names a re de r i ved from t h e smal l , t ransparent , s c a l e - l i k e b r a c t s which can be seen along t h e l e n g t h o f t h i s peduncle. \ P/'

The leaves a r e about 2 cm l o n g and 2 mm wide, The upper s u r f a c e has sparse, w h i t e h a i r s , t h e lower su r f ace i s w h i t e and cot tony, and t h e marg ins f o l d under.

I have never t r i e d t o germinate t h e Anglesea form, b u t two o the r forms ( f rom Tasmania and from t h e Cressy t o S h e l f o r d road i n Yestern v i c t o r i a ) germinate i n 7-20 days. They a re easy t o grow i n t h e garden i n a sunny p o s i t i o n and w i l l f l o l ~ e r f o r a l ong t i m e w i t h w t r a water i n sumlner.

I n s p i r e d by Joy C re ig ' e a r t i c l e i n t h e l a s t news le t te r , I declded t o have a go a t l e a f cu t t ings .

I se lec ted Brschvacme multLFida as my s u b j e c t because I em c o l l e c t i n g t h e var ious forms o f i t and have about s i x t e e n o f these so f a r . I chose t h e l a r g e r , more mature leaves and c a r e f u l l y s t r i p p e d than from t h e stems. Any b i t s o f stem bark were tr immed o f f w i t h a r a z o r b l ade and t h e l e a f bases were d ipped i n l i q u i d hormone ( ~ o o t e x ) . The leaves were i n s e r t e d 1/8 i n c h deep i n t o my normal c u t t i n g mix ( 3 p a r t s coarse sand/ l p a r t paatmoss), and t h e punnet c o n t a i n i n g about a dozen c u t t i n g s was p laced on t h e bathroom window s i l l and kep t mois t .

Wi th me, g. m u l t i f i d a takes a month t o 5 weeks t o form r o o t s from normal stem cu t t i ngs . A f t e r two weeks I cou ldn ' t r e s i s t g e n t l y p r i s i n g up a f e ~ ~ leaves t o see what was happening and was agreeably s u r p r i s e d t o f i n d t i n y c l u s t e r s o f r o o t s a l ready p resen t on some o f t h e leaves. A f t e r l e s s t h a n a month nea r l y a l l have r o o t e d and hava been p o t t e d on i n t o i n d i v i d u a l pots. I t w i l l be i n t e r e s t i n g t o see hold, they develop i n t o new p lan t s .

F r e v i o u s y e a r s I h a d been r e m i s s i n p r o v i d i n g r e p o r t s , ( d a r e I comrr~it i t i n w r i t i r q ) and I had b e c a n e o n e o f t h o s e m m b e r s who p l a n t e d numerous t r a y s o f s e a l s eve ry year w i t h o u t e v e r h a n d i n g i n r e s u l t s .

T h i s y e a r I F e l t c o n f i d e n t o f n o t o n l y h a v i n g t h e b e s t g a r d e n i n t h e s t r e e t , (which i s n ' t h a r d i n o u r a r e a ) b u t a l s o c a r r y i n g th rough a l l a s p e c t s o f b e i n g a d i l i g e n t , a c t i v e menber and snowing Maureen u n d e r w i t h rear ts o f p a p e r f i l l e d w i t h t h s r e s u l t s o f my h a r d work.

N u m e r ~ u s p a c k e t s o f s e e d were r e l i g L x l s l y p l a n t e d and f o l l o w e d t h r o u g h uri t h t h e r i t u a l o f s e e d w o r s h i p p i n g e v e r y day. T h i s a c t i v i t y h a d p r e c e d e n c e o v e r a l l m a t t e r ; and p e r s o n s , i n c l u d i n g husband and c h i l d r e n , a l t h o u g h t h e c a t wag s t i l l fed. The f i r s g r e e n s h o o t s u f l i f e a p p e a r e d a F t e r s e v e r a l d a y s i n t h e c o n t a i n e r s h o l d i n g h e l i p t 5 r u n 1 and h e l i c h r y s u m s e e d s , b u t t h e b rachyscome s e e d r e f u s e d t o move, t h a t i s , u n t i 1 I u a s c o m p l e t e l y a s t o u n d e d t o s e e t h a n l i t e r a l l y up s t a k e s and walk o u t o f t h e s e e d t r a y s .

I t was a t t h e midday w o r s h i p , whon t h e s u n was a t i t s h i g h e s t , t h a t I w i t n a s s e d t t j i s phenomenon. I was d o u n o n my h a n d s and knees p j y i n g h o m ~ g e t o t h a s e s e e d t r a y s , when t h e r e b e f o r e my v e r y e y e s , t h s brachyscome s e e d s were s e e n t o s l o w l y s t a n d on and an11 h e a d i n t h e d i r e c t i o n o f t h e l i p o f t h e s e e d t r a y s . T h e r e t h e y p r e c a r i o u = l y b a l a n c e d o n t h e edge , t i l t i n g f i r s t t o t h e r i g h t t h e n t o t h e l e f t , b e f o r e t h e y a b s e i l e d !jown t o g r o u n d l e v e l . On r ~ a c h i n g f i r m t e r r a i n , t h e y moved a t a 90" a n j l e a c r o s s t h e p a t i o b e f o r e d i s a p p e a r i n g c o m p l e t e l y down a deep d a r k h o l e .

I had r e a d ' T h e day o f t h e T r i f f i d s ' b u t t h i s was r i d i c u l o u s , t h i s p h e n m e n - a n i n my s u b u r b a n b a c k y a r d w a r r a n t e d c l o s e r i n v e s t i g a t i o n .

The k n e e l i n g p o s i t i o n u s u a l l y a d o p t e d f o r seed worship was p r o m p t l y c h a n g e d t o n o s e t o t h e ground, c a n p l e t e l y p r o s t r a t e p o s i t i o n . I t was i n t h i s p o s i t i o n t h a t I F i n a l l y d i s c o v e r e d t h e t r u t h b e h i n d t h e enfgma o f t h e w a l k i n g brachyscome s e e d s . Each s e e d was b e i n g c a r c i e l : a l o n g by a n a s s i d u o u s a n t , t h e s e e ~ l s t w i c e t h e i r s i z e prove11 no d e t e r r e n t t o t h e s o d i l i g e n t f e l l o w s i n t e n t on h a r v e s t i n g a l l my b r a c h y s c a n e achenes .

C l o s e r i n s p e c t i o n p r o v e d t h a t g. csrtllncarpa and aculaata a c h e n e s were t h e mos t p r i z e d . T h e i r f l a t s h a p e made them e a s y t o b a l a n c e and t h e ~ u i n y s o f t h e achenes a s s i s t e d i n t h e a b s e i l i n g e x e r c i s e . divaraLfulLa was q u i c k l y d r o p p e d , a s i t s o b o v a t e s h a p e , a l t h o u g h a p p e a r i n g s u c c u l a n t and t o n p t i n g , p r o v e d t o o cumber sane t o c a r r y .

As much as I was f a s c i n a t e d by t h i s c i r c u s b e i n g c o n d u c t e d on my p a t i o , a l l good t h i n g s had t o come t o an end , and a k e t t l e o f b o i l i n g w a t e r was h a s t i l y pou red doun t h e Je l?p d a r k h o l e .

Now, Maureen h a s a l w a y s been a b l e t o r e l y on me never t o h a n d i n r e s u l t s , b u t t h i s y o a r I f e e l I Iiave a bona r i d e excuse . There ant any! I'm s u r e y o u ' l l a l l ag ree .

As always, when i n t h e Rlps, one has t o t a k e advantage o f gaud weathur and w i t h a f i n e day promised, we s e t ou t f o r t h e Chimneys i l l t h e Dead Horse Gap area. T h i s was a p leasan t s t r o l l o f about 1 4 km r e t u r n a long t h e Crackenback R i ve r , u i t h on l y m inor undu la t i ons t o remind da isy -hun te rs o f t h e i r Ta te adventure. Among bogs and snow grass p l a i n s we found p l e n t y o f d a i s i e s and as usua l t h e r e IdaS much debate about i d e n t i f i c a t i o n . There was no doubt; about Braehvscome tenufseapa war. ter ju iscapa i n t h i s locakion, p roduc ing l o v e l y mauve f l owe rs and even mature b l ack achenes as p r o o f o f i d e n t i t y . Ye a l so had few doubts about 8. scap iqera w i t h i t s double l a y e r o f f i n e b r a c t s and we were reasonably s u r e which was 1. n i v e l i s var a l ~ i n a w i t h broador p r i s t i n e wh i t e b r a c t s , a l though we were l e s v c e r t a i n about E. obovata. gha t was t h e l a r g e wh i t e da isy , however, w i t h a r o b u s t u p r i g h t scape and t h e l ong t h i n l e a f a r i s i n g from t h e base? I t i s a k i n t o g. cardioearpa, b u t no t l i s t e d f o r t h e area. Thus t h e f l a vou r o f d iscovery , obse rva t i on and debate con t i nued u n t i l we clinlbecl a sma l l r i s e towards t h e Chin~neys Ridge. Some shaded spo t s beneath Snow Gums, above a g u l l y whtlr~ bruinbies grazed, and m i d 0-. spa thu la ta , Podo lep is and He l i p t e rum anthsmoides, we found an excuse f o r lunch. W h i l s t one o f t h e p a r t y s e t o f r t o c l i m b t h e r i dge , t h e r e s t o f t h e p a r t y dozed over lunch o r botanised.

There was l i t t l e enthusiasm f o r a l o n g walk t h e f o l l o w i n g day, so a very en joyab le t i m e was spent a long t h e B u l l o c k Creek Walk. 8. a c u l e a was conspicuous m o n g t h e t r e e s and 1. s a a t h ~ l a t ~ was e a s i l y i d e n t i f i e d , b u t a g a i n we had our puzzles.
