Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) Contact: The Rectory Phone: 779-7345 The RCIA, a program of the Catholic Church, is oriented towards those who are searching and inquiring about the Catholic way of life. While this program is oriented for adults, it accepts teenagers who are mature enough to participate in the RCIA. Through the RCIA, the Catholic Church extends an invitation to those who are not associated with a community of faith and who wish to become Catholics; those who want to convert to Catholicism from another faith, and those who want to learn about the Catholic faith. These individuals may be involved in interfaith marriages or simply are actively involved in a Church of a different denomination and they want to learn more about the Catholic faith in the spirit of ecumenism. The focus of RCIA, when it concerns conversion into the Catholic Faith, is to prepare the newcomers so they can re-ceive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Holy Eucharist. These Sacraments are normally celebrated in a single service during the Easter Vigil. As a general rule, the RCIA process, usually of a one year duration or less, follows the flow of the Liturgical Calendar. The program of initiation normally starts in May or June around Trinity Sunday. The catechumen (new converts) receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Holy Eucharist on Easter Vigil. The program ends on Pentecost Sunday.

ANNUNCIAT ION-OUR LADY OF FATIMA PLAYERS

Contact: Frank D’Erasmo Phone: 723-3842

The Annunciation Players was created in 1980. Initially, it was the brainstorm of the Home School Association (see page 10) and other interested parishioners. The purpose was to present a musical talent show with chorus and production numbers and a cast consisting of children and adults performing songs, musical numbers and comic skits etc. Every production has been a smash hit! Now known as the Annunciation-Our Lady of Fatima Players, the group has grown to become a family with close ties to one another. Many friendships have been created and we enjoy performing for the parish. We invite you to join our family of players or come watch our next production.

CHRIST IAN SERVICE

Mass for the Handicapped Contact: Diane Vezza Phone: 961-3097 Email: [email protected]

In November, Annunciation-Our Lady of Fatima Parish is host to a Mass and luncheon for physically and mentally challenged adults. As a parish, we set up a beautiful luncheon, cook the food and serve our special guests. The Mass and luncheon take place in the school gym. Many volunteers are needed to welcome our guests, cook and serve the lunch and help in the set up and clean up of the gym. This is a lovely day that lifts one spirit and does wonders for the soul. Please call or email Diane to find out how you can contribute time or food to this wonderful event.

Ministry to Elders, Sick and Homebound

Contact: Sr. Cathy Burns, O.P. Phone: 779-7345 Ministry to elders, sick and homebound is an extension of the work of Jesus. “I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you received me in your homes, naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me, in prison and you visited me. I tell you, indeed, whenever you did this for one of the least of my people, you did it for me.” (Matthew 25:35-36,40) Reaching out to elders includes listening, understanding, affirming, praying with them and bringing Holy Communion. It means paying a visit to the elder, telephone reassurance, doing simple chores, preparing a meal and possibly driving someone to church or to the doctor. As Catholic Christians, we are all called to share our time and talents with God’s people. We have many parishioners who need this vital Christian service. Please call Sr. Cathy if you would have time to help. Thanksgiving Dinners

Contact: Evelyn Cosgrove Phone: 337-7356 During the Thanksgiving season, the parish provides approximately 300 complete Thanksgiving dinners to needy families. Parishioners are asked to drop off a complete dinner (including frozen bird!) at the Parish Room on the Monday and Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving. This is a wonderful way to share your love with less fortunate families. The turkey dinners are distributed to St. Peter’s in south Yonkers, St. Mary and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Mt. Vernon and Mercy Center in the south Bronx.

Contact: Paul Costiglio, Athletic Director Phone: 914-606-1604

Email: [email protected]

Annunciation-Our Lady of Fatima Parish has an award-winning athletic program which has been in existence almost as long as Annunciation School itself. Although each sporting discipline has consistently exhibited strong competitive results, the primary goal of the athletics program (and reinforced via the CYO pledge) is to promote good sportsmanship and fair play. The athletic program currently offers placement in baseball, basketball, cheerleading, softball, volleyball and track to interested parish youngsters. An annual Communion Breakfast is held in the fall to kick off each new season. The CYO program is supported, in part, by donations from the Holy Name Society (see page 6) and serves as a vibrant representation of the school and parish communities.

CHRIST IAN SERVICE (CONT’D)

The Giving Tree (S)

Contact: Diane Vezza Phone: 961-3097 Email: [email protected] During the Christmas season, the parish shows its generosity and love by providing hundreds of new gifts for needy families in Manhattan, the south Bronx and Sleepy Hollow. A Christmas tree is set on the Annunciation Church altar, covered with tags that bear the name and age of a needy child or adult. Parishioners are asked to take a tag on one Sunday and return the following Sunday with a wrapped gift appropriate for the person specified. The tag is to be fastened to the gift. Gifts are then sorted on the Monday after the return date and transported to those families. The organizations supported by the Giving Tree are STEPS to End Family Violence, Mercy Center and St. Teresa Avila Church. The Mitten Tree (N) Contact: Donna Butler Patty Gast Marion Whiting Phone: 725-9002 723-0489 725-1447 Email: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] The Mitten Tree is another way for parishioners to remember the less fortunate at Christmastime. This is a Clothing Drive organized by the Martha and Mary Network. Donations of new hats, gloves, scarves and socks for children, teens and adults are donated to the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal who, in turn, distribute them to the needy. New infant hats and booties are also collected for the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Pediatric Center in Yonkers. Donations may be placed under the Mitten Tree in the vestibule at Our Lady of Fatima Church during the month of December.

On Christmas Eve, at about 7:00 p.m., the dark streets are transformed into a stunning symbol of our community welcoming the Christ Child into our homes as we light luminaria candles in front of our homes. If you are new to the community and would like to take part in this beautiful tradition, please call or email Chris and Nancy. Parishioners are encouraged to pick up their candles at the Breakfast with Santa (see Ladies’ Guild page 14) in early December.

MIDNIGHT RUN Contact: Gene and Karen McCrory Phone: 337-0755 Email: [email protected] The parish supports the Dobbs Ferry-based non-profit Midnight Run. Each run, which results in the feeding and clothing of the homeless in New York City, is a major undertaking. During the morning run, our Parish brings breakfast sandwiches and hot/cold drinks as well as brown bag lunches, snacks, clothing and bags of toiletries to an assigned NYC location where we distribute to the homeless. While distributing items, we are able to interact with those in need and spend time talking and getting to know them. The parish is asked to help in this Christian service by donating new and used men's clothing, shoes and sneakers, dark colored backpacks, soft snacks and fruits, juice boxes and toiletries as well as preparing hundreds of bag lunches to be given to the homeless during the run. Help is needed in collecting and sorting donations of clothing and food from 2:30-5:00 p.m. in the Parish Room the day before the Run. Parish members who are interested in actually going on the Run must be available from 6:00 a.m. until approximately 10:00 a.m. on the morning of the breakfast run as well as helping to organize items during the prior day’s collection.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM

Contact: Mary Rose Phone: 779-2374 Email: [email protected] Religious Education at Annunciation-Our Lady of Fatima is available for students in grades 1-8 who do not attend Catholic school. Our program exists to foster spiritual growth and deeper understanding of what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Parents are the first teachers of the Faith, therefore, our catechists work to amplify and support that which is learned at home.

Classes are offered on Wednesdays in Annunciation School from September through May. Religious education is also offered for students with special needs. For those parents who prefer to teach their children at home, we provide support and curriculum materials.

Preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation occurs for all parish students beginning in September. A parish-wide plan of study and prayer which includes special liturgies, parent sessions, retreats and opportunities for service allows our students to approach each sacrament with a more profound understanding of its meaning and importance in their lives.

The Archdiocese of New York has published Guidelines for Catechesis which gives a clear and uniform presentation of the faith for each grade level. These guidelines are implemented in our Religious Education Program at Annunciation-Our Lady of Fatima Parish and Annunciation School.
