R.E.groups into one. What this creates is a run group with more cars in it and, in turn, allows us to increase the track time for everyone. Bang for your buck, you get more track time running with the Oregon region SCCA than any other comparative racing series in the northwest!
Another change for the
season is the racing schedule for our regional weekends. in the past we would typically run a Saturday Practice (am), Qualify (pm) with a sprint race Sunday (am) and main race Sunday (pm). This year we will be running Saturday practice / qualify (am) and full race in the afternoon, rinse and repeat for Sunday.
By making this change we will have two full races during each regional race weekend! More races and race time for everyone this year! Another impact of this would also allow a driver to run a single race, Saturday or Sunday only, for a discount, if they had another commitment during that weekend, like spouses birthday or Wedding. This is a terrific new schedule (thanks Jim Murray!) that gives all rac-ers more options for attending
events and, more importantly, two full races per regional weekend!
in the beginning of the year we ran an online sur-vey through motorsportreg.com. Your feedback from that survey has a direct impact on the focus of the board and we value your time and input. We had almost 50% of our membership respond to our questions and gave some great suggestions as well in the comments section. i have two points from this survey that
i would like to touch upon briefly. One major point that kept coming up was track time. As a fellow racer this was a big one for me as well. As previously stated, with the change in the regional schedule we will all be inherit-ing more track time. if you calculate our cost per minute of track time you will find that you get the biggest bang for your buck compared to other regional series in the Oregon SCCA!
Another note from the
survey was the interest in running a race at OrP this year. Using the survey as a
baseline we had a very positive response from the member-ship of running a race at OrP. There are quite a few of you that have expressly stated they would run an event if we held it there, so in turn, we have scheduled a race in August at OrP.
By running this race we will be eliminating the Octo-ber race this year and will now have our final regional race “Oregon region Champion-ship Weekend” during our September event (with races on Friday, Saturday & Sunday – yep 3 races!).
We will be keeping a close eye on the list of entrants for the OrP event and we look forward to a large turn out that weekend! it should be a fun event that with enough participation we hope to make annually!
We had a challenging
year, financially at least, in 2010 and have made some minor tweeks to reduce our expenses and keep us in the black. Although the Oregon region SCCA is a non-profit organization we really need to look at new ways to increase our car counts and participa-tion in events.
While we have all had some trying economic times over the last few years there are many ways to keep in-volved in racing.

and school race completed we are under way for our 2011 season. Despite mother na-ture’s best attempt to ruin the weekend, with soggy condi-tions to say the least, i found many cheerful faces around the paddock as many of us have been looking forward to breaking out of our winter hibernation and getting back to what we love to do best: racing!
The volunteers are the best in business – the smiles and laughter last weekend from you all can be heard everywhere around the track . The weekend was successful for almost all our school driv-ers with them completing the required training and earning their regional licenses. Con-gratulations to all of you and welcome to the club!
The board has been busy
working towards some chal-lenging goals we have for the year. The first change that i would like to point out is the combination of two run

They did a super job, handling the varying conditions well and engaging in spirited practice and race sessions, with a good deal of passing and pace. Congratulations to them all and welcome to the cast!
For April, we’ve sched-uled our first double regional two-day event. Check out the schedule printed herein or online; you’ll see that both Saturday and Sunday offer stand-alone race opportuni-ties. By the time you read this, you’re probably already entered, unless the car’s still a work in process. Hope we’ll see you out there and we’d like your feedback on the weekend.
looking toward May, the schedule is for a three-day event, our first regional/ra-tional weekend. The ratio-nal, you might remember, is the combined regional and National race. it’s a new idea that is really getting its first test this year. The main idea is to give the regional cars and drivers a second race on the weekend; with a “normal” re-
gional/National weekend, the regional drivers only get one race. in the new deal, we can schedule the same run groups for the rational as for the regional. Hopefully, we get more entries this way. Again, we’ll look for your feedback on this one.
Ever wonder how much it costs to produce a race weekend? The short answer is about $25,000 for a two-day event, and 50% more for a three-day event. The number varies a bit as track rental (the largest single item) varies sea-sonally, but those numbers are close enough. These numbers are pretty well bare-bones. There’s the track rental cost, the ambulance, the tow truck, the sanction and insurance fees to SCCA, and more.
it’s a long list; there are also awards and trophies, and costs for the volunteers. We looked hard at the numbers this year and there’s really nothing to cut. Your entry fees are the main source of support for the club, covering the costs of our race week-ends. We want to keep things affordable, recognizing that this is an expensive sport and
many of our businesses aren’t as strong as in prior years.
On the same subject, ever wonder how many volunteers support these weekends? For March our worker counts were: Friday 44, Saturday 77 and Sunday, 70. These include the ones you see at registra-tion, on corners, in grid, and in paddock; and the ones you don’t, such as timing and scor-ing, race operations, commu-nications, sound monitoring (Hi Sherm) and more. The whole operation is tightly cho-reographed and coordinated by radio communications and, i say, impressive. We owe our sport to the tremendous dedication and goodwill of our volunteers, and they have a superb esprit de corps. Our race budgets also include funding for worker meals and beverages at day’s end; these are primarily, but not entirely, funded by driver donations. Oregon region is very grateful for drivers’ support of our workers, and when you check that box on the entry form, think of the many people who make your race weekends possible.

March 20; around that day, anyway. This year, not so much. Our March event saw the heaviest rain i’ve seen in Oregon; since then i’ve travelled 1,500 miles into Cali-fornia by car and again, driven through some of the rainiest conditions i can remember in the Golden State. So much for getting out of the house and heading south for the weather.
Back to the March race weekend: Our entry count was pretty light again (third straight event with entries well below “normal”, including last September and October). Eleven students earned Novice licenses via our SCCA school. it was a Miata-fest, (no open wheel cars permitted this year, and Miatas dominated the grid), organized by Brian Towey as in recent years and supported by a number of our Spec Miata drivers. Thanks to all of them for their efforts! The Spec Miata cast continues to grow and those of us who are SrFers will have to get a move on, or we’ll become

busy to do the column this month so you get my ram-blings two months in a row.
What’s new? last month i reviewed the changes to the Vintage Competition rules made by National. Those changes are reflected in the region Vintage Supplemental regulations that are posted on the region web site. if you know of someone interested in participating in the Vintage run group please point them there first, you can also give them my name and contact information as i enjoy helping folks prepare themselves and a vehicle for vintage participa-tion.
We update the supple-mental regulations every year. We, being the self-appointed Vintage Committee of Dan Mullin and myself with emeri-tus member Gary Van Horn, Vintage Series Chief Steward Spencer Gorham, road rac-ing Director Jim Murray and for good measure National Director Todd Butler. Once we agree to the regulations they
are reviewed by the NOr-PAC Executive and Deputy Executive Stewards and then submitted to the National SCCA Office.
Certain items come up for discussion every year. A few years back we changed the tire rule to allow formula and sports racers to run on slicks. We do have a concern about closing and corner-ing speeds but there haven’t been any major issues so far. Another item is car eligibility based on age. Also a few years back, we went to a rolling twenty-five year old cut-off. For this year, cars manufac-tured in 1986 or earlier are welcome. Several vintage or-ganizations have a fixed 1972 or earlier limit but we want to provide a venue that allows people to keep their cars on track. As we allow newer cars
the technology and speed differences between cars in the group are magnified. This is why we stress good driver conduct. Just think, in three more years, Miata’s will be eligible for the Vintage run Group.
if you have any thoughts or concerns about the Vintage Supplemental regulations please let any of the folks listed above know. Also new this year is the process for receiving participation flags. To help save a little money (everything counts) and because of fewer volunteers in Driver’s Services, they are no longer handing out flags at the end of the vintage race session. You can still claim a flag for participation but you will need to go to Driver’s Services and request one.
What’s Fast? Not many vintage cars in the monsoon that blew into Pir during the March race. While the vintage group had some dry track time on Saturday the Sunday race was right at the time a nasty storm cell came through. i can’t recall ever seeing the amount of stand-ing water i saw on the track as what the vintage group dealt with that afternoon. it definitely was a hard-core group out for our first event of the year.
Shout Outs. Thanks to Tim Scott, driver of the #94 Datsun for helping out the short-handed tech crew during the March event. Tim usually parks close to the Tech trailer and helps any way he can including weigh-ing cars and offering good advice. Plus, he grills a mean bratwurst.

Mindy's Memorial Weekend Season Opener with Vintage fell in the midst of the wettest month of March in recent decades. But real racers turn left, right, go uphill and downhill, and don't stop for rain.
Group 3 (above) included #73 Peter Juvet who finished third in ITE while #3 Scott Brodie was first in SPM. The group was won by David Cormier in SPO.

The Spec Racer Ford field (center left) was paced by fast qualifiers Chris Jackson #8 and Jim Murray #17. Jack-son, Todd Butler, Murray, and Gary Manchester finished in the top four positions, while Steve Fogg, Johnny Humphreys, Paul Goudy, James Flynn, and Daniel Halloran battled for fifth and sixth. Fogg prevailed for fifth, followed by Goudy, Flynn, Halloran, David Rice, Johnny Humphreys, and Denny Wright.

Wet and Muddy
Wow, what a wet and muddy month it’s been! We generally expect the weather and conditions to be less than ideal for our first rallyCross of the year, but did not expect it to be as bad as it was.
Our first rallyCross was on March 20; for the morning session, we had 70 entrants. That’s a great number of en-trants to have, an astounding number for just one session. Our new registration system worked great. Team Hale did an amazing job creating the program, and getting all the equipment together. registra-tion went faster, and entrants didn’t have much writing to do as we scanned driver’s licenses and printed weekend membership forms and time card labels. randy Hale says that the next step is linking the registration program to a worker list program, which will eliminate half my job right there. it also means the worker lists will be legible for once-- human input will still be needed as jobs need to be assigned, so i’ll still be at the
rallyCrosses working in the registration tent.
i’ve heard that SCCA’s head office is interested in our little timing/scoring/registra-tion experiment out here in Oregon. Extra helpings of kudos to the Hales for being innovators in rallyCross!
The conditions, how-ever, were less helpful. The field was, to put it lightly, a swamp. There were inland seas, complete with seagulls. There were bogs. There were mud monsters, eager to grab hold of people’s cars and not let them go. i have never seen a muddier, slicker, more treacherous field for rally-Cross. The morning session, which started their runs around 9:45, did not get done until after 3:00PM. The wind was bitter and blowing from all directions. The rain was a persistent drizzle punctuated by brief sunbreaks and short periods of the just miserable. Even worse, the morning session was for the All Wheel Drive classes, Stock, Prepared and Modified. They at least had the advantage of all wheel drive, although some cars had just too much horsepower to
be effective. The afternoon session were all 2 wheel drive classes, and a smattering of AWD competitors running Time-Only because they’re gluttons for punishment.
The afternoon session pa-rade lap for front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and a few all wheel drives took 20 minutes. 20 minutes to get around a shortened course, re-worked to avoid the chewed up areas from the morning session. During competition, the times started out at the 2:30 mark or so; at least the competitors got a lot of time for their entry fees….
We were able to complete the afternoon session and close up shop before 7:00pm—and for those of you who decided to withdraw from this event and apply your entry fee to the next event, you may have been the smart ones. At least, you were the dry and warm ones.
No incidents were re-ported, besides several cars getting stuck who had to be pulled out. Oddly enough, most of those were during the morning session.
Special thanks go to the people who pushed cars out of grid, to the start line, out on course, and from the stop line back in to grid. You guys know who you are and you are wonderful.
Our next rallyCross event will be on April 17. We are having some work done to rehab the field before that event, hopefully it will be dry (or more dry, anyway) and not as muddy, and maybe warmer. i could go for a warmer event.
The first Friday Nighter of the season is on April Fool’s Day. i’m working a check-point, so hopefully i will have talked with some of you out there. Or not, depending on if you got lost. The next one after that is May 6, just before Mother’s Day. Bring your Mom, it’ll be a hoot! (Well, it will if you’re my Mom.)
And of course, the first Stage rally of the year here in the PNW is coming up with the Olympus rally on April 30-May 1. The OrG stage crew will be captained by the team of Gloria Hale and rich Olmstead; these two have

extensive knowledge of work-ing stages. Volunteer to work, you’ll be in excellent and well-organized hands with these two. Plus, you’ll have a great adventure!
if driving all the way up to Ocean Shores isn’t your cup of tea but you still want to work a stage rally, try one closer to home: the Oregon Trail rally on May 14-16 needs workers; the furthest you’ll drive is the Dufur area, outside of The Dalles. The closest stages are Friday night at Pir; i’ve heard some inter-esting plans for Friday Night in the form of entertainment in the service area, and pos-sibly carrying that theme over to Saturday’s service area in Dufur.
i’m not going to spill the beans here, at least not yet! Come be a part of one of the best-organized rallies on the national calendar, and the only one currently based in a major metropolitan area! More info can be had from either the event website, www.oregontrailrally.com or www.oregonrally.com; or, email the volunteer coordinators at [email protected] for answers to your question. No prior knowledge is needed to work and no special equip-ment; although, it helps if you have a set of good tires on your car if you are work-ing the forest stages and that your car isn’t too low. Some of those roads can get a bit rough.

Whether it is through sharing a car with a buddy, renting a ride from Pro Drive or our other member partners or bringing the race car out of hibernation and dusting off the cobwebs and getting back out on the track we really would love to have you back. A club is only as strong as its members and while we have seen a decline over the last couple of years in car counts we maintain a strong base. That being said, we need to constantly be looking at ways to bring in new members and this begins with you!
if you know someone who has shown interest in racing let us know and we can work with them in develop-ing a plan to getting them into to racing. Contact Karen or myself with prospective
members and we will reach out to them with some ideas to getting started.

What makes you good?
i recently asked five top solo drivers (from outside Oregon region) to give me an evaluation of their strengths – what makes them good?
i was looking for qualities or skills, but i got something a bit different.
i got a list of things they believe have made them good drivers.
1. Shorten the course. Andy McKee, pilot of one of the fastest cars on DOT legal tires, noted that time can be shaved by driving less dis-tance. “Even when i think i have executed a good run, i can invariable find a few plac-es to be tighter on the cones and take off a little time.”
His point is that we should always be tight on the key cones. Done right, this tweak of the line will not sac-rifice speed and will shorten the course. The result is less time spent between the start lights and finish lights.
2. Trust your car. When i quizzed robert Carpenter, one of the masters of momen-tum cars, he said one of his strengths is just trusting his car.
He says of his 2010 ProSolo Finale victory, “At the Pro, i put some of my best driving out there but the big-gest thing i did is just trust the car.” robert wasn’t worried about grip levels, balance, or whether or not he had the fastest car.
He just trusted what he had and got everything out of it. Said differently, it was time to just drive the car and see what you’ve got.
3. Have a co-driver. Keith Brown has found that having a long term co-driver in a car is a way to improve.
it doubles the amount of seat time at an event for tun-ing the car, sure, but that’s not his point. “Having someone to directly compare with in the same car over a period of time is invaluable.”

4. Take a school. reijo

This is a different spin on one of the advantages of a co-driver – an instructor will see things that you don’t and help you improve. robert Car-penter agrees, “i take a school
almost every year.” robert is an Evolution School instruc-tor, but still believes he can learn from someone else.
5. Work towards the “perfect” run. Bryan Heitkot-ter says his goal isn’t winning. His goal is the perfect run.
in the pursuit of the per-fect run, winning happens. “i suppose the underlying factor
that is behind my develop-ment as a driver is an unre-lenting, obsessive desire for perfection behind the wheel.”
Every event, regional or national, is a race against perfection. Bryan says he’s never had a perfect run so he’s still working on getting better. This approach means that he learns something new every time he gets behind the wheel
and tries to apply this to the next run.
There is an incredible breadth of actions we can take to improve, from the physi-cal action of car placement to the mental approach to a run. This season is young… try one of these out. if it works for these National Champi-ons, it might work for you!

2011 Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Tour Begins
The 2011 Tire rack® SCCA
Solo National Tour officially opened this past weekend, bring-ing 240 competitors to the South Georgia Motorsports Park in Cecil, Ga.
in the B Stock class, where
National Champion Marc Pfan-nenschmidt, of louisville, Ky., drove his 2008 Gods Blessings Honda S2000 to a 0.103-second win over Jadrice Toussaint, of Charlotte, N.C.
At the completion of the six runs in Street Touring r over two days, Chris Harvey, of Osceola, ind., had landed his 2010 Tire rack/Grassroots Motorsports Mazda MX-5 on the top posi-tion with a 0.460-second margin of victory. Geoff Walker, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., finished second in a Honda S2000, fol-lowed by Michael Casino in his 2008 Honda S2000.
Defending Natl. Champ Matthew Braun, of Northville, Mich., held serve with a Su-per Stock class win in his 2007 PowerPlug lotus Elise. Marc Osgood, of Simpsonville, S.C., took the F Street Prepared class win by 0.381-seconds over Jordan, with both driving Jordan’s 1993 SoloPro Driving School/Hoosier Honda Civic.

CALL TO ORDER – Andrew called the meeting to order at 7:10 MEMBER/NEW BUSINESS COMMENTS – Minutes approved M/S (Dan H./Dan O)
Margie reported that she is working on the menus for this year. She still needs an assistant to work with her on the food prep. The van that is currently used for storage is in poor condi-tion. There is need of a trailer or something to store supplies.
COMMITTEE & OFFICIALS REPORTS
REGIONAL OFFICE RE-PORT –Worked 49.5 hours in December.
Road Racing
- Working with Jim Murray on Supplemental Regs, Class Rules, etc, to submit Sanction Request for March School & Regional and the rest of 2011
- Coordinating with our vendors (ambulance, wreckers, security) for 2011
- Set up MotorsportReg.com to accept registrations for March School & Regional
- Compiling road racing survey results
- Organized Annual Tech Day on February 19 at PIR, 10:00-3:00
National Convention - Requesting expense reimburse-ment for the following or any portion thereof: Airfare $229 Hotel $219 Registration $275 Total $723
- Financial Gathering information for our CPA to file 2010 taxes
- Coordinating with Solo & Rally for their year-end informa-tion
- Balance sheets for 2010 will be sent to you by separate email

LOUD PEDAL REPORT – Randy reported that the Jan is-sue is out and with a new format. He is working on the Feb issue now and will use new paper
Bob Brands was in attendance to offer advice and talk about paper selection. He advises against going black & white. The trial paper will not increase the print-ing cost at this time.

Andrew also asked if we might
think of cutting the # of issues. Randy replied that he felt we would lose advertising that we would not recoup later.
The RE requested a summary of the LP costs by Feb and also the need to have concrete deadlines based on the events.
DIRECTOR’S REPORTS
SOLO II REPORT – George presented the Solo Operating Budget for 2011.
The group is trying to hold costs to participants to a minimum.The Solo schedule is up on the website.
George will meet with Dan H. to discuss the possibility of Solo being a part of the Rose Cup Event this year.
Tech and kick off party for Solo will be 2/19 from 12-2 at Sykart.
RALLY REPORT – Budget is almost complete ac-cording to Chris.
The Rally group has 6 Rally X events planned for The WA.
County Fairgrounds. Approval for these is pending. DIRECTOR I REPORT – Kimberly will meet with a representative from Shilo to discuss dates for the end of the year awards banquet.
DIRECTOR II REPORT – Absent
ROAD RACE REPORT – Jim advised that the schedule is ready for our opener. He would like to see and additional 5 or 10 new entries each event this year. There was a discussion as to which group would be the Rose
Festival Race this year and it was decided to go with Spec Miata. M/S (Dan H/Dan M) M/P
PAST REGIONAL EXEC – Dan thanked Andrew for taking hold of the reins this year and said that he is sure it will be a successful venture for him and the region.
Dan said that the plans are in progress for The Rose Cup where we will have participation from the following groups all of which have not been confirmed of this date: Porsche – Pirelli – OMRA – Solo & Rally – Cruise In –Marque Clubs
ASST REGIONAL EXEC - No report
REGIONAL EXEC – Andrew approved Karen’s request for Ntl Convention expenses. He advised that he would be attending but his financial request will be minimal as he will be in the area on busi-ness at that time.
Region dues were discussed and will be visited again in Feb.
