Ask Gary! What is unique about DART’s development of GoPassSM?DART didn’t rush into mobile ticketing. We looked literally around the world for an affordable and versatile technology. We have done extensive testing to ensure the app is as
easy and efficient as possible. Customers can plan trips and buy passes at the same time on their phone. We also considered how to avoid fraud and abuse. As a result, our customers can feel good about both using the app and telling others about it.

North Texas transit customers now can use their smartphones to buy, store and activate passes for travel across Dallas-Fort Worth.
The GoPass mobile ticketing application is the new way to buy passes for DART, the Fort Worth Transportation Authority (The T) and the Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA). The GoPass app – which launched Sept. 16 – is free in Apple’s App Store and the Google Play store.
DART, The T and DCTA estimate that half of their riders use smartphones. After evaluating numerous electric payment systems, the agencies’ staffs determined that a mobile solution was the most versatile approach for giving customers more ways to buy transit passes.
One GoPass user said, “The big benefits are speed and convenience. I may misplace my ticket, but I’d never misplace my phone.”
The Danish firm Unwire won the contract based on its experience overseas with mobile ticketing in large urban markets with multiple agency participants. The North Texas agencies are among the first in the country to offer mobile ticketing and Unwire’s first U.S. client. Since this is a joint effort, the three agencies chose a neutral name for the product: GoPass.

and the GoPass app guides users through the process. Once a rider is registered, it takes a matter of seconds to buy a pass.
Before boarding, customers activate a pass from a digital wallet – even when an active Internet connection is not available. Color coding quickly indicates recent activation or expiration to bus operators or fare inspectors. A countdown timer informs customer when the pass expires and prevents riders from using bogus tickets.
“It’s not the ticketing that makes this interesting,” DART CFO David Leininger said. “It’s the convenience factor.”
Mobile ticketing makes budgeting easier because a customer can purchase a block of passes at once and activate them as needed, for up to 60 days. Riders don’t waste fares when plans change.

Las Colinas APT System Links to Orange LineThe Las Colinas Area Personal Transit System (APT) now connects its automated people mover to DART’s Las Colinas Urban Center Station in Irving. The on-demand, climate-controlled cars operate among four stations in Las Colinas and make getting around the urban center’s restaurants, offices, stores and canals easy and efficient.
Passengers can exit the Orange Line and ascend the staircase or elevator to the APT’s Tower 909 Station to travel to destinations throughout the growing residential and business community.
The free APT service runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. To learn more, visit www.dcurd.org/apt-system.
They can skip lines at the TVM – particularly useful during crowded special events.
“Customers buy passes on their terms, not ours,” DART Chief Marketing Officer Nevin Grinnell said.
Loaded with FeaturesGoPass contains a trip-planning tool powered by Google Transit. Customers can access rider alerts and schedule information, check real-time bus and train arrivals, and find information about transit-accessible activities, events and destinations.
DART riders now transfer easily to the APT System.

Riders of Routes 11, 404 and 486 soon can expect faster trips and nicer stops.
As part of a systemwide effort to enhance bus service, DART evaluated the system’s 12,000 stops for a number of criteria: accessibility, ridership, spacing, amenities and destination.
“We’re trying to make riding public transportation more appealing and convenient,” said Todd Plesko, vice president of service and planning.
DART identified three routes ripe for service enhancement in the form of stop consolidation. Customers, bus operators and veteran transit service planners all weighed in to determine which stops needed to stay … and which could go.
Fewer Stops, Better Service 8 Continued from Front Page
Beginning in August, crews began removing signs in places where a better or more accessible alternative was close by. Where stops are combined, boardings are likely to increase, which will justify more benches, shelters and solar lights.
The agency also is working with city public works departments to improve accessibility with sidewalk improvements, ramps and street repairs. DART will assess the successes and challenges of stop consolidation and evaluate whether to apply the approach to other routes.
“The majority of our ridership is on the bus system,” Plesko said. “We must continually ask whether we are meeting those customers’ needs and taking care of the riders who depend on us most.”

APTA Recognizes Sustainability EffortsThe American Public Transportation Association has recognized DART as a Bronze-level honoree for its high-level achievements in sustainability initiatives. The agency was one of nine public transportation systems and organizations acknowledged at the APTA Sustainability and Public Transportation Workshop in July.
DART accepts an award from the APTA Sustainability Committee and APTA President/CEO Michael Melaniphy.
Since the inception of the APTA Sustainability Commitment in 2009, 110 public transit agencies and businesses have joined as signatories, pledging to implement processes and actions that will lead to improvement on environmental, social and economic sustainability. Only 17 organizations have achieved one of the four higher levels of recognition – Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum – as determined by specific measured achievements.

DART Board Member Randall Chrisman won the 2013 Outstanding Public Transportation Board Member Award from the American Public Transportation Association. This award recognizes an individual serving on the governing board of an APTA public transportation system who has made outstanding contributions to the industry. Called the “best of the best,” APTA Award winners are role models of excellence, leadership and innovation whose accomplishments have greatly advanced public transportation.
Chrisman was appointed to the DART Board in 2002 to represent the cities of Carrollton and Irving and served as chair in 2008 and 2009. In the 11 years since Chrisman joined DART, he has worked on nine different committees. Currently, he chairs the Regional Rail Right-of-Way Board of Directors and the Revenue Committee.
Additionally, he is secretary of APTA’s Transit Board Members Committee, chair of the Transit Board Members Legislative Subcommittee and vice chair of the Authorization Task Force.
“This recognition is a highlight of my board tenure,” Chrisman said. “It’s a privilege to work with so many talented transit professionals and board members in both the DART Service Area and from around the country to deliver the service our customers deserve. I am very appreciative and humbled by this honor.”
Some of the most prominent expansion to the light rail network occurred in large part during Chrisman’s time as chair. He oversaw work on the 28-mile Green Line, the first two sections of the 14-mile Orange Line and a five-mile extension of the Blue Line, which represented

U.S. Rep. Kenny Marchant, R-Texas, has known Chrisman for years through their civic work in Carrollton.
“Randall Chrisman exemplifies the role of concerned citizens involved in government,” Marchant said. “His years of service to his community as a DART board member and board chairman reflect his hard work for Carrollton and public transportation. Congratulations to him on this very well-deserved honor.”
Chrisman is the third DART board member recognized by APTA. Jesse Oliver and Huelon Harrison received the outstanding board member honors in 2001 and 2005, respectively.

DART Board of DirectorsTracking ProgressLancaster Urban Village RevitalizesA block from the Veterans Administration Medical Center and its namesake Blue Line station, construction is underway on a mixed-use, transit-oriented development on Lancaster Road in southern Dallas.
Lancaster Urban Village will include 193 apartments and 14,000 square feet of retail and offices. The 3.5-acre development also comprises a headquarters expansion of the Urban League of Greater Dallas & North Texas, which will be used for workforce training and services.
The $30 million project – scheduled to open in 2014 – will provide affordable housing and retail services in a pedestrian-friendly setting. The Dallas VA Medical Center employs 3,000 workers and records thousands of annual patient visits, providing a substantial economic base.
