SYMANTEC VISION 2013
v7.1 Components & Scale
• Symantec Management Platform
– 20,000 managed nodes per client-facing SMP
• Hierarchy
– support for 120,000 managed nodes
– 1 Parent SMP + 6 Child SMPs @ 20,000 managed nodes (Parent should not manage any
nodes)
– Support for Additional 20,000 mobile devices + all fixed assets (Mobile + Fixed Assets
on parent)
• Console Usage
– 125 concurrent console users (CMS/SMS/MMS)
– 25 concurrent console users (AMS)
UP B21 - "Upgrading from Altiris 6.x to 7.x" 6
SYMANTEC VISION 2013
v7.1 Components & Scale
• Site Servers (Middleware Services)
– Package Services
• 500+ Package Services per SMP / up to 3,000 PS in a hierarchy
• 10,000 nodes per Package Service
– Task Services
• 500+ Task Services per SMP / up to 3,000 TS in a hierarchy
• 7,500 nodes per Task Service
– Deployment Services¥
• 500 Deployment Services per SMP / up to 3,000 DS in a hierarchy
• 7,500 nodes per Deployment Service
UP B21 - "Upgrading from Altiris 6.x to 7.x" 7
¥ - TS & PS are required wherever DS is installed with v7.1
SYMANTEC VISION 2013
Scale Categories in v7.1 - Where does my company fit?
• Category 0 - < 500 Nodes (Pilot or Lab environment)
• Category 1 - ~501 - ~1,000
• Category 2 - ~1,001 - ~5,000
• Category 3 - ~5,001 - ~10,000
• Category 4 - ~10,001 - ~20,000*
• Category 5 - ~20,001 – 120,000
• Category 6 - > 120,000Ŧ
* - Recommended SMP configurations differ 10k-15k and 15k-20k
UP B21 - "Upgrading from Altiris 6.x to 7.x" 8
Ŧ - Requires multiple hierarchies

SYMANTEC VISION 2013
Implementing in a Virtual Environment
• Can any of the hardware be virtual?
– Yes. All components can be virtualized, if desired
• CPU / RAM resource reservations strongly recommended for major components
• Ease of Virtualization / Reservation
1. Site Servers - No reservation
2. Workflow - 25% reservation
3. SMP w/o Hierarchy – 50% reservation
4. Child SMP - 50% reservation
5. ServiceDesk - 50% reservation
6. Parent SMP - 75% reservation
7. SQL Server – 75% – 100% reservation
• Physical Disk vs. Virtual Disk
– VMDK / VHD required ~20% additional disk I/O
UP B21 - "Upgrading from Altiris 6.x to 7.x" 11
SYMANTEC VISION 2013
SQL Best Practices & Tuning
• TempDB
– Separate Physical Disk (Windows OS)
– Split into multiple data files (cores / 4)
– 2GB size multiples / growth by 2GB
• Database
– Separate Physical Disk (Windows OS)
– 6-10mb per machine + 1-2mb per asset per year
• SQL Logs
– Separate Physical Disk (Windows OS)
– Simple Recovery Model
– Backup/flush daily at a minimum
UP B21 - "Upgrading from Altiris 6.x to 7.x" 12
• SQL Engine
– Maximum Degree of Parallelism =
• 1 for dedicated SQL
• 8 for shared SQL (Non Symantec DBs)
– Cost Threshold for Parallelism = 100+
• if MaxDOP > 1
– Parent CMDB should never share SQL instance with Child CMDB
– No more than 4 Child CMDBs sharing an instance

Migration Steps
UP B21 - "Upgrading from Altiris 6.x to 7.x" 13
SYMANTEC VISION 2013
NS 6 to SMP 7.1 Migration Description Metric
Installation of parent SMP Successful installation of the SMP
Installation of site server Deployment and configuration of site servers
Upgrade 7.0 database (if desired) Upgrade 7.0 database for 7.1 parent SMP. If desired, but not recommended as CMDB is not clean.
Migration of 6.x data (if desired) Migration of any remaining 6.x data required using the Migration Wizard
Installation of child SMP Successful installation of one or all child servers
Installation of site servers (datacenter) attached to each child SMP server
Deployment and configuration of site servers
Installation of Agent / Pilot Deployment of agents to representative group of each Windows Server 2003, XP, 7, 2008 and Unix. Identify action plan and steps to deploy/test to remaining systems.
Monitor Agent Health Review logs and monitor agent activity
Define hierarchy and replication Define and configure all of policies and packages for replication. Minimize components replicated and part of hierarchy.
Configure hierarchy and replication Validate successful replication of defined policies and all packages for replication
Active Directory integration Completed a synch of AD and note ability to filter on AD information

SYMANTEC VISION 2013
Solution Configuration / Implementation Steps
Define Inventory policies Successfully defined per platform and type.
Configure Software Management and Deploy Agent
Import Package MSI/EXE and define rules where possible. -Some legacy packages can be migrated using the Migration Toolkit
Deploy Patch Management and Agent
Ensure the following are defined as per policy · User Notifications · Reboots and Reboot suppression · Staging and Enabling of Patches · Monitoring Patch Progress / Automation Rules and Notifications
Asset & Contract Management*** Requires migration of database using migration wizard unless implemented as new installation.

Description Metric
Configure maintenance windows Installation time and suppression capabilities
Test maintenance windows Success across all platforms
Reporting Review out-of-box reports to determine compliance and accuracy
