The hearth of the home, a fi re-place draws people in with its cozy crackle and warmth. What’s often overlooked is how it also draws the eye. It is frequently centered on a wall and is the object around which a room is oriented. This ready-
made focal point is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to put your personality and style on view, via family photos, trea-sured objects or seasonal blooms.
That’s why Michelle Miller, an interior designer in Baltimore, likes to keep
permanent accents simple — the better to showcase rotating displays. She recom-mends building a look around a refi ned mirror, a great piece of art or even a sculptural log holder. “Find one great piece as opposed to 20 great pieces,” she says. Then, when you add decorations, she says to keep them asymmetrically displayed, because the fi replace is already the symmetrical focus of the room.
Though a decorator’s dream, fi replaces are primarily functional, and for that reason, we also asked Miles Elliot, the product manager for wood-burning products at Plow & Hearth in Madison, Virginia, what every serious fi re builder needs in his or her tool kit.

It is OK if you are a little late; they will forgive you. Remove any twigs and stems that are dead, diseased, injured or spindly. Then
bring the height of the main stems down by at least a third. This hard pruning improves the shape of the shrub and improves air circulation and light penetra-tion into the plant. Beautiful rose fl owers will follow in eight to nine weeks. The next time your roses will need a good pruning will be around Labor Day. I really like the farm-house-style kitchen sinks, but I don’t want to spend extra money just for good looks. Are there any practical advantages as well with a farmhouse kitchen sink over a standard kitchen sink?

A: Farmhouse-style (or apron-front) kitchen
sinks date way back to when plumbing was young. I bring this point up because they were originally designed as heavy-duty work sinks. So, don’t let the classic good looks fool you. Like the name says, farmhouse sinks can easily handle all your kitchen chores
until the cows come home.
Because the apron-front design creates a large bowl, farmhouse sinks
usually can fi t oversized cookware like cookie sheets as well. Speaking of bowl design, the traditional farmhouse design is with a deep, single bowl, but double-bowl types are available. Farmhouse sinks also can be ergonomically friendly to work with since the bowls are positioned farther forward than standard drop-in kitchen sinks.
Now that you know the work advantages with this type of sink, let’s get into design. Farmhouse sinks come in a wide selection of materials, textures and colors, so trying to pick just one out may be the hardest work you’ll do with your new kitchen sink.

and, in some cases, even brown. It also is normal to long for warm days and green grass. Late Febru-ary is an appropriate time to control weeds with a pre-emergent herbicide. But February and early March are not the months to put down a nitrogen fertilizer in North Central Florida. In the late winter, our grass is not actively growing, and it doesn’t have deep roots to absorb the nitrogen. For this reason, UF/IFAS doesn’t recommend the use of nitrogen until April. If you are having trouble with
weeds, you can use a selective herbicide that is safe for your type of grass, and then in April choose a fertilizer with an analysis like 15-0-15. For more information on weed control and fertiliz-ing your turf, visit the UF/

Q: I purchased a few beautiful potted
geraniums. Can I plant them in the landscape?
A: Geraniums are so brightly colored and
attractive, it is hard to resist buying them. They look great in containers by themselves or mixed with other plants.
In Florida, they are not easy to grow in the landscape. They cannot go through freezing temperatures, and they will not tolerate our summer heat and humid-ity. They perform best during the spring and the fall. You can grow them as a short-lived annual from March to May and from October to December in North Central Florida. Geraniums grow best in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. Remove old fl owers to keep new ones coming. Geraniums prefer well-drained soils. Work a 3- to 4-inch layer of organic matter such as compost or peat moss into the soil when planting in a landscape bed. It is better to grow them in contain-ers or hanging baskets where you can control the temperature, humidity and the amount of irrigation they get. Use slow-release fertilizer to keep them thriving for the time you do have to enjoy their blooms.
Geraniums grow well in pots and planters with adequate drainage. Mulch will help retain moisture and prevent weed growth.

A recent study released by the Service Contract Industry Council (SCIC) has found that homes coveredby a protection plan sell faster and for more money than those without one. According to SCIC’s mostrecent look at home sale prices nationally, homes sold with a protection plan spend, on average, 11fewer days on the market. SCIC’s findings also show that homes on average sold for about $2,300more when covered by a plan. The ability to transfer a home warranty to new owners also helps createadded incentives for buyers. Because home warranties can be transferred to the new owner, buyersare finding that the extra protection of a service contract can ease this apprehension. basic design as the larger lamp for the base. These were bought at an auction, so I am not sure of the history. Any information you can give me as to the value, age or where I can get it appraised and, possibly, where I can sell them will be appreciated.

Q: The president of my homeowners associa-
tion is having weep holes drilled in our structure right at the brick ledge area of the slab.
I am worried about insects/termites getting in.
Should we put hemp or cotton rope in the holes?
A: Weep holes are designed to be
installed as the fi rst few rows of masonry (in your case, bricks) are installed. The purpose is to provide drain openings to release any water that becomes trapped between the backside of the masonry and the exterior wall of the structure. This is referred to as the “drain-age plane.”
In order for the weep holes to work as designed, there needs to be a row of L-shaped fl ashing material
attached to the structure’s wall with the bottom edge of the “L” inserted into the mortar joint of the masonry. The fl ashing should be inserted in the mortar joint just below the weep holes. When water enters the masonry and runs down the drainage plane, it is trapped by the fl ashing and forced out through the weep holes.
Drilling holes without the fl ashing materials
may help, but most likely will not. As you suggest-ed, small sections of a cotton rope or similar material inserted into the weep holes can be used to help prevent pest entry.
Weep holes, wicks and vents should not be under the soils next to the foundation or under landscaping materials used in decorations. Plants and shrubs should not affect how the weep holes function. Weep holes are not associated with termite infestation.
