FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: REATHA ALBERT “Ms.!Reatha,”!as!affecconately!known!by!countless!Blue!Gators,!has!been!working!at!Ascension!for!31!years.!She!serves!as!Administracve!Assistant,!and!although!her!office!is!located!on!the!Downtown!Campus,!she!provides!support!to!all!three!of!our!campuses.!A!nacve!of!DeRidder,!LA,!she!loves!the!camaraderie!among!Ascension!faculty!and!staff,!saying,!“It!is!a!family!feeling.!I!love!being!of!assistance!when!a!need!arises.”!
Outside!of!school,!she!enjoys!lighthearted!movies!and!reading!spiritual,!biographical,!and!light!mystery!ficcon!books.!She!is!also!accvely!involved!at!First!Bapcst!Church!and!loves!playing!tennis!and!Mexican!Train,!as!well!as!doing!crossword!puzzles.!

Design Thinking and Music: A Perfect Harmony by Alayna Dugas and Kaedron Hall
For!those!of!you!who!do!not!know!us,!Mr.!Hall!and!I!are!the!chorus!and!strings!teachers!on!the!Downtown!Campus.!When!Ascension!faculty!took!a!Design!Thinking!workshop!this!summer,!the!music!department!realized!we!have!a!unique!opportunity!to!reshape!the!
direccon!we!take!moving!forward!with!Design!Thinking!in!our!program.!!Mr.!Hall!and!I!had!an!“Aha!”!moment!in!which!we!realized!the!journey!a!musician!takes!in!learning!to!play!or!
write!a!piece!of!music!is!tantamount!to!the!design!process,!the!parts!simply!go!by!different!names.!Design!Thinking!begins!with!empathy,!the!ability!to!understand!the!feelings!of!
another,!and!ends!with!tescng!your!product.!The!best!definicon!of!music!I!have!heard!is!!!“Music!is!what!feelings!sound!like.”!So!many!pieces!of!music!are!borne!out!of!a!human!experience!and!empathecc!desire!to!represent!a!person!or!group!of!people!through!
sound.!Musicians!spend!countless!hours!pracccing,!iteracng,!prototyping,!only!to!scrap!it!and!start!over,!to!finally!tescng!their!product!with!a!concert,!a!recording,!an!album!
release,!or!movie!screening.!!!!So!much!of!the!creacve!process!of!music!has!gone!digital,!with!the!highest!paid!DJ!topping!Forbes!at!$63!million!in!earnings.!Mr.!Hall!and!I!want!to!create!spaces!that!

GATOR GAB: What does the Kindness Project mean to you?
SMP COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY by Maddie Blackstone On!September!23,!2016,!Ascension!had!its!first!community!service!day!of!the!year!!Members!from!each!grade!got!out!in!the!community!to!make!a!difference!in!people’s!lives.!Freshmen!went!to!St.!Joseph’s!Diner!to!hand!out!free!meals!to!those!who!are!homeless!or!have!no!access!to!food.!The!diner!can!only!take!10!students!at!a!cme,!so!half!went!to!help!with!breakfast!and!the!rest!helped!with!lunch.!Sophomores!went!to!Camelot!of!Broussard!nursing!home!to!visit!the!elderly!and!play!Bingo!with!them.!Some!of!the!people!there!are!alone!all!day,!so!students!were!able!to!share!a!smile!with!them!and!make!their!day.!Juniors!took!part!in!Project!Front!Yard!to!help!with!the!medians!on!Louisiana!Ave.!They!helped!by!weeding!and!adding!mulch!to!all!the!beds.!KLFY!News!even!showed!up!to!video!the!students!helping!out!and!interviewed!a!couple!teachers!and!students.!Alexis!Cortez!said,!“By!beaucfying!the!community,!it!welcomes!more!people!to!what!a!beaucful!culture!we!have,”!Lastly,!Seniors!helped!with!Habitat!for!Humanity.!Their!mission!is!to!help!build!houses!for!needy!people.!With!the!big!flood!occurring!earlier!in!the!school!year,!there!are!plenty!of!people!who!need!help!tearing!down!their!damaged!homes!and!starcng!over.!Our!school’s!statement!this!year!is!“Project!Kindness”!and!so!far!we!are!off!to!a!great!start!with!many!more!service!days!coming!up!soon.!
