drains joy from the life we live now? Instead, let’s assess what we have, work to change what we’re able to change,
and then look forward with humor, good will, and even anticipation.

Voyage to Sicily: A Journey of Discovery From $3,895 (Land Only)
SP4875 – May 7 – May 18, 2014 – 12 days
“To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not having seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the key to everything.” Sicily -
theatre of lights and winds, of epic battles and sublime architecture; the southernmost bridge to Africa; and indulgent cradle
for different civilizations. The sun kisses the blazing sands and the low cliffs; the sky is tinged with strong colors, especially
at sunset; the sandy, golden beaches dance with the bright, blue sea; silver olive trees mix together with palms; everything
invites you to enjoy life, experience nature and revel in a rich and extraordinarily diverse past. Lying as it does between
Europe and Africa, Sicily, the oft-called “melting pot of the ancient world,” has been touched, changed and marked by a
myriad of cultures - first the Greeks and the Romans, then the Arabs and Normans, and finally, the French, Spanish and
Italians, all of them contributing to an unparalleled historical legacy. Nature and history have combined to give Sicily its
most striking feature: impressive monuments of the past set against backgrounds of astonishing natural beauty. On this
excursion, the treasures of Palermo, Erice, Cefalú, Monreale, Selinunte, Taormina, Modica, Ragusa Ilba, Noto, Catania and
Syracusa will all be explored.

From the Industrial Revolution to the Ghost in in the Machine__________________________ $15
HCS069 Thursday, September 5 from 9:30am – 11:00pm (1.5 hours)
What would Alexander Graham Bell think? Could Samuel F.B. Morse even imagine how the telegraph has
morphed? Communication improvements during the Industrial Revolution meant that some craftspeople were replaced by
machines. Take the leap from the era of the Industrial Revolution into the Technology Revolution where we are
today. Better? To be considered. When does a cuddly dog-robot turn into a puppy? When will humanoid machines achieve
consciousness, or even souls?? This lecture explores the potentially dangerous impact of technological communication on
human emotions, especially the cuddly or intelligent "sociable" robots. Instructor: Dr. Sharon Whitehill

HCS071 Thursday, November 7 from 9:30am – 11:00pm (1.5 hours)
Today eight indigenous tribes are officially recognized in Panama, representing about ten percent of the country's population.
Given its limited geography, it is remarkable that these tribes have been able to sustain a traditional life style. The
experiences of visitors on Panama tours are enriched by observing the traditional lifestyle of the indigenous populations in
different areas of the country. For four months, while living aboard our sailboat, we had the pleasure of spending time with
some of these tribes. Share our adventure in stories, pictures and artifacts. Instructors: Mr. and Mrs. Linehan
