Dear Families of Immaculate Heart of Mary, Today, Palm Sunday, we hear the reading of the Passion. Jesus enters into Jerusalem where people greet him with shouts of “Hosanna “, proclaiming that he is coming in the name of the Lord. They look at him as more of an exalted king than as the humble savior that he was. Jesus’ last word to his disciples before the beginning of the Passion narrative is “Watch”, urging them to be attentive and stay alert. In his gospel, Mark relates the events of the last week of Jesus’ life: John’s arrest, the chief priests and scribes plotting to destroy Jesus, Judas’ betrayal, the Passover meal where Jesus gives the gift of himself to his disciples, the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter ‘s denial of Jesus, Jesus’ arrest and trial where he confirms that he is “ the Christ, Son of the Blessed One, and Son of Man”, Jesus proclaimed guilty and condemned to death, mocked, scourged, crowned with thorns, led away to his death by crucifixion and ,finally, his burial in the tomb. Just as Jesus told his disciples to “Watch”, he urges all of us, as we hear again the account of his Passion and Death, to be attentive to the story of his suffering for us. This week we celebrate Holy Thursday on March 29 with Mass (bilingual) at 7:00 PM. Good Friday Services are at 12:00 (English) and 3:00 (English). Live Stations will be at 5:00, followed by a bilingual Passion Service at 6:00 PM. The March 31 Easter Vigil will be celebrated with a bilingual Mass at 8:00 PM. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, days before he was crucified. Palm Sunday is known as such because the faithful will often receive palm fronds which they use to participate in the reenactment of Christ's arrival in Jerusalem. In the Gospels, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a young donkey, and to the lavish praise of the townspeople who threw clothes, or possibly palms or small branches, in front of him as a sign of homage. This was a customary practice for people of great respect. Palm branches are widely recognized symbol of peace and victory, hence their preferred use on Palm Sunday. The use of a donkey instead of a horse is highly symbolic, it represents the humble arrival of someone in peace, as opposed to arriving on a steed in war. A week later, Christ would rise from the dead on the first Easter. During Palm Sunday Mass, palms are distributed to parishioners who carry them in a ritual procession into church. The palms are blessed and many people will fashion them into small crosses or other items of personal devotion. These may be returned to the church, or kept for the year. Because the palms are blessed, they may not be discarded as trash. Instead, they are appropriately gathered at the church and incinerated to create the ashes that will be used in the follow year's Ash Wednesday observance.
