COVID19 - As many events, programs and practices are suspended or shut down over this developing emergency,
I wanted to focus on the issues around work for students.
Staff are meeting this afternoon in stages to develop
work to support students in the probable closure of
schools.
Like a lot of schools we are unsure how this will look due to ‘unknowables’ such as the length of any shut down,
the reliability of networks and developing protocols for communication between all stakeholders. We also need to consider learning styles, rates of work and how planned work reflects outcomes from the national
curriculum and what is age appropriate and viable to complete remotely.
Staff will look at online resources, placement of work on
line and ‘hard copy’ resourcing. Suggestions may be made in relation to good practices, such as educational
programs, reading, generally (and widely), journal
keeping for reflection etc., that will support all facets of
our current curriculum.
All of this is intended to supplement the work we do at
school so staff planning and teaching is as close to normal as possible upon everyone’s return. It is important to
remember that remote work materials do not equate to explicit quality teaching.
As you can understand the planning of work for four different stages and 390 + students is complex and
challenging but we will do our best to ensure students have content appropriate work to complete and ideas to occupy their time.
Absences - Can I remind parents that if your child is sick,
it is advisable that they do not come to school. Sniffles, coughs or general feelings of illness, in the current climate, may produce anxiety in others or spread illness
further.
A reminder too, that when we receive updated advice
from relevant authorities, we will pass this on
immediately.
A reminder that we have several students who are
anaphylactic or have severe allergies to nuts or nut
products, please be mindful when packing lunch for your child.

BAND NEWS
Hi everyone! Apologies that there was no update in the previous newsletter. I am now safely home and will be in isolation for 14 days. Flute lessons will continue to be covered by the tutor as has been while I've been away. Edward will continue to cover training band. And obviously the school will continue to update us if there are any changes to our program. Please do not send your child to a music lesson/rehearsal if they are unwell in any form. Remember that in these times of uncertainty and stress, music can be a wonderful way to find peace and solace - as well as a chance to have fun and to maintain a sense of normalcy and routine. So encourage your child to continue practicing and improving. Meanwhile - here are some notes from Edward to give some insight as to what could be worked on:
Training Band:
· Revise all of lesson 1 - even if you think it's too easy! Focus on playing the most beautiful sound that you can manage, in the most beautiful way (that means sitting up nice and tall, legs uncrossed) · Focus on lesson 2, especially the last songs on the page/ in the lesson. Number 5 and 6 are good ones to play a lot as they combine many things we have learned so far (many rhythms, many notes!) · If you are feeling confident about playing the material in lessons 1 and 2, go on and look at lesson 3 - for many instruments there is a new note! Practise playing the new note and practise reading what it looks like written on the page.
Intermediate Band:
25 or 6 to 4: · Focus on bars 25 to 35 - steady practice working on notes and rhythms. · Dynamics - section starting at bar 9 (verse) needs to be softer than the beginning (intro) and the section starting at bar 25 (chorus) · Don't forget to mark in the repeat between bar 34 and bar 9
Music Music Music: · Tidy up the middle section (starting at bar 21) · We're going to add our own dynamics in so be extra sure of notes and rests for when we do
Concert Band:
Enter Sandman: · Go over our work on the first 20 bars, keep counting out the syncopated rhythms with 1 AND 2 AND etc. rather than just count 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. · Look ahead to the notes/rhythms at the section starting bar 21 (chorus) - this will be our focus at future rehearsals
Domino: · We need to balance out the band so we can always hear the melody. This means we have to hear the saxes from bar 9, and hear the flutes + clarinets from bar 17. · The chorus (section starting bar 25) is quite tricky for a lot of parts - flutes/trumpets especially go slowly through those rhythms as you have the melody line · If you're feeling confident with the first half of the piece, look ahead to the section starting at bar 47, learn notes and rhythms · Make sure you have the repeats and D.S. al coda marked in your parts
