THE ECOKITAN ECODESIGN PROJECT
WHAT DOES ECODESIGN STAND FOR ?
Renan Abgrall- 11 2011
2
Ecodesign is an approach to design a product with special consideration
for the environmental impacts of the product during its whole lifecycle
The two main principles of Life Cycle Assessment method
Assess the whole product life cycle
Assess several environmental impacts
Customer needs
Costs
Technical feasibility
Environment Ecodesign
A METHOD INITIALLY APPLIED TO MOBILE EQUIPMENTS
Renan Abgrall- 11 20113
2008
• Life Cycle Assessment analysis done by Ademe(French Environment and Energy Management Agency )
• Focus on the manufacturing stage (Green handset)
• Focus on the “End of life”
• Commercial launch of the Nokia Evolve (first green mobile)
2009
• A packaged offer for B2B customers• Another green product (Samsung)
• A cheaper subscription for customers extending the life of their handset
• Cheaper international calls (reduce business trips ?)
• A universal solar charger for free
• Carbon compensation for emission of gases
2010
• Handsets recycling via MonexTel Partner• For B2C then B2B
• Via internet then in Point Of Sales
• Promote the “SIM only” Subscriptions
For Mobile Equipments,
1. the effort needs to remain focus on end of life management
2. but operators select handsets that suit with market expectations
=> currently massively focusing on Smartphones

FOCUS ON SIM CARDS
Analysis made by Codde
With the support of Bouygues Telecom and a SIM provider
The SIM ecodesign project started in 2008 through two approaches
• The production of a « greener » SIM card
• Analysing the current standard SIM card (made with ABS)
• Analysing two alternatives
• The Bio SIM card alternative
(Change of materials : ABS replaced by PLA or PET/PETG)
• The Eco SIM card initiative
Modification of the production line by recycling directly
half of the body hat is not used
• The production of a « greener » packaging
• Analysing the current solution
Multiple kits for acquisition and after sales
Based on a standard large DVD format full of brochures
• The ecoKit alternative
(Producing guidelines to redesign the packaging)
THE PRINCIPLES WE LEARNED
Renan Abgrall- 11 20115
Current SIM Card
SIM card in first green material
SIM card in second green material (corn)
1. If we choose a material for its recycling
features, let’s assure that you can redirect it
into the correct recycling line.
2. When you choose a greener material, let’s
ensure that the global footprint for the
production of the product is better (energy
needs, and impact on agricultural crop).
3. If you chose a green material, do ensure
that its production is not going to compete
with food oriented agricultural crop.
4. Try to reduce the quantity of produced
material.
5. Try to reused as much as possible recycled
material.

THE GOOD NEWS CAME FROM THE PACKAGING
Renan Abgrall- 11 20116
• The brochure was mainly responsible of the impact
• 112g responsible of 61% of the mass responsible for 70% of the impact
• In a digital communication context aiming to simplify the messages and redirecting as
much as possible to internet
• The recommendations
• Lower the mass of the box
• Reduce as much as possible the number of brochures
• Use as much as possible recycled materials
• Optimise the logistical scheme and avoid multiplication of references

WHAT WE HAVE DONE FIRST
• Reduce the references of SIM cards to be
able to reduce the references of packages
for any renewal action
• Change the format of the after sales kit to
achieve a compact one
• Sustainable dvpt benefits
• Communication benefits
• Commercial benefits (avoid shortage of supply by
reducing references, Save space in shops)
• Logistical benefits
• Future proof (deployment of new SIMs for Apple)Renan Abgrall- 11 2011

2011
WHAT WE HAVE DONE IN SECOND
• Redesign all our kits for acquisition
(reconsider the manufacturing process)
• Reduce to the maximum the communication
to simplify the welcome stage of the
customer
• Target a packaging that suits with mailing
• Less kits
• Smaller kits
• Simpler kits
• Cheaper kits
1 200 000 €
cost saving
per year

ECO DESIGN CAN ALSO BE APPLIED TO SHOPS
CONNECT: an eco design concept

AND NEW PROJECTS
The bbox (Set top box and internet)
Reduction of energy consumption:
- Product manufacturing
- Sleep mode management
Increase of product life duration :
Second life management of Bboxes with upgradeable software plus refurbishing
initiatives.
Material selection
Material that can be recycled (ex. Bbox body)
Recycled material. (for the packaging)
