Tony McEvoy says it is immeasurable
what champion mare Sunlight
(Zoustar) has done for his training
business while her breeder believes
the three-time Group 1-winning sprinter
would be worthy of becoming a foundation
broodmare on any farm in the world.
The glowing endorsement of Sunlight came
after the decision was made by connections to this
week retire the four-year-old from racing and put
the highly sought after mare up for auction at July’s
Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare
Sale, the same ring she was sold out of as a yearling.
A winner of 11 of her 24 starts and more than
$6.5 million in prize-money, Sunlight bows out
having won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL,
1200m), the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered
as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m), Newmarket
Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) and William Reid Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m). Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Cummings: Kementari ready to win againGodolphin Australia head trainer James
Cummings has made a strong case for
Kementari (Lonhro) to gain his first win in two
years at Eagle Farm tomorrow. The gelding
heads the weights for the Victory Stakes (Gr
2, 1200m) which will be his lead-up for the
Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) two weeks
later. “We’ve forged ahead with the horse and I
think he can win,” Cummings said. “On paper
his last run wasn’t hard to forgive. He missed
the start, made a long run and was giving
away plenty of weight to the winner. While it
may be thought that he’s looking for longer,
this is a good stepping stone to the Stradbroke
where he’s got 55.5 kilograms and he can’t get
a penalty for winning it.” Ryan Maloney will
ride Kementari and will retain the ride in the
Stradbroke. Morning Briefing page 8 >>

She also ran third in the 2018 Golden
Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m), the 2019 T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and the
A J Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) as well as finishing runner-up in the $7.5
million Golden Eagle (1500m) last November.
McEvoy, who was joined by son Calvin in training Sunlight this season,
prepared the mare on behalf of an all-women’s syndicate that includes his
business partner Wayne Mitchell’s wife Irene, Aquis Farm’s Loretta Fung
and Widden Stud’s Katie Thompson.
The dual-state trainer yesterday said that Sunlight, who was unplaced
in the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and The Goodwood (Gr 1,
1200m) earlier this month, was deserving of all the accolades she would
receive upon her retirement.
“It’s the end of a road, but it’s been a very good road for us. She’s been
an absolute privilege to have in our stable and she gave us a magnificent
ride,” McEvoy said.
“She was an elite racehorse
and those horses who get to that
level, like anyone in life, if you are
an elite businessperson or an elite
sportsperson, you have got to have
soundness, you have got to be
tough and you have got to be good
and she had all of those things.
“It is incredibly hard to
measure what she’s done for us,
but she has led from the front
and she’s done amazing things
for our business. She’s going to be
incredibly hard to replace.”
Widden Stud’s Antony
Thompson, who co-bred Sunlight,
said the mare was “a true queen
physically” who would command the attention of all the major breeders.
“She’s a stunning individual and she’s got a great pedigree that will
attract everyone from around the world,” Thompson said.
“Her brilliant speed is something that really stands out and puts her
up there on the most desirable mares to add to your broodmare band. You
can’t replicate that sort of speed and it’s so hard to come by. She was an
early two-year-old who returned as a three-year-old to be a champion filly
and she was also able to beat older horses.
“That is a rare achievement for a three-year-old filly, to win a
Newmarket. That’s only happened a handful of times in the history of
the race and that really tells you she is that sort of mare who can be a
foundation mare for any farm around the world.”
Sunlight, who won five of her eight starts as a juvenile, also played
a pivotal role in her Widden Stud-based sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor)
taking out the coveted champion first season sire title in 2017-18 and
catapulted him into one of the most commercial young stallions in the
three seasons since she started racing in October, 2017.
Thompson described Sunlight’s victory in the 2018 Magic Millions as
an “incredible feat” that was borne out of a plan

hatched nearly four years earlier when
a syndicate went about sourcing high-class mares for Zoustar’s maiden
season at stud.
Sunlight is a daughter of dual Group 3 winner Solar Charged (Charge
Forward), who was specifically purchased at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold
Coast National Sale to go to Zoustar. She made $650,000 that year.
“We bought Solar Charged there to go to Zoustar in his first crop and
planned that mating with David Redvers, Qatar Racing and Dan Fletcher
of Telemon Thoroughbreds who has also got a share in Solar Charged,”
Thompson said.
“This was the mare and the mating that we thought would give
Zoustar an early runner, so we went out and bought Solar Charged for a
lot of money at the Magic Millions mares’ sale.
“We took that filly back to Magics with the intention of trying to get her
to win the Magic Millions and for her to do that was an incredible feat and
one of our proudest moments.
“To see her go on from there, run so well in the Golden Slipper and
give us so many other great thrills including in Zoustar’s trifecta of the
Coolmore and when she beat the older horses in a Newmarket - that’s one
for the ages.
“She’s been a life-changer for everyone involved and she is very, very
special.”
McEvoy combined with Aquis Farm and Blue Sky Bloodstock to
purchase Sunlight for $300,000 at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale in
2017 before paying double that in conjunction with David Redvers a year
later for her younger sibling, the subsequent Group 3-winning filly Sisstar
(Zoustar).
McEvoy was, of course, also a big believer in Sunlight’s credentials as
a broodmare prospect.
“She has got the package. She has got a great temperament; she has
got great purpose; she has great depth and is built to be an incredible
mother,” he said.

“She will throw champions to come,
I’m sure.”
Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch was delighted
that the company would be able to play its part in Sunlight, “a great
ambassador” for the auction house, completing a full circle by returning
to the Gold Coast for the scheduled July 20 to 24 sale.
“We’ve had conversations with the ownership group in recent times
and obviously they are great clients of ours, from Tony McEvoy’s team
through to the owners and the breeders Antony Thompson and Dan
Fletcher as well, so I am pleased that we will be able to sell her one more
time,” Bowditch said.
“This sale has proven that all the big international players take notice
and we’ll be engaging with buyers from all over the world as well as
domestically about a mare of Sunlight’s quality.”
The addition of Sunlight to the Magic Millions National Sale, which
was initially slated to start with a weanling session this week before the
onset of Covid-19 shut down the economy and forced the three-week
event to be pushed back, follows on from the recent confirmation that
fellow Group 1-winning mare Viddora (I Am Invincible) would be offered
at the Gold Coast in foal to Lope De Vega (Shamardal).
Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Unforgotten (Fastnet Rock),
who will be offered under the Blue Sky Premium Consignment on behalf
of her owners, is also catalogued.
In the past, Magic Millions has sold Group 1 winner Bounding
(Lonhro) at the National Sale for $1.9 million to US interests while her
mother Believe’n’succeed (Exceed And Excel) was bought by Coolmore’s
Tom Magnier for $1.1 million in 2014.
Believe’n’succeed is now the dam of Anthony Van Dyck (Galileo),
who won the Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) last year, while Bounding’s first
foal - now named Aussie Pride (Curlin) - made US$4.1 million (AUD$6.25
million) at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale when bought by
Godolphin.
Bowditch is confident that the leading international investors would
again be paying close attention to this year’s Magic Millions catalogue
given the impact Australasian mares had been having on world bloodlines
in recent times.
“You only have to look at the buying bench that turns up each
year, but having the results with Bounding and Believe’n’succeed,
Bounding’s mother, producing the Epsom Derby winner certainly
helps,” he said.
“They were both were sold here and you also have the likes of (the
UK’s) John and Jake Warren buying Missrock here last year (for $2.3
million) and Katsumi Yoshida and buyers of his ilk being active in this
very sales ring,
“It’s a proven source of these elite mares who can go all over the world
and succeed these days.”

Cummings: Kementari ready to win again
Godolphin Australia head trainer James
Cummings has made a strong case for
Kementari (Lonhro) to gain his first win in two
years at Eagle Farm tomorrow. The gelding
heads the weights for the Victory Stakes (Gr
2, 1200m) which will be his lead-up for the
Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) two weeks
later. “We’ve forged ahead with the horse and I
think he can win,” Cummings said. “On paper
his last run wasn’t hard to forgive. He missed
the start, made a long run and was giving
away plenty of weight to the winner. While it
may be thought that he’s looking for longer,
this is a good stepping stone to the Stradbroke
where he’s got 55.5 kilograms and he can’t get
a penalty for winning it.” Ryan Maloney will
ride Kementari and will retain the ride in the
Stradbroke.
Forster’s Chapter And Verse a pet projectTrainer Desleigh Forster will run Chapter And
Verse (Rothesay) in the Victory Stakes at Eagle
Farm tomorrow as she chases one of her biggest
wins. The gelding will need to win to make the
field for the Stradbroke Handicap. Forster has
first-hand knowledge of how Chapter And Verse
is gearing up in his trackwork as she had been
the horse’s exercise rider, too. An accomplished
long-distance rider in her youth, Forster has
taken to partnering many of her horses in
trackwork in recent months. It has been a major
reason she is enjoying one of her best seasons
with 26 wins from a team which rarely has
more than a dozen horses. “I have been riding
a heap of work and it is paying off. You can feel
exactly how well your horses are doing and act
accordingly,” Forster said. “If he (Chapter And
Verse) wins we are in the Stradbroke with a real
chance but if not we will have to find something
else.”
Anderson pair to take on boom three-year-old KinaneChris Anderson can see positives from taking
on the Chris Waller-trained Kinane (Reliable
Man) at Eagle Farm tomorrow. Kinane, who
has won his last two starts including the Frank
Packer Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) and has been the
subject of seven-figure offers from Hong Kong.
Kinane will run in tomorrow’s Gunsynd Classic
(Gr 3, 1800m) and in the Rough Habit Plate (Gr
3, 2000m) in a fortnight’s time. Anderson will
have Ballistic Boy (Smart Missile) and Profit
(Dundeel) running against Kinane in both
races. “Chris (Waller) has an outstanding winter
record and knows the right horses to bring
here,” Anderson said. “I have made no secret of
my good opinion of my pair. We had to cancel
Sydney autumn trips for both of them because
of the coronavirus restrictions. So running
against Kinane on Saturday will give us an idea
of how they would have gone in Sydney.”
Peltzer unlikely toprogress to AtkinsUnbeaten colt Peltzer (So You Think) is unlikely
to progress to the J J Atkins (Gr 1, 1400m) in
Brisbane with Gerald Ryan keen to end his
campaign at Randwick. The juvenile will bid
to defend his perfect record in the Darley 2YO
Stakes (1300m) tomorrow before he is spelled
with a view to the spring. Ryan fears that
pressing on to next month’s Atkins would not
leave enough time to get Peltzer ready for a
possible Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) tilt. “At the
moment I’m not a big wrap on going up there,”
Ryan said. “The lead-up to the Golden Rose and
those spring races, they start in the first week of
August. He doesn’t get a chance to have a break.
Not only that, he will have had two jump-outs,
two barrier trials, three races. It’s enough for
their preparation.”
Not An Option out to earn Atkins berthThe J J Atkins may be on the radar for Not An
Option (Not A Single Doubt) if he runs up to
expectations at Randwick tomorrow. Not An
Option will have his first start for new trainers
Richard and Michael Freedman in the Darley
2YO Handicap. He will carry 60 kilograms but
his trainers are confident of a solid showing
after his 1040-metre trial placing at Randwick
last week. “It was a good trial,” Michael
Freedman said. “He got back and made up a
nice bit of ground. It looks a nice race albeit
he will be carrying a bit of weight. We will
just have to see what the track comes up, but
with forecast rain we are probably going to be
in the heavy range, which may not be ideal
carrying that weight.” Not An Option will also
sport blinkers for the first time with James
McDonald to ride.

Plan B for St Covet’s SpiritThe Scone carnival delivered a mixed bag for
trainer Jason Coyle; although he missed an
opportunity with St Covet’s Spirit (Uncle Mo),
she did get a form boost. Coyle was keen to run
the two-time stakes placegetter in the Dark
Jewel Classic (Gr 3, 1400m) last Saturday but she
did not make the field. However, Dawn Passage
(Dawn Approach) franked her form with an
impressive win in the Inglis 3YO Guineas (RL,
1400m) on the same card to propel himself
into a live Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m)
contender. “I would have liked to gain a start in
the Dark Jewel last week. I think it was a nice
race for her, two weeks between runs over 1400
(metres),” Coyle said. “This is obviously Plan B
going the extra week between runs and back
to the 1200. It’s not always great to go back to
your Plan B but she looks quite well placed in
the race.”
Rich Charm heads to Flemington straight
Cult favourite Rich Charm (Danerich)
will be aiming for his first win down the
Flemington straight since he took out the
TAB Stakes (registered as Linlithgow Stakes)
(Gr 2, 1200m) in 2017 when he contests the
Straight Six (Listed, 1200m) tomorrow. After
11 months off the scene with problems,
Rich Charm returned to finish 11th in the
Hareeba Stakes (Listed, 1200m) in March at
his last start. "He was terribly unlucky that
day, climbing all over them, but it showed
me he was back," trainer Udyta Clarke said.
A jump-out at Cranbourne on Monday when
ridden by Patrick Moloney, who takes the
ride tomorrow, showed Clarke Rich Charm
was ready for another start. "Patrick said
you've got to start him somewhere, so we'll go
around on Saturday and see what happens,"
she said.
One-eyed blinkerfor HezafoxAfter a last start win at Sandown, Greg Eurell
has opted to apply a one-eyed blinker to
promising young stayer Hezafox (Foxwedge)
when the gelding contests the Efficient
Handicap (2000m) at Flemington tomorrow.
"He's always had this bit of a habit of leaning
in under pressure and it's been a bit of a tricky
one," Eurell said. "It's a bit of that old rule, 'if it’s
not broken, don't fix it' as he's been settling so
well, but late in his races he wants to get in. We
just think we can get a bit more out of him if he
runs straight and true. I tried a set of winkers on
him in trackwork but he didn't handle them at
all, so we tried a one-eyed blinker on the left eye
and I was surprised how well he took to it."
Ings hospitalised after fallJockey Chelsea Ings was taken to Westmead
Hospital with suspected concussion and facial
injuries following a race fall at Hawkesbury
yesterday. Ings was dislodged from Miss Merlin
(Camelot), trained by her mother Wanda,
after colliding heavily with a rival runner
near the 300 metres of the Australian Farriers
Conference Maiden Plate (1300m). She was
knocked unconscious in the fall but became
responsive to the attending ambulance officers
shortly after.
VRC: Melbourne Cup to be ‘the race that starts the nation’The Victoria Racing Club is set to use the 160th
running of the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)
this spring to acknowledge the grassroots of
the great race. "I think we are going to position
the Cup as the People's Cup this year," VRC
executive general manager of racing Leigh
Jordon told RSN927. "So, it's a chance for a
restart and for people to really get in touch
with what the Melbourne Cup actually means
to Australians. What it means to people in the
suburbs. The race that stops the nation on the
first Tuesday in November, the club sees this
year it could be the race that starts the nation.
It's all about having a barbeque watching
the races on the TV and the history of all the
winners, the horse, the trainers, the owners.
People getting dressed up and enjoying the
day."
Waterhouse arguesagainst spring changesHall of Fame trainer Gai Waterhouse has
decried moves to switch the Melbourne spring
carnival around, labelling the intended moves
as “madness” brought about by Racing NSW
chief Peter V’landys. “You could do it as a one-
off but I’m totally against it. I think they have a
very good race pattern that leads up to a grand
final, which is what people are heading for,
and that is the Melbourne Cup,” Waterhouse
told The Australian’s Brendan Cormick. “The
Caulfield Cup [has] stood the test of time and
all of a sudden, on a whim, they want to change
it. How do you qualify for the Melbourne Cup?
They moved the Mackinnon Stakes. It used to
be a qualifying race for the Melbourne Cup.
Why do they want to move everything? All
because Peter V’landys has put the ‘Golden
Seagull’ (Golden Eagle) on and everyone wants
to frantically move things around.”
Spring uncertainty puts Begg plans on holdGrahame Begg would like a quick resolution to
the potential changes for the Victorian spring
so he can map out plans for his team. Although
the Victoria Racing Club is committed to
not changing the date of the Melbourne Cup
carnival and the Moonee Valley Racing Club
is keen to run the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at
its regular time, the Melbourne Racing Club is
looking into a possible switch for the Caulfield
Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) to November. Racing Victoria
needs to ratify any programming changes and
says it won’t be making any announcement
until June, however Begg has already brought
Caulfield Cup hope Nonconformist (Rebel
Raider) back into work. “It’s all very well that
they say we should be running this race after
that and whatever, but we’ve got to get the
horses in and work out a program, outline what
we want to do and how we want to approach it,”
Begg said.

miEverest slot registrations soar past 1,000
Only 48 hours after it was announced that
miRunners had bought GPI Racing’s slot for The

“Not knowing quite how the racing public would
respond, the miEverest team are delighted to

Cruz looking to continue Champions & Chater runTony Cruz’s name is woven into the very fabric of
the sport in Hong Kong and in that respect he has
commonality with one of the city’s oldest and most
cherished races, the Champions & Chater Cup
(Gr 1, 2400m). The Champions & Chater Cup was
first contested back in 1870 and on Sunday, Cruz
will saddle last year’s victor Exultant (Teofilo) and
his recently-acquired Hong Kong Derby (Listed,
2000m) winner Furore (Pierro) – first and second in
the QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) last month – in a bid to
enhance his own impressive record in the historic
contest. Cruz won the race three times as a rider,
while he has won six of the last seven runnings as a
trainer. “Exultant is a real turf galloper, he loves the
mile and a half,” Cruz says. “The first year he ran
in it, he was only a four-year-old but last year you
could see he was stronger, more mature, and he
was easily the best horse. He’s in good form again
this season, he’s the champion stayer, so I can see
him winning it again.”

28 for CamelotFormer shuttler Camelot (Montjeu) landed
his 28th individual stakes winner yesterday as
Sunny Queen (3 f ex Suivi by Darshaan) took
out the Göddert Sybrecht Erinnerungsrennen
(Listed, 2000m) at Hannover in Germany. The
three-year-old filly is one of five winners out of
the stakes performed mare Suivi (Darshaan),
who herself is a half-sister to Group 2 scorer
Simoun (Monsun) as well as Listed winners
Shining (Surumu) and Soudaine (Monsun).
Suivi is also a half-sister to Soignee (Dashing
Blade), the dam of six-time Group 1 winner and
2009 Champion 3YO Filly in France, Stacelita
(Monsun). Stacelita went on to produce Soul
Stirring (Frankel), who is a dual Group 1
winner in Japan and was crowned Champion
2YO and 3YO Filly in Japan in 2016 and 2017.
Coolmore Ireland resident Camelot now stands
for €40,000 while he shuttled to Jerrys Plains in
Australia for one season in 2014, covering 104
mares at a fee of $22,000 (inc GST).

The Everest MIEVEREST
88 for Teofilo
Former Darley shuttler Teofilo (Galileo) sired his
88th individual stakes winner yesterday, when
Satomi (4 m ex Swordhalf by Haafhd) took out
the Hein Bollow-Memorial (Listed, 2200m) at
Hannover in Germany. The four-year-old mare
is out of Group 3 winner Swordhalf (Haafhd),
making her a half-sister to Listed winner Sword
Peinture (Peintre Celebre). Swordhalf herself is
a half-sister to Group 3 placegetter Swordshire
(Shirocco), while their dam Sword Roche
(Laroche) is a four-time stakes placegetter. Teofilo
shuttled to Australia for six seasons, covering
577 mares at a maximum fee of $44,000 (inc
GST), which resulted in Group 1 winners such as
Happy Clapper and Humidor. The son of Galileo
(Sadler’s Wells) now stands at Darley’s Kildangan
Stud in Ireland for a fee of €40,000.
Ward hopes for Royal Ascot representationWesley Ward will not be able to travel to the UK
for Royal Ascot this year, but he still hopes to
have runners at the mid-June meeting with the
American contemplating his string a month out.
Ward is planning to send Bound For Nowhere
(The Factor) for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes
(Gr 1, 6f) and speedy three-year-old filly Kimari
(Munnings) for the Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1,
6f). It is his juveniles, though, for which he is best
known and even though he has had a quieter
year so far, he hopes Tequila Queen (American
Pharoah) can stamp herself as an Ascot filly this
morning (Australian time). “I’d ordinarily train on
grass but we had to switch to dirt because that’s
the only option in south Florida,” Ward told The
Guardian. “So they haven’t come out running
like they have in years past, but I expect this week
actually, starting Thursday, to have some big
efforts from my two-year-olds.”
Grant has Cup aspirations for Social ParanoiaAmerican Grade 3 winner Social Paranoia
(Street Boss) could be bound for the Melbourne
Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) if owner Stuart Grant
has his way. Grant, who has raced horses in
Australia including stakes winner Let Me Sleep
On It (Manhattan Rain), hopes that the Todd
Pletcher-trained Social Paranoia could become
the first American to run in the Cup. A Grade
1 placegetter in the Belmont Derby (Gr 1, 10f)
at three - finishing more than six lengths in
advance of Australian Group 1 winner Cape Of
Good Hope (Galileo) - Social Paranoia won the
Appleton Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) at Gulfstream Park at
his first run as a four-year-old, sweeping from
last to first. “He’s shown he can go the distance,”
Grant told Bloodhorse. “If we add another
quarter of a mile or five-sixteenths of a mile, he
could still do that. Boy, wouldn’t that be fun.”

Eligible employers will be able to receive
and pay the JobKeeper payments to various
employee categories, including, but not limited
to:
• Employees who were employed by you as employees as at March 1, 2020;
• Employees currently employed by you (including those stood down or re-hired);
• Employees who are full-time, part-time, or long-term casuals (to get the payment for
a casual employee, they must have been employed by you on a regular basis for longer
than 12 months as at March 1, 2020); and• Employees who are not in receipt of a
JobKeeper Payment from another employer.
• Special eligibility for horse business structures with no employeesPresuming the above eligibility conditions for employers and
employees are satisfied, note below how a “nominated” employee for the
following common business structures are eligible to receive JobKeeper.
• Sole traders
The proprietor will be eligible if they do not receive JobKeeper from
another source.Another reminder: for verification purposes, businesses without
employees, such as a sole trader:• will need to provide an ABN for their business;
• nominate an individual to receive the payment;
• provide that individual’s Tax File Number; and
• provide a declaration as to the recent business activity of that business.
Sole traders are easily the most common horse structures and, as
such, it is worth sharing that if you are also employed on a wage and
would like to receive JobKeeper as a sole trader, rather than through your
employer, you can nominate yourself as the “eligible business participant”
Carrazzo Consulting Pty Ltd | Chartered Accountants - www.carrazzo.com.au
under the business participation rules and give appropriate notice to the
ATO. In this scenario, your employer cannot nominate you for JobKeeper
payments.
• PartnershipsA single partner in a partnership can be nominated. This single
partner must not be receiving JobKeeper from another source.• Trusts
A single individual beneficiary of a trust can be nominated to receive
JobKeeper payments. This individual beneficiary must not be receiving
JobKeeper from another source. The beneficiaries of a trust are outlined and defined within its trust deed.
• CompaniesA single director or shareholder of a company can be nominated.
These businesses will also receive JobKeeper payments for their other
eligible employees. This single director must not be receiving JobKeeper from another
source.
These initiatives are a step forward, but
it is noted by accounting bodies, such as CPA
Australia, that they have limitations in ensuring
equitable access to JobKeeper within trust,
partnership, and company structures. They will
recommend to government that the ‘business
participant’ test be extended to all actively
engaged persons in trusts, partnerships and
companies. For more details on JobKeeper, please refer
to our recent release titled “JobKeeper subsidy
for businesses and employees” on the Carrazzo
blog at www.carrazzo.com.au.

Of all the recent government Covid-19 initiatives recently announced, it is generally thought that the JobKeeper payment for employers is only available to profitable horse businesses that have established employees. If you thought this was the case, read on, upon review of the recently announced JobKeeper legislation, I have some pleasant surprises for you.Below, I will work through the four common business structures and explain how it is possible for business owners that operate as sole traders or through trusts, partnerships and companies, to be eligible for JobKeeper even if their businesses are currently in losses and/or they aren’t being paid wages.

JobKeeper – positive updatecould benefit your horse business
JobKeeper payment – quick overviewA JobKeeper payment is a minimum payment ($1,500 per fortnight) the Government will pay to eligible businesses (defined below) to ensure they are able to keep their eligible employees (defined below) employed by them during this Covid-19 period. The first payment will be received by employers from the ATO in the
first week of May, 2020 and will be backdated to be payable from the scheme commencement of March 30, 2020. Payments under JobKeeper can be received up to September 27, 2020.• Eligible employers
All businesses who meet the turnover tests below can now register their interest with the ATO to receive the JobKeeper payment for their employees. Update to “Turnover tests” for employers All businesses (including sole traders) can now register their interest to
receive the JobKeeper payments for their employees (or themselves if sole traders) if they meet the various turnover tests. The most applicable test to the horse industry is that their turnover has been reduced by more than 30 per cent relative to a comparable period a year ago (of at least a month).
Since our original release on JobKeeper a few weeks ago, the ATO has given more details as to how to apply the “turnover test”. This is a crucial consideration for employers and is noted below.
How to calculate a fall in turnover for the first fortnight starting 30 March 2020To work out your fall in turnover, you can compare either:• GST turnover for March, 2020 with GST turnover for March, 2019• projected GST turnover for April, 2020 with GST turnover for April, 2019• projected GST turnover for the quarter starting April 2020 with GST
turnover for the quarter starting April, 2019How you choose to project your fall in turnover is not dependent on whether you report a quarterly or monthly BAS, though you can do that if it is easier.
If you work out that you qualify for the JobKeeper payments for the first fortnight because your turnover has declined by the relevant amount, you remain eligible and do not need to keep testing turnover in following months. However, you will have ongoing monthly reporting requirements. More information will be provided soon. The ATO also has the discretion to set out alternative tests that can
establish your eligibility when turnover periods are not appropriately comparable (for example, if your business has been in operation less than a year). We will provide more information soon about alternative tests.

“The interest has been very good,
and probably better than we thought, and by design we held back on
announcing fees just because we needed to see where the market sat, see
what the appetite was and just get a feel for what the market is saying,” Cox
told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.
“We think we have got a relative idea on where it all sits, but those
three in particular have demanded a lot of interest at this early stage.”
While conscious of the prevailing market outlook caused by the global
pandemic, Cox said the deeds of Exceed And Excel demanded that the
rising 20-year-old’s service fee was put up from $88,000 in 2019 given his
recent achievements.
Buyers have also recognised Exceed And Excel’s consistent
performance as an elite sire, with a colt making $1.7 million at the Easter
sale last year and another son at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast
Yearling Sale fetching $1.8 million, the second highest-priced yearling
sold at auction in Australasia this year.
“He has got three Group 1-winning colts at the moment and two
recently retired, Microphone and Exceedance and for Bivouac, it is our
intention to race him on next season,” he said.
“Having said that, those horses are winning the proper races - the
right races - and it shows with what the horse is doing in the sale ring as
well. Exceed is a horse who can change your postcode, whether you are
racing one or if you have got one in the sale ring.
“When a horse has that sort of effect generally you expect that to be
reflected in his price and that is where we’ve moved him to.”
Darley has maintained the 2019 service fees of Victorian-based
stallions Street Boss (Street Cry) ($27,500) and Brazen Beau (I Am
Invincible) ($49,500), the leading second season sire by stakes winners
with five, in front of money-earning leader Rubick (Encosta De Lago)
(two) and Deep Field (Northern Meteor) (three).
The remainder of Darley’s stallion roster, including champion Lonhro
(Octagonal) ($66,000), Astern (Medagalia d’Oro) ($22,000), Epaulette
(Commands) ($22,000) and Harry Angel (Dark Angel) ($16,500), have all
had their service fees reduced.

“I think he’s
going to come as a little bit of a shock and a
surprise to the market that he is standing under
the Newgate banner, but he’s a horse we just felt
deserved his chance,” Slade told ANZ Bloodstock
News yesterday.
“Obviously, he raced in the Godolphin
colours and I think everyone’s first memory of the
horse is that he is that X-factor horse that was the
early favourite for the Golden Slipper. Everyone
was so excited after his debut to see where he’d
go and where he’d get to, but unfortunately, due
to injury, he was never able to fulfill the potential
that he had shown on debut.”
That debut was an electric five and a quarter
length victory in the Golden Gift (1100m) at
Rosehill in November, 2018. It was a win that saw
Tassort assume early favouritism for that season’s Golden Slipper Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m), with form analysts rating his performance through the
roof: The Rating Bureau’s Daniel O’Sullivan declared it a “Group 1 class”
performance that was “stamped
by a sharp turn of foot, terrific late
strength and fast overall time”,
placing him in rarefied company.
Unfortunately, the colt only
raced once more, when he was
sent out as an odds-on favourite
in the Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2,
1100m) at Rosehill. Slow from the
stalls, he settled near the rear in an
evenly-run race, making ground
late into second but unable to reel
in Time To Reign (Time For War).
“We had key indicators
through this horse’s career that
told us he was elite and just
never had the chance to show it,”
Slade said. “We are big on time ratings and data. Daniel O’Sullivan from
The Ratings Bureau gave this guy a 103 on debut when he won. He was
impressive to the eye that day but when the time data came back, it said,
listen, this is as impressive a two-year-old debut that we’ve seen since the
likes of Estijaab and Extreme Choice. To be honest, at the time, we thought
we had a colt to be really concerned about on the racetrack, wearing our
Newgate cap!
“Obviously we never got to see that ability but on the back of that
performance, that debut, James McDonald came out and said he was the
real deal and James Cummings was very much of the same opinion, he
had a very high opinion of the horse. Everyone that had something to do
with him plus the time data suggested he had the ability to be that real
elite performer.
Slade continued: “At the end of the day, for all of us, our key criteria
for any young stallion standing at Newgate is that elite race performance.
Horses don’t have to win their Group 1s, but if they showed elite
performance, they generally are your best chance of becoming an
important stallion.
“I just feel you only have to look at the general sires list to see that. They are
either proper, proper Group 1 horses, or they were horses who had that ability but
didn’t get to showcase their true potential.

Joao Moreira and Zac Purton continued
their enthralling back-and-forth contest
for the jockeys’ championship with a
double each at Happy Valley on
Wednesday night.
“It’s such a journey; but it’s a good one!”
Moreira beamed after having the final word –
until next time, at least – on Shining Ace (Testa
Rossa) in the finale, the Class 2 Ho Chung River
Handicap (1200m).
Hong Kong’s two standout riders – each a
three-time Hong Kong champion – started the
night all square on 117 wins and ended all even
on 119.
Purton was fastest off the mark, edging
one ahead when Dionysus Collin (Dream
Ahead) landed race two, the Class 4 Tan Shan
River Handicap (1800m). It was the defending
champion’s first sit on the four-year-old and
his booking made a difference as the Francis
Lui-trained gelding knuckled down to earn a
maiden win at start 20.
Moreira fired an immediate reply in the next
with a sublime make-all ride on the Caspar Fownes-
trained Lightning Steed (California Dane) in the
Class 4 Tai Shing Stream Handicap (1650m).
“I rode him the time before but Caspar
said this time it would be a bit different. The
circumstances today just allowed me to ride
the horse how he likes to be ridden and he
quickened down the straight in a way that he
was never going to get beaten,” Moreira said.
The big two were kept quiet through the
middle part of the card but Purton was back in
front when the Danny Shum-trained Golden
Dash (Snitzel) took the Class 3 Lam Tsuen River
Handicap (1200m) under a sweetly-judged
steer.
“We had a good draw so obviously that
helped but Danny’s done a good job to bring
him back from injury, he’s given him plenty of
time and a couple of runs to get him ready for
this,” Purton said.
“He drew the right gate (one) and enjoyed a
little bit of give in the ground – he won’t be out
of place in Class 2.”
Purton went into the last with a leg-up on
the 3.3 favourite Amazing Star (Darci Brahma)
but Moreira was not to be outdone. The ‘Magic
Man’ ensured Shining Ace held the rail in a
prominent spot, applied pressure to Purton’s
mount around the turn, and, when that rival
began to fade, gave the John Size-trained four-
year-old a dig and enjoyed a rolling run to the
line through the rain.
“He just loves the wet; when he won with
me before it was raining and the ground was
soft,” Moreira said.
“I was surprised that he was able to bounce
out so quickly and challenge those fast horses
up there, but as well as he was going, he
was never going to stop. It’s a great training
achievement. All the praise should go to John –
he’s improved this horse so much.
“Hopefully the winners will keep on
coming,” he added.
Unicorn is backClassic Unicorn (Per Incanto) appeared
to have put his career back on the rails with a
blazing success in the Class 3 Kam Tim River
Handicap (1000m).
The Chris So-trained four-year-old set a
fast tempo under Derek Leung and just kept
on going to slam his rivals by four lengths in a
sharp time of 56.38 seconds.
Classic Unicorn was flagged as a horse of
exciting potential when he opened his career
late last season with two impressive wins down
the Sha Tin straight. But the chestnut flopped
well below those expectations in two sub-
par efforts during the first part of the current
campaign, so much so that his handler moth-
balled him for a spell.
“It’s been a long time! Early this season
he was quite disappointing and at the end of
last season everyone expected him to be like a
superstar,” So said.
“Mentally, he’s not been 100 per cent; his
first two races this season, when the horses

squeezed him, he wasn’t comfortable, he got
his head up and he didn’t know what was going
on, so I told the owner to give him a small break
and give him time to learn more.”
Classic Unicorn returned in late April from
a four-month spell to finish fourth at the course
and distance and that effort sharpened him for
this evening’s exercise.
“Last time at Happy Valley he ran okay but
this time he has improved a lot and he had the
good draw (gate three). It seems that his head
has been the problem – he’s a big horse with
a long stride and he still has potential, he just
needed time to mature.”
Cruz edges towards a championship challenge
Tony Cruz moved to within nine wins of
trainers’ premiership leader Ricky Yiu when
Bullish Brother (Reward For Effort) took section
one of the Class 4 Shan Pui River Handicap
(1200m) under Vincent Ho. Cruz has 15 more
meetings to reel in the long-time leader, who
drew a blank for the fourth meeting in a row.
“This horse was drawn one and that was a
big help on this track tonight, he got a really good
position and then I knew he was a big chance,”
Cruz said. “He’s had some issues with his knee so
I’m very happy we could get this win.”
Peter Ho, on the other hand, is at the foot
of the table and top-weight Magnificent’s
(Zebedee) much-needed victory under Dylan
Mo in the Class 3 Nam Chung River Handicap
(1650m) was only the stable’s 13th this season
for prize money of HK$18.5 million. The handler
requires 16 wins, or 14 wins plus HK$21 million
in prize money, to avoid a strike on his record in
a three and you’re out system.
Alfred Chan partnered his second winner
for the Dennis Yip stable, 11 days after his first,
with a make all ride on top-weight Flying Bonus
(Snitzel) in section two of the Class 4 Shan Pui
River Handicap (1200m).
David Ferraris and Karis Teetan combined
to take the opener, section three of the Class 4
Shan Pui River Handicap (1200m), with Here
Comes Ted (Per Incanto). The three-year-old
earned his first career win at the 10th attempt.
Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin
on Sunday when the day’s feature will be the
Champions & Chater Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), the
final Group 1 of the season.

when he scored an easy maiden
win on the Kensington track on Wednesday.
A Waikato Stud homebred, Tommy Gold
broke through for his first win at his fourth start
in the 1100-metre maiden handicap.
Settling near the rear under Glen Boss, he
made a looping run around the field to hit the
front soon after straightening. Powering down
the outside, he defeated Dance (Not A Single
Doubt) by a length and a half, with blueblood
Narvaez (Vancouver), who is by a Golden
Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner and out
of a Golden Slipper runner-up in Headway
(Charge Forward), coming home a further nose
away in third.
The John O’Shea-trained colt had shown
promise in three starts throughout his two-
year-old career, finishing fourth on debut to
Time Is Precious (Snitzel) in the Victory Vein
Plate (1000m) back in October, followed by a
fast-finishing second in a maiden in February
and then making late ground for a midfield
finish in the Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)
behind Mamaragan (Wandjina).
O’Shea yesterday confirmed on Twitter
that the colt would be spelled immediately
with spring targets in mind, with Glen Boss
giving the youngster a tick of approval heading
towards bigger and better races.
“I know we’re getting towards the winter,
but I think it was a pretty good two-year-old
race. I think there were some that trialled really
well and, in the enclosure, you could see that
there were some really cracking types,” Boss
said. “It doesn’t matter what time of the year
it is in Sydney, there are good horses being
produced all the time, especially young ones,
there’s so many of them.
“He’s a horse you can follow because he
was pretty impressive and, like the other horses
in the race, he’s going to improve again. He was
huge in condition. The real good turn of speed,
I was quite impressed. He put it away very
quickly.
"He got to the front and he idled up the
straight and I had nothing taking me on. This
is a bit of a rolling track, you have to get your
momentum going and when you are getting
towards the 200, 250, 300, you want to be going
towards your top, it’s one of those tracks.
“I was mindful of that, but when he got to
the front, he had absolutely no idea what to do
with himself. He was still doing speed but he
was idling off. I’m sure if he had something a
couple of lengths in front of him, he would have
chased it down.
“He’s been unlucky in his races but a lot of
it has been greenness. He’s got himself in the
wrong spot. Now he’s won, I think he might be
able to go on.”
Tommy Gold is from the second crop of
the late Waikato Stud stallion Sacred Falls
(O’Reilly) and represented the two-time
Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner’s first
two-year-old success this season on either side
of the Tasman.
Tommy Gold is out of former Western
Australian filly Gold Rocks (Oratorio), a winner
of the Karrakatta Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) as a two-
year-old. She has produced five foals to race for
four winners, including consecutive winners of
the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m),
Gold Rush (So You Think) and Gold Fever
(Savabeel), as well as Gimcrack Stakes (Listed,
1000m) winner Calaverite (Lonhro).
The colonial family dates back over a
century. In particular, Tommy Gold’s fourth
dam, 1983 Wagga Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m)
winner Madame Monet (Koryo) who has
produced a number of prolific winners through
her descendants.
Tommy Gold’s win couldn’t have come at
a better time for Rosemont Stud, who will offer
Gold Rush as part of their unreserved online
sale through the Magic Millions digital platform
next Monday and Tuesday.
Gold Rush, who is currently located at
Mapperley Stud in New Zealand, remains So
You Think’s (High Chaparral) only Group-
winning two-year-old, among his 17 Group
winners.
Her first foal is a yearling colt by Savabeel
(Zabeel) who has been retained to race by
Rosemont Stud. She will be offered in foal
to Savabeel once more, while she has also
produced an I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit)
filly that will be offered at Karaka next year.
Gold Rush will be offered as Lot 40.
