Bird has a ‘dickie’knee operationRETIRED Test umpire Dickie Bird is recovering from anoperation during which he had an artificial kneeimplant.
Doctors have told him it is remarkable he can walkaround without crutches so soon after the operation.
He said: “I have been told the muscle around the kneeis in very good condition because I kept myself so fitwhen I was playing cricket and umpiring.
“I can walk around the house and take a short walk upthe lane, but I have a driver for longer distances.”
He is not expected to be able to drive for six weeks.He added: “There is so much metal in my knee that I do
not expect to be able to get through the metal detectorsat airports.”
