JULY 16, 2017
Dear Parishioners,
Today I would like to review our practices regarding funerals. The present revised rite, called the “Order of Christian Funerals” began to be used in the United States in 1989. There are three parts to a Catholic Funeral: the Vigil, the Funeral Mass, and the Burial. All three parts should take place when we honor our dead. The VIGIL is a time of remembering. It can be done at the funeral home, a hall, or someone’s home. We remember the deceased and their life on this earth. We can cry, sing songs, say prayers, say a rosary, most anything we want to. If a eulogy is to be given it should be done at the Vigil. The Vigil is to conclude with the short prayer service. It consists of a short liturgy of the Word, prayer of intercession, and a concluding rite. Typically, the Vigil Service concludes our time together. It can be led by a priest, deacon, or lay person. In some communities, like ours, the rosary is a popular part of the Vigil, but it should not take the place of the Vigil Service. The FUNERAL MASS takes place in a church. While the Vigil consisted of us doing what we wanted to remember about the deceased, at the Funeral Mass the liturgy wraps us up in the prayer of the Church. The Vigil was about looking back. The Funeral Mass is about looking forward to heaven. The Vigil is relatively unstructured. The Mass is quite structured and allows us to be carried by the prayers and hymns to profess our faith in the Resurrection. The family is welcome to use the books we have to select an Old Testament reading, a New Testament reading, and a Gospel. If scripture readings are selected other than the ones offered in the ritual, I will consider them if they seem reasonable for what we are doing. It is good if the family can supply a reader and distributors of the Eucharist. Sometimes someone wants to offer a reflection on the deceased’s life. This reflection is not a time to tell jokes, etc. The reflection should demonstrate the person’s faith and how that was evidenced in their life. We have had a significant amount of abuse of this privilege at our three parishes. Therefore, from now on, I must see the text of the remarks no later than 24 hours before the Mass. The text can be no more than one page. If a different type of talk is desired, that can best be done at the Vigil.
The BURIAL takes place after the Funeral Mass. If the body of the deceased is to be cremated after the Mass, we can schedule a burial when the ashes are returned. Burial is the final goodbye. We await the trumpet that will sound when the dead shall rise triumphant at the end of time. Burial should not be delayed. We are not to place cremains in our home indefinitely. They should be placed in the ground or other place of interment. I hope this little explanation helps you understand a little better our liturgies for our deceased family and friends. Fr. Fred

FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar
The stress and anxieties of family life are like “thorns which choke off” any opportunity to reflect on God’s presence in our lives. Notice in today’s gospel Jesus “left the house” so He could connect with His Father. Take five minutes each day to appreciate God waling with you.
