Before we begin…
• You need to be prepared to tell Facebook your name, birth date, sex and email address.

Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 6

Internet Explorer Mozilla Firefox
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 7
You’ll have to do this step from your own computer. (No, this isn’t really Step 3, 2 or 1.)
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 11
…it means Facebook sent you this email to verify you are who you said.
Open your email and click on this link
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 13
You can activate your mobile phone after you’ve used Facebook a while.
Not today
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 16
You have to tell Facebook… …but you don’t have
to tell anyone else.
You can always change everything but your name, age, sex and email address.
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 17

What does it mean to be tagged in a photo or video?
When finished with this page, click “Back to Privacy” button at the top of the page. Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 28
“On Facebook, your name, profile picture, gender and networks are visible to everyone. Also, by default, apps have access to your friends list and any information you choose to share with everyone.”
Once you give your friends’ names and email addresses to Facebook and to any games or apps, you cannot get them back. Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 30
If you have not subscribed to any app, there are no settings to edit.
Click Edit Settings for “Info accessible through your friends.”
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 31
“Use the settings below to control which of your information is available to applications, games and websites when your friends use them. The more info you share, the more social the experience.”
To start, select the most restrictive option – uncheck all these boxes.
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 32
Click Friends Only button for “Game and app activity”…
…and your choices will be: Everyone Friends of friends Friends only Customize Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 33
If you select Customize, you’ll get this pop-up window for “Custom Privacy.”
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 34
Click Edit Settings button for “Instant personalization.”
You’ll get a video window…
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 36
www.facebook.com/instant_personalization
“Partners adhere to Facebook's guidelines and may only use your public information to serve you a personalized experience. Public information includes your name, profile picture, gender, networks, and other information shared with everyone.”
Skip the video for now and instead click on “Learn More,”…
…which goes to this page…
…which says:
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 37
Your “information available to everyone” includes the Facebook posts you have read.
How useful would personalization be to you?
Are you likely to visit any of these sites often?
When finished with this page, click “Back to Apps” button at the top of the page. Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 38
When people do a Web search on your name (Google), do you want your Facebook page to
appear on their search-results page?
When finished with this page, click “Back to Apps” button at the top of this page and then “Back to Privacy” at the top of Apps, Games and Websites page. Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 40
We’re done here for now. Come back later to read these pages about blocking and sharing.
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 41

Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 46
Every once in a while, come back here to “Download Your Information.”
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 47
If you ever want to leave Facebook, download your information and then click “deactivate.” You can actually delete
your account by going here: https://ssl.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=delete_account

Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 50
Make your selection for “Allow adds on platform pages…” and then scroll down and make a selection for “Show my social actions in Facebook ads to…”
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 51
Now you need to add the names and email addresses of your Friends…
…in order to share what you post and to see what they post.
Try using the Facebook friend finder.
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 53
Depending on which email program you use, you might need to convert the information in your email address book into CSV format so Facebook can put your address book entries into your Facebook Friends list. Text that’s in the CSV (comma-separated-value) format is what gets pulled out of one software program so it can be put into another software program. Each output item is separated by a comma from surrounding items, and each output text item is surrounded by "double quotes“. So output from an email address book would look something like this: “Mike Starks”, “[email protected]”, “Zionsville”,

You can create and name your own Friends lists and give more access to one and less access to another.
Michael Henry Starks [email protected] 56
Facebook asks, “What’s on your mind?” and “What are you planning?”
Your answers to these questions are the posts that show up on your friends’ News Feed pages.

Life is more than text.
You can also post photos, a link to a Web page and/or a video file.
