The new-age bride
Mumbai, Thursday, August 18, 2016
Falguni and Shane Peacock’s legacy is synonymous with in-novation and constant adapta-tion to changing trends. As they
unveil their new (anti) bridal collec-tion under the Peacock Bride label featuring the ravishing Walusha Dsouza, an amalgamation of Indian silhouettes coupled with timeless em-broidery techniques defines the latest collection. “We have created beauti-ful separates that can be worn togeth-er forming a cohesive ensemble or separately as statement pieces. In-spired by the indigenous artworks of Jaipur palaces amalgamated with French architecture in a diverse col-our pallete, the line caters to a wide range of women offering something
to the entire bridal entourage espe-cially those who want to make a Goth style statement,” says Falguni Peacock
“The label looks forward to keep-ing in mind a bride’s particular de-sire for a symbolic and meaningful ensemble that captures traditional elements tweaked with French cul-tural ethics and deep dark hues. Look out for our signature gowns, anarkali gowns with prints, our bespoke le-henga with foil applique and saris with light crystals. Our fusion crop tops and digital skirts in a new fresh colour palette are in line with trend-ing themes and destination weddings anywhere in the world,” says Shane Peacock.

The low-down on how to nail the trend...

Schoolboy checks have swaggered their way into the fall winter canvas.
Bottega Veneta presented them in a dense format on a topcoat while Giorgio Armani’s take was more distinctive and clean. De-signer Troy Costa has been ahead of the curve as he’s been showcasing win-dowpane check, double-breasted, snug-fitting, ta-pered suits for many seasons now. His Wool-mark line was brimming with the classic pattern in tones of navy and grey. Also, worth mentioning are Sahil Aneja, Suket Dhir and Lacquered Em-bassy, who have toyed with it this season.
The history of this clas-sic can be traced back to the likes of Clark Gable and the Duke of Windsor, who wore his either as a peak-lapelled, double-breasted suit, or as a more casual sportcoat — clubbed with two-inch cuffed trou-sers. And who can forget Johnny Depp’s portrayal of gangster John Dillinger in 2009 film Public Ene-mies, who often wears a w i n d ow p a n e d o u bl e -breasted forest green top-coat with peaked lapels?
Make it your ownAmit Hansraj, menswear specialist, Ensemble and blogger at Indian Dandy
says, “A head-to-toe win-dowpane check suit isn’t flattering to most Indian body types. The trick is to mix and match and not make the mid-section look bulky. I think long shirts in checks work well but bot-t o m c h e c k s a r e n ’ t flattering.”He suggests pairing a solid sherwani with a checkered stole to break the monoto-ny or opting for a bandi in checks. “Personally, I’d like to wear a schoolboy check suit with a long line Arjun Saluja shirt and complete my look with a pair of kol-hapuris. It’s imperative to interpret it in your own handwriting.”
Quite a comebackDesigner Gyanesh Sarvai-ya of the label Pratham and Gyanesh attributes it to the sartorial shenani-gans of shows like Mad Men. “The check suit is a smart option for sharp dressers. Done right, mod-ern check suiting has a vintage elegance to it that is both contemporary and traditional. Done wrong, it looks like you raided your grandfather’s closet,” he cautions.
Powerful yet restrainedMenswear designer Anuj Madaan says, “Considering the resourcefulness of this ageless pattern, it breathes a new life into each sepa-rate. These powerful-yet-restrained checks are mak-ing a comeback in a modern way. This season they are reworked into sporty an outwear silhouettes mak-ing it more interesting and attention-grabbing.”
Designer Anas Dokadia says, “From the classic Prince of Wales to over-sized windowpane — checks are a increasing trend in men’s tailoring for a while now and consider-ing the versatility and bold appeal of this pattern, it always makes an impact.”

Look who’s back
After a brief sabbatical from fashion, designer Surily Goel
is back. The spirited girl made quite an entrance at
Ensemble, Lion’s Gate re-launch party as she walked
in with her current muses Mehr Rampal and Ujjwala
Raut rocking her floral concoctions. Boho chic has
always been the core of her aesthetic and this time she
presented it with the on-trend off-shoulder detailing.

As door-knockers and shoul-der-dusters inspired from the 80s have been revived
on the runway; sculptural ear-rings have been embraced by many of our B-Town lasses with elan.
Art Of AccessorisingJewellery designer, Mrinalini Chandra describes her collection as nuances of quirky. Ask her how she would style sculptural earrings and she says, “You have to make one thing your hero, ei-ther your outfit or the jewellery pieces. For Indian wear, I remem-ber styling models with chiffon saris, pairing the look with mang
tika, gold chandelier earrings and haath phool. If you’re taking the western route, balance out the chunky, dangly earrings with a slender tube top, jacket and a pair of denims. Match the hint of metal you are wearing to your shoes, and you’ll have a classic look on hand. I believe this gives an aesthetic appeal to the outfit, creating an elegant look.”
Go For Solid ColoursDesigner Aniket Satam says, “Our eyes perceive looks from top to bottom. Bringing defini-tion to your face will make state-ment earrings stand-out even more. The best way would be styl-ing it with an off-shoulder top. There are myths that you can’t
wear long shoulder-dusters with a round/high/ribbed neckline. I would, however, not suggest styl-ing detailed earrings with prints and themed chokers. Basic, solid colours provide a good base for your jewellery to be the centre of attention.”
bold And brightIn 2016, there are no rules to fash-ion and styling. Designer Nitya Arora of Valliyan has a similar outlook, she adds “I believe there are no boundaries when wanting to style bold jewellery. Mixing colours and prints with chunky earrings shouldn’t be considered a fashion faux-pas. It depends on what prints you choose to wear and how bright the colours are.”

Grindr’s debut fashion lineMen usually log on to
Grindr for one thing and one thing only: sex, fun times with other
men. The dating app has cor-nered the market in virtual male sexual encounters, supplanting the often dangerous world of cruising into a safe, sociable digi-tal space. But lately the app has been moving into new territory, including selling premium tick-ets to Madonna concerts. But its newest foray is its most ambi-tious yet: a full-blown fashion line.
Comprised of 29 separate piec-es, Grindr’s debut fashion collec-tion is titled “The Varsity Collec-
tion.” This locker-room-like influence is clearly felt across the array of tight-fitting sportswear, wrought in flashy shades of pri-mary colors. The line is grounded by high-cut shorts, tank-tops, T-shirts and swimming trunks, with the intricate print created in collaboration with design studio
Print All Over Me. All sales of the clothing will go towards Athlete Ally, a charity benefitting LGBTQ athletes.
As cheeky the fashion line is, this should not come as an im-mense surprise, as the app has spent the past year moving closer and closer towards the world of fashion. Earlier this year, fashion maverick JW Anderson chose to stream his personal label’s FW16 runway show exclusively on the app before releasing it to the rest of the world, which must have made a nice surprise for the men online trying to get laid. The col-lection goes on sale this week on the app’s online store.
