Oh where to begin?
We’re off on a winery tour of Melbourne and, lucky for us, our biggest problem will be: do we
have enough room in the boot for all necessary purchases? Our ‘highly recommended’ list is long
and backed by the experts, but today we’re keen to try a few lesser-known establishments across
Melbourne on this ‘off the beaten track’ winery tour. Yes, she’s got some tough competition from
the Barossa, Margaret River, McLaren Vale and the Hunter, but Melbourne can hold her own when
it comes to smashingly good wines.

Feature story.
We’ve decided to head south first - well past the end of the train line - and climb Mornington Peninsula’s most recognisable landmark: Red Hill’s Arthur’s Seat, for a bird’s eye view. Billed as the fourth most popular food and wine experience in the state, this region epitomises all things we wine lovers adore – fabulous wine and the promise of even better food!
While a day trip from Melbourne’s CBD could take in shopping, surfing, market gathering or antique hunting, today’s adventure had been ear marked as a wine-only adventure – with a few tasty morsels on the side of course.
The Peninsula boasts more than 50 cellar doors, and is ‘the’ place to secure award winning pinot noir and a cheeky cool climate chardonnay or two.
The local topography and a distinct microclimate here also helps to produce the on-trend varieties of pinot grigio and pinot gris.
In this neck of the woods we are spoilt for choice when it comes to award winning winemakers, including Port Phillip and Red Hill Estates, Terminus and Ten Minutes by Tractor - to name just a few.
But today we’re in search of a few hidden gems and keen to discover a few lesser-know establishments.
Our first stop is Tuerong’s Yabby Creek, known for its ‘single vineyard’ philosophy which, according to their website, allows their winemakers to “explore the subtle nuances of their vineyard and gain a deeper understanding of its character, and its evolution as the vines mature.”
These guys know their stuff and we’re not disappointed with the quality of the pinot noir and chardonnay.
Back in the car, we’ve taken a slight detour for a little hidden gem of the Melbourne wine scene.
Resisting the pull of the reputed wineries of Red Hill and Balnarring, we grab for the latest James Halliday Top 100 Wines guide and locate the home of one of the country’s best pinot noir’s at Moorooduc Estate Winery. Established in 1982 this small family-run winery boasts “an enviable reputation for complex and food friendly wines”– our sort of establishment.
We’re not disappointed and after lunch, and our fair share of pinot noir (with a good stash to put away for later), we head slightly east towards the lure of the lesser known wineries of Officer and Emerald – after all it’s not often you get a chance to wander off the beaten track.

Feature story.
The Australian Good Food and Travel Guide describes Emerald’s D’Angelo Estate premium wines as “capturing the essence of life” and we’re instantly won over by its boutique charm and relaxed atmosphere.
Once again we’re thankful for the local cool climate, which helps produce the superb and complex flavours of the pinot noir, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio, shiraz and viognier varieties.
Goodness me, the boot is already close to full and the Yarra Valley beckons.
On our journey north we’ve time to pore over Halliday’s bible, helping to establish a necessary itinerary as we approach one of the country’s most renowned cool-climate wine regions.
We‘ve strategically made the Yarra Valley our final destination, and resting place for the night. Firstly: for the benefit of our driver – who deserves a break and the chance to sample a few wines – and secondly: we just don’t have much room left in the boot!
The Yarra Valley region boasts so many wineries, and is steeped in history with strong links to the state’s pioneering wine industry way back in 1838.
But, it’s the new kids on the block we’re keen to discover here and with Halliday as our guide we head to Hoddles Creek Estate, on Gembrook Rd, for one of the best ‘estate-grown, no-additions’ chardonnays of this region.
Awarded a ‘gold’ rating by Halliday, this outstanding drop is a winner and we’re now close to spilling point from the boot, with still more to come.
A little further north, in nearby Coldstream, we are treated to another gorgeous chardonnay from the oldest vineyard in the Upper Yarra, Oakridge Wines, just off Maroondah Hwy.
From here we’re forced to pull up stumps and check into our nearby bed and breakfast accommodation and by now we’re well and truly full to the brim – boot and all.
As we sample a few chosen drops from the day’s adventure, we make an executive decision to hire a bus (and driver) when we next tackle our ‘off the beaten track’ winery tour.
Hope you can join us again next time… cheers!

Marketing.A quick guide to selling your property by private sale.
Property insights.
Property sales are successful because of a variety of factors, including a well-designed marketing campaign. No individual marketing strategy is effective on its own, but taking advantage of all of them in conjunction with an agent’s experience to close the sale, will make sure your property gets sold quickly, and for the very best price.
Let’s take some time to understand the different components of a successful marketing campaign.
Professional photography
Dusk photography is quickly becoming the cornerstone of a successful campaign, presenting the property with a combination of natural and artificial light and setting the scene for a welcoming home.
Professional floor plansStudies show that the majority of buyers prefer properties that show professional-quality floor plans. Floor plans allow prospective buyers to imagine living in the property, and help buyers short list a property both pre and post inspection.
For sale photo boardFrom the street, many homes seem similar, but professional photography on the ‘for sale’ board gives buyers x-ray vision and showcases the best attributes of the home, inviting further inspection. The board also identifies the property quickly to prospective purchasers.
InternetBuyers that can specify a suburb, beds, baths, and price will search for a property online. Professional dusk photography and using effective placement upgrades ensures a property stands out amongst the crowd.
BrochuresProfessionally printed colour brochures allows buyers retain listing information, imagine themselves in the home. show family and friends and increases the probability of a second inspection.
NewspaperPrint media captures emotional buyers – those that browse the newspaper to make sure nothing was missed online. Print media exposes the buyer to a property that perhaps was outside their logical criteria. Emotional buyers tend to make top offers, and so it’s imperative to ensure the property is showcased to those prospective buyers.
