J. Michael Lunsford PTA May/June Newsletter
Dear J. Michael Lunsford Community,
This is the final PTA Newsletter of the year. It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve as the President this
year. I thank all of the PTA members who have contributed to making this a successful and enriching first year
of our new middle school. I especially want to thank Mr. Slevin and the 2011-2012 PTA officers - Lesli
McGrath, Edna Naim, Katharina Reed, Kaye Findley, Sri Srinivasan, and Lisa Strother.
This year, with your help, the PTA was able to accomplish a great deal. Some of the things we did include:
paid for a guest speaker at an assembly on anti-bullying
offered financial grants to teachers for supplemental classroom materials
helped to pay for incentives for the school PBIS program
supported after school clubs
provided student agendas
held a staff welcome breakfast as well as staff lunch at the annual retreat over the summer
provided supplemental equipment to the JML clinic
hosted Holidays Around the World – a highly attended international-themed event
provided funds to support Odyssey of the Mind teams
purchased new high tech classroom equipment through a matching grant with the Promethean company
paid for the transportation for the 6th grade College in Six program
supplemented the 8th grade Career Explorations program
paid for transition materials and incentives for rising 6th
and 8th
graders
supplemented the 8th grade end of year celebration
celebrated our staff during Teacher Appreciation Week
supplemented various classroom curriculum
held Lunsford’s Big Night Out fine arts night
purchased additional furniture for the library
held a Spring Clean-Up Day at Lunsford
purchased benches for outdoor campus beautification
facilitated volunteers throughout the school
I invite you to attend the last PTA meeting of this school year on May 15th
at 7:00 p.m. in the school library.
At this meeting we will be voting on several other opportunities to aid J. Michael Lunsford using funds from
this year’s budget.
I thank you for all you have contributed to the school this year. I also want to thank the community businesses
who partnered with the PTA. The goals of the PTA can only be accomplished by working together as a
community, and this past year the community delivered.
Sincerely,
Tricia Haneghan

LCPS BUDGET UPDATE
The Board of Supervisors sent the Item regarding the supplemental appropriation request for additional State funding from the Loudoun
County Public Schools to the Finance/Government Services and Operations Committee (FGSOC) for further discussion on May
14th. Following the discussion at FGSOC this item will be forwarded to the Board Business meeting on May 15th. WHAT DOES THIS
MEAN? There are $7.9 million in non-compete State educational funds that the LCPS School Board has requested from the Board of
Supervisors to be appropriated to the school district. Further school budget cuts will be necessary if the Board of Supervisors does not
appropriate this funding. WHAT CAN I DO? You can email [email protected] (At Large Supervisor) and [email protected] (Dulles Supervisor) to request that they support appropriating the State educational funds to the school
district.
