LIVE IN AN OLD CREAMERY
or in A Modern Cave
September is offi cially the fi rst fall month – but it doesn't feel like it. Th e days are still warm and the water is perfect for a swim even in this latitude. Th ere are still plenty of fl owers, berries and fruit in the yard and both the greengrocer and our gardens have an abundance of lovely, fresh vegetables.
Although it still feels like summer, the season is drawing to a close. To those of us living in a country with changing seasons, it feels a bit melancholy in a way. We know that before long, the days will turn colder and darker and the garden will wither.
Th e theme in this issue is apartments. Th rough the years, we've had many inquiries from people who love the style but don't feel like they can use it to decorate their apartments.
Th at's why we wanted to use this issue to show you that it's defi nitely possible. And even if you don't live in an apartment, you can still fi nd inspiration from the pictures.
If you live in an apartment with no yard and you want to extend summer for a little while, you can fi nd bunches of cut fl owers at your local fl orist or market. Th ey're still aff ordable and lend a nice feel of summer throughout your home.
if you have questions, comments or ideas, please write our editorial staff or fi nd us on our blog - www.jdlblog.dk - or on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/jeannedarcliving

Cheerful heather 44
Here in Denmark, we're lucky enough to have huge areas of wild heather. Blankets of rosy heather grace heaths and woods – nature's own ground cover that's both practical and pretty.
Th e aromatic heather is also popular with the bees that give the loveliest and sweetest heather honey in return. Heather is also very suitable for the garden and looks wonderful is beds and pots alike. In fact, it's possible to have fl owering heather almost year-round by choosing diff erent varieties. Heather also comes in white as well as diff erent shades of pink and purple.
Garden heather will thrive best in acidic soil that should be fairly well-drained, depending on the type of plant you choose. Otherwise, heather prefers sunny and warm spots. Cut back withered and dry infl orescences in the spring so the plant stays dense and tuft-like, but don't cut it all the way down to the hard wood. Th is will kill the plant as it is unable to put out new shoots from there.
We made a trip to the village of Helberskov, where Lonnie and her family own a wonderful summerhouse. It's located in the middle of the woods yet close to the water. Heather abounds here. It really thrives in the light forest fl oor. You can cut heather for decorations and for drying here without even being able to tell that you were there.
Heather is amazing for dried wreaths because its pretty pink color is preserved when dried. Th e nice colors and the fl owers' slightly wild appearance also go really well with the other blooming summer fl owers of the season. Th e deep, calm color and blooms of the hydrangea, for instance, create a beautiful contrast with heather. If you dare to go for a slightly bolder look, like we have here, you can combine the pink heather with blue cornfl owers and add in dry infl orescences and crisp, green leaves.
