he brotherhood o the Hermitage o theHoly Cross greet you all as we prepare

ourselves to enter into the season o GreatLent. We pray that the Lord grant you a ruitulspiritual struggle through this upcoming timeo repentance and inner cleansing. Troughour prayers, asting, and ascetical struggle, weseek to scrub our souls clean o the dark grimeo sin that we have let accumulate through our

orgetulness o God so that our true nature -the holy image o God within us - may againshine with all the brilliance o the golden iconsthat adorn the inside o our churches.

Our spiritual striving while we are in thislie has consequences in Eternity. As St. Isaacthe Syrian has said: “Our lie is given to us orrepentance. Do not waste it in vain pursuits.”Our time in this lie is a gi rom God, and wemust use it wisely in order to draw closer toHim, or time is the only thing that we can notregain once it is lost.

During Lent, it is also very important or usto remember those who have already passedon and now await the General Resurrectionand Last Judgement. Once we repose, we canno longer oer repentance to the Lord, and we must rely o the prayers o the Church ando our loved ones to lead us along towardsParadise. Te Lord, who is infnite in mercy, hears our prayers and is quick to respond toour loving and heartelt petitions, and theChurch over the ages witnesses to the e-ectiveness o our prayers or those departed who fnd mercy in comort in them.

For this reason, the Lenten period is a timenot only o personal prayer and repentance, but a season in which we oer our prayers on behal o the departed. Beginning March 9, thefrst “Saturday o the Dead” or 2013, specialprayers or the dead are added to the Saturday liturgical services. In monasteries, the nameso the reposed are read during the special Mat-ins service on Lenten Saturdays and UniversalPannykhidas (memorial services or the re-posed “o all ages”) are served ollowing theDivine Liturgy on these our Saturdays. We

now invite you to submit or prayerul com-

memoration the names o reposed Orthodox Christians. For the duration o the Great Fast, all o these names will be prayerully read at ev-ery Matins service or the departed, at every Uni- versal Pannykhida, and at every Divine Liturgy.

Enclosed you will fnd a commemorationslip and a return envelope. Please write thenames o reposed Orthodox Christians* andsend the slip back to us, together with what-ever oering o alms you are able to make on behal o your loved ones. Te Holy Church bears witness that both prayer and almsgivingare benefcial on behal o the departed, who

can no longer pray or perorm works o v irtueor themselves. Let us all pray this Lent thatour merciul and compassionate Lord grantrest to the souls o His departed servants, andto lead them to a place o green pasture and the waters o rest, where there is neither sickness, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but lie everlasting.

+ George, Bishop o Mayeld

he Brotherhood o Holy Cross Monastery is growing tremendously and, with the blessing o His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion, we

are building more living quarters or monks. Project Kellia is a monasticdormitory consisting o 9 cells, an infrmary cell, and a medicaldispensary. We expect that the cells will be flled immediately by novicescurrently living in temporary housing and monastic candidates arrivingin 2013.

Tanks to your generous support, Project Kellia construction is con-tinuing steadily, but we still have a long way to go beore completion.Over $216,000 has been raised so ar and we are currently in the processo roofng the building. However, there is still much work yet to do. A-ter the building is rooed in, then we can start working on the electric work, plumbing, drywall, painting, trim work, and all o the other smalldetails that go into constructing a residential building.

Tough construction is currently in ull swing, we are araid that con-struction will stop due to lack o unding, and we are concerned aboutnot being able to continue this building which is so greatly needed.

Please donate generously to make it possible or more men to serGod in the monastic lie at the Hermitage o the Holy Cross.

You may make your donation by sending a check with “Project Kelin the memo line to:
