What is a Computer ?
A computer is a device that takes an input, processes the input data and then output the result. So
accordingly, it is made of input devices, a processing unit and output devices.

What is Hardware ?
To be simple : !! Anything that you can touch in a computer !!H/W is printer, cables, monitor, CPU, Keyboard,
mouse, CD, USB drives.

What is Software ?Something Virtual – like the songs stored in the CD.
Computer instructions or data. Anything that can be stored electronically is software.
Operating SystemAn operating system, or "OS," is software that communicates with the hardware and allows other programs to run. It is comprised of system software, or the fundamental files your computer needs to boot up and function. Every desktop computer, tablet, and smartphone includes an operating system that provides basic functionality for the device. – To be simple – it is like the basic engine of the car.
Programs / ApplicationsAn organized list of instructions that, when executed, causes the computer to behave in a predetermined manner. Without programs, computers are useless.

Specs of a Computer - Memory
Memory / RAM – This is a fast internal memory which is used to store information temporarily when the computer runs; Generally more memory is good and makes the computer run faster.
Specs of a Computer – CPU
CPU Speed – The speed of the central processing unit; it is generally measured in Mega Herz. The higher the Mega Herz and more latest generation the processor is the faster will be your PC.
Specs of a Computer – Hard Disk
Hard Drive – This is storage area; Generally nowadays they come as 600Gb, 750Gb and 1TB(Terabyte) etc. To estimate how much space you need think of what are you going to store – pictures, videos, songs or documents. In 1GB you can approximately store 300 good quality pictures or a video of 45 minutes or 200 songs or a 1000 docs.

Boot your PC
Booting your PC is turning it on. Simply press the power button and your PC will go through the boot sequence and load the OS. After which you will see a logon screen.
Logging onOnce you see the logon screen click on the username and enter your password and the OS will now load the desktop where you can start using different programs.

Lets personalize the DesktopClick on the start button on the left corner, then click on all programs -> Accessories -> System Tools and then find Control Panel. Once you click on it you will get the below window, from where you can customize your computer settings.
Change Color /Theme
Lets personalize the DesktopYou can change the color of your background. Change the Screen Saver screen or you can choose an existing theme.

Start a Program
• Click on the start button on the left corner
Start Button Type “Word” in
this box
Start Microsoft Word
You will see a program name “Microsoft Word 2010” under programs. Double clicking on the program icon will start the program.

Working with MS WordOnce MS word program starts it will open a blank document like below. We can start typing in the white space.
Getting Familiar with the Windows Control
Minimize the window
Clicking on the dash minimize the window and clicking on the square will maximize the window. Maximize the
window Close the window
When the window is minimized, click on the word icon on the taskbar to maximize it.
Getting Familiar with the Word Menu Bar
To Save the file click on the floppy icon
Each icon on the menu bar has a function associated with it.

When the save button is pressed, you get a window where you specify a filename
Filenames
Filenames has two parts – <primary name> <dot> <Extension> Example - training.doc
Primary name can be any name you want to give. The extension decides the type of the file and is associated with the program. If you specify a different extension you will not be able to open the file back until you associate it again with the program.
Word docs will have extension of docx.Excel docs will have extension of xlsx.

Aligning text in a document
This is a left aligned text. In order to make the text left aligned, first high light the text with your mouse and then click on the icon that is left aligned.
This is a right aligned text. In order to make the text right aligned, first high
light the text with your mouse and then click on the icon that is right
aligned.
This is a center aligned text. In order to make the text center aligned, first high light the text with your mouse
and then click on the icon that is center aligned.
This is a justified text. In order to make the text justified, first high light the text with your mouse and then click on the icon that is justified.
Printing your word documentTo print the document click on File menu and you will get the below screen; once you are satisfied with the layout how it looks, clicking on the print button will send it to the printer. Your printer obviously has to be preconfigured for this.
Let’s Practice You need to logon to the computer, start the Microsoft word Program and then type the document (as formatted) and print it.

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks. Different computer behave as the server (think of the waitress in a restaurant) and you are the client. You request an item and the server provides you that item and luckily till now most of it is free.
